[meteorite-list] A large rock...Zimbabwes’ Nkayi village

2009-03-21 Thread Mike Groetz

A large rock mysteriously falls from the sky in Zimbabwes’ Nkayi village

http://www.zimdiaspora.com/index.php?option=com_contentview=articleid=894:a-large-rock-mysteriously-falls-from-the-sky-in-zimbabwes-nkayi-villagecatid=38:travel-tipsItemid=274

Thursday, 19 March 2009 15:02 administrator News
By Owen Gagare

A LARGE rock, weighing about 100 kilogrammes fell from the “sky,” in Nkayi at
the beginning of the month, shocking villagers while at the same time sending
the whole district wild with excitement and speculation.

The District Administrator for Nkayi, Ms Nosizi Dube, and the Police Officer
Commanding Crime in the district, Superintendent Chanetsa Maswi, confirmed the
incident.

The stone, many villagers now believe. is a gift from God, fell with a
thunderous noise in Madlilika Village in the Mjena area of Lukampa under Chief
Sikhobokhobo at about 5pm on 1 March.

It fell five metres from two villagers, Mr Judia Sibanda and Mr Mncedisi
Ngwenya, who were herding cattle in the bush.

In interviews on Tuesday, villagers from the area said they heard a thunderous
sound coming from the “sky,” and another sound resembling a bomb exploding.
“The noise later fizzled into a sound similar to one made by an aircaft on
take-off before dying away,” said Mrs Nomsa Ngwenya, a villager.

On seeing the rock fall, Mr Sibanda and Mr Ngwenya rushed to their home where
they told their father, Mr Spempokuhle Ngwenya, of the incident.

Mr Ngwenya told other villagers and together they went to inspect the rock,
after which it was agreed that he keeps it since his children had found it.

People from the area believe the rock could have been a special gift from God
containing very precious minerals while others believe that it could have been
sent by their ancestors in a bid to communicate something to them.

They have since vowed to jealously guard it until they get a satisfactory
explanation on what it symbolises or what mineral it contains.

They have been so determined to keep the rock that they even turned down Chief
Sikhobokhobo’s request to have the rock.

To date they have only allowed about 15 kilogrammes of the rock to be taken by
the Government, through the District Administrator’s Office and security
agents, so that it may go for testing.

The villagers, however, reluctantly released the rock.

According to Mr Sethukile Ndlovu, a teacher at Mjena Primary School, who also
comes from the area, the villagers believe that the unique stone could turn out
to be something of great significance.

“There is a lot of speculation at the moment but one thing for sure is that no
one seems to think it is a bad omen, although people were initially shocked by
the incident. A number of people touched the stone and nothing has happened to
them but the strongest belief seems to be that it is a precious stone,” he said.

“There is belief that it could be containing a very rich mineral while others
believe that either God or their ancestors were trying to communicate with
them. So, whichever way you look at it, this rock is important to the people of
this area and they are keen to find out what it really is. “There is belief
that the rock could be a good omen for the area and if there are any benefits
from it, the people do not want to lose out.”

Mr Ndlovu said the unique sound, which accompanied the rock made some people
believe that there was something supernatural about it.

He says the rock was heard in the entire Lukampa area as well as Matshena,
Mbuma and Nkalathi areas.

According to Mr Memukeli Khumalo, also from Mjena, Chief Sikhobokhobo sent two
of his advisors to have a look at the stone.

The chief also requested that the stone be sent to him but the villagers
refused. “At that meeting people said they had never seen anything like that.
The people refused to let go of the rock because they felt that if it was of
significance, then its significance would be here. At that meeting, there was
talk of raising spirit mediums so that they could find out what the stone meant
but we failed to raise them during the meeting,” he said.

When Chief Sikhobokhobo confirmed the incident he alerted the DA who in turn
alerted security agents.

The Assistant DA, Mr Knowledge Chikanga, then travelled to the area with the
police last week.

“We wanted to see what it was for ourselves and from a security point of view,
establish whether it was of harm or not. The elders from the area held onto the
rock but in the end they gave us one piece. We hope to conduct tests on the
rock,” said Ms Dube, the DA.

The rock weighing 15kg is being kept at Nkayi Police Station.

Supt Maswi said the rock would be tested by officials from the Ministry of
Mines and Mining Development to establish its chemical composition.

The rock is black and very smooth outside. It is grey inside.

Contacted for comment, officials from the Geological Survey Department said
they could not explain the phenomenon since

[meteorite-list] Remains of the Yucatan meteorite found in Cuba

2009-03-21 Thread Mike Groetz

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/americas/cuba/AP/story/960074.html

Remains of the Yucatan meteorite found in Cuba

HAVANA -- -- Traces of the impact of a cosmic object, that occurred some 65
million years ago, have been found in rocks of Viñales, in the western of Cuba.

Cubavisión International reported that evidence of the impact that made a
crater of 180 Km in diameter in the peninsula of Yucatan, remain near El
Moncada town, Viñales.

The Cuban TV channel said large rocky blocks have been found in the area with
high concentrations of iridium (abundant in meteorites and asteroids) and
deformed quartz, which shows a relation with the disaster that generated a
major explosion that, according to members of the international scientific
community, could have been partially or totally responsible for the extinction
of dinosaurs.

Remains of the meteorite known as Chicxulub, have been also found in the
provinces of Matanzas and Havana.

[meteorite-list] West, Texas Photo Journal and Personal Wrap-up

2009-03-21 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

Greetings all, from sunny old Tucson.

As if I needed anything extra to do after nearly three weeks in the
Tucson showroom, then straight off to West, Texas, I rocketed off to
California on a business trip and after that, well, there was other
stuff to deal with. But I don't have to tell those of you who are
entrepreneurs and own your own businesses what that is all about.

So, eventually, after much sorting, editing, and consideration, we
have finally been through every one of our West, Texas meteorite hunt
adventure shots, and compiled a photo journal of our favorites. That
was some task considering we shot almost 900 pictures.

Most of you probably don't know my good friend and fellow Tucsonan
Suzanne Morrison. She's a modest person and wouldn't tell you that
when we met ten years back, she was already an accomplished meteorite
hunter. She hunted with Steve Schoner years ago and was great friends
with Jim Kriegh. Those who know her well occasionally use her
nickname, which is The Queen of Holbrook.

Some years ago Suzanne moved on to other things and hadn't been in the
field for ages, but when I mentioned to her that I was headed to West,
she immediately said, I'm going with you. Well, she came back with a
vengeance. While hunting with our pal Sonny, she made a remarkable
find that put most of the rest of us to shame : )

You can see what Suzanne discovered and all our other assorted
favorite pictures, arranged chronologically, in an exclusive photo
journal here:

http://www.aerolite.org/expeditions/west/west-texas-meteorite.htm

Photos are by Suzanne Morrison, Steve Arnold, Mike Bandli, Mike
Miller, Leigh Anne DelRay and myself.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I have to give a special shout
out to Mike Bandli -- one of the nicest, most enthusiastic guys you'll
ever meet -- and Patrick Thompson -- who is an incredibly funny and
entertaining comrade -- both of whom found their first ever meteorites
while hunting with us. Patrick went on to find one more than me, which
means he is on detention during the gem show next year. Also, kudos to
Jim Schwade -- really the only respectable member of our team : ) --
who put in long days from sunup to sunset and was every bit as
sprightly and energetic as guys half his age. He made some nice finds
too. And what about that Steve Arnold? 69 meteorites, holy cow! We are
placing a serious handicap on him during future hunts.

It was a privilege to go out adventuring with so many great people,
and especially to see John Sinclair back in the field with us. Last
time I hunted with John was all the way back in Park Forest. Amazing
and memorable though Park Forest was, West was even better.

Finally, I want to add my thanks to those of you who complimented
Michael Johnson for running his online reporting of the West hunt on
RFSPOD, and hats off to everyone who flew, drove or walked to McLennan
County to be part of the chase. That was some adventure.

With best wishes to all of you, around the world,

Geoff N.

Available Now

Hello List,

I am excited to offer the first large full slices of
my 1,673g West, Texas
specimen. Again, this stone was recovered
(rescued) the day before the
monsoon rains hit the strewnfield this last week.

These slices were expertly cut by Marlin Cilz at the
Montana Meteorite Lab
with one of their wire saws. With many years of
experience cutting
meteorites, Marlin made some stellar
slices.

Due to the very fragile fusion crust, none of the slices
preserved 100% of
the crust unbroken all the way around. Possibly, if
the slices were thicker,
we would have had slightly better results, but due to the
desire to keep
these slices as thin as possible, the slices endured some
chipping of the crust
as the wire saw went through it.

Nonetheless, these are amazing looking slices.
The brecciation is very
pronounced in these slices. Each full slice has
a zone of light material, that
stands in strong contrast to the zones with strong
veining.

With the end results of the two other known 1.5kg and
1.7kg masses still in
question (whether they will be cut or not), it is
possible that this might be
the only chance for collectors to get a large full
slice of this very
popular fall. If the another piece is found, or
if one of the other two known
larger masses would be cut, it is a crap shoot on
what their interiors will look
like (heavily brecciated to not at all
brecciated). Also, any rock that
could be found after the strong rains, from this last
week, has a much greater
chance of severe rusting on the interior.

On a side note, Marlin kept commenting on how these
West specimen slices
look EXACTLY like Peekskill. And he should know
as he cut most of the Peekskill
back in the day.

With the end pieces, and the saw losses from the
cutting, there will be less
than 1kg of full slices that could make it to market
from this mass. I
chose to have this specimen cut to generate more
slices, yet smaller in size,
rather than fewer slices that would have been larger
in size and weight (and
price). This will allow more institutions and
collectors to obtain a full slice
for their collections, and at lower overall prices.

While the mass is still being sliced from, Marlin
told me that the 78.1g
full slice offered here today will be the largest
slice from this mass.

While I would like to make as much profit as possible
from the sales, I am
pricing these to sell quickly. While I think
these are worth more than what I
am selling them for, I also understand some people
will be hesitant to pay
too much for a slice now, fearing more slices might
show up later at a lower
price. But even if another rain-avoided mass
shows up in slices, I seriously
doubt they will be offered much lower in price than
what I am offering these
for.

NOTICE: If these first 8 slices sell out too fast,
I reserve the right to
raise the prices on the next batch of slices that come
from the saw in the
next few days. Also, this price is NOT for part
slices or smaller full slices I
have made from other smaller specimens. These
prices are only for the first
8 full slices of the 1,673g Mass.

Contact me off list if you would like more
information on what is available.

Also, if you are possibly interested a part slice
from this mass, let me
know as well.

Hi Geoff,

thanks for your West/Texas photo report. It's simply great to know some

[meteorite-list] Exciting Spring Break Finds!

2009-03-21 Thread Erik Fisler

Hi all,

This past week was my spring break so I took
my friend Austin out for the week to find his
first meteorite. We met up with Nate at Red
Lake Sunday and hunted with no luck. Monday
and Tuesday we hunted the Gold Basin area and
camped on the GPAA claims. We ran into
Stan, Jim Smaller and John Wolfe as well.
Nate purchased a nice piece of Palo Verde
Mine from John. My friend didn't find anything
but I found 3 Gold Basin area meteorites.
Nate found two nice fragments in some pretty
hard hit areas.

71.6g's in 5 pieces
36.7g fragment
20.8g complete stone

Wednesday we hunted the South side of Franconia.
Nate found a small Palo Verde Mine L Chondrite
right on the surface. Unfortunately my friend and
I got skunked. On a good note, we ran into Stan,
Moni, and Bob Verish.

Thursday the three of us trekked into
Franconia's North side in search of some missed
Buck Mountain and Franconia's. Thursday Nate
found 3 individuals with great features. My friend
found his first 2 meteorites ever. The excitement
of his finds was very contagious and reminded me of
my first finds. I found a small 7.8g stone by eye
and a 2.3g Sacramento Wash 005 chondritic iron.
Friday my friend got skunked, but Nate and I made
out with some finds. Nate found a few stones and
I had not found anything all day. An entire hour
was dedicated to finding my friend who found himself
lost in the Warms Springs Wilderness area...
I found a 14.7g stone and then didn't find anything
for a few hours till I dug up a 25.5g stone.

Only a few feet from the 25.5g stone I walked over
a 587.8g Franconia. Around it were 4 or 5 puzzle
pieces to the stone.

[meteorite-list] AD: West slice on Ebay, and more photos of individuals up

2009-03-21 Thread MeteorHntr
Hey List,

I mistakenly put a great 8.8 gram brecciated Part Slice of West up on Ebay
for just 24 hours when I planned on having it up for 5 days. Oh well, it
closes in an hour or so. It will be interesting to see where it ends up.

I am also trying to get photos of all the individual specimens I have
listed, and not sold yet, up on Photobucket tonight. The new photos are the
ones
with a yellow background.

Ebay link here:

[meteorite-list] Dirrandbandi vs Hamilton

2009-03-21 Thread Bob WALKER

Listoids

QMIG update

http://www.qmig.org

I've uploaded some data on the compositions of coexisting olivene and
pyroxene (Fa and Fs) for Ellerslie, Hamilton and Wynella in order to help
Jeff identify his Dirranbandi rox

The data is from the Records of the Australian Museum and contains enough
other useful data that I will have to seek permission to webpublish it in
its entirety

I'll see what other information I can find to help him out...
