Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-07 Thread Andreas Gren
Hi Al,Dave,List,

my experience are exactly the same , first the CBN blades worked well on
irons, later,(since 3 years?)they don't work anymore because the CBN grit is
not fixed well anymore.

Greetings
Andi

Hi Dave and all,

That is my question too ( do Dia-Laser or Pro Slicer blades work well on
irons?). When the CBN blades first came out they were much better. I use to
cut multipal slices of irons. Something happened to the way they were making
them and your lucky to get through your first slice on the CBN blades now.
My cutting process hasn't changed. I've cut for a short period before
(minute or so) and checked the CBN blade only to find part of the blade
still has cutting material along the edge while other portions of the blade
are completely smooth. So in my experience the CBN blades are no good.

So what do people use for cutting iron slices?

--AL Mitterling

Dear List:

Do either the Dia-Laser or Pro Slicer blades work well on irons? I have used
the CBN blade on irons and they wear out very fast - too fast to be useful.
I am hesitant about using diamond blades on irons.

Anybody have experience cutting irons?

Al,
I was told that Ash Creek was named by Mexico Doug. He recovered the first
specimen at that site and sent it to Dr. Rubin with that as the name.
Nomenclature just approved the name. I have also heard that most people
preferred West. But nobody asked. Is this not true?

Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-07 Thread Ed Deckert

Hi List,

This is my opinion, but I believe it to be correct as it applies to cutting
lapidary rough. Regardless of which brand, and the method of bonding the
diamonds to the blade core (bonded to the blade core by being plated,
sintered, or welded to the core,) one should consider how the blade is being
used before complaining about the short blade life they experience. For
example, dry cutting with a diamond blade that the manufacturer states must
be used with a liquid coolant will typically shorten the useful life of that
blade. The diamonds overheat, crack, and will come off of the blade
prematurely instead of simply wearing down.

If you apply too much pressure when cutting (pushing too hard when feeding
the meteorite manually, or perhaps the autofeed mechanism on the saw is
pushing too fast for the material being cut) - even when using coolant - the
diamonds overheat and come off as when cutting dry, or are simply torn off
by the pressure when feeding the material through the blade too quickly.

And then, different materials will tend to cut faster or slower than others.
How about those blade-killing diamond-bearing Ureillites? When pushing too
hard, or cutting tougher/harder meteorites, two different people using the
same brand and type of blade on the same meteorite can, and will experience
different blade life depending on the material being cut and how quickly
they try to get the job done.

Just my 2 cents.

From:
With sintered blades the diamonds are actually "cooked" in with the
metallic alloys of the blade material, thus impregnating the diamonds
into the rim of the blade. This creates a much longer-life and the
sintering creates a more durable and stiffer metallic alloy.

The non-sintered blades (pro-slicer) are made of basically, sheet-metal,
and the diamonds are sprayed onto the rim. Once the diamonds are
removed, the blade is worthless.

Matt

I cant agree with You.
I use ONLY this "worthless" chinse diamond blades from ebay, this for
4-6$/ blade. I make hundreds slices on each, single blade before I need to
change it becouse the rim with diamonds is basicaly

losses completly into 0! I cant imagine to use any Pro-Slicer for 30-40$
:)
I even used only one blade to cut urelites. Ofcourse , each slice take
30-50min to cut, but ... this blade do it. And my cut looses are very low.

Hello Robert and List,
That is my thoughts exactly Robert, I think we often overlook just what we have
in our collections in the way of a piece of the planet Mars, wow how blessed we

Re: [meteorite-list] OT- color/camera issues

2010-05-07 Thread Michael Blood
Greg,
Most digitals have a "white balance" or a setting for sunlight
(direct or indirect "natural" lighting), incandescent light (lighting
Inside a building - artificial lighting) and an "automatic white balance."
If you don't have this, or get a blue or yellow tint regardless,
then your only option (of which I am aware) is to change the lighting
Circumstances (including the option of a "flash") or to "auto color
Balance" or manually "color balance" in photoshop or other photo
Software.
Best wishes, Michael

Maybe a problem with your color balance.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_balance

Where your camera is set for one type of lighting (florescent, incandescent,
sunlight) and you are actually photograhing under a different type of light.
Different light sources actually produce much different specta of light-- the
human brain is very skilled at adapting to different lighting conditions to look
"right" to you-- CCDs much less so.

This is the image ran through the "automatic color balance" filter in PaintShop
Pro 9, set to the default of 6500K. Does it look more like the actual
meteorite?

Re: [meteorite-list] OT- color/camera issues

2010-05-07 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks
Hi Greg,

The bright white background might be giving your camera problems -
cameras that have automatic image adjustment settings will
overcompensate when confronted with strong reflected light. Try
shooting against a neutral background like grey, light blue, or beige.
Also, try tweaking the saturation in the Photoshop - if the colors
come out with a blue tint, try shifting the tone to a warmer setting.
If the colors come out with a sepia-look to them, try using a cooler
setting. I used to shoot against a white background, but since I
switched to a natural sand background, my photos look a lot better.

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Large Fireball observed on 6MAY2010 in Argentina

2010-05-07 Thread Eduardo
Hi Stuart and list
Written below the photo is that every day there are intrusion of
meteorites like the one of the photo. It does not say that the photo is
from the new fireball. Also mention the source as elpais.es , which is a
newspaper form spain. Now if the neswpaper from Spain had permission to
publish that photo, and if the Tucuman (Argentina) newspaper have
permission to use that content, who knows...
The fireball was real as Dirk said.

Hello Listers,

I think the name of the meteorite should be Livingston because wasnt that the
first place a meteorite was found and the media has been talking about that
town. Plus it seems like that was ground zero the first couple of days when
everyone rushed into WI.

You all know that we gotta call it the Livingston strewn field. In fact we
should start a new nameing process where all meteorites that are from a strewn
field should have a large S after it. Regardless of the name of the rock.

It's one of the more frustrating things about the internet...

Nothing that we ourselves do but what we inherit and have to fixee fixee

Our internet provider's email servers block emails from other internet
provider's email servers where they "think" that server is linked to too
much junk email or spam etc

And then it is a seemingly long and painful and frustrating process to
email the geeks that control the email servers to let our emails through
their gateway and thus to each other yet still block the junk email or
spam !

GRRR !!!

James - do you have a hotmail email account and if so can you use that to
email me at qwal...@hotmail.com

You all know that we gotta call it the Livingston strewn field.  In fact we
should start a new nameing process where all meteorites that are from a strewn
field should have a large S after it.  Regardless of the name of the rock.

I never commented on Chinese blades and do not use them. I am glad they work
for you in some capacity. My comments were directed to Pro-slicer. For a very
similar cost you can have a sintered blade.

I cant agree with You.
I use ONLY this "worthless" chinse diamond blades from ebay, this for 4-6$/
blade. I make hundreds slices on each, single blade before I need to change
it becouse the rim with diamonds is basicaly

losses completly into 0! I cant imagine to use any Pro-Slicer for 30-40$ :)
I even used only one blade to cut urelites. Ofcourse , each slice take
30-50min to cut, but ... this blade do it. And my cut looses are very low.

Interesting. I have a completely different opinion. Personally, I think
Pro-slicer is dramatically sub-par to MK. At least the new MK products. The one
I use is the MK-303.

Hi List,
Have to agree with Mike, I have used a lot of MK Diamond Saber blades and
they are fine but they cost more than Pro Slicer and do not last as long.
Especially since I cut sometimes dry. Pro Slicer blades do not seem to mind
the occasional dry cut as much as other blades. A good price bargain as
well.

With sintered blades the diamonds are actually "cooked" in with the metallic
alloys of the blade material, thus impregnating the diamonds into the rim of
the blade. This creates a much longer-life and the sintering creates a more
durable and stiffer metallic alloy.

The non-sintered blades (pro-slicer) are made of basically, sheet-metal, and
the diamonds are sprayed onto the rim. Once the diamonds are removed, the

Hi All,

When I first bought my saw, I bought 4 blades to try them out. I
bought an off-brand (no-name) Chinese-made diamond blade, a Lapcraft
Dia-laser diamond blade, Meteorite CBN blade, and a super-thin (.006")
Lapcraft Dia-laser. The Chinese-made generic blade cut great at
first, but did not hold up. The CBN blade held up pretty well, but
the cuts were slow and it seemed to struggle even when cutting softer
chondrites. The Dia-Laser .006 was too thin for my pulley and saw, so
I sold it. The Lapcraft blade cuts smoothly, holds up well, and
doesn't rust. I made several hundred cuts with it before it finally
gave out and I bought a new one. The price is about the same for the
Lapcraft and Pro-Slicer blades.

General question - what is the advantage of the sintered blades?

Best regards and happy cutting!

Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-07 Thread mail
I also agree, the CBN blade didn't hold up. I used Pro-slicer as well, and
found them a decent buy for the price, but the best blades in my experience are
the MK sintered blades. Smooth as silk cuts and last about 3x as long as a
pro-slicer, are much more durable and keep a much straighter cut.

I second what Mike said about the "CBN-meteorite blade". I bought
one, used it, and it didn't blow my skirt up. I like the diamond
blades much better. I've never tried a Pro-Slicer, but I'm happy with
the Dia-Laser, so I don't forsee a switch. Although I may try a
Pro-Slicer just to see.

Best regards,

Hi Steve,

I like the Dia-Laser blades by Lapcraft - great blades that last a long time.

Several vendors sell them, but I get mine from Graves Company because
they are located close to me in Florida -

Best regards and happy huntings,

[meteorite-list] AD: Almahata Sitta, Twannberg, North Chile, NWA 5554 & Documentary on HISTORY channel

2010-05-07 Thread Stalder Thomas
Dear list members,

I have a few small but quite rare meteorite fragments and some really nice GEM
quality LDG on E-Bay ending coming Sunday around 11am PDT. Some still at 99
cents. Pls have a look if interested.

http://stores.ebay.com/SAHARAGEMS-DESERT-STONES-and-more?_rdc=1

Further I have a question. A few months ago a film production company asked me
if they could use some pictures I published on flickr.com. The pictures showing
Libyan Desert Glass cut and polished slices (no idea why they choose this ones
:-).

Finally I got a mail yesterday, that my pictures will be shown (I guess for a
few seconds) in a documentary on History Channel on Tuesday, May 18, 8/7c

http://www.history.com/shows/ancient-aliens
Episode 4 - Closer Encounters

Is it possible for somebody here on the list (based in the US) to record this
episode for me on a DVD ? I do not have access to this channel from here in
Switzerland. I will pay for the DVD or offer in exchange one of the newly cut
and polished slices of LDG (one is on Ebay right now). The DVD will be used
only in private (no copying). I know that I can purchase the DVD later from
History Channel but I don't like to wait until it's available.

Pls let me know off list.

Thanks. Wishing all a nice weekend.
