Thanks Keith for the photos - it certainly was a great time!  Between all the
lectures and great people, I know I didn't get to see everything...  It was an
amazing gathering of AZ meteorites and great people.  Thanks Dolores for the
great event!!

Just loaded a large bunch of photos taken today at the Arizona Meteorite

It was a blast, big turn out, no time to do descriptions, sorry.
I'll be adding more.

They also had Meteor on (1979), which predates all the disasteroid
movies that came out at the time of Shoemaker-Levy 9.

Not quite as bad a movie, but not the bast in the world given it cast:

Karl Malden

those famous Russian actors
Natalie Wood and Brian Keith

and a cast of thousands (at least hundreds) as it includes all those

They had a movie called Asteroid on earlier today. That one is a real
keeper as well. I love it when rocks just explode into huge fireballs on
 impact with the ground :-)

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteor Storm on Syfy

2010-01-31 Thread Bob Loeffler
My favorite from the 70's was A Fire in the Sky from 1978 (not the crappy
ET movie with the same name from 1993 with DB Sweeney). It had Richard
Crenna and Merlin Olson in it. See here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077553/ Not a great cast, but I think I liked
it because (1) it was about a comet that was going to hit Phoenix... and I'm
from Phoenix, (2) it actually hit Phoenix in the movie... instead of being
blown up by nuclear warheads just before entering the atmosphere, and (3) I
was only 10 years old at the time... so it was believable. If I saw it
again today, I might not like it as much. :-)

Anyway, I did see Meteor Storm last night on SyFy and it was as bad as I
expected. I haven't seen a good movie on SyFy in years... but for some odd
reason, I still flip the channel to it, just in case they might have a good
movie for once. I loved it when the lady said that the meteorites were the
size of bullets (when she was on Alcatraz Island), but 10 seconds earlier
when she had one in her hand and was studying it, it was about the size of
her fist. :-) And even though the meteorites were supposed to be small,
they would take out 3 floors of an office or apartment building when they
hit, yet impacts to people or the ground caused holes that were just a few
inches in diameter. As expected, the special effects were horrible,
especially the flames from the Aries rocket that they launched at the end of
the movie. The flames looked like they were made on an old PC computer
using CGA (not CGI) EGA graphics. Instead of a smooth progression from one
color to another, you could see a definite yellow area, then a definite
orange area, etc. At least the acting wasn't horrible. Not great, but not
the worst I've seen.

It was just another really bad movie that won't help the education of
humanity. But, obviously, it was only meant for mindless entertainment.
Mindless? Yes. Entertainment? I'm not sure about that. :-)

But, there was at least one thing that I think was good. The big asteroid
that was going to hit at the end of the movie was called Apophis, which is a
real NEO (near Earth object). Good for them. There was one other good thing,
but I can't remember it. Sorry.

Regards,

Bob

[meteorite-list] Melt vein micrograph

Hi list, I thought some of you might get a kick out of a melt vein
micrograph I just took. It is in DaG 478 an L6. Only classified as an L6 but
it
has some of the most beautiful impact melt.

I just bought an aus Jena Neophot 21 to get some hard to find parts and I
am having fun with Scope Time on a very cold snowing day in Idaho.

I wish I was in Tucson.

I reduced the shot to 2000 Pixel wide which will allow me to send a large
file with out exceeding the size limit of most Internet carriers.

I think you will like it if you are a metal fan. Just email me if you
want me to send it.

[meteorite-list] Fwd: Arizona regulations

2010-01-31 Thread cdtucson

 CD,

Are you from Arizona? Do you have experience with the desert? Even this time
of year it is very hazardous so follow all recommendations about desert
 travel and preparedness.

Include in your 'all but' list: petrified wood, fossils, prehistoric
artifacts and historic site artifacts. Oh, and feathers or parts of all rare
and endangered critters. There are also some cactii and cactii parts and
pieces on the list. The feds, USFS included, are really stiff on
enforcement and prosecution of prehistoric pot hunters and professional
artifact operations. Don't get caught with anything mechanical to dig with.

Having worked for US Forest Service, I have an answer but it may be dated.
The best bet is to call a FS office anonymously and ask what the policy is.
The Coronado National Forest headquarters is in Tucson. Here is the link to
 the directory http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coronado/forest/contact/contact.shtml.
Call the Santa Catalina Ranger District in Tucson and just ask about rock
hunting, metal detecting and if you need a permit. The less specific you are
 the better.

If a law enforcement officer checks up on you in the field, just tell him
you are hunting for rocks or looking for gold. Claim ignorance if he tells
you, you are doing something wrong. Most often the officer will stop you to
check for drugs or to caution you about illegal aliens and drug runners.

The USFS sells a map on a scale of 1/2 to a mile that shows FS roads,
campgrounds, land ownership, wilderness areas, etc. There is also an
Arizona Atlas Gazetteer which has detailed maps of the whole state of
Arizona. It is sold at Wal Mart, K Mart, and book stores. As a minimum, you
need the Gazetteer to identify Federal Lands, Indian reservations, State
 trust lands and private land.

DO NOT get caught hunting on the Indian reservations - they are considered
sovereign nations and have their own laws and penalties. They will
confiscate your finds and equipment. They do not give out permits. Don't
 bother to ask.

State Trust Lands have signs that say something to the effect of 'This is
Arizona State Trust Land. You must have a permit to be in this area.' It's
mostly a bluff. Stay on the roads and have a camera handy. If anyone asks,
just tell them you are taking pictures. A permit means you have to be a
rancher, land custodian, researcher or have a hunting permit. There are
other permits issued but it is a long and complicated process. I've lived in
Arizona for 35 years and have never seen an enforcement officer on State
 Trust Lands.

CAUTION: If you see a group of people walking single file, unless they are
easily identified, they are probably illegal immigrants or involved with
drugs: do not approach them, do not stare at them, do not take pictures, do
not let them see you make a cell phone call. If possible go hunting with
several friends. If you have a pistol - carry it. Arizona is a
right-to-carry state but you must have your pistol fully visible on your
 person or in your vehicle.

Wish I was there. We're north of Tucson 160 miles at Show Low. 6000'
elevation in the White Mountains and dealing with lots of snow.

 I hope this has helped.

Be careful out there and have fun.

 Bernd and Listerites,

I was able to put a hold on Rocks From Space: Meteorites
and Meteorite Hunters for $32 New, and it seems the book
store still has more copies in stock at that location.
When I am done with work tomorrow ill jump on the train and
pick up my copy before I head to the gym.

Re: [meteorite-list] Historic meteorite scale cube?

2010-01-31 Thread Jeff Kuyken

Thanks Tom! ;-)

Actually Tom showed me these wooden cubes last week and I mentioned he
should sell some as I'm sure there are many collectors who would love to use
them. I personally think they would look really good with 18th and 19th
century specimens with old museum labels.

Cheers,

Jeff

Hi list, Indulge me on this one. I still have scale cube envy over
ordering my cube from Jeff a few seconds too late to get the lowest
number!

His are the best I have seen and I am not trying to better those perfect
cubes. I treasure my #14 cube!

That said, It is snowing up here in Idaho and there is not much to do. I
made some old looking wood scale cubes to go with historic falls.
Perhaps
it is a dumb idea but I put one on eBay at $1 to see if there is any
demand.
