It's actually "cark it" and you are right, it's an Aussie/New Zealand slang

Bob Walker of Brisbane, Queensland,
Australia, veteran of the Royal Australian Military Forces, a true mate

in

hospital October 2nd. last.

Bob had been in daily communication for months
with several of us on List and had busied himself, even after learning of
his
terminal diagnosis, with his obsession with thin sections, sending DVDs
and

posters to everyone who would have them and asking for new samples to
incorporate in his work. He had already arranged to donate most of his
collection of Australian meteorites to local institutions and museums.
Just
recently having the pleasure of assisting at an installation of his
favorite

pieces for public view in Queensland.

To the end he was upbeat though he
knew he was dying and showed more concern for the health of his friends
who
also have cancer, writing daily and sharing encounters with the "white
coats"

and trusting that they would "fixee fixee" everyone.

You know the answer

I just checked my email and saw that Bob has passed. I know that Bob
was liked by many and also disliked by some. But we are all brothers

He had a keen mind and a sharp wit. Though I only knew him a short

will miss him and this is another bad piece of news in what is shaping
up to be a crummy October.

Re: [meteorite-list] Professionals No Longer Sought

2010-10-09 Thread cdtucson
Dave,
This is an interesting word "professional." Basically it does not mean much
more than getting paid to do something.
I prefer the term professionalism. Professionalism includes the conduct of
what a professional does.
Not only do they get paid but, they conduct themselves in a certain way
including a long list of things;
Respect for others is an important ism. Bad mouthing your competition is one of
the un's in the ism.
Ethics and Morals play a role in the isms as well.
Trust and honor play a huge role as well.
Having good business sense is key.
Playing by the rules is important.
Basic Business Knowledge can be huge.
Knowledge in general also plays a huge role.
In this Biz a basic Scientific and geology education is a great aid towards
achieving the highest level of professionalism.
Each of these areas can be broken down and defined but basically there are
various degrees of professionals and ism based on these factors and a few more
I may have missed here whether you get paid or not.
To tackle your question about authenticity is a tough nut.
Even Earth minerals require a certain amount of testing or opinion to verify
authenticity but, meteorite identification is far more difficult because it's
not quite as aesthetically driven as the mineral biz. As an example. A perfect
diamond is flawless. Not so with a perfect meteorite. To me the perfect
meteorite is the one in my possession. ha ha.
Most dealers can identify most of the chondrites in general with a visual
inspection. Beyond that the sky is the limit. Pun intended.
Yes, there are many rules of thumb about meteorites but I cannot think of a
single rule that cannot at some point become an exception to the rule.
By that I mean if somebody came up with a rule book of meteorites there will
always be rule breakers. So, we are involved in an industry that relies heavily
on our Scientific counter parts.
We not only rely on them we depend on them. For without a Scientists name on a
piece of paper describing it , you have either a rock or a unclassified
meteorite. Either one is almost worthless.
To me it is this aspect in our Biz that is the most lacking. Sure we have great
Scientists just not enough of them. Especially when it comes to Achondrites and
odd irons such as Lovina. Many of these even the true Science professionals
cannot agree on at first.
Which brings us to the word "Legal" definition? This seems to be a bit of a
gray area.
Sure we can Google the word but there is no such thing as a *legal* meteorite.
Not really.
Most collectible objects can be certified as authentic. This adds confidence
which converts to trust.
With meteorites the only certification we have is in the name. Met soc
certifies only the name. The rest is assumed accurate but not "legally"
certified by anybody.
I would like to know why this is but, as this was explained by Jeff Grossman as
the case but not why.
I think this is why eBay allows these crackpots to sell there rocks because
nobody can prove them wrong through a listing alone. They may well be selling a
true Lunar. Who knows unless it gets studied. Many of them even present their
own testing results. I mean who could argue with that?
To me the ultimate professional guarantees what they sell with a money back
guarantee. Period.
We are in a tough biz.
My 2 more cents.

Plants ( particular varieties of Orchids, Hoyas etc.). Damn, I am going
To miss him terribly.

I will be creating a memorial page for Bob and will let you all
know when it is up.

Life is "too short" for those we love, eh?

Peace be with Bob and with you all, Michael

That's a good sentence, Guido.

Dear List,

If this has been posted...I apologize for repeating sad news. I have not
seen it mentioned.

Bob Walker of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, veteran of the Royal
Australian Military Forces, a true mate and associate in the love of all
that has to do with meteorites, passed away in hospital October 2nd. last.

Bob had been in daily communication for months with several of us on List
and had busied himself, even after learning of his terminal diagnosis,
with his obsession with thin sections, sending DVDs and posters to
everyone who would have them and asking for new samples to incorporate in
his work. He had already arranged to donate most of his collection of
Australian meteorites to local institutions and museums. Just recently
having the pleasure of assisting at an installation of his favorite pieces
for public view in Queensland.

To the end he was upbeat though he knew he was dying and showed more
concern for the health of his friends who also have cancer, writing daily
and sharing encounters with the "white coats" and trusting that they would
"fixee fixee" everyone.

You know the answer now...Bob. I hope it's that you have crossed the event
horizon and are in the presence of all that is beautiful.

[meteorite-list] Passing of Bob Walker

2010-10-09 Thread Count Deiro
Dear List,

If this has been posted...I apologize for repeating sad news. I have not seen
it mentioned.

Bob Walker of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, veteran of the Royal Australian
Military Forces, a true mate and associate in the love of all that has to do
with meteorites, passed away in hospital October 2nd. last.

Bob had been in daily communication for months with several of us on List and
had busied himself, even after learning of his terminal diagnosis, with his
obsession with thin sections, sending DVDs and posters to everyone who would
have them and asking for new samples to incorporate in his work. He had already
arranged to donate most of his collection of Australian meteorites to local
institutions and museums. Just recently having the pleasure of assisting at an
installation of his favorite pieces for public view in Queensland.

To the end he was upbeat though he knew he was dying and showed more concern
for the health of his friends who also have cancer, writing daily and sharing
encounters with the "white coats" and trusting that they would "fixee fixee"
everyone.

You know the answer now...Bob. I hope it's that you have crossed the event
horizon and are in the presence of all that is beautiful.

RIP

Guido

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Mars Odyssey THEMIS Images: October 4-8, 2010

The term" rift valley/rift" is somewhat subjective as a rift proper is
normally
associated with plate movement but this example in not from the "tectonic
plate
movement" we are familiar with on earth. This valley resulted from a
"tectonic
process". Specifically a branch of tectonic study called
thrust/contraction

tectonics

The feature is a graben . A graben
is type
of fault feature where contraction( vs compression) pulls perpendicular to
to

the linear features and a block of landscape drops in relation to the
surrounding. On each side of the graben will be steep sloped escarpments.
A
horst is the highland between two grabens that remained at the same
elevation of

may have been up-thrusted.

In the example you posted the movement was a few inches/feet left and
right of
the escarpments( parallel lines) as well as a downward movement of the
valley
floor a distance I am unable to determine from the photo but could have
been
tens to hundreds of feet. This is not a slip strike fault where the
opposite

sides are displaced laterally.

I've read recently about contraction of the lunar crust owing to overall
cooling producing these features. On a lunar-wide basis when the formerly
liquid mantle transitioned to a solid the sum total of all the nanometer
sized

compression of the space between molecules is seen on the surface as these
grabens. The link above shows a substantial graben on the moon.

To read about recent graben formation on earth you might google the
1811-1812
New Madrid Earthquare
or
and the formation of the ReelFoot lake in western Tennessee. That area
lies on a
failed rift where North America almost split. I think the Reelfoot Lake
basin
came from a graben drop of only about 6 ft but left a lake of 30 square
miles

and about 3 ft /1meter deep.

A little geologic help please.
In the image "Alba Mons Tectonics" could someone elucidate and elaborate
on

the tectonic features shown.
Are we looking at a rift at one or both parallel "lines" depicted and if
so:

are the lines related
what is the direction of the movement
what specific features demonstrate this movement
any other features which demonstrate tectonic activity that I'm not
seeing

Thanks to any respondents in advance

Hello Listers,

I have some great historic meteorites ending soon on eBay. If you have been
looking for that high end meteorites, look no further. I have meteorites from
the 1400's all the way up to 2008, all with a great pasts. If your looking for
the first dated fall from 1492, or the great Hoax meteorite, which is also one
of the rarest meteorites, or the horse killer, I have it. But that's not all, I
have many world class meteorites to offer with world class stories. I was once
told that a meteorite with a history will always at the end of the day keep its
value for future generations to come. A meteorite is a meteorite, but a
meteorite with historic history and a legacy, will always add aura to your
meteorite collection and value. Please take a look and if you have any
questions please contact me and ill get back to you.

Re: [meteorite-list] Mars Odyssey THEMIS Images: October 4-8, 2010

2010-10-09 Thread MEM
The term" rift valley/rift" is somewhat subjective as a rift proper is normally
associated with plate movement but this example in not from the "tectonic plate
movement" we are familiar with on earth. This valley resulted from a "tectonic
process". Specifically a branch of tectonic study called thrust/contraction
tectonics

The feature is a graben . A graben is
type
of fault feature where contraction( vs compression) pulls perpendicular to to
the linear features and a block of landscape drops in relation to the
surrounding. On each side of the graben will be steep sloped escarpments. A
horst is the highland between two grabens that remained at the same elevation
of
may have been up-thrusted.

In the example you posted the movement was a few inches/feet left and right of
the escarpments( parallel lines) as well as a downward movement of the valley
floor a distance I am unable to determine from the photo but could have been
tens to hundreds of feet. This is not a slip strike fault where the opposite
sides are displaced laterally.

I've read recently about contraction of the lunar crust owing to overall
cooling producing these features. On a lunar-wide basis when the formerly
liquid mantle transitioned to a solid the sum total of all the nanometer sized
compression of the space between molecules is seen on the surface as these
grabens. The link above shows a substantial graben on the moon.

To read about recent graben formation on earth you might google the 1811-1812
New Madrid Earthquare or
and the formation of the ReelFoot lake in western Tennessee. That area lies on
a
failed rift where North America almost split. I think the Reelfoot Lake basin
came from a graben drop of only about 6 ft but left a lake of 30 square miles
and about 3 ft /1meter deep.

Re: [meteorite-list] Professionals No Longer Sought

2010-10-09 Thread e-mail ensoramanda
Hi Dave,

I am not really sure what you are getting at when talking of
check-lists of attributes defining professionals and scientists having
to address questions by the general public/collector? I cannot see how
the first would help anyone or how the second could ever be practical.

What it comes down to is having confidence in who you buy from or deal
with and trying to learn as much about the samples you wish to
collect.

There are very few options for the collector. In an ideal world it
would be great to have your own equipment to verify what you get or
have your own science contacts that could do that but that just isn't
going to happen. There is not enough time and very little point in
retesting small samples for individuals...it's just a waste of
resources and not productive.

Science benefits from new material being submitted by dealers and
dealers then benefit from material being verified and classified.
After that point you just have to choose dealers who have a good
reputation that are selling that classified material with provenance.
Otherwise there is no real substitute for having years of experience
studying, looking at hundreds of samples of all types in collections,
at shows, in books, online etc etc when it comes to choosing your
purchases.

It also depends on what your focus is when collecting meteorites..and
there are many different collectorssome concentrate on micros,
others planetary, types, aesthetic qualities etc etc. Science is
important in some more than others. I, for instance, like nothing
better than searching through a box of UNWA material at a show looking
for something aesthetically pleasing, showing flight markings or an
unusual shape or matrixsomething that may tell a story about it's
flight through the atmosphereevidence of impact craters on sikhote
alins.( I have even managed this by studying batches for sale on line)
Knowing what to buy then just relies on your own experience.

Regards,

Graham

David said in part, " That is not to say...I would want to subscribeto its
tenets of extreme trust...that its membership appears to crow about in place of
solid verifiable scientific mineralogical evidence..."

I think we move to far afield in our expectations of what the members of IMCA
have agreed to vis a vis statements of classification and provenance of
meteorites in sales and trades.. Members of IMCA have agreed publicly to not
engage in dishonesty in the dealing of meteorites. This goes to the guarantees
of classification and provenance ONLY to the extent that the IMCA member is
aware of the validity of those data.

IMCA members hold the banner of membership up to tell those who deal with them
that they can expect fairness and truth when dealing with them. If IMCA is an
enforcer of anything, it is that the elected Board of Directors can deny an
application for membership, or excommunicate, or punish for cause, a member who
has been found to not be honest and fair in their dealings.

Dear Dave-- were I inclined I could go back in the list archives and fine 20 or

throwing around all types of ill-formed demands, or egotistical proclamations

What made you specify that "dealers" were all you sought--was below the noise
level to bother with. And why now complain that the rest of the list didn't
answer you--Are you under the misconception the this is a list mainly of
dealers? I don't know which dealers who responded but how do you know they
were "professional" dealers? Getting more than 1 person offering to do
business
based on your original post is quiet successful.

So get a clue--if you want assistance on specific questions just ask. We were
all novices once and if you don't come in here ranting like you are owed our
undivided attention and just ask your specific question you might get what you
need-- if not what you want. (Pray tell what are other "celestial objects

Let me take this opportunity to remind you that if you don't like the way we do

you in the tushie on your way out...

Re: [meteorite-list] Professionals No Longer Sought

2010-10-09 Thread David Gunning

Hi Graham UK,

The last time I looked there was no check-list of attributes defining
what it means to be a "professional" meteorite dealer.

The more I learn about the IMCA, and how it presents itself as a quasi
enforcer of honest meteorite dealings between it's membership and the
meteorite collecting community, at large, the more I like what I see.

That is not to say, however, that I would want to subscribe to it's
tenets of extreme trust that it's membership, you included, appears to
crow about in place of solid verifiable scientific mineralogical evidence
when purchasing meteorites, where and whenever possible.

One of the difficulties, seems to me, is that the scientists, generally
speaking, are too deeply insulated from having to address the questions
and concerns of us mere ordinary mortals, non IMCA members.
Professionalism, at it's best, means addressing those devilish details
that don't always quite square-up, in my view. Science, at it's best,
should be verifiable and evidence based for even us ordinary mere
mortals, don't you suppose?

Verifiably yours,

Dave Gunning
