[meteorite-list] Tally of WI fall masses
Hi All, In the interest of trying to estimate the TKW of the SW Wisconsin fall, I've gone back through all the Met-List posts, RFSPOD images, newspaper stories, web-based articles, and anything else public I could find to generate a rough stone tally. Obviously this is far from a complete list, and in many cases I don't know the masses of particular finds -- only that a find exists. I'm sure others here can help filling in the blanks, adding stones that I've missed, or correcting information where my data is bad or incomplete. The finds below are alphabetical by finder name (when known); unknown finder names are at the end. Steve Arnold: 176.1g Larry Atkins: at least one find (Ref: RFSPD 4/25) Karl Aston: 160.7g Jim Baxter: 152g, 20g, + 1 more Bren (farmer's wife): ~100g Sonny Clary: 205.6g (Brix find), 144g, 16.8g Michael Cottingham: 51g (hammer) Mike Farmer: 131g, 36g, 20g, 17g Ruben Garcia: 25g, 9.2g, 7.7g, + others? Re: [meteorite-list] Tally of WI fall masses
Most interesting, Robert, thank you! Then again, there may be a lot of (unknown) people who have not reported their grand totals in finds so far, and last but not least I imagine quite a big load of stones may still be resting there in that supposedly long strewn field, awaiting their finder one of these days... From my (geographically far-away) point of perspective, what I found especially nice to read was that the cooperation with the farmers seems to be good. The people there in Wisconsin seem to be friendly, and so it generally seems to be an overall good hunting atmosphere. Which, while reading all those different posts, does not in any case (unfortunately), but should generally reflect itself on this forum. A special question: are there farmers who strictly oppose scanning their land? I mean, who better want to get out for a search by themselves alone and find something, or just opposing any search by outsiders for reasons whatever (..may be bad experiences with hunters on their land, or may be an attitude of not being interested in all of this hype?). Seems to be a very nice brecciated meteorite visually, by the way! Good luck to the potential finders, Alex Berlin/Germany Original-Nachricht Datum: Tue, 4 May 2010 11:52:00 -0700 Von: Matson, Robert D. robert.d.mat...@saic.com An: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Betreff: [meteorite-list] Tally of WI fall masses Hi All, In the interest of trying to estimate the TKW of the SW Wisconsin fall, I've gone back through all the Met-List posts, RFSPOD images, newspaper stories, web-based articles, and anything else public I could find to generate a rough stone tally. Hey Rob, Thanks for taking-the-time to put this-tentative-tally-together (how's that for a bit of alliteration?). But hey... I've got a reputation to maintain here. My previous post said ... ONE of my finds was probably THE smallest meteorite found there. I found it within my first 3 hrs hunting, but that 3.2gramer wasn't the only one I found. Heck, I found one almost FOUR times that big! (OK, so it was only 3.6875 times as big, weighing a wrist-breaking 11.8g ;-( And Jerry found one at ~ 5grams. We wanted to let others find the big ones. Re: [meteorite-list] ........... school presentation.....
Greg, List, I have spoke at 3 schools in the past week. I think mendota is going to have hundreds of little meteorite hunters and collectors. There is going to be an article in Meteorite times about my hunt and my school presintations, and pics of it all to, not 100% sure what all is going to be in the article just yet or what photos are going to be used, but cant wait to get it done and be able to see it. My kids are going to think I'm famous, it is a really cool thing. The whole experience from this fall has literally changed my life in a few ways, the $$ is not one, it is bigger than that. I made great friends with guys that I idolized, and made some really good connections and even got a job oppurtunity out of it. All the kids were really excited to hold a piece of an asteroid and something older than Earth. They were amazed that they actually came to outer space and landed here on earth. One of the 2nd grade girls was naming off meteorites. She asked me about the Tuscon Ring, my jaw dropped. She actually knew quite a bit about meteorites. That was really cool. I was blown away. Good luck with the kids, they are all going to be interested, even more than you know. Re: [meteorite-list] odd stone - a melt maybe?
So, should I expect to see more emails about the cutting of a stone or is it okay to cut lumpy stones? Btw, how would this apply to the music industry? Would it be okay to slice up Watts, Wood, and Richards, but not Jagger and maybe Wyman? :-) On May 4, 2010, at 7:15 PM, Phil Morgan wrote: Hey everyone, I can't make it to Wisconsin so had to console myself with a little adventure with the saw. [meteorite-list] keeping your wisconsin finds
Hi list. I have really been puzzled by all the new wisconsin meteorite finds that are being sold right away.It seems no one is keeping any for their collections. If I'm lucky enought to find any when I go back up,I am keeping mine. I don't need the money that bad.I fully understand if you have money problems or no job,I really understand. But it seems some people are just doing it to see where the price will end up to determine what per gram ratio will be determined. But right here and now,I will make a statement I'll stand by.If I am lucky to find more than 1 stone, I will sell any others I find for $20 a gram.I want the collecter to be able to afford these new visitors from space. I have no problem what others are doing with their finds. Is anyone keeping their finds?? __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Wisconsin Meteorite Hunt.
I was wondering if this was going to turn up on the mailing list or not... We arrived at this property, obtained permission from the landowners to search it, and were approached by this gent who was upset because he was there before us. It doesn't work that way, and in any case it's up to the landowner to give or deny permission to hunt. Ironically, we had just left a parcel of land where four other groups/individuals came and went while we were searching it. We stopped and chatted cordially with a few of them, shared information, and all had a Coke and a smile without undue snippiness. Sonny didn't do anything wrong here, and it is my observation that he is a very conscientious gent whom I would be happy to hunt with again. The man pulled up his truck, looked through us like we were non-exixtant ignoring the fact, as we protested, that we had previous permission to search the property in question. Sonny was so aggressive that he didn't even notice that one of our team members was a 77 year old man that was the Patriarch of the family that owned the land. He ignored us and hauled ass straight up to the front door trying to conive his way in. Nice work Sonny. You deserve a big pat on the back. You belong in Georgia. You're a real inspiration to us all you greedy S*B. Bill PS: Keep pumping the lack of material. Time will tell. Hi All, I just returned from my second hunt in Wisconsin. I hunted a total of 9 days in the field. I really enjoyed spending time with the other hunters and got to know some of the locals too. Without a doubt, Wisconsin is the friendliest state I have ever visited. Everyone would invite you into their homes, also allow you to hunt for meteorites on their property. I even had a chance to milk a cow. I want to say thanks to Rob Matson and Mark Fries for the great work with the Doppler Radar. Terry Boudreaux and Karl Aston played a major role in gaining access to hunt many of the properties. These 2 guys are awesome. What really made this trip enjoyable was spending time with everyone hunting. After 9 days of hunting I was able to find 3 meteorites, one with the assistance of Brix (my dog) and the other 2 on my second trip out. The total of my finds is 366.4 grams. I hope to post pictures from the hunt on my website within the next week. The rumors of many stones being recovered is simply not true. Out of 6 guys hunting for 4 days( covering a lot of ground ) only 2 stones were recovered. On the previous hunt with 10 guys hunting only 4 stones were recovered. By far, the best complete stone I have seen is Rob Wesel's. Another kudo's goes out to Joe Kerchner for his magnificent find. Eric Wichman also made some outstanding finds. Many of the fields are now being plowed and planted. Further recovery of meteorites is becoming more difficult. It would be nice to compile a list of everyone's finds to determine the TKW so far. Good luck to all of the guys that are still out in the field.
