[meteorite-list] CRATER FROM POSSIBLE METEOR FRAGMENT IN BALI .....
Another article: http://www.thejakartapost.com/detailheadlines.asp?fileid=20080103.A05irec=4 Meteor fragment crater draws crowds to Gianyar National News - Thursday, January 03, 2008 Ary Hermawan and Yuli Tri Suwarni, The Jakarta Post, Gianyar, Bandung Residents in Sukawati village in Gianyar regency, around 20 kilometers north of Denpasar, reported the appearance of a mysterious crater in the middle of a paddy field Wednesday. The hole was allegedly caused by a falling meteorite fragment. One meter wide and around 30 centimeters deep, the cavity has turned into a large puddle in the heavy rains that have showered the area since New Year's Eve. Disregarding slippery paths leading to the site, hundreds of people came to see the crater with their own eyes, and take photographs of it with cameras and mobile phones. Residents heard an extremely loud gun-like explosion Tuesday evening around 1 a.m. At the same time, a number of residents saw a bright object falling from the sky, Made Tekek Arimbawa, a neighborhood leader, told reporters. The hole first noticed Tuesday morning by I Wayan Miasa, 60, the owner of the field. Made said he ordered the owner to wait for an explanation from the authorities before using the field again. We don't know for sure what it is, he said. Sukawati police chief Comr. Ida Bagus Bedanajati said pieces of rock were found in the alleged meteorite crater. The rocks we found resembled pumice but didn't float -- it sank in water, he said. He said the impact had not altered the structure of the soil or killed any plants or animals in the surrounding area. There were no casualties or material losses. What we do next is wait for the experts, he said. The police had secured the area with a police line. Bali is home to many mystic beliefs where odd and supernatural occurrences like flying fire balls are not unheard of. The Balinese describe the occurrences as niskala which refers to the world of unseen phenomena. Bandung Flight and Space Institute sun and space researcher Thomas Djamaludin said Wednesday he believed the unidentified object was a meteoric fragment. He said he suspected a larger fragment had created the hole as it was impossible for small fragments to create the loud noise heard by residents. The fragment would not cause radiation effects dangerous to humans, Djamaludin said. Fragments were only dangerous at the time of their explosive impact, with a fallout of hot debris ... After that they are harmless, he said in Bandung. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] ARTIC IRONS: THE HUNT IS ON
Hi all - I know I'm screaming with the caps, but this just came in from Dr. Firestone: Mr. Grondine: Consider the doctorate honorary.[In an earlier message, I told Dr. Firestone that he was mistaken in calling me Dr. Grondine.] We had to go through thousands of mammoth tusks at the Canada Fossils warehouse to find 7 with meteoritic impacts. Canada Fossils gathers tusks from various suppliers but they suggested that these fossils likely came from near the Yukon River. We also have a bison skull containing micrometeorites that comes from Siberia. The exact locations are unknown. A candidate crater of about the right age (34 kyr BP) is Sithylemenkat Lake Crater in Alaska. Presumably the Fe-Ni meteor exploded over the mammoths and a large piece continued on forming the crater. My poster from the AGU Meeting is on-line at http://ie.lbl.gov/mammoth/impact.html. Regards, Rick Firestone Sorry guys, but it looks like there won't be a Haag Crater, or Farmer Crater - at least not this time, for this one. My assumption right now is that this crater has been identified by someone with the Impact Field Studies Group, but we'll see. It's also strange, but it appears an intensely skilled physicist like Dr. Firestone still does not have a really firm grasp of the parent bodies and the mechanics of hypervelocity impact - if he had only met Dr. Holsapple or Dr. Melosh, all of this would be proceeding even quicker than it is. More NSF and NASA money would have been a help as well. good hunting all, E.P. Grondine Man and Impact in the Americas Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! [meteorite-list] Cyclotron
Can a nuclear weapon shake neutrons loose? In creating quarks in cyclotrons, don't they break down particles to the subatomic level? Can't one imagine a natural force [in the strict sense of the word] powerful enough to administer this kind of force? A projectile immense enough to devastate a hemisphere of a planet would seem quite capable of pushing the needle into the red zone? [meteorite-list] Bright Object Seen Streaking Across California Sky
http://www.redding.com/news/2008/jan/03/ufo-sighting-firemen-go/ UFO sighting? Firemen go toward the light By Kimberly Ross Redding Record Searchlight January 3, 2008 A Christmas Eve flash in the sky over northeastern Shasta County has some speculating about reindeer on fire or season's greetings from little green men. But the celestial light show was probably just a meteorite, said Fall River Mills firefighter Quincy Hatch. Hatch and other firefighters were driving east on Highway 299, east of McArthur, to check on smoke from three burn piles reportedly on the Big Valley summit. On their way, Chief Chuck Bethel and others spotted a bright light and an object streaking across the sky about 7:40 p.m., Hatch said. At first, we thought it might be an airplane that went down, he said. Hatch, also an amateur astronomer, saw the huge flash that lasted three to five seconds, but said he didn't look in time to spot a streaking object in the sky, gone in just a second or two. We had one of the locals up on the ridge drive up in his pickup and ask us if we were searching for the aliens yet, Hatch said with a chuckle. They weren't the only ones who saw the light. As his Burney office co-workers ribbed him with alien greetings of Nanu-nanu and Twilight Zone theme music, Shasta County Sheriff's deputy Jesse Gunsauls grudgingly admitted that he'd seen a large, greenish light coming toward the ground. It surprised him as he drove on Highway 299, on the east side of Hatchet Mountain, but it wasn't like it was flying around or anything, Gunsauls said. It didn't look like a shooting star, he said, and clarified: Do I think it was aliens -- no. Sgt. Anthony Bertain had been driving behind Gunsauls and saw the flash, too. Gunsauls said he guesses it was a meteor, and NASA spokeswoman Dolores Beasley said that conclusion makes sense. Still, that didn't stop Gunsauls' colleagues from teasing that he must have witnessed Rudolph's nose malfunctioning. Gunsauls said he had heard the possible meteorite sparked a spot fire, but Lassen County forestry and fire officials said they had no record of that. Two California Highway Patrol officers and some other residents also reported seeing the flash, Hatch said. The Record Searchlight received an anonymous call that some celestial debris had fallen near the Hat Creek Observatory, where scientists are monitoring for signals of extraterrestrial life. But onsite astronomer Rick Forster said the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program there searches for radio waves from deep space, not visual images close to Earth. Those wouldn't be picked up by its equipment. Nevertheless, Forster gets similar reports of objects that are more likely airplanes, planets or twinkling stars, not aliens, he said. It's neat to imagine that that happened and that they're here already, but we take a little more objective stance to the existence of extraterrestrials, he said. Forster's not jaded to those callers, though. I keep hoping that I will witness firsthand what people are reporting, because they sound fascinating. __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Cyclotron
Jerry, List, Nuclear weapons release copious neutrons because of a unique property of uranium and plutonium nuclei: when they encorporate a stray neutron, they split easily into two big fragments and several more stray neutrons. And that is the key: several more neutrons, more than one, 2.2 to 2.7 neutrons, are released! Those multiple neutrons in turn repeat the event with nearby uranium and plutonium nuclei, who in turn... Well, you can see where this is going! The famous chain reaction! Other nuclei do not do both these things, only 235U and 239Pu. When the chain reaction completes, the last remaining (and theoretically largest) population of U or Pu atoms fission, releasing up to 3 neutrons each, BUT there are no more U or Pu nuclei left to fission! So, there is a Neutron Flash!! Trillions of neutrons, all dressed up and nowhere to go! A bomb designed to maximize the Neutron Flash (or use other gimmicks to enhance neutron flux) and minimize explosive forces is called a Neutron Bomb, which would have the result of killing lots of folks but leaving their more durable goods intact (if a trifle radioactive). An equally great amount of work has been done to reduce neutrons, too, to thoroughly trash the enemy's iPods and cellphones, and destroy their Wii's, without wiping more folks than necessary. But a nuclear bomb doesn't shake neutrons loose. It produces them. In general, you can't get a neutron by whacking something. But of course, a Chicxulub level event tends to write its own rules. The ultimate kinetic energy weapon -- a little slug traveling at a good fraction of the speed of light -- would likely produce a lot of things stranger than neutrons, like pions and assorted imported mesons, so I don't ever say never...
