[meteorite-list] Cool Earth photos slideshow!

2010-05-26 Thread Henry Mendoza
Not sure if this will upload. These are some great photos of earth from space.
My workplace blocked the bottom http address because it is streaming video. The
emailjokez.com site had the same slideshow and it worked. Go figure. I have no
idea why it was posted to a joke site but hey, whatever. I think you all will
like it if it works for you.

[meteorite-list] Tomorrow at Bonhams - The Extra-Ordinary Chondrite

2010-05-26 Thread Darryl Pitt

Hi List,

The following is for chondrule lovers.

Tomorrow there is an auction at Bonhams and a VERY special specimen is
included in the mix: one of the four largest complete slices of the
most primitive planetary material (subtype 3.1 or less) known to exist.

At the most recent Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC), the
abstract on NWA 5717 was entitled: The Extra-Ordinary Chondrite:
NWA 5717 for excellent reasons (see below), and the complete slice
offered at Bonhams is of one of the best:

NWA 5717

--It is one of only 17 ordinary chondrites with a subtype less than
3.1(NWA 5717 is sub-type 3.05)
--It is one of only 14 ungrouped chondrites (It's so anomalous,
there is nothing it's anomalous to)

--It's the only CH-UNGR with a subtype less than 3.1
--It's the only known meteorite known to with two distinct 3.05
lithologies---both of which were previously undocumented.

From the press release

NWA 5717 is an extraordinary meteorite, lead researcher and former
NASA scientist Dr. Ted Bunch, declared. Of the more than 40,000
meteorites known to exist, only a handful are as primitive; it is
unchanged since its origins in the early solar nebula. However, what
makes 5717 even more significant is that it's unique: it is from a
previously unknown parent body and contains material never before seen.

To learn more about NWA 5717, go to http://www.macovich.com
To learn more about the specimen offered, go to http://bonhams.com and
type in the SEARCH FIELD in the upper right, type in NWA 5717

Re: [meteorite-list] AD - Super Museum Quality Specimens

2010-05-26 Thread Starsinthedirt
Hi Adam and list,

I have been a fan of iron in lunar meteorites for quite some time. I have
a couple samples where you need a microscope to see the iron but nothing
with a chunk of iron as your Legendary - 1.478 gram part slice with metal of
Lunar meteorite NWA 5000 listing clearly has.

This is a big deal!!!The iron is a meteorite that impacted the moon.
Because there is no atmosphere the impact velocities are high and most
material is vaporized. This is why microscopic bits are the typical find.

I don't know what is documented, but this is the largest iron chunk in a
Lunar meteorite that I have ever heard of.

To who ever grabs this sample, I will (If you trust me with it) offer to
put a 1/4 micron polish on the one side and take some killer incident light
shots of the iron. I will return the polished sample with a CD of the
micrographs. The polish loss would be little as this sample appears to be
flat
and needing no grinding just a diamond slurry on a felt pad.

[meteorite-list] Tomorrow at Bonhams: NWA 5717 - The Extra-Ordinary Chondrite

Hi List,

Let me assure you that NWA 5717 is not only a must have for chondrule lovers
but also an absolute must have for any avid meteorite and thin section
collector.
When I received my specimen + thin section some months ago, I was almost carried
away and there were lots of oohs and aahs when I first beheld my thin
section in
cross-polarized light. Some of my pictures can be found in the online
Encyclopedia of
Meteorites!

NWA 5717 is so unique that one of the lead researchers wrote about it the
following:

... this is one of the most significant chondrites to come along in some time
...

The two equally primitive 3.05 lithologies are a feast for the eyes and my
thin section
is rich in large BO chondrules. There are also both porphyritic chondrules and
pyroxene
chondrules - the latter displaying undulose extinction. Chondrules are crisp
and chondrule
boundaries are sharply delineated.

In my thin section I also detected a 1.625 x 1.375 mm BO chondrule with
extremely strongly
zoned chondrule olivine. A large, dark cryptocrystalline chondrule (2.5 x 2.5
mm) does not
only display undulose extinction but is moreover composed of several
differently oriented
single components (polysomatic).

NWA 5717 is undoubtedly one of my absolute collection hightlights!

RELEASE: 10-122

NASA SPACECRAFT PENETRATES MYSTERIES OF MARTIAN ICE CAP

PASADENA, Calif. -- Data from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)
have helped scientists solve a pair of mysteries dating back four
decades and provided new information about climate change on the Red
Planet.

The Shallow Radar, or SHARAD, instrument aboard MRO revealed
subsurface geology allowing scientists to reconstruct the formation
of a large chasm and a series of spiral troughs on the northern ice
cap of Mars. The findings appear in two papers in the May 27 issue of
the journal Nature.

SHARAD is giving us a beautifully detailed view of ice deposits,
whether at the poles or buried in mid-latitudes, as they changed on
Mars over the last few million years, said Rich Zurek, MRO project
scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

On Earth, large ice sheets are shaped mainly by ice flow. According to
this latest research, other forces have shaped, and continue to
shape, polar ice caps on Mars. The northern ice cap is a stack of ice
and dust layers up to two miles deep, covering an area slightly
larger than Texas. Analyzing radar data on a computer, scientists can
peel back the layers like an onion to reveal how the ice cap evolved
over time.

One of the most distinctive features of the northern ice cap is Chasma
Boreale, a canyon about as long as Earth's Grand Canyon but deeper
and wider. Some scientists believe Chasma Boreale was created when
volcanic heat melted the bottom of the ice sheet and triggered a
catastrophic flood. Others suggest strong polar winds carved the
canyon out of a dome of ice.

Other enigmatic features of the ice cap are troughs that spiral
outward from the center like a gigantic pinwheel. Since the troughs
were discovered in 1972, scientists have proposed several hypotheses
about how they formed. Perhaps as Mars spins, ice closer to the poles
moves slower than ice farther away, causing the semi-fluid ice to
crack. Perhaps, as one mathematical model suggests, increased solar
heating in certain areas and lateral heat conduction could cause the
troughs to assemble.

Data from Mars now points to both the canyon and spiral troughs being
created and shaped primarily by wind. Rather than being cut into
existing ice very recently, the features formed over millions of
years as the ice sheet grew. By influencing wind patterns, the shape
of underlying, older ice controlled where and how the features grew.

Nobody realized that there would be such complex structures in the
layers, said Jack Holt, of the University of Texas at Austin's
Institute for Geophysics. Holt is the lead author of the paper
focusing on Chasma Boreale. The layers record a history of ice
accumulation, erosion and wind transport. From that, we can recover a
history of climate that's much more detailed than anybody expected.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter was launched on Aug. 12, 2005. SHARAD
and the spacecraft's five other instruments began science operations
in November 2006.

These anomalous features have gone unexplained for 40 years because
we have not been able to see what lies beneath the surface, said
Roberto Seu, SHARAD team leader at the University of Rome. It is
gratifying to me that with this new instrument we can finally explain
them.

The MRO mission is managed by JPL for the Mars Exploration Program at
NASA's Headquarters in Washington. SHARAD was provided by the Italian
Space Agency, and its operations are led by the InfoCom Department,
University of Rome.

Re: [meteorite-list] Anyone know who this dealer is?

2010-05-26 Thread Warren Sansoucie

I agree. This dealer is selling another wrong for over $100.00 on another
auction. I'm sure Dr. Korotev and the good folks at Cascadia would like to see
how he is trying to use their websites to sell crap.

I think it's completely misleading . It's worded so as to not claim it's real
yet works hard to convince you that it is. I don't like stuff like this.
Someone's about to drop over $100 on their first meteorite. Weak.

Hi Warren, list,
I just had a look at this guy's three listing and I found that one of the
photos he used is the same in these two listings.

item 130393638542
item 130393639465

It might have happened accidently but after reading the descriptions I have
my doubts.

[meteorite-list] Micrograph gallery post Lunar crust and Lodranite

2010-05-26 Thread Starsinthedirt
Hi List, Paul (Meteorite Times) has worked his magic and set up two new
articles on my meteorite micrograph gallery.

The first is NWA 6075 Lodranite found at

http://www.meteorite.com/meteorite-gallery/articles/nwa-6075/

The second is a set of very high magnification images of a Lunar crust on
NWA 2977. There really are crystals in this crust! It can be found at

http://www.meteorite.com/meteorite-gallery/articles/nwa-2977/

I previously posted some of these shots on Face Book and some of you may
have seen them but many more have been posted in my gallery.

Please take a look and comments are appreciated!

[meteorite-list] Inside a fireball!

2010-05-26 Thread Linton Rohr

Wow. This would be quite an experience!

http://www.universetoday.com/2010/05/26/atlantis-crew-riding-inside-a-fireball/
 At a post-landing news conference, STS-132 commander
Ken Ham described the incredible visual effects the crew of Atlantis witnessed as they returnedto
Earth today. As the shuttle was engulfed in plasma during the hottest part of their re-entry
through Earth's atmosphere, they were in orbitaldarkness, which highlighted the orange, fiery glow
around the shuttle. We were clearly riding inside of a fireball, and we flew right into the
sunrisefrom inside this fireball, so we could see the blue color of the Earth's horizon coming
through the orange. It was amazing and just visually overwhelming. As evidence, ISS astronaut
Soichi Noguchi captured Atlantis as that fireball, streaking though atmosphere, just as dawn
approached. Dawn, and Space Shuttle re-entered atmosphere over Pacific Ocean. 32 years
ofservice, 32nd beautiful landing. Forever, Atlantis! No

Re: [meteorite-list] More Photos of the Strange NWA stones

2010-05-26 Thread countdeiro
Hello Greg..List,

Does Number 8 look like a Vigarano to anyone else? Hard to see that cut face,
but it looks like a C and those could be a few CAI's.
Number 3 still looks like... just maybe.. a planetary. I know there's not
enough visible to make any sense, but it's fun to speculate.
Thanks, Greg for sharing... and if you're paying for sections you must suspect
something. Do let us know.
