we might consider his famous copperplate print 'Melencolia I' (1514) with

Hi there,

I think it was her, who ascribed that unsigned drawing by Albrecht Duerer,
to be an observation of the fireball of the Ensisheim meteorite

Re: [meteorite-list] Happy Birthday Ensisheim

2010-11-17 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi Matthias,

for me that phenomenon in Melencolia I is rather a comet.
Fits also better into the symbolism of the piece.
(like Tacitus, Plinius ect. as a sign of change, maybe downfall).
Whack is the additional rainbow.

Btw. I really doubt, that that painting by Duerer can be interpreted as a
naturalistic image of the Ensisheim Fireball or that it was intended to be.

http://kuerzer.de/Duererens

Ensisheim was a daylight fireball, plain day at noon.
That drawing, there it's dark and night.

And Duerer was a master of all techniques. And the exactness and the
naturalistic quality of his observations in his drawings and painitings are
legendary.
So if he wanted to depict the Ensisheim bolide, I think, he would have made
it in a different way.

Best!
Martin

Perhaps a zoo keeper that handles snakes can answer these questions since they
keep anti-venom on hand. The local hospitals here no longer carry scorpion
anti-venom and tell you to tuff it out for 22 days if you are stung by a nasty
one. I was told it is no longer available at any costs.

When I moved, my health insurance was no good here in Nevada. It took me

 if
something happening in field, I would not be able to afford it. I had no idea
this was an issue until I visited a doctor for an emergency and found my
insurance was no good here. After being stung twice by scorpions and hearing
 of
the mighty Mojave Green snake, I felt it necessary to inquire about such
things. I repeated what was told. The people here in the Southwest have
 strong
opinions about certain things so I take a lot of it with a grain of salt and
yes, sometimes the comments come from ignorance.

The main point is to do everything possible to avoid getting bitten or stung

[meteorite-list] Mojave Green Jeans - Images of a Killer Snake-Leonid Meteor Shower

2010-11-17 Thread JoshuaTreeMuseum
While we're on the off-topic of minority bashing: I live in an area with a
high concentration of Amish and Old-Order Mennonites. I don't know how many
times I've heard people say: You know you have to pay higher taxes because
the Amish don't have to pay taxes because it's against their religion.
Yeah right, I'd convert in a minute if that was true! (It is true they don't
pay Social Security taxes though, which is probably where people get this
idea.)

Michael: Actually the medical industry is the number one industry in the US
making up 20% of the GDP and employing over 14 million people. A relative of
mine with cancer just topped out his insurance at $1 million dollars. And
that's just one guy! Look at the money they're making just off that one
disease.

Don't forget tonight from midnight till 3 am is the Leonid meteor shower.

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Million Dollar Strong! (Was: Mojave Green Jeans)

2010-11-17 Thread Meteorites USA
Aside from the political overtones of his post, I think Michael's point
is palpable. It's happened countless times in the past, human need
transformed into greed. Draw a line and it will eventually be erased if
given enough time.

Everything is dynamic, including borders, fences, and arbitrary lines in
the sand. Empires rise and fall over time. Time and knowledge are the
deciding factors, not political affiliation or moral dogma. A video-map
of all the world's empires from the beginning of time until now would
look similar to diseases spreading and receding across the landscape of
our planet. The world at night from space appears similar to a petri
dish growing with blotches and bands of a human life which stretch for
hundreds and thousands of miles. The Earth when viewed from space is
simply another little spec among trillions upon trillions of specs in
this vast galaxy. The universe cannot fathom us, much less us the universe.

The idea that we charge money for energy which is free in the universe
is laughable or sad, I can't figure out which. One day it will be free.
The idea that someone should have to pay massive amounts money to save
themselves or a loved one, or repair an injury, disease, or cancer, is
ridiculously wrong.

Since we're talking about mothers here, I'll share a personal family
experience. My mother has suffered and survived 2 massive strokes and a
third mild stroke in between over the past 10 years. She's had multiple
heart attacks, and open heart surgery to install a stint which kept her
alive, but possibly caused the second massive stroke. The second big
stroke put her in the hospital for 5-6 months! While in the hospital
she contracted a necrotizing bacterial infection. For those that don't
know what that is, it eats flesh. This compounded the problem of the
stroke, infection and kidney failure, and many other health problems she
had while in the hospital. During this whole ordeal I was unable to see
her but ONCE while she was in the hospital since my family is in
Florida, and I live in California. We almost lost her many times, and I
dreaded that phone call in the middle of the night. The guilt for not
being able to be with my family during this hard time because of MONEY
made me seriously resent it. The medical bill for the almost 6 month
hospital stay was close to $1 Million dollars! (not sure of the exact
amount) I'm thankful for the hospital saving my mothers life, multiple
times during this ordeal. The hospital wrote off the expense... I'm not
sure how they could absorb a $1 Million expense but they did, and my
family didn't have to pay it back. We were scared they would take the
house, the cars and everything we own. There's no way an average family
can pay those kinds of medical bills...

The point is medical care has gotten so ridiculously expensive to the
point almost no one can afford it. This is backwards. We're doing it
wrong. Medical care should be free and your health natural. If you're
with a friend and he or she gets a scrape on the knee you'll give them a
band-aid.

Are you going to send them a bill later for using your band-aids,
alcohol swabs, or aspirin?

No, that would be silly wouldn't it...?

A video some might enjoy...

One of my tenants attempted to save the life of a Mohave by using a piece of
cardboard to push him off of the road. In doing so the snake bit him on the
hand. After a four day stay in the hospital I went to see him . He unwrapped
the bandages and it looked like someone had soaked his hand in acid. His skin
was still raw and incidentally, he did nearly die. To this day his hand has
scares like a burn victim.
As a side note. I grew up in Arizona and have been camping since I was a boy
scout. To this day he is the only person I know that has ever been bitten and
it clearly was his own fault. These snake bites do happen but, are relatively
rare. Ask yourself. How many people do you know that has actually been bitten?
People are not there prey. They try to avoid people the same as we try to avoid
them. Although I hear a certain deadly snake in Australia is actually known to
attack people?
Be smart. Don't stick your hands into invisible spaces and never try to rescue
a snake from the roadway. As leno would say. what did you think was going to
happen.

 Whoa.

Adam, I know you're only relating what you've been informed, but something
needs to be said of the nurse's outrageous ignorance.

The notion that aliens don't have insurance and U.S. citizens all carry
insurance has hardly been the case. A significant fraction of the citizenry
of Nevada and Arizona (and not just) have not been carrying health insurance.

Moreover, citizens are not dying as a result of aliens using up antivenin
stocks. The high cost of antivenin has to do with profit---not aliens. It
has been extensively written about that antivenin does not generate
sufficient profit for drug companies so the prices get hiked up to the Moon.
And then no one buys it to keep on hand so there are shortages.

 All best / Darryl

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA Announces Comet Encounter News Conference

List,
I wonder if these new images will shed new light on the definition of what a
comet is?
Typically the description includes the words frozen and ice in some form. But
clearly based on the close-up visual images. It seems that this thing is far
from being ice. In fact to me it appears to look more like a fiery hot
briquette about ready to throw the steaks on to. It seems from the photos that
this thing is fully lit from the inside core to the surface. And could not
possibly consist of ice in any of it's forms melted or frozen. Well, maybe the
surface stays wet and cold but the inside is far from cold.
Hopefully this conference will alert us all with an update as to what we
hunters need to be looking for. Because clearly it aint Ice. That's for sure.
But I am dying to find out what it is after all! It seems to me we should be
looking for melted stuff. Really really melted stuff. Has anyone heard yet what
they plan to say the interior is made up of?
My 2 more cents.

 Hi List,

Yesterday at my post office I was told that the parcel
weight for the airmail to USA is limited to 453 gram. All
heavier parcels can be send only by ground/boat.
I was told that this regulation will be at least until
 Christmas.
I'm wondering if this is only in Czech Republic or some
other countries have the same regulation?

 Thanks!
 Sergey

Re: [meteorite-list] NASA Announces Comet Encounter News Conference

2010-11-17 Thread Chris Peterson
Images can be deceiving. Certainly, the comet is not lit, except by
sunlight. As appears to be common with comets, it has a surface coating,
some sort of weathering, that results in an extremely low albedo. That isn't
apparent in an image that has had its white and dark points adjusted for
maximum clarity.

I don't think there is any doubt that the body is very cold in its interior,
and is made of some mixture of ices and stony material. The surface may well
approach room temperature, which is what is driving the boiling away of ices
that produces a coma.

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] NASA Announces Comet Encounter News Conference

List,
I wonder if these new images will shed new light on the definition of what
a comet is?
Typically the description includes the words frozen and ice in some form.
But clearly based on the close-up visual images. It seems that this thing
is far from being ice. In fact to me it appears to look more like a fiery
hot briquette about ready to throw the steaks on to. It seems from the
photos that this thing is fully lit from the inside core to the surface.
And could not possibly consist of ice in any of it's forms melted or
frozen. Well, maybe the surface stays wet and cold but the inside is far
from cold.
Hopefully this conference will alert us all with an update as to what we
hunters need to be looking for. Because clearly it aint Ice. That's for
sure. But I am dying to find out what it is after all! It seems to me we
should be looking for melted stuff. Really really melted stuff. Has anyone
heard yet what they plan to say the interior is made up of?

My 2 more cents.
Carl
