Re: [meteorite-list] TKW help -- Kem Kem??

2008-01-26 Thread Jeff Kuyken
G'day Dean,

Yeah that rings a bell. I remember Kem Kem stuff all over ebay back in 2001.
I think the whole NWA numbering system was just being done sometime around
then too. I think most of the Kem Kem material was just another name for
Unclassified NWA. ;-)

Cheers,

Jeff

In 2000 (Might be 1999 or 2001, I cant remember
exactly) this was in BNWA (Before NWA) ex meteorite
dealer Michael Casper bought 300 kilos of meteorites
(300 kilos was a massive amount of meteorites at a
time when even weathered unclassified meteorites were
getting $3 a gram on ebay) that he was told was found
in the Kem Kem plain near the algerian border. I
bought some from this 300 kilo bunch (As did a lot of
other dealers and meteorites named "Kem Kem" was
showing up on ebay).
After seeing it in person I realized that this was a
very large number of strewnfields all mixed together
that Casper was selling. At around the same time the
meteoritical society was trying to decide how to
retain as much information as possible on all the
meteorites that were just being sold with no
particular pattern in morocco. Jeff Grossman in
particular went on a "fact finding" mission asking
dealers selling NWAs (They werent called NWAs back
then) what was happening and the best way to
accumulate as much info as possible on all of these
mixed meteorites (I remember him asking me if the
moroccans were cutting them up before selling them).
It soon became obvious that TKW and GPS coordinates
would not be known and it was decided by the met
society that the best way to deal with the less than
ideal (but nevertheless present) situation was to
create the NWA system that we all now all know and
love.
I dont know of anything other than this 300 kilos was
ever sold as Kem Kem. However, there are a lot of
NWA's that originally were a part of Caspers 300 kilos
of "Kem Kem". Bernd mentions a 14 gram eucrite and my
very own historical meteorite NWA001 originally came
from this 300 kilos of "Kem Kem". There are lots more
for sure as this "Kem Kem" was a very mixed group of
meteorites and at that time we all were under the
misguided notion that all meteorites from NWA would
eventually be classified (Wither they actually all
came from the Kem Kem plain or not is another matter
and will probably never be known).
Thats my Kem Kem memories anyway
Cheers

Re: [meteorite-list] Ad 3rd edition A to Z

2008-01-26 Thread Mike Jensen
Hi all
Well Bill and I finally finished the third edition of A to Z. It now
has just over 10,000 meteorites listed in the two sections! We kept it
much the same as the last edition but we did manage to add some new
goodies as well. Some of these include;
1) Solid star for falls only...we eliminated the confusing hollow star.
2) Added a solid star to denote falls in the geographic index.
3) Better notation for chemical vs structural classification of irons.
4) Total number of finds & falls listed for each geographic locality.
I'm sure there are a couple of other that I forgot. But most
importantly we added all new meteorites up to and including MB 92. We
will be in Tucson on Feb. 5-9 so if you plan on being there we can get
you a copy. Just tap one of us on the shoulder...well probably me as
you too short to do it to Bill...and we will get you a copy. If you
can't make it to the show we are selling copies for $24.95 + $3.50
shipping in the USA or $7 shipping to Canada or $12 priority shipping
to other worldwide localities.

Please send PayPal to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or checks and money
orders to the address below.

If you are interested in wholesale copies please let me know.

I'm going to bed now but will answer your emails tomorrow.

Re: [meteorite-list] Watch out for falling metal, guys with sunglasses and dark suits

2008-01-26 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi,

It's not an "old photo reconnaisance satellite"
as Fox and the others reported. It's a new and
experimental vehicle launched a little over a year
ago.

Check the New York Times story I quoted in
my post. The "old" satellite story did not add up,
for the various reasons I gave (and probably others
I didn't think of), and it turns out that it's likely not
an "old photo reconnaisance satellite."

Okay, since it is an AP story, perhaps you'd prefer it from one of the

Re: [meteorite-list] Watch out for falling metal, guys with sunglasses and dark suits

2008-01-26 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi,

Not to quarrel with so impeccable a news source
as The Fox, most of this story does not compute. The
"small bus" size (or 64-65 feet) means a KH-11s or
KH-12, which weigh 13,000 to 18,000 kilograms (or
30,000 to 40,000 pounds), not "about 20,000 pounds."

Much of that weight is propellant, from 11,000 up to
15,000 pounds of it. Such "satellites" are really orbital
spacecraft that maneuver from one orbit to another,
at widely varying altitudes, eccentricities and orbital
("sun-synchronous") orientations. Such a satellite might
weigh "about" 20,000 pounds if its propellant was totally
exhausted.

Also, its re-entry would not be uncertain if it still had
the propellant to inject itself into a proper re-entry orbit
configuration and maneuver once in that orbit. So, either
one failed and can no longer be controlled or cannot
maneuver, or someone kept one up and working, even
though they would have known it meant a disastrous
re-entry. Or one could have been damaged in orbit by
debris. None of these possibilities seem the sort of
thing the NSC would so freely blab about.

If you're not familiar with the KH-11 or KH-12, just
relabel it as the "Hubble Space Telescope," with its 2.3
meter optics. The HST is just a KeyHole with a some
custom factory options. The last of the original KH-11's
was de-orbited in 1996; they had a three year operational
lifetime. The KH-11s or "advanced model" and the KH-12
may have an operational lifetime of up to eight years. And
there's the newer KH-13, but I doubt one of them is coming
down.

In the 1970's, we had two satellites in orbit at a time,
replacing them as they were used up. Then, we had four,
then six. Hard to say how many might still be up there now.
Or, if the weight is accurate, it would have to be an old and
much earlier KeyHole, which were all film return satellites.
However, since the news story mentions the "risk [of the]
exposure of U.S. secrets," requiring protecting our valuable
technology by the complete destruction of the satellite, it
can't very well mean the old film return satellites, which
were about as technologically sophisticated as anything
designed in 1963! That is to say, not very.

The freely given "leak" of security information and the
friendly breezy White House (NSC) confirmation of such
a security breach (they're always so chatty!) suggests to me
that whatever is falling from orbit in the next few months, the
very last thing it's likely to be is an "old photo reconnaisance
satellite" (makes it sound like it was a yard-sale Polaroid
camera).

This just in! 53 minutes ago, from tomorrow's New York
Times, more (and quite unofficial) information than Fox News:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/27/us/27spy.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&ref=us&adxnnlx=1201410051-QMwiKApZXIsGtpj/gpaQ4w

"Specialists who follow spy satellite operations suspect
it is an experimental imagery satellite built by Lockheed Martin
and launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in
December 2006 aboard a Delta II rocket. Shortly after the
satellite reached orbit, ground controllers lost the ability to
control it and were never able to regain communication. Since
it was launched, the experimental satellite has been in a slowly
decaying orbit. As of Jan. 22, it was moving in a circular orbit
at about 275 kilometers above the Earth... In the last month,
its orbit has declined by 15 to 20 kilometers... it's now just a
matter of weeks before it falls out of orbit."

Was it possibly a prototype for the planned "Future Imagery
Architecture" digital imaging spacecraft?

It is curious that, on the one hand, we cannot afford
to maintain or replace the one HST, originally planned to
let it spin down, then decided we'd save it one last time,
haven't done it yet, but then plan to let it go down in 2013,
after which there will no visible light telescope in orbit.

While, on the other, we seem to have no objection to
the cost of continuing to keep launching, controlling, and
maintaining the almost identical and almost as costly KH-12's
(at least four of them) and the KH-13's (at least three of
them) and a minimum of 10 KH-11's and a minimum of
20 KH-9's, and oh, a number of LACROSSE/VEGA radar
"spy" satellites and the network of orbital communications
satellites that service and coordinate all of them and...

You'd think we could afford ONE visual light telescope
in orbit after 2013. Hey, I got an idea! Let's borrow the
money for it from the Chinese, like we do for everything
else!

Re: [meteorite-list] TKW help -- Kem Kem??

2008-01-26 Thread tracy latimer

I was given to understand that Kem Kem was one of those "placeholder"
provisional names given to a meteorite that had not been classified. Since
there were a number of gray areas regarding TKW, find location, and if all the
pieces submitted as "Kem Kem" actually were from the same strewnfield, it had
never received an official number or classification. I bought a partslice when
it was new, unclassified, and all over the market, and would be tickled pink
but surprised if it were a eucrite (mine looks like a generic L6).

Hi David and List,

"Does anyone have the total known weight of Kem Kem and
Tata? I'm updating labels and cannot find the info anywhere."

If Kem Kem is NWA 1198, a eucrite, it's TKW = 14 gr; 1 piece; Met.Bull. 87
If Tata is NWA 1430, a IIIAB iron, it's TKW = 113 kg; 1 piece; Met.Bull. 87

Best wishes,

Bernd

Does anyone have the total known weight of Kem Kem and Tata? I'm updating
labels and cannot find the info anywhere.

Re: [meteorite-list] New Georgia find back in the meteorite community

2008-01-26 Thread Dr. Svend Buhl
My sincere congratulations Dave, this is a great achivement. The photo of
the "Pixall Pullpix for Beans machine" adds the authentic touch. One can
smell history.

P.S.: I wonder if I could order a bag of "Cannon's Meteorite Beans" from Mr.

Subject: [meteorite-list] New Georgia find back in the meteorite community

I went down to Statesboro last weekend and brought this back:

http://www.fallingrocks.com/Collections/Statesboro.htm

Nice to know it will stay in Georgia, and our MAG group
(www.meteoriteassociationofgeorgia.org) is pretty excited about it. Georgia
meteorites are special to kids in Georgia, as local falls and finds bring
the subject a lot closer to home for them (as everyone knows from their own
local experiences I'm sure). Sending this out so those so inclined or
intrigued can see better images than were previously submitted on the heels
of the classification.most especially I'm looking forward to Harlan
Trammell's return from the Florida Keys to check out the stone that fell in
the town of his alma mater!

Dave
