[meteorite-list] AD : Big Libyan Desert Glass, UNWA, and Oriented Falls

2009-10-25 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Folks!

I have a few new or interesting offerings that might be of interest to some.

First, I have a big, wind-sculpted individual of Libyan Desert Glass.
(has a few minor recent chips, but no major breakages, you have to
look closely to notice them). This piece weighs 128 grams and has
nice translucency and a few tiny inclusions. The best aspect is the
wind-sculpted shape that is quite unique, and it displays well in
several positions. See it here -

http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/126516/Big-Sculptured-Libyan-Desert-Glass--Translucent-128-grams_1074375.html

Second, I have a UNWA endcut hand specimen -

http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/126516/Big-Dark-UNWA-Meteorite-Endcut--240-grams_1074384.html

Lastly, some nice oriented whole-stones that are 98-100%
freshly-crusted. These are top-quality examples of their respective
falls. Both show roll-over lips and heat shield shapes.

Oum Dreyga -
http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/126516/Oum-Dreyga-Witnessed-Fall-Meteorite--Oriented-Whole-Stone_1065564.html

Chergach -
http://www.galactic-stone.com/product/126516/Chergach-Meteorite--Oriented-Whole-Stone-w-Rollover-Lip_1065557.html

(I also have fully-crusted Bensour and Bassikounou stones available)

Don't forget to use the coupon code metlist at checkout for a 25%
discount on your entire order.

Thanks for looking and have nice sunday! :)

[meteorite-list] Tucson Meteorite Auction Catalog now up - call for entries (Ad)

2009-10-25 Thread Michael Blood
Greetings all,
To see the first 20 entries in the 11th Tucson Meteorite
Auction, please go to:

http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/TucsonAuction10.html

Already, we have some major entries, such as a Carbonado
Black Diamond over 150cts, a 20LB lot of Trinitite, 2 super nice
(and substantially sized) Los Angels slices (both LA 001 LA 002),
Special NWA type specimens, including lunar and other ultra rare
Types, A spectacular Gujba Full Slice with an esxceptionally large
chondrule, etc. This auction is finally gaining momentum in submission
Of some major lots on a regular basis. Do be encouraged. (Super valuable
Specimens may qualify for individual negotiation of consignment fee)
Please note people may submit entries at the old consignment
Rate of 10% for the next 3 weeks (Nov. 15). After that time the consignment
Fee will increase periodically up until the auction itself. Several people
Have assured me they are sending in 10 or more specimens in the immediate
Future, so, keep an eye on the Catalog and submit your material (JPG
And description) ASAP to be able to choose what part of the auction you
would like your lots listed, save on commission and get the most out of
The free advertizing.
It is looking like after MONTHS of unexpectedly laborious
preparation my book on ASPECTS OF METEORITE ORIENTATION
Will finally be out by the time we go to the show. I am planning on having
Numbered copies available at the show for personalized signatures.
I would LOVE to see multiple oriented specimens entered in this
auction to make it a theme. Bring 'm on.
Please contact me off list to submit worthy entries and/or to make
Absentee bids.
Best wishes, Michael
PS: Fred Olson, please contact me off list.

2009-10-25 Thread Ed Deckert

From http://readrussia.com/blog/News/00264/
The most striking fact here is that how the meteorite managed to hit
Latvia, one of the smallest countries in the world. (This former Soviet
republic of 2 million people is only 300 miles wide, i.e. much less than 1
percent of earth's surface.)

I guess the reporter there would be completely blown away to learn of
Claxton hitting a mailbox! LOL

Possible explanations:

1) Publicity stunt to increase tourism perpetrated by Borat
2) Russian weapons test gone bad
3) Underground weapons cache spontaneously exploded
4) Latest experiment from balloon boy's dad

Wouldn't a meteor big enough to cause this type of crater be buried
under the ground? Wouldn't there be more than 1 meteorite?

Cool video and crater.

Really dont think the crater looks like a meteorite crater or the video looks

Really dont think the crater looks like a meteorite crater or the video looks
anything like a meteorite landing would look like. I also can not find too
much info on it, you would think that if it were true there would be a little
 more info out there.

 Possible explanations:

 1) Publicity stunt to increase tourism perpetrated by Borat
 2) Russian weapons test gone bad
 3) Underground weapons cache spontaneously exploded
 4) Latest experiment from balloon boy's dad

Wouldn't a meteor big enough to cause this type of crater be buried
under the ground? Wouldn't there be more than 1 meteorite?

 Cool video and crater.

Any thoughts on whether this Latvia meteorite impact is real or not?

A meteorite that was big enough and fast enough to create a 02 meter
crater fell in Latvia, one of the smallest country in the world. Here
are a few links, I think we will be hearing a lot about this one.

Ha! I was expecting a Decepticon to pop out of that hole. Or maybe that was
the lost piece of Allspark from the last movie. Too bad, as I have strong
ties to Latvia and would love for there to be a new Latvian meteorite. I
mean, it has been nearly 120 years since the last one.

[meteorite-list] Latvian Meteorite

2009-10-25 Thread Phil Whitmer

http://en.rian.ru/world/20091026/156588612.html

Meteorite falls in northern Latvia, no one injured - local media

RIGA, October 26 (RIA Novosti) - No one was injured after a meteorite fell
near a small town in northern Latvia on Sunday, local Latvian media
reported.

According to media reports, the meteorite fell near a residential house on
the outskirts of Mazsalaca town in the Valmiera district of Latvia, leaving
a crater of some 20 meters (66 feet) in diameter and 10 meters (33 feet)
deep.

A spokesperson for the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service said that
rescuers and soldiers immediately cordoned off the territory, however, it is
still not clear whether it was an asteroid or a space satellite.

The territory has been immediately cordoned off as we still do not know
what fell down from the sky. According to preliminary information, it was a
meteorite. However, it is possible that it was a [space] satellite or its
fragment. A radioactive contamination is also possible, she said.

A witness, who saw the object falling from the sky and leaving a burning
trace behind, said it was making a noise similar to the one of an aircraft
flying at a low altitude.

On March 2 this year, a 35-meter asteroid came within 72,000 kilometers of
Earth. The size of the space rock was comparable to the asteroid that caused
the Tunguska disaster, but there was no danger of a collision.

On June 30, 1908, an explosion equivalent to between 5 and 30 megatons of
TNT occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in a remote region of
Russia's Siberia.

The Tunguska blast flattened 80 million trees, destroying an area of around
2,150 sq km (830 sq miles).

It is assumed that a huge meteorite had hit the area, although research
expeditions failed to find an obvious crater.

I don't know, that crater video looked kind of fakey to me.

Having never really looked into it, I didn't think one could use liquids on a
vibratory lap. I've only seen them used with dry grit. I'll be firing one up
this winter so I would like to hear myself what to do.
