Well, I always learn something new from this group!
No wonder this situation smells bad.

But wait, there's more! It is not just Lunar meteorites that this
wing-nut (as in Russel T Wing) claims to have found, but also
a plethora of Martian meteorites!

Here are some of these rare finds:
http://tinyurl.com/2753g7t

I wonder what the next 'meteorism' will be?
Perhaps a living Lunar or Martian 'spidy' inside the 'meteorite'?
Sound familiar?

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Steven Curry, a meteorite researcher who lives
southeast of Montrose, claims to have found the first lunar meteorites in
North America. But it's what's inside these meteorites that he says will
change life as we know it.

Curry has research sites all over the country but he's found lunar rocks
right here on the Western Slope. He says he's made some life changing
 discoveries.

We've all thought about the existence of life on other planets, now curry
believes he has the evidence to back it up.

After magnifying the images, he says he's found outlines of crustaceans,
snails and sea worms inside his meteors.

I have in my hands something astrobiologists and astrophysicists have
been looking for for a long time, and that's the existence of
 extraterrestrial life, says Curry.

He's only been searching for meteors for about a year and a half, but
says he's already accumulated over 100 of them.

If you want to check out his meteorites for yourself, Curry will be at
the Montrose Library on November 8th, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm displaying his
 work.

He's planning on showing a slideshow and providing other fun events to

Los Alamos Hermit Booted Off Lab Property Spreads His Theories of the Cosmos

By Adam Rankin
Journal Staff Writer
LOS ALAMOS— Roy Michael Moore, aka the Los Alamos caveman, dropped out
 of
the mainstream almost a decade ago, and though he has been largely ignored
for
the four years he's peddled his cosmological theories here, he is a long way
from giving up on making the sale.
Discovered living in a cave on Oct. 13 in a deep canyon on U.S.
 Department
of Energy property at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the 56-year-old Moore
is
finally gaining the attention he's been seeking for years. Someone from
Albuquerque wants to film a documentary about him and a brief story about his
discovery appeared on Wired magazine online.
A Vietnam veteran who spent four years playing clarinet in a Marine Corps
band in the late 1960s, Moore is hoping to shift the focus from himself and
his
cave dwelling to his life's work.
I would sacrifice everything I own to get my story out, he said.
It was in 1996 that the former computer programmer and network manager
 sold
all his possessions, abandoned his Amarillo, Texas, computer business and
devoted all his energy to thinking deep thoughts.
I served my time until my kids left home. When they left, I felt I had
 no
more responsibilities, he said. Moore divorced when his oldest daughter, now
26, was 8 years-old and his son was about 6.
I didn't know a thing about business or making money, even though his
company employed 25 at one time and he used to bill $100 an hour for
programing
the computers he built and sold, he said.
Dissatisfied with computers, Moore said he felt he had bigger, more
important problems to work on.
So, the father of two, who calls himself Micro Mike because the
 nickname
puts him in the context of the broader universe, started walking and thinking.
Normal life is a rat race, and as far as I can tell, the rats are
winning, he said. Besides, he said, I never tried to be normal in my  life;
it
is just another word for average to me and I want to be above average.
At first, he walked around Amarillo, thinking about the cosmos, working
through Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. Then, he headed to Socorro,
where he sought out sky watchers at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory,
hoping he could discuss the newly developed theory he dubbed the gravionic
model.
The theory ascribes energy and spirituality to gravity— the
action-at-a-distance phenomenon that modern science has a hard time fully
explaining.
They said they didn't have a single cosmologist on staff, Moore said,
still clearly disappointed.
No takers there, he next traveled to Roswell, where for a short stint he
gave talks on a what he claims is a bowling ball-size Martian meteorite he
found while working as a cowboy on his great-aunt's ranch in northern Texas
in
1971.
In Roswell, Moore met Lee Weinland, an independent video producer from
 Los
Alamos who was intrigued by Moore and his story about the meteorite and his
claims that it held evidence of complex life on Mars.
I never have been able to get any scientists to do any tests on it,
 Moore
said.
Weinland, who describes Moore as an eccentric genius, invited Moore to
Los Alamos where the two cooperated to produce a short video on the meteorite
and Moore's theories on its Martian origin. That's when Moore fell in love
with
Los Alamos, according to Weinland.
He fits up here in a lot of ways, Weinland said of Moore. I believe
 Los
Alamos is a town full of very common sense-challenged people and Micro Mike
is
one of them; very brilliant, but common sense challenged... he is no whackier
than most of the physicists I know up here.
So now Moore walks around Los Alamos and the Jemez Mountains. According
 to
his figuring, he has logged more than 8,000 miles just walking and thinking.
Most of my life, I was afraid to be alone, Moore said. But when I
started working on my gravionic model, I had to be alone.
Moore, who says he has many friends in Los Alamos who help him with food
and clothes, gauges the difficulty of the problems he tackles by how far he
walks before solving them— a process he says is aided by smoking marijuana.
When Moore was discovered living in his cave, federal authorities also
found 10 marijuana plants, each about 18 inches tall growing around the cave.
I think the laws that prohibit (marijuana) are unconstitutional,
 because
they infringe on his pursuit of happiness, Moore said. I should be allowed
to
use it to solve problems that help humanity, rather than be punished for it.
Los Alamos, with its thick population of Ph.D.s working at the weapons
laboratory, is a highly spiritual community and its great trail network is
the
perfect place for me,

Hi Adam and All,

... Discovered living in a cave on Oct. 13 in a deep canyon ...

With his supplies gone, Barber's condition is next to hopeless, when he
discovers
a cave at the top of a cliff. To his surprise he finds the interior fully
equipped;
in the bed there lies a dead man. He adopts the dead man's identity and lives
in the
cave. A period of deep happiness and extraordinary artistic productivity begins.

He is soon visited by an Indian, George Ugly Mouth, who takes him for the dead
man. He finds out that the dead man had been involved with a gang of outlaws,
the Gresham brothers, whose return is only a matter of time. When they do
finally
come, Barber kills them in cold blood.

In their saddle bags he finds a large amount of money. He leaves the cave and
begins
a new life as Thomas Effing in San Francisco; by investing the money wisely he
soon
becomes very rich. He leads a life of luxury, yet cannot enjoy it for fear of
having
his identity revealed by someone from the past.

Feelings of guilt become so strong that he seeks oblivion in opium, women and
gambling.

 Perhaps

[meteorite-list] A Signed and Numbered Copy of The Art of Collecting Meteorites - (ad)

2010-10-31 Thread Kevin Kichinka
In a short time, someone hopefully will be interested in bidding and
purchasing a First Edition copy (signed and numbered #498 of 500) of
my book, The Art of Collecting Meteorites.

I am thankful to Geoff Notkin for taking time out this week to
retrieve the original book file and mailing a CD to me so I can
pursue printing more copies when the last few I have soon sell out.
Without his search, the book was forever lost.

Imagine what help I had with this project! . Meteorite Man Geoff did
the book's design, Meteorite Man Steve Arnold played a key role in
its concept. Richard Norton wrote the foreword. Joel Schiff edited.
Darryl Pitt inspired and shared his knowledge and photos. Tom Phillips
donated images of his micro-work including the stunning cover. Others
on this message board were key contributors.

I will sign copy #499 for an eBay auction in a few months. I'll leave
#500, the last to be signed and numbered, to be sold when all other
copies are gone.

It is still unclear if there will ever be more copies available or if
the book will go out of print.

But today, if anyone would enjoy having what some people consider
special, please take a look at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=220689112129ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

Many thanks to all for your support and encouragement. Special thanks
to those who have recently purchased second copies as a permanent
collectable.

My response to him:...
Not sure why you chose me to threaten but I only call them as I see them. I
have only been collecting meteorites for a couple years now and from the
pictures I see of what you are pushing as a possible impossible find look
nothing like any meteorite I nor any others from the scientist community

7 legs instead of 8 therefor it must be extraterrestrial. I noticed his

2010-10-31 Thread Mark Grossman

Hi,

Here's an interesting piece of information I learned which raises the
question as to who prepared the first published meteorite catalogue. You

can see the posting at:

[meteorite-list] Fw: Who prepared the first published meteoritecatalogue?

2010-10-31 Thread Mark Grossman

Hi Chris,

Forgot to mention, regardless of how modern collectors arrange or spell what
they do!

So what do you think? Has Lucas taken away the title from von Schreibers
for being the first?

English spelling is catalogue and American spelling is catalog. I guess
I've written too many articles that were reviewed by British editors to
keep things straight in my mind!

Re: [meteorite-list] Just Got Threatened by Steven Curry!!

2010-10-31 Thread Ken Newton
Well I got an email too.

Mr. Curry is reading our texts. Thus, he should know that we all spend
a great deal of time helping others with meteorite identification and
trying to make this hobby better. We are not paid to assist and have
no vested interests in protecting lunar or martian meteorite
collection values. How so? One cannot protect values because the
amount/rarity of each fall is unique to itself. For example, If a huge
amount of a fall was discover and sold, its price would be determined
by market supply and demand. For example, NWA 869 would have been much
more costly had there not been so much of it! And too the owner(s) of
the fall can control the price by releasing the amount(s) to the
market but he/they is/are the only one(s).

Testing facilities and university professors do not attempt to control
the market. The truth of the matter is they have been so eager to
discover new finds, in the past they have tested for free. Testing in
itself is an expensive undertaking because only one in a thousand
samples sent in results in being meteoritic. With the popularity of
Meteorite Men, the ratio has probably doubled or tripled and thus many
universities have completely stopped testing due to a lack of funding
in these lean times.

Hopeful persons may get mad when a sample is returned and told it is
not a meteorite. We as collectors get upset when persons ignore the
experts and repetitively clog the system with wrongs. Perhaps setting
back real classification work and limited budgets from months to
years.

Here is my suggestion to you, SC. Let other meteorite experts verify
and classify your best suspect meteorite. If your meteorite claim
cannot be independently verified it will never be recognized as
genuine, never. There will always be a shadow over it. There is no
conspiracy. If you have a meteorite, it can be independently verified
overseas if you wish. But you must face facts too. If it is not a
meteorite, accept that fact without false excuses. It if is an
independently verified and classified meteorite then you can attempt
to prove it has fossils, just let your steps be transparent so you can
announce to the world without the suspect meteorite accusation.

You have a whole list of meteorite dealers and collectors including
Lunar and Martian experts that would be probably be willing to answer
questions for you, one question at a time and one suspect meteorite at
a time. Depending on your humility, all you have to do is ask (not
demand, not argue).

Remember that all the photos and web sites that persons use to try to
self classify their found rocks were put there by the same experts
that are instantly viewed as non-experts or dishonest when their
suspect meteorite is reported to be or is dismissed as a wrong. It
can't be both ways!

Best,
Ken Newton

Mr. Curry has sent me the very same thinly disguised threat. Same language.
He must be getting tired of pressing the send key. I elected not to respond
as that is probably what he wants. Delusional persons live through the
contention they can get others to participate in. They don't give a damn what
you say. It's all about what they get to say. And it will go on amd on.

I have unfortunately had previous encounters with two personalities like
this. Both situations came about because of my business activities
inadvertantly bringing me to their attention. It became grim in both cases.
In the end, they both committed suicide by violent means. I'll provide their
names and the details of what finally got them to kill themselves off list
 for those interested.

Guys he is obviously monitoring this list or the Space Rocks forum on CN
because I just got a slander/libel threat from him. I have copied his email
to me and my reply to him. He also attached a WORD document which I have
also copied, not sure what it means.

My response to him:...
Not sure why you chose me to threaten but I only call them as I see them. I
have only been collecting meteorites for a couple years now and from the
pictures I see of what you are pushing as a possible impossible find look
nothing like any meteorite I nor any others from the scientist community
have ever seem.   I am not getting into any pissing contest with you because
I claim to be no expert from any stretch of the imagination, so I suggest
you lose my email address, and let me exercise MY 1st Amendment rights!

Please do not contact me again.

Hello Ingo and meteorite friends,
from my collection of unclassified NWAs I've cut another one. Its a small one.
The complete surface has a molten structure as you can see on the picture . At
first cristalized peridotite (appr. 1500°C), than iron (appr.1600°C) and last
pyroxene (appr.1800°C)

Probably. I really would like to know if the collector of today keeps
a printable listing as did the historical collectors. Mine runs

[meteorite-list] AD: Worried about meteorite storage? I've got boxes galore!

2010-10-31 Thread Rob Holcomb

Hello Meteorite Friends!
I posted a nice selection of meteorite boxes on my website, ranging from
small 1 x 2 x 0.75 clear acrylic boxes to 9.5 cubes to hold your large
samples. All boxes are made from clear acrylic/styrene and can be sealed
permanently if desired (as a service since I can't ship the solvent or you
can get it done at most local plastics shops.).

There is also an option to include a silicone elastomeric liner if you
desire to prevent sliding around and scratching the box. The silicone
doesn't outgas acetic acid or methanol, instead it is a platinum catalyzed
product that retains a night tackiness.

Two items that you'll want to include in your box are desiccant packets or
small drying button and a humidity indicator. They are on order and should
be available this week.

I am also working on a slice holder that allows all of the surface of the
slice to be viewed or even displayed with a rear illuminating light. It is a
little different that the Membrane Box. Here's a little movie showing how my
idea works, http://4-kats.homeip.net/auctionpics/MBoxes/slicebox.mp4

Hope you find this interesting and appropriate.
