Re: [meteorite-list] The Tabor 1753 fall

2010-12-14 Thread Martin Altmann
Hi Chris,

the fall of Tabor was firstly documented in 1754 by the Bavarian-Bohemian
astronomer Joseph Stepling (1716 - 1778)in his publication:

De pluvia lapidea anni MDCCLIII ad Strkov pagum uno milliari Taborio
Bohemiae urbe dissitum, et ejus causis meditatio, Pragae 1754

On the stone rain of the year 1753 at the village Strkov, situated one mile
away from the Bohemian town Tabor,
and thoughts about its causes.

Maybe Edwin Thompson has this monography in his huge library?

Hi Everyone:

Part of the reason Nancy and I finally resigned as Editors of Meteorite
was the lack of transparency with respect to things like subscriptions and
how they were handled (Maria Haas, Nancy, and I tried to resolve this when
we worked on the August issue, just before things happened that led to our
resignation). I do not know how this might change now that everything is
being done at the University of Arkansas where the magazine is actually
published.

If you only received the first issue, it is because you did not pay for
2010. Subscribers get the February issue and a notice to renew (not sure
how this is done) and if they do not hear from you, I think that they just
let your subscription expire (at least that is how I think it worked).
Not the way I would like to see it handled and maybe with new people in
Arkansas, things will improve.

[meteorite-list] Geminid Meteor Shower Count

2010-12-14 Thread Orrin
Listeors

From my back yard in Surprise, AZ, between 1:50 AM and 2:43 AM I
observed 55 meteors. I'm sure there were many fainter ones that I
missed so I'm assuming that the per hour count in a nice dark area was
much higher. It was a spectacular show. I'm curious as to how many of
you went out, your count and your location.

Have a great holiday season

Dear Orrin and List:

Thank you for the report from a neighbor here in Arizona.

We had a wonderful show last night over Tucson. I spotted my first
Geminid at about 7:30 pm, and checked back periodically, later in the
night. The skies were very clear and after 12:30 am, once the Moon had
set, we were counting ~65 per hour. Most were faint but about 1 in 10
meteors were quite spectacular, with long, bright trails.

Easily the best Geminids shower I've ever seen. Hoping for a few more
tonight.

Hi Everyone:

Part of the reason Nancy and I finally resigned as Editors
of Meteorite
was the lack of transparency with respect to things like
subscriptions and
how they were handled (Maria Haas, Nancy, and I tried to
resolve this when
we worked on the August issue, just before things happened
that led to our
resignation). I do not know how this might change now that
everything is
being done at the University of Arkansas where the magazine
is actually
published.

If you only received the first issue, it is because you did
not pay for
2010. Subscribers get the February issue and a notice to
renew (not sure
how this is done) and if they do not hear from you, I think
that they just
let your subscription expire (at least that is how I think
it worked).
Not the way I would like to see it handled and maybe with
new people in
Arkansas, things will improve.

Frustrated ex-editor.

Larry Lebofsky

I have only received the first issue, too! Still

looking for issue 2!!!

Jack Schrader purchased the NWA 4936 stones and I purchased
the paired NWA 5406 lunar stones from a Moroccan dealer
(List member) who told us this material was found near

I was also provided an image of some of the stones next to
a GPS with coordinates clearly visible. A Google Earth
search places the spot south of Laayoune and SSW of Smara in
 Western Sahara.

Aziz, I appreciate your wanting to correct any false
entries in the Bulletin like the rest of us. If Jack and I
were provided with a false find location for NWA 4936/5406,
please let us know what you know. If we were lied to, this
is something only concerned Moroccans like yourself can try
to correct with your fellow countrymen. If we were provided
with false information, please contact your local friend and
sometime partner in Morocco, he will want to correct any
erroneous find locations as well. 'Confusion' like this is
why meteorites found in the Sahara desert are assigned with
an NWA designation number instead of an actual name of
where they are found, or reported as found from. There is
simply no confidence in this data because of a variety of
reasons (i.e. keep the site secret, the finder did not have
 GPS, etc.).

Here is part of my description for NWA 5406 that tries to
explain another problem with original distribution of NWA
 4936/5406:

Initially there was some confusion concerning the combined
Total Known Weight (TKW) of pairings of NWA 4936/5406 due to
mismanaged distribution of the original eight stones by a
Moroccan dealer. Eventually the puzzle was put together.
After thorough searches of the find site, it has been
established that there are eight individual stones that
together constitute NWA 5406 (six stones 281g) and NWA 4936
(two complete stones 179g and one 20g type sample from one
of the NWA 5406 stones) for a combined Total Known Weight of
480 grams. Two of the eight stones (179g total) were
purchased in 2007 by a collector, who removed 20 grams from
one of these complete stones and submitted it to a second
scientist for classification without realizing the material
had already been classified. Months later the two
classifying scientists were able to piece together the
puzzle when the final four stones were purchased, and
another 20 grams was submitted and classified under the NWA
5406 designation. Luckily, all eight stones were proved to
come from a single Moroccan dealer and/or finder then
classified by the same scientist! In all, a combined total
of 60.1 grams in type samples have been deposited at UWS and
 UAz.

I hope this helps, Thank You for your concerns!

[meteorite-list] Aurora Borealis last night (was: Geminid Meteor Shower Count)

2010-12-14 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello mt and List,

Sky Telescope, July 1981, p. 86: April's Intense Auroral Display

On April 10th, at about 16:55 Universal time, the Sun spewed a solar flare
from a region near the center of' its disk. It was a modest flare by solar
standards, but the high-energy electrons and protons it sent speeding out
into the planetary system were on a collision course with Earth.

Their arrival some 58 hours later was nothing short of spectacular, producing
an aurora reported = as far south as the Mexican border and Florida. =

The associated geomagnetic storm was more intense than any since those
resulting from the great solar Flares of August, 1972.

Best pre-Xmas wishes,

Bernd

of the aurora borealis were from El Paso and Seminole, Texas,
about 32 degrees north latitude; Lubbock, Texas and Anza,
California, 33 degrees; Wrightwood, California, 34 degrees;
Las Vegas, Nevada and Harrison, Arkansas, 36 degrees; Rio
Rancho, New Mexico, roughly 35 or 36 degrees; Stokesville,
Virginia, 38 degrees; Lucas Point Park, Kansas, 39 degrees;
Fillmore, Utah, 38 degrees along with Emerald, Nebraska,
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Champaign, Illinois at 40
degrees north..

I've seen it just once (in many years) from 38° 56' N. That's
easier than Austin (30° 15' N). The Great Aurora of
September 1-2, 1859 was seen in Hawaii (20 degrees N.)
Rome, and Havana, Cuba! In New England, the induced
current was so strong that they could disconnect their
telegraphs from their power and still operate on solar
storm energy alone.
http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/solarsystem/perfect_space_storm.html

There was hope for Texas auroras in early August, 2010,
after a major geomagnetic storm but I can find no confirmed
observations from that date.

There was a recent very major eruption on the Sun (although
not aimed at Earth), but your observations are in no way
impossible.

There may be more to come...

I swore I saw a faint and brief (1-2 sec) aurora borealis last night.
But this is Austin, Texas and they never get down this far. Did anyone
else see it?

2010-12-14 Thread Linton Rohr

Thanks for posting that, Bernd.
That explains a sighting I experienced in southern Illinois around that
date.
I stepped outside for some fresh air after a late night band rehearsal and
for a moment thought that the sunset was still lingering. Then I realized it
was well after midnight. There were large, shifting areas of pink and
purplish colors, rather than the green which is apparently more common. That
was the only time I've ever seen the aurora, but I'd sure like to get up to
Alaska and take in some more. I still haven't seen a total solar eclipse
either. One of these days...

Their arrival some 58 hours later was nothing short of spectacular,
producing

an aurora reported = as far south as the Mexican border and Florida. =

The associated geomagnetic storm was more intense than any since those
resulting from the great solar Flares of August, 1972.

Best pre-Xmas wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Off topic- the weather IS getting worse

2010-12-14 Thread Edwin Thompson

Hi folks, Oregon got slammed by a tornado today just 30 miles south of our
home. We watched the storm come and go. It was awesome! Very very unusual for
this region. They say it is a cold front from Alaska colliding with the
Pineapple Express; a warm storm that comes up from Hawaii and has been hitting
us for a week with warm air and 6 inches of rain in the past 5 days. They are
telling us to expect more tonight so we're keeping the fingers crossed. Saw my
first car destroyed by hail while visiting Marlin Cilz in Montana last month.
Now we have cars all around us with major hail damage. The news says another
major cell is coming this way right now. This is when the meteorites sneak in
unseen. Letting you folks know to the East that weather is on it's way!

Hey E.T.,
Letting you folks know to the East that weather is on it's way!

I know what you mean... It was 31 degrees last night at my house in Florida
when I rolled in at 3am, and I am about 3/4 the way down the state! It has
been down to freezing for several days and my plants and grass show the
strain, dead! Pretty depressing, this is the earliest the freeze has hit in
the last few years, usually February here. Getting rather expensive
replacing tropical bushes and trees every year, I won't be replacing any
that don't survive this winter! On the bright side, at least it is not super
humid and trying to destroy my meteorites! :-)

Stay warm and dry out there...

[meteorite-list] Geminid Meteor Shower Count

2010-12-14 Thread jim_brady611
Hi Listees
I was out last night from 2:00 A.M to 3:10 A.M and stopped
viewing at 100 meteors. My viewing location in Donegal in the West of
Ireland is extremely dark and I saw plenty of faint and short meteors
as well as a number of bright ones and a dozen or so that left trails
lasting a second or 2.
It was very cold here so I had a hood up and I was messing
around with my camera trying to catch my first meteor on film(well,
digital) so I suspect I missed quite a few as my eyes weren't always
looking straight up.I did have a couple move straight thru my camera
FOV but they didn't show on review.I suspect I had the ISO setting
wrong as it's the one thing I forgot to adjust until I saw it mentioned
online somewhere today. And it's cloudy tonight of course
One thing that did surprise me with this fantastic display
last night was the number of meteors that were right at the edge of my
vision going to the horizon. They were all Geminids as the radiant was
correct. One other thing that was quite exciting was the couple of times
when I saw 6 meteors in a minute, that really got me thinking of the
great Leonid shower of 1966,what that must have looked like to see 1000
a minute.
WOW--great Geminids--loved it

Re: [meteorite-list] Off topic- the weather IS getting worse + On topic Geminid pic

2010-12-14 Thread John Hendry
Carl,

Don't jinx this! We just got here from Manitoba on Friday and are
thoroughly enjoying the 100 degree leap in our ambient temperatures. It is
perfect.

We're on a resort in Apache Junction and I took the mutts out to the
dogpark around 9pm last night and set up the camera with a wide-angle
trained to the east. Loosed off half a dozen 2 minute exposures and never
caught anything. I had long exposure noise reduction turned on so there
was an equal amount of time between shots while the camera collected noise
data from the sensor to subtract from the frame information. Over about 30
minutes I didn't see any meteors. However the place is lit with numerous
sodium lamps and the scatter and flare in the sky was awfully strong.
Would have thought to have caught something as cloud cover was whispy and
minimal and you could see the majority of the bright stars just fine.
Called it a night, but got up at six and this time headed to the ball
diamond away from the lights as best I could. Sky was still pretty clear
with some patchy haze. Saw one bright one dropping vertically in the east
as I was setting up and got about 6 frames off before the dawn got the
better of the heavens. Over about 30 minutes I saw about 5, most of them
appearing roughly to the south. Only managed to get one in frame...

(typically all the rest decided to pop into view as the camera was doing
its noise reduction thing).

In comparison to some of the astrophotography out there, this is
extraordinarily lame, but I'm quite please I got something at my first
attempt.

Image is looking roughly south with the camera axis elevated to about 75
degrees from horizontal. Angle of view is around 100 degrees diagonally.

Is the temporal distribution of these things completely random or do they
tend to arrive in 'clumps' or with relatively constant intervals between
them? I don't think I was seeing enough to get a feel for this.

Regards,
John

ET, Mike, all,
Thanks so much for the warning. It has been over 80 here in Tucson the
past 4 days. Can't wait for some cooler weather.
Sorry. I couldn't resist. But, it is supposed to get down to a chilling
79 tomorrow.

[meteorite-list] Aurora Borealis last night (was: Geminid MeteorShower Count)

Good morning Listees and Listoids,

Last night Linton also wrote:

There were large, shifting areas of pink and purplish colors,
rather than the green which is apparently more common.

Sky Telescope, July 1981, p. 86:

Auroras above 240 km (150 miles) are mainly red from light
given off by oxygen atoms. Between 100 and 240 km it is the
green light from oxygen that is most apparent, and below these
altitudes the red and blue light of nitrogen atoms is strongest.
It is likely this latter source was responsible for much of the
April [1981] display.

Cheers,

Bernd
