[meteorite-list] Brisbane Floods

2011-01-14 Thread dean bessey
I have spent much of today and yesterday responding to emails from well wishers
asking if I am OK in the floods so I will give my own first hand account twenty
miles or so from ground zero.
I am happy to report that we are all fine and not a part of what your front
page news is currently showing but we had a much to close for comfort close
call.
Its been raining for weeks and 3 weeks or so ago the news was 5 or 6 hours
north and inland where the news showed people being rescued from rooftops by
helicopter but other than the news and lots of rain we werent really affected.
About two weeks ago here the rain picked up - a lot. Torrential rain kept
coming but other than no access to outdoor activities we werent really
affected. I pretty much have lived on ebay recently anyway. The roads have been
closed regularly up north and sunday the road a few miles north of me was
closed. Everywhere north of me was cut off except by helicopter.
Monday, in Toowoomba, a town a hundred miles inland from Brisbane is when the
international news started showing you pictures of brisbane. A meters high wall
of water and mud out of nowhere suddendly leveled Toowoomba's business district
and left carnage in its wake. Towns downstream were devestated and thats when
you got all that video footage of cars being swept everywhere and helicopters
rescueing people. I started regularly hearing helicopters flying low as they
search for people needing rescue. A local news channel made a video of a family
on the top of a white van flowing down a raging river hundreds of meters wide.
That video probably was the biggest most graphic image of the floods and the
premiers office and news stations were all inundated with calls wondering how
they were. Yesterday the premier reported at a news conference that the mom and
9 year old boy was rescued but when the helicopter returned for dad he was gone
and is now listed as
missing. If he ever turns up in one piece it will be the biggest rescue story
of the floods and he will get rich being interviewed by oprah and similar
people but it probably wont happen.
This is all nearby to me and in places that I am very familiar with but in
reality its all just news to me.
Sunday night my chickens house got flooded and I moved them to a small unused
shed for a temporary accomodation.
Tuesday morning my wife comes is saying that we have a pond in the back yard.
Water has made it to the new chicken home and I piled up some pallets for them
to live on. All eight of my usually very pampered chickens spends a couple of
sad, soggy and miserable days with no roosts camped out on the top of a stack
of pallets. They are not happy chickens.
There is a little creek that overflowed its banks a short distance from me and
water is slowly coming up to a storage shed and in the extremily vicious
thunder storm convinces us to pile things up in case it gets flooded. I still
have hundreds of boxes unopened from the move from New Zealand last year so we
decide to put the fragile and valuable stuff on top of the less valuable boxes
and as we are done we get a standardized government text saying that there are
flash floods near us and that we are advised to report to an evacuation centre
nearby. A couple minutes later we lose both phone and internet (Our cell phone
company apparantly had a building full of equipment flood and I never did find
out why we lost internet).
Then, just before noon some lady from the preschool where my two kiddies are at
knocks on the door saying they have been trying to call me and that I have to
go pick up the kids quick as the police had ordered the schools
closed and any kids not picked up would be taken to an evacuation centre
because they were not going to let the kids be there by one occlock which was
high tide and they were worried about what would happen during high tide.
Back home the water slowly comes up my yard. Like the tide. Not a bit of wind
and almost calm except for the buckets of water raining down. Water is getting
very close to flooding us. My eight chickens are huddled together on top of the
pallet all wet and miserable and the water is within inches of flooding us to.
Its getting close to the 1PM high tide and we wonder if the water will keep
coming after high tide. We are a good ten miles from the sea. I am 4 inches
from getting flooded but luckily that 4 inches of concrete saved me. Just two
streets down from me the streets just a bit lower and closer to the (Now not so
little) creek have the police going down the street in boats looking for people
who need help or evacuation.
The water goes down pretty fast after high tide and while still soggy by 3PM
there is no longer a pond in my yard. The rain also stops for a while and over
the next hour we hear low flying helicopters a few times.
4:30 I go into town (only a mile away) for pizza (Tuesday is cheap pizza day).
Some roads are blocked and others are 4WD roads only.

Hello Larry, Dan, and List,

No wonder Black Onaping material is magnetic given the fact

In other words, Black Onaping contains sulfides and nickel(-iferous)

Wow Dean, you paint a vivid picture of the situation where you live.
It's good to know you and your family are all ok, including your chickens!
To be on the brink of being flooded out by a mere 4 of concrete is scary
indeed. And to think where you almost moved, in Forest Hill last year where
you definitely would have been in danger has to be Murphy's Law in reverse.

Great to hear from you buddy!

A good demonstration of this is to have a large slice of Black Onaping
lying flat and rolling a small ball magnet over the surface. Of coarse
any sized slice will work as there are metallic areas every few inches

I have a large collection of impactites from all over the world, yes they

and that is a slice of Ternovka, a black material that is quite magnetic. I

2011-01-14 Thread Larry Atkins

Dan, Bernd, All,

One needs to look closely to see the metal. In fact it wasn't really
visible until I gave it a good polish.

A little trick I have for determining if the metal or sulphide in a
rock is responsible for the magnetic attraction is to take a tiny chip
off a rare earth or neodymium magnet and scoot it around with a
toothpick, looking to see if it jumps from grain to grain. If you do
this with a rock that's magnetic and has visible pyrite in it, you will
see the magnet jump away from the metallic material, (pyrite). Only
rarely does it jump from metal grain to metal grain. This Black Onaping
is one of those rare exceptions.

Sincerely,
Larry Atkins

sound travels about 7seconds a mile so it is important when viewing a fireball

about 5 minutes for the sound to reach you. Cheers Steve Dunklee

[meteorite-list] Core samples from chondrites

2011-01-14 Thread Meteorites USA

Forwarded to the list for Sean Murray

Folks,

Does anyone have experience taking a core sample from a chondrite for
repository / classification. The purpose would be to preserve certain
exterior characteristics by taking ~25 grams in a core and keep the 5gm
crusted plug. As a side note, considering most cores I found online
were marble cutting using water or a coolant, I would also be interested
if the process could be done dry, even if the cutting bit is wasted in
process.

Re: [meteorite-list] Huge Fireball: Possible First Meteorite Fall of 2011

2011-01-14 Thread Meteorites USA

UPDATE: I've added another map to the mess. ;)

Don't really have time to do anything with this, those who can use it
here it is. Marc Fries' radar data is plotted on the map,
http://radarmeteorites.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/southern-ms-12-jan-11-0244-utc/
and I credit him for his work. Nice job! An interesting note is that I
conducted 2 phone interviews with two eye witnesses a day or so before
Marc posted his radar data. When I plotted their reports on the map, they
roughly pointed in the same general area as the radar return with
regard to their sighting direction and flight path of the fireball. The
witness North of Pickens AR reported massive fragmentation, and the
witness in MS stated they saw no fragmentation and that the fireball
appeared to fall all the way to the ground. Not sure if 20 miles would
make the difference between seeing the fragmentation or not, but the MS
witness was 241 miles from Marc's radar return, whereas, the Pickens AR
witness was 221 miles away. (this assuming the radar return is the
bolide event) It's possible that the small differentiation between the
distances from the fireball event and the curvature of the Earth allowed
the AR witness to see the fragmentation, whereas the MS witness was
unable to see it because their view was obscured by the horizon. A lot
of things need to be considered like the altitude, the timing of the
sighting, the height/altitude of each witness. Either way, it's
interesting.

Let me make this disclaimer. This is only a rough estimate based on
compiled information, sonic boon reports, fireball sighting reports,
radar, and phone interviews. Use this info at your own risk. Video is
basically useless, and I've not yet plotted ANY video on this map. I've
heard of some CNN video, and other video which actually shows the
fireball in the air, but have only seen one. Anyone wanting to help let
me know. I'll plot it when I get time.

Enjoy...

Happy Hunting!

Regards,
Eric

We might have our first meteorite fall of 2011. Too many reports of
fragmentation and sonic booms for it not to be. Looks like this might
be the real deal.

Here's some quotes from the articles:

A sonic boom was heard as far north as Western North Carolina...

...Copiah County Emergency Management Director Randle Drane said
residents who saw the light and heard a subsequent boom called to
report what they had seen or heard. The majority of those who heard
the boom were near the town of Hopewell just southeast of Crystal
Springs

...Little Rock, Ark. Around 8:30 p.m. we began receiving calls about
a bright flash of light and a boom...

...Around 9 PM Tuesday, the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office received
several calls of what looked like balls of fire falling from the sky

...According to affiliate KFSM, the meteor was also sighted in
Greenwood, Jonesboro, Jackson, Miss., Biloxi, Miss., and the Florida
Panhandle

Reports still coming in...

Re: [meteorite-list] Core samples from chondrites

2011-01-14 Thread Greg Hupe

Hello Sean,

I had a core sample taken from a large angrite (NWA 4931) I took to MIT for
magnetism analysis a few years ago. They used a 1/2 diamond-tipped bit with
water coolant and drilled in about 3 to get to the center of the stone. We
clamped the stone onto a drill press and made a makeshift 'girdle' to
collect the cutting sludge. The same process could be used dry but depending
on the type and density of the meteorite, you may have limited success.

Best Regards,
Greg

Subject: [meteorite-list] Core samples from chondrites

Forwarded to the list for Sean Murray

Folks,

Does anyone have experience taking a core sample from a chondrite for
repository / classification. The purpose would be to preserve certain
exterior characteristics by taking ~25 grams in a core and keep the 5gm
crusted plug. As a side note, considering most cores I found online
were marble cutting using water or a coolant, I would also be interested
if the process could be done dry, even if the cutting bit is wasted in
process.

Bernd and all,

I have a large collection of impactites from all over the world, yes they
were caused by meteoritic impact but few have material identifiable from the
impactor. My Monturaqui contains visible metallic grains but I had never
thought to check my other impactites. Thus far I have only found one other
and that is a slice of Ternovka, a black material that is quite magnetic. I
would be interested to have others check their collections for this feature.

 Hello Larry, Dan, and List,

I do wonder about the metal in the Onaping.
Typically, is there metal in Onaping?

I pulled out my slice of Black Onaping, it is indeed
magnetic in certain spots. This is a revelation.

No wonder Black Onaping material is magnetic given the fact
that the Sudbury Structure is the result of a meteorite impact.

In other words, Black Onaping contains sulfides and nickel(-iferous)
 inclusions ... hence magnetic!

 Best wishes,

 Bernd

[meteorite-list] 1099s coming?

2011-01-14 Thread Richard Montgomery

Hello List...

Potential legislation mandating the issuance of 1099s to all documented
transactions, and obviously those tied with a digital/cyber signature, has
promted me to write this. I don't know the bill's name, but we've all heard
about it, and the implications. From what I understand, transactions
between any and all entities that exceed $600/year and/or each transaction
will mandate the generation of the issuance of a 1099 to all parties.

I woke up to this fact when I heard that eBay will potentially be issuing
mandated tax-consequence 1099s to all who participate at that level. I
can't imagine the nightmare logistics, but can certainly imagine the impact
of on-line transactions if this legislation is actually passed.

It stands to reason that all cyber transactions will be subject to this
imposition, including private trades and sales though this very List.

So, naturally, I'm putting the subject to us all to consider. I hope to get
some input, positive and/or negative, to whether my issues are valid. So,
please chime in. Fortunately, through this List I've made some contact with
people I trust, although haven't yet met.

Please advise...

[meteorite-list] 1099s coming?

2011-01-14 Thread Carl 's

Hi Richard, All,

I don't know about private trades and sales but it seems like everyone loses
including ebay. Maybe more sales off ebay and payment with money orders...

On the other hand, maybe phony meteorites on ebay with an asking price of
$250,000 will disappear.

That provision is buried somewhere in the 2000+ pages of our wonderful new

what's in it. The 16,000 new IRS agents will be charged with enforcing it.
That provision isn't scheduled to go into effect until 2012. I think I'll

[meteorite-list] HiRes CT - Sikhote-Alin in tree

There are hundreds of images so I just chose one John.

The specimen is cut roughly and it is old, as such it is difficult to count

Hi Rob and thanks for sharing the photos. The low resolution X-ray
tomography
images are a bit difficult to interpret. Perhaps you could post some high
res
images? From what I can see, there do not appear to be very many annual
growth
rings. How many do you count? What year were these harvested?

Also two of the other 'branches' on your site look to me more like root
balls
(burls) with the roots cut off as David Vann has previously pointed out
about
Anne's example. They don't appear to have very many annual growth rings
either...how many do you count? Personally, I suspect that the ones that
look
root-like may be examples of trees that grew on top of a meteorite sometime
after the 1947 fall as opposed to examples of 1947 impacts. Still pretty
cool
though!

Anyone else have any thoughts or different interpretations about Rob's
images?

Hello all

I picked up Matt Morgan's piece a couple years ago and did have it CT'd.
Quite striking resolution and a non-destructive way to analyze the ring
formation. I have not taken the images to any horticulturist to weigh in on
but I'm willing to make the CT disc available to science for evaluation upon
request. I was given the source by Matt and have no concerns regarding it's
authenticity.

Two more tree specimens can be seen here and one of them is headed for CT
due to purchaser request. I left them up but both are sold. Same source for
all of these specimens including Anne's.
