Yea I think it could be Gibeon, but that does not mean it is not an
Oregon meteorite. It just means it resembles a Gibeon. Wouldn't take
long to etch a small spot and see if it is a fine octahedrite pattern
or not.

I go with Ruben...I have a Gibeon that looks almost identical to this.

Hi all,
I gotta agree with Mike, that's no Canyon Diablo. I
think it looks more like Henbury or Gibeon. I'd never
seen Gibeon with caliche till this year when I (once
again) bought a few Gibeon individuals. I was
surprised to find one with "spotty" caliche just like
the oregon piece.

Hi Martin I agree that the shape is perfect to be a Canyon Diablo. But
the caliche is way to spotty. When a CD is dug out is either covered
in white caliche or scaly rust. There are some that have been sticking
out of the ground that show that nice patina but I don't think they
have the caliche. I
Martin,
For an extra thousand dollars, rocks in Arizona could
crawl to Oregon! Maybe this is the beginning of a
migration!

Its interesting to note that weathered meteorites are usually less valuable
than fresher
specimens, but when you get REALLY old the value comes back in.

Hello Gary and list,
"I am struck by the porocity of the specimen." What you are seeing most is
spaces in cracks due to weathering.
"And those 'cubic' inclusions." The "inclusions" are more and less
weathered portions (depending on how you want to see it) of the meteorite.

I am struck by the porocity of the specimen. And those 'cubic' inclusions.

Hello list,
Bernd recently noted, "I can highly recommend Steve's thin sections."
I agree. I purchased a Brownfield Thin Section from Steve on ebay last
year. It is the best looking thin section I have ever seen that was made by
handrather then made by one of those $50,000 machine as most
That's really sad news and ... unfortunately again. Of course, I would also
like to join Geoff and other List members in wishing Iris and Walter all the
best for a speedy and full recovery !!!
I got mail today from Maria who told me that Walter is still in intensive care.
Oh well, life has its ups
Geoff Notkin,
These are sad news. I only know Iris and her husband from this List.
However, please convey to Iris Lang and her husband our best wishes for a
speedy and full recovery. I would like to see them both, back and active on
the List.

Mike & all,
That did look like a winner, but too bad about the
crumby documentation. The seller didn't seem very
interested in providing anything but platitudes. The
caliche crusts were right for eastern Oregon.
Cheers,
Norm
