2008-02-12 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi All,

I've got 6 auctions ending tonight with a total of 684 grams of
material including some nice fusion crusted pieces, a BIG 225.9 gram
piece with crust, 4 Lots, one of which is all sliced pieces, 1 end
cut and a half slice as well. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZfreel3orn

I've also got about 900+ grams of NWA 869 whole individuals most of
them with very nice fusion crust. The NWA 869 is a very nice
meteorite with HUGE chondrules and is absolutely beautiful when
sliced and polished. These 869s have been hand picked out of many
many kilos of specimens 869s. Some are FULLY CRUSTED, most with only
minor and insignificant blemishes. They will be priced to move if
anyone wants a chance at them before I put them up for sale. Once I
put them on my site the price will be set at no less than .60/gram
with some really nice fully crusted individuals for $1/g. Email me
for a price if you're interested in the whole lot. I'll email photos
upon request.

I also have over a kilo of NWA 4300 H5 S2 W3 available. I'm moving
this fast at only $299 for the whole lot of 1187 grams total
weight. Lots of BIG pieces between 120-225 grams and some small
pieces. Here's the MetBul Data Link:

Hello Everyone,

I have added some new items to my store:

Chaves, Idutywa, Charlotte, Mount Vernon, Castalia, Tres Castillos, Santa
Apolonia, Coolac, Hamlet, Mount Joy, Ogallala, Bholgati, Orange River, Uwet,
Rush County, St. Lawrence, Hex River, Albion, Iredell, Indian Valley, Troup,
Forsyth, Fayetteville, Staunton, Honolulu, Bonita Springs, Crescent, Tilden,
Seymour, Deelfontein, Diep River, Social Circle, Calico Rock, Bristol,
Watson, Dhajala, Walker County, Frankfort, Akbarpur, Emery, and many others…

These and about 300 others that I have yet to list were acquired from an
older collection. Some are straight museum trades and others are “older NEMS
specimens, which are no longer available. In fact, Russ Kempton will no
longer be cutting obscure irons and many of his specimens have reached the
end of cutting. When I say that most of the above and the others I have are
no longer available, that pretty much sums it up. Some of these will not be
replaceable.  Times are a changing for witnessed falls, Low Known Weight
Falls and Historical specimens. I and other have seen a 100 to a 1000
percent increase in $$$ of the rarer and more obscure material.   In
retrospect, some of the prices I am getting are all time record prices… and
they are selling at these prices.  Anyway, most of these pieces have not
been available to the collector for a long time and with some specimens,
they have NEVER been available. Worth a look in any case.

Here are some highlights for this weeks auctions:

If some of you remember, a few months ago a piece of Bonita Springs, Florida

[meteorite-list] Dawn Journal - January 31, 2008

2008-02-12 Thread Ron Baalke

http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/journal_1_31_08.asp

Dawn Journal
Dr. Marc Rayman
January 31, 2008

Dear Dawnnoisseurs,

Now in interplanetary cruise, the Dawn spacecraft is following a much
more leisurely pace than the one it maintained during the initial
checkout phase of the mission. While its daily schedule is not
demanding, as it follows (and changes) its orbit around the Sun, it is
separating from Earth at nearly 4 light seconds per day (more than 1.1
million kilometers, or 720 thousand miles, per day). Every 8 hours, the
probe recedes from Earth by a distance equal to that between Earth and
the moon.

The spacecraft has accumulated more than 1000 hours of thrusting with
its ion propulsion system. Although far, far longer than the
overwhelming majority of spacecraft have operated their propulsion
systems, this represents only a small fraction of the total thrusting
required to complete its solar system journey. [Note to editors: This
milestone may be of significance only to human readers. When translated
for those who use different numbering systems or different time systems,
it may not yield an interesting result. (For that matter, 1000 hours is
not a special number when expressed in seconds, days, or millennia.)]

Most of Dawn's time is devoted to thrusting with its ion propulsion
system, but each week the spacecraft stops for a communications session
with controllers on distant Earth, during which it returns detailed data
on the performance of its subsystems throughout the previous week.
Reports of voltages and currents, temperatures and pressures, and myriad
other parameters allow engineers to determine how well the ship has been
doing and how to keep it sailing as smoothly as possible.

On January 14 shortly before 10:00 pm PST, a high energy subatomic
particle, a cosmic ray, traveled through one of the main panels of the
spacecraft and then penetrated one of the electronics units. The energy
it carried had been imparted to it through an unidentified cosmic
process, and after the particle had traveled across vast distances, that
energy was transferred to a small integrated circuit. Such an event is
not all that uncommon on spacecraft, and Dawn is designed so that most
space radiation does not interfere with its operation. The deposition of
energy in this particular component however triggered the electronics to
inform the software of a problem. To rectify the situation, other
software correctly responded by resetting the computer in that unit.

In the last log, we saw that two master
computers work together to oversee and control activities on the
spacecraft. The computer that was reset in this case was neither of
those; it was one of many auxiliary computers with more limited
responsibilities. In addition to resetting the computer, software
running in the main computer correctly reconfigured systems onboard to
safe mode. The spacecraft then awaited instructions from engineers on
Earth (or, more accurately, in Dawn mission control on the top floor of
JPL's whimsically named building 264).

A few hours later, when it was time for the weekly communications
session, the Deep Space Network and mission controllers promptly
recognized that the spacecraft was in safe mode. As with the safing in
November, a small team gathered during the
night to begin the diagnosis, and more team members joined after dawn.
It did not take long to reach a conclusive explanation based on the
error code stored by the software and other data downloaded from the
spacecraft. The culprit was a cosmic ray.

By the time the detailed analysis of the safing was concluding, mission
controllers were already commanding the spacecraft step-by-step out of
safe mode, returning it to its normal flight configuration. Within a few
days, Dawn was ready to resume work, and before the end of the week was
thrusting with its ion propulsion system again. (The effect of having
missed some thrusting that week is not significant for the mission.)

While Dawn will thrust during most of its interplanetary cruise, the
flight plan includes some periods of coasting in addition to the normal
weekly communications session. One such period was January 22 - 25. Most
of this time was devoted to updating software in the main computer.

The main software resides in 4 locations (well, 4 locations on the
spacecraft): primary and backup copies in the primary main computer and
primary and backup copies in the backup main computer. Three copies of
flight software 7.0 were installed on
the spacecraft in November. As reported in the last log,
ournal_12_17_07.asp#backup, the primary main computer was scheduled
to receive its backup copy during this break in thrusting.

While it had been planned before launch to transmit 7.0 to the
spacecraft in November, after the software was finalized, the need for
one additional change was recognized. For technical reasons it was not
necessary to change all the stored copies; rather, it was sufficient to
modify (or patch) only

2008-02-12 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello List,

I would like to congratulate John Blennert and Twink Monrad. As you all know,
John, Twink and our late Jim Kriegh are the discoverers of the Gold Basin strewn
field!

At the Tucson party, Twink received the honor of a Harvey award and, moreover,
Dolores Hill of UoA presented John Blennert and her with certificates stating
that
two Main Belt asteroids have now been named after them!!!

Bravo and sincere
congratulations!

Bernd

[meteorite-list] AD: Special - The Hard Nut from the Dark Planet Back to the Roots

2008-02-12 Thread Martin Altmann
Dear collectors,

On our weekly trip we'll take you back to our origins this time and as a
special, we will guide you to a strange place too.

The first stone, which we want to introduce today, belongs to that type of
meteorites, which for many collectors expresses the essence of their hobby.
An unequilibrated Type-3 chondrite.
While the chondrules-lovers enjoy to jaunt through the grand gardens of
chondrules with the unaided eye or with low magnification, discovering time
and again different and new ones, even the most blunted veteran collector
sits sometimes back and is moved by a shiver, making himself aware to have
on his desk a piece of the very primary matter, wherein lie all beginnings
of all solid matter in our solar systems.
Type-3 chondrites match closest that material, which formed the
planetesimals, which in turn formed the planets.
They are relicts from the beginnings, never heated to an extent, that they
lost their important characteristics. They are the keys for understanding as
they transport the information about the circumstances at the origin of our
solar systems. In type-3 chondrites the chondrules aren't that intergrown
with the matrix as in the meteorites of higher petrological grades, nor are
they chemically equalized. The formation of chondrules - not yet fully
understood - is one of the most important questions of modern planetology.

From our practice we experienced that type-3 chondrites are best to change a
mineral collector into a meteorite collector.
Once aware, that the 3ers are the ur-stuff, wherefrom ALL the mineral
specimen in the collections diversified - including as well as the
collectors themselves! - he will totally fall for those fascinating objects
of outer space.
It is a remarkable deficiency: in each mineralogical compendium, in each
course of studies in mineralogy at the universities must stand on the very
beginning such an unequilibrated chondrite!

Here you are. NWA 4900 as an L3 displays the whole variety of chondrules in
all sizes and in a high density.
The slices we priced at 9$/g.

http://www.chladnis-heirs.com/special-nwa4900.html

Second part is about our ureilite NWA 4896:

Ureilites are loved by collectors for being the most uncommon achondrites
falling from the sky and hated by dealers for bristling against abandoning
their innermost. Cut and polished they radiate with their iridescent
blackish grains and fields an aura of a mysterious elegance. Ureilites
contain a lot of carbon in various modifications from graphite up to
hexagonal and cubic diamonds,
much more metal than any other achondrites (forming together with the carbon
a lot of cohenite). And they are simply the hardest rocks in our solar
system. It was Novo-Urei wherein 120 years ago, the first extraterrestrial
diamonds were recovered.
At least as hard as to crack the stones themselves it is to crack the riddle
of their formation in modelling a parent body for that strange matter, to
explain the complex processes and history which led from a source material,
which must have resembled in several aspects some of the carbonaceous
chondrites, to that black beauties we display in our showcases.
It is a recurrent topic in mediocre SciFi-movies, that the hero is sentenced
by a totalitarian regime to be sent to a place, where noone ever escaped, to
escape, in most cases an icy planet. Obviously the writers aren't meteorite
collectors, else they would send their protagonists in the mines of the
ureilite parent body, a world of black and superhard rock.

With our NWA 4896 we proof to be not so heroic and won't torture ourselves
in trying to mess with this cross-grained belle to slice it up, because it
is a classical, extremely hard representative of its type. In a spacial
Golden ratio we removed the deposit classification specimen and decided to
make a collector happy in him/her adding a main mass and exemplary showpiece
of this fascinating type to the collection.
Our recreancy is advantageous for the collector, as we will let the stone go
at a price, which doesn't justice the material:
10$ per gram.
