Serge was kind enough to send me a Ghubara fragment for processing so now it's time for me to return the favor and make some money for him Currently I have about 115 grams of fragments available for $1 per gram or I will take $100 for the lot which includes shipping to any US address (I'll work something out for international buyers) These come from the coring process used to make the sphere for my collection, they range in size from dust to nic 4-5 gram chips. Hi all. I'm heading home in the morning with a bag full of meteorites. Ok, it's a small bag but I'm happy. I got 6 complete individuals and a fractured specimen. I interviewed some of the locals as well as hunters and should have at least a couple of good stories/videos! I'm not sure (nor is anyone else) why the dog decided to pick up the meteorite. However, the owners gladly wrote out a nice little story about how it happened and for everyone dying to know, the meteorite found by the dog was purchased by my friend Rob Wessel. [meteorite-list] My oddball UNWA revealed in photos
Hi Listees! I got my strange UNWA back from cutting today. It has been cut in half and the inside is finally revealed. First, a little backstory to explain what caught my eye. On the outside it looks like a million other weathered UNWA stony chondrites. But notice the shiny "veins" that are revealed on the surface of the specimen. They look different than the rest of the stone. At first glance it could be remnant fusion crust, but it's not. It appeared to be a vein of metal or oxidized metal, or glassy shock/melt material that weathered slower than the rest of the specimen. It should also be noted that the specimen is strongly attracted to a magnet. On the interior, several features stand out - 1) the matrix is similar to Al-Haggounia 001. It looks like enstatite, but upon closer inspection it appears to be some form of more familiar chondritic material. It has prolific metal grains, but they are very tiny. Most of the metal flecks I have seen in UNWA OC's is more coarse grained - the metal in this meteorite is much finer, and is only apparent as a general glittering when held in the hand and turned under a light. The metal grains are not easily discerned until you see them with a 10x loupe. The matrix is a deep brown to light tan with black grains that contrast the sparkly metal and enstatite-like pale grains. 2) There are numerous veins that run through the matrix like rivers. In fact, they resemble a large river delta as seen from a satellite photo. They appear black when looked at straight on, but are very reflective/shiny when held at an angle - like fresh pencil graphite on glossy black paper. The veins are attracted to a magnet and appear to have stronger attraction than areas with little or no veins. 3) there are a few faint relict chondrules and one large obvious chondrule. The large obvious one is white and is located near one edge. There are also a few distinct grey chondrules that are very small and can be seen in the close-up photo I posted - they are located very close to the large white chondrule, between the white chondrule and the edge of the specimen. There is also an apparent black chondrule nearby. Otherwise, chondrules are not seen in the majority of the matrix. Chondrules are mostly present in the areas of the matrix where the veins are sparse or not present. 4) there is no noticeable or distinct border or dual lithology - the differences between the chondritic portion and the EL-like portions of the matrix are subtle. After looking at the photos and reading this description, would anyone care to guess what petrologic type it might be? Any observations or comments would be appreciated. Is this a shocked OC with glassy/melt veins, or is it some kind of EL-type meteorite related to the Al-Haggounia/NWA 2828 types? Or is it some kind of highly-oxidized transitional chondrite with mesosiderite-like features? Does it contain Andromeda strain? Apologies if this is a repeat posting, I thought I sent one earlier today but it seems to be missing. Maybe the original will turn up later. Many thanks to those who have replied to my mail and as so often, I was not in full posession of the facts. In light of that, I'm delighted I to find I didn't get chewed out by anyone (maybe they're all too busy collecting rocks) Science's share is destined to be fulfilled and it appears that things happen quicker than I gave credit for when there are plenty of people on hand. I remain in respected and envious awe of those who go out and do the hard work, without whom science would get precious little and I include those who brave Morocco and the perils that entails to bring us NWAs. I'm still a little concerned at "how it may look" to the general public. I'm sure a journalist wouldn't wait to gather the facts before putting his opinion out to the world but "too soon" is on an extreme sliding scale depending on the bias of those with an opinion. List, A July 11, 2008 bolide over Spain has its orbit traced. It's from the Omicron Draconid meteor stream which originated from a 1920 breakup of Comet C/1919 Q2 Metcalf. Unlike the usual tiny gravel and dust of meteor streams, it is estimated to have been 2 tons or more, and some of it could have reached the ground, it's claimed. I have no idea how far the main mass went, we will only guess that the largest piece has been found when someone finds a larger piece every day. We found two broken stones today, and inside was the most amazing breccia. It reminds me of St Michel, white interior with spiderweb veins and nice darker clasts in a light cream-colored matrix. I spoke to most hunters today, and it is almost unanimous that no one wants to sell stones. I have seven myself and would not sell any of them. Too hard to find, too much walking and the money would not make much difference. I will keep a nice jar full of pristine flawless stones that have never been rained on. At least the weather looks great for the next 10 days, if not a little warm. It seems that virtually everyone who has come here has found a stone, a wonderful thing, that hunters are being rewarded for their hard work. I would not expect, at least at this point, for many stones to be offered for sale. Again, even at $50 gram or more, so far most people would not even pay expenses for the trip, as most stones are under 20 grams. I guess that about 10% are larger than that. I am sure the meteorite will be named West, Cottonwood is already a name, and I don't think this deserves to be a (b). A creek is just that, and I know doug want's it named that after the landowner's creek, but NOMCOM is not going to accept that. West, is a great name.
