Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition
I never saw the movie, but there are plenty of historical references to cannoneers using scrap of all kinds (metal, glass, rocks, gravel, lengths of chain, etc.). The common "commercially-made" equivalent ammunition was grapeshot and canister rounds. Getting hit with grapeshot or a canister round would definitely make your eyes water. Cartersville fell over a year ago. And it's been over 6 months since Lorton. I understand that Lorton is tied up legally, so it's not available for analysis. It's been 3 months since Wisconsin and there is material in the hands of those who can classify it. I admit that I am inexperienced with the classification part of meteorites, but how long does it take to make a thin section and then look at it? I would think that the scientists would be more eager than I to know the types, so I would imagine that it's not the scientist's fault if the classification is slow. In the case of Lorton, it's obviously legal red tape. But what about Cartersville, Kosice and Wisconsin? I just think it's a bit weird and inconsistent - we saw a classification for Ash Creek within a week of the fall. So, apparently Ash Creek was deemed important enough for an expedited classification. Why is Wisconsin and others so different? Or, what was different about Ash Creek? I'm a patient guy, but I am also a curious one and I'd wondering why some falls get classified quick and others languish for years. You'd have to paint him to match the desert sands - or he would end up as bowl of turtle soup in some nomad's tent. ;) On a more serious, sneaky and illegal note - I wonder if anyone has put magnets in their shoes and then took a walk around Meteor Crater? I can picture some sneak going back to his car, taking his shoes off, removing the magnets, and then shale, spheroids and fragments fall off the bottom of the shoes. Not that I would condone that, but I bet it would work. Re: [meteorite-list] Slow Classifications
Perhaps all of us in the field should schedule a "field-trip-assembly" to the labs. After all, what NWA # are they working on now, 7000? We will and should wait. And along with Greg, don't we all want solid solid solid classification? Otherwise it will become a mess (perhaps may already be, considering, for example, the pending pairing impatient 5400 science) if the very precise anaysis is compromised. Re: [meteorite-list] Slow Classifications
Hi Greg, It's not instant gratification I want, I am just curious about these falls and want to know more about them. Best regards, MikeG PS - maybe that Galapagos turtle is doing the classifications. ;) On 7/27/10, Greg Hupe wrote: > I do not understand the impatience these days...let the scientists perform > their work without the instant gratification a few individuals want. > > > - Original Message - > From: "Mike Miller" > To: "Galactic Stone & Ironworks" > Cc: "Meteorite List" > Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 10:45 PM > Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Slow Classifications > > > Ok I agree what is the hold up? Hello List Members, I really don't do this very often, but... One of my customers has asked me to sell quickly the large end-piece of Zacatecas (1969) that he had bought from Al Lang years ago. Here is a picture: _http://www.impactika.com/catpix/FS007.jpg_ (http://www.impactika.com/catpix/FS007.jpg) I see Zacatecas listed on the Net for $4/gram, but, because he is looking for a quick sale, my customer is only asking $1/gram. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition
Not sure about reality, but there's and awesome "Outer Limits" where a meteorite lands in either Japan or China and they make ammunition (bullets) out of the iron and... you guessed it... four solders get shot, and get taken over by aliens that were within (inside) the meteorite (unsure if this is how they traveled or what) and these four individuals did amazing feats (through mind control) and built a spaceship to take some humans to their alien world. It's a really good episode if you like that kind of show - it was first aired on the original Outer Limits and also redone on the 1990's Outer Limits. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition
Remaining indoors is only one solution, Count. As I learned in school long time ago, the appropriate reaction in the case of ABC-attack while walking outdoors is: jumping into the next roadside ditch and protecting your head with the schoolbag. Well, that would do in the case of an alien-meteoritical attack as well I guess. In that special situation carrying a dip net with you would be fine :-) Best, Matthias - Original Message - From: To: Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 10:33 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition Attention List! All of these variables create infinite combinations. I once heard how the string theory didnt explain how small particles bounced around while large ones floated smoothly by. Catching some sun on the beach at Galveston I observed large freightors floating smoothly by while small beach balls bounced up and down in the waves. The whole universe is made of fractyls. G'day Carl, Yes this is 100% melt material. By that I mean there is no main meteorite piece that the others are attached to... just dozens of fragments held together by fusion crust. VERY unusual stuff which I believe was dubbed "Ralewite" in the past after Stefan Ralew who first bought it to our attention.
