Re: [meteorite-list] Turkmenistan falls
Hi Doug, and you forgot to mention, that the Turkmen-people had wished, that the 1ton stone would have hammered that Nyjazov right on the head, as he was an especially idiotic example of the meanwhile rarer species, called megalomaniac dictator. Nyjazov wrote a pseudo-religious book, an incredible rubbish. That book he made to the main subject in all schools and no university diploma without the examinee being able to recite the content word by word. He let build monuments for this book, in TV-shows the people danced arounf that book (and he wasn't pleased, that most national libraries all around the world, refused to accept the copies he presented them). In the capital he let errect a golden statue of himself, motor-operated to turn around for the sun always shining in his face. He officially redefined the names of the months, one is named now after his mother. Frequently he arranged song contests, with the requirement that all lyrics had to praise his splendour, glory and wisdom. Those were after a while even for him so boring, that he didn't attend the spectacles anymore. In the capital he started a project, that on each intersection underpasses were built, and by law the pedestrian had to use them, although there are almost no private cars in town, only for not disturbing him, when he is going by car. He bleed his people dry, destroyed the medicare, which is now worse than in Africa, he cited the people to hard labours, arbitrary imprisonments torture were the orders of each day. Thanks God he wasn't so militaristic like e.g. Kim Jong-il, but in the row of dictators a Lukashenko is a choir boy in comparision. That man was mentally insane. I've some hundred grams of his Sapamurat Turkmenbashi H5 left. Small rusty fragments. But I will store them a few years, as they are still suffering from the Russian disease and underrated. Yep it has 1ton tkw, but 1ton of that 1ton is a single stone. No supply anymore. Happy those, who bought in time! Buckleboo! Check out this little gem that coincidentally came into my inbox (embellished only slightly): On June 20, 1998, the eve of the anniversary of the democratic authoritarian head of state of Turkmenistan was to celebrate the anniversary of his rise to power on June 21 (Summer Solstice). By decree, a meteorite fell on his country on that day to herald in the celebration - weighing well over a metric ton! A diehard meteorite devotee, the kingly leader thought, ... This one has my name all over it. He then decreed that the meteorite would be named His Excellency, World Leader of Turkmens and President Saparmurat Atayevich Niyazov, after himself. We better know this meteorite as KUNYA-URGENCH (H5), as the Nomenclature Committee did not respect his wishes with official status. It was then decreed in some circles underground, that members of said committee would have their tongues cut out if they ever set foot in Turkmenistan looking for meteorites. The King emphasized this point by commanding a repeat occurrence for collectors. Sure enough, on September 5, 1998, two and a half months later, another H5 fell which was named DASHOGUZ, just 50 kilometers away from the original. The British Museum then was rumored to diplomatically motion for the tongues of its colleagues by making Turkmenbashy (=Great Leader of the Turkmens) a synonym in the style of Alexander the Great, using his first name: also known as: Saparmurat Turkmenbashy (Saparmurat the Great Leader of the Turkmens). And that official synonym, given the nod by Turkmen scientists for the original Turkmenbashy fall, continues today. His Excellency, Great Leader of Turkmens and President Saparmurat Atayevich Niyazov unfortunately joined the stars from whence he came officially around the Winter Solstice (December 21, 2006). It is an interesting footnote that those are the only two witnessed falls ever recorded for Turkmenistan :-) The new President of Turkmenistan is: Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç Berdimuhammedow soon maybe to add Turkmenbashy. The grapevine has it he may also command a meteorite fall in his name to consolidate rule in this challenging resource rich country - and his is rumored to be the son of Turkmenbashy. http://www.thewest.com.au/default.aspx?MenuID=145ContentID=24657 Flaming space junk narrowly misses jet 28th March 2007, 11:15 WST Pieces of space junk from a Russian satellite coming out of orbit narrowly missed hitting a jetliner over the Pacific Ocean overnight. The pilot of a Lan Chile Airbus A340, which was travelling between Santiago, Chile, and Auckland, New Zealand, notified air traffic controllers at Auckland Oceanic Centre after seeing flaming space junk hurtling across the sky just five nautical miles in front of and behind his plane about 10pm last night. According to a plane spotter, who was tuning into a high frequency radio broadcast at the time, the pilot reported that the rumbling noise from the space debris could be heard over the noise of the aircraft. He described he saw a piece of debris lighting up as it re-entered (the earth's atmosphere). He was one very worried pilot, as you would imagine. Auckland is talking to (an) Aerolineas Argentinas (pilot) who is travelling (in the) opposite direction at 10 degrees further south asking if they wish to turn back to Auckland. They have elected to carry on at the moment. (It's) not something you come across everyday and I am sure the Lan Chile crew will have a tale to tell. A spokesman for Airways New Zealand, which provides air navigation services across airspace known as the Auckland Flight Information Region, confirmed the incident this morning. He said it occurred about 10 minutes after the Lan Chile flight had entered the Auckland Flight Information Region. Airways New Zealand had been warned by Russian authorities almost two weeks ago that a satellite would be entering the earth's atmosphere sometime today between 10.30am and midday NZ time (6.30-8am WA time). Airways New Zealand then provided that information to airlines and pilots that would be travelling in that region at that time. They could then decide for themselves whether they wished to fly during that period. But clearly there has been a timing issue, the spokesman said. Either the time that was indicated to us was incorrect or the satellite de-orbited early. Because the timing was wrong, the coordinates of where the satellite was supposed to enter the Earth's atmosphere also turned out to be incorrect. A formal report about the incident has been logged and recordings of conversations between the pilot and air traffic controllers were expected to be handed over to investigators in the next few days, he said. The Lan Chile flight landed safely at Auckland Airport early this morning, he said. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

For [the pilot] to have heard it, one of two things - [the debris] was a lot closer than he thinks or it was bigger and going at quite a high speed. You can see the same thing in tumblers in the rock trade. One can use sand (Si02) which is a hardness of 7 on the Mo's scale down through cork, which is under a hardness of 2. Some even use lead beads. For meteorites, a decent choice is tiny glass beads with a hardness softer than the fusion crust (man made glass is approximately a 5). However, even with glass beads, care must be taken to keep from blasting off parts of the fusion crust, since the force of the unit can do that - much like a tornado can rip off the roofs of buildings. In addition, even with softer material, the peeks of fusion crust can be rounded off - highly undesirable in my opinion. So, how far one holds the tip of the sand blaster from the stone, the amount of pressure used in the unit, How long the material is exposed to the treatment, etc, all play into being able to remove rust and/or dirt without harming the fusion crust. A skilled hand and fine eye can, with experience, remove rust from most meteorites without damaging the fusion crust - depending on many factors. So, to say blasting does or does not alter the fusion crust is naïve. Some times it does not - many times it does. Going very slowly and checking closely to exactly what is being removed and or altered is a requirement of the person using the blaster. Use of a microscope greatly aids in this, but increases the time by many factors - and I believe most dealers do NOT have a clear understanding of the intricacies of the process and/or take sufficient care in their work to insure fusion crust is left unaltered. The Campo coins you and Jim offer just took 6 days to get here!! By the way it looks just fabulous and thanks for that one. I recommend everyone who has a Campo(collection) to get one. The great part is you can choose a favorite number and we got number 117 to put it on display together with our 117 kg. piece. Maybe a nice tip to get the number compared to the grams or kilos you have. Thanks again guys, Jan Bartels Holland www.heavenlybodies.nl Herman, thanks, I had forgotten about that! I know that Germany right now, is a difficult place to ship things to. I have had several items held up in customs for more than 6 weeks since Jan 1st. It is odd how things get lost, then show up much later. I wonder where they sit for all those months. I just wish my 172 kilogram Muonionalusta would end it's 6 month hiatus and show up at my doorstep. Anyone who uses UPS supply chain solutions in Munich, well, don't say I didn't warn you. Funny part is that since we are close neighbours to Germany we (I) never had any troubles in receiving mail from the U.S. It just takes about a week or so to arive. It´s not the geographical neighbourhood from Germany to the Netherlands here in ´ol Europe, where everything seems to be so closely together from a U.S. perspective from the other side of the pond, Jan, in fact it´s just our very own customs and bureaucracy! Though there seems to be no general rule to it. I had recent global priority mail coming in here right on time, but then again every now and then I experience week-long delays, while you are waiting and waiting and waiting... and never ever hear a word from your customs, where the specimen of your desire have most likely been set on temporary arrest. [meteorite-list] Walter Branch
Hello Everyone, We had an exciting day today. Walter moved to the Rehabilitation Center. He no longer has a feeding tube or picc line. He will begin therapy in the morning around 9:00 a.m. and finish around 4:00 p.m. I suspect my visit tomorrow will be short:) depending on how grouchy he is! One of the rehab workers told me the average length of stay is about 2 weeks. So hopefully Walter will be home soon. I appreciate all of the support financially and emotionally. I have saved all of the emails so that Walter can read them when he gets home. Thanks for all of your encouragement and support! Dear Eric, How wonderful that you did that! Yeah, Walter has only now met just two of us but wait until he gets to Tucson next year... I hope we don't scare him off. Help and support comes very early on but then tapers off. Now is the time when Walter needs all the strength and support we can give. I know you've all been thinking about him and waiting for the updates just like I have. Maria - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Tuesday, March 27, 2007 9:01 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Walter Branch Greetings all I drove down to Savannah today and spent a couple hours with Walter. I was the second meteorite person he has ever met, John Sinclair was the other. So he was blown away with the signed poster and accompanying check from a group of casual email acquaintances whom he has never met. Way to go guys. As expected we talked meteorites, and hunting meteorites, and meteorite people, and meteorite news etc, etc. We might even get him out to the Tucson show one of these years. His daughter is doing fine, out playing with her friends. The young heal fast. I asked how his wife was doing and he said she has been incredible. All the financial stuff and other things that Walter used to deal with she has taken care of completely. She is there every day and Walter considers himself luck to have her. Unfortunately she was not there during my visit so I did not get to meet her. As far as Walter himself goes he is getting better. He doesn't have much of an appetite and it was obvious after a couple hours that he was getting tired. While I was there the head of the rehab center dropped by and said that as soon as the surgeons cleared him he was headed over to rehab. That is expected sometime this week. After that the rehab people will torture him until he can get in and out of bed and walk. A compound fracture of his upper right leg makes that difficult now. Once rehab is done it will be home to his own bed and family for further healing. That isn't the end though because there will be further surgery required in the coming months. All in all he looked really good for someone who nearly died at the scene of the accident. -- Eric Olson 7682 Firethorn Dr Fayetteville, NC 28311 http://www.star-bits.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I love that we are getting on this subject. How fun. It's typically a guy thing but lots of girls love this stuff too. I'm not into the posting of stuff, and trying to sell stuff, I'm a hunter, and I'm a collector. I just want knowledge, and you guys give me that. I can't thank you guys and girls enough for your insight and knowlege. Besides that it's incredibly amusing. Take care all. [meteorite-list] OT - Insulting my service at the president's pleasure
American presidents are expendable - what do you think elections do? Longer terms possible in congress are preferable for the purpose of long-term law-mongering, the work of professional politicians - lobbying does the talking, and legislation is the architecture of social order and political identity. Democratic political economy itself can have no central political apex without contradicting democratic ideals. Social contracts are mutual. It is common for naive nationalists to uncritically and nostalgically conflate George W. Bush's inspirationally divisive, ship-sinks-with-its-captain ignorance with its historical precedent: the patently non-American authoritative model of a (monarchistic) prestigious demagogue linked intrinsically to historically-generative/generated ideological superstructure of legitimation. Bush is then a surrogate for the indignation of anti-egalitarian militants, the reactive analogue of Islamist terror leaders. Let an American non-democrat remind you: Bush is not the State. Nor is any president. The State has discredited Bush because he has discredited the State. My president: possessive case, or possessed by one's case? All preponderant politicians are disingenuous at worst and megalomaniacal at best, and necessarily demonstrate messianic tendencies. Otherwise, the political agent's unequivocal nucleic authoritative stability would in effect be precluded by self-reflexive-ambivalent discourse, testing the faith of the constituency and promoting popular alteration to state paradigms. In Bush's defense, he is known to necessarily poke fun at his own shortcomings, but his performance of the character of 'president' is hopelessly unsupported by his political-economic experience. The extent of his reflexivity is self-preserving in strategic purpose, not Machiavellian leave that to Cheney. America is negatively represented by the figure of the person Bush - an ersatz rancher and corporate refugee. History will do the insulting that any one critic can only idly iterate. -Thaddeus Besedin McCartney Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I take offense at you calling my president a plain stupid idiot. Re: [meteorite-list] Walter Zeitschel
Hello list members, Walter Zeitschel is also in recovery and maybe some of you don't know him or about his work. You really need to check out the report Michael Hofman put together about his visit and written papers by Walter. http://service.gmx.net/mc/4r4WTMkrdg5Yp1OCBg7Jav1W8j7H9y after you open up the site, click on GMX MediaCenter starten Many articles are written in English. You can view this only until 13.4.2007, which would be April 13, 2007. If you get to a German text, keep strolling further and you will see another one in English! Very interesting work on craters and spheroids and meteorites of course. Michael Hofman, a German meteorite collector and hunter, had a very impressive visit with Walter before he had to go to the hospital. I remember him writing to me the next day after the visit and he was still so excited about the time he spend with Niki and Walter. An absolut highlight in his otherwise average meteorite collecting experience. Be sure to check out the last picture at the very end! Could it be a a small meteorite? A very speedy recovery to you Walter and maybe you can send some good news along with Michael to read for us list-members about your recovery. Re: [meteorite-list] Tennessee fall picture on postcard on ebay.
Hello Sterling, Robert, All, Sterling's right, but to clarify a little; it's a fairly common postcard showing the excavation of the second largest Brenham mass (formerly the largest...). I've seen countless cards like this around...it's one of the two common Brenham cards, and there's most likely at least one more on ebay listed right now with the correct location of the find in the description.
