I'd recommend leaving early and being up there when it is first opens. I'd leave before rush hour traffic in order to get back to Tucson. You should give such a field trip there 3/4's of a day. I'd try to contact the staff to see if they would consider giving you a backroom tour well ahead of time. Pehaps a group could arrange such a field trip. Hope this helps. First of all let me say we will be sharing a room this year at the Tucson show with Casey and Laurie Conway (A Piece of the Past) We will be in the Ramada Limited From Jan 27th until most likely Feb 12th room 131. I actually tried, but our network was not willing to ship the OCC bike out for the gem show. Isn't that a shame? If it was up to me, I would have sent one of my guys out there to pick it up and drive it back here, but we couldn't make it happen. Oh well, maybe next year. As a consolation prize, the 223-lb Alpha pallasite that Steve and I found on Episode One, Season Two will be on display in my room (Suite 323 at the Hotel Tucson City Center/InnSuites) for the duration of the show, in all its glory, as well as numerous other on-camera finds from Meteorite Men. Dear Greg: The Orange County Choppers motorcycle is an expensive and complicated piece of machinery and current plans are (hopefully) for it to be exhibited at the Discovery Communications headquarters building in Silver Spring, Maryland. We screen DVDs of our show all the time at public appearances, etc., and the network has also given complimentary copies to all our friends who worked on, or appeared in the show. I think the issue you may be referring to concerned instances where entire episodes were posted on non-network websites without permission. TV shows are © material and the network doesn't like other people showing them without clearing it first. As a business owner, I'm sure you can appreciate the importance of intellectual property rights. Yes, we do keep everything we find, except in specific cases (i.e. Gold Basin) where we had a special federal permit and finds were turned over to the National Park Service. If you're in Tucson for the gem show, please stop by my room and you can see some of the more interesting finds from both seasons. We've been so busy with existing commitments that we don't actually have an agent, but if you know a good one please let me know. Hi Rob all, I don't think Count wants to (or anyone should) post such info On an internationally available website (the archives). To me, there is no shame - except on the part of the people trying To extort them under the guise of whatever official title they May hold. If it didn't land on private property any discovered meteorite is the rightful gain of the finder. However, what is right and what turds Make laws about are quite often two different things. Since I am too Damned old to be traipsing about in foreign lands, I can afford the Freedom to condemn such crapolla. However, I don't think it would be a good idea to identify specific individuals OR countries involved (MANY countries have hooligans in uniforms looking to exploit their leverage at every opportunity). In addition, some countries may want to make an example of any Individuals in any given circumstance if specifics of a situation become known. http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-022 Mars Sliding Behind Sun After Rover Anniversary Jet Propulsion Laboratory January 20, 2011 Mars Exploration Rover Mission Status Report PASADENA, Calif. -- The team operating NASA's Mars rover Opportunity will temporarily suspend commanding for 16 days after the rover's seventh anniversary next week, but the rover will stay busy. For the fourth time since Opportunity landed on Mars on Jan. 25, 2004, Universal Time (Jan. 24, Pacific Time), the planets' orbits will put Mars almost directly behind the sun from Earth's perspective. During the days surrounding such an alignment, called a solar conjunction, the sun can disrupt radio transmissions between Earth and Mars. To avoid the chance of a command being corrupted by the sun and harming a spacecraft, NASA temporarily refrains from sending commands from Earth to Mars spacecraft in orbit and on the surface. This year, the commanding moratorium will be Jan. 27 to Feb. 11 for Opportunity, with similar periods for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Mars Odyssey orbiter. Downlinks from Mars spacecraft will continue during the conjunction period, though at a much reduced rate. Mars-to-Earth communication does not present risk to spacecraft safety, even if transmissions are corrupted by the sun. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will scale back its observations of Mars during the conjunction period due to reduced capability to download data to Earth and a limit on how much can be stored onboard. Opportunity will continue sending data daily to the Odyssey orbiter for relay to Earth. Overall, we expect to receive a smaller volume of daily data from Opportunity and none at all during the deepest four days of conjunction, said Alfonso Herrera, a rover mission manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. The rover team has developed a set of commands to be sent to Opportunity in advance so that the rover can continue science activities during the command moratorium. The goal is to characterize the materials in an area that shows up with a mineralogical signal, as seen from orbit, that's different from anywhere else Opportunity has been, said JPL's Bruce Banerdt, project scientist for Opportunity and its rover twin, Spirit. The area is at the southeastern edge of a crater called Santa Maria, which Opportunity approached from the west last month. Drives last week brought Opportunity to the position where it will spend the conjunction period. From that position, the rover's robotic arm can reach an outcrop target called Luis de Torres. The rover's Moessbauer spectrometer will be placed onto the target for several days during the conjunction to assess the types of minerals present. The instrument uses a small amount of radioactive cobalt-57 to elicit information from the target. With a half-life of less than a year, the cobalt has substantially depleted during Opportunity's seven years on Mars, so readings lasting several days are necessary now to be equivalent to much shorter readings when the mission was newer. Opportunity will also make atmospheric measurements during the conjunction period. After conjunction, it will spend several more days investigating Santa Maria crater before resuming a long-term trek toward Endurance crater, which is about 22 kilometers (14 miles) in diameter and, at its closest edge, about 6 kilometers (4 miles) from Santa Maria. Opportunity's drives to the southeastern edge of Santa Maria brought the total distance driven by the rover during its seventh year on Mars to 7.4 kilometers (4.6 miles), which is more than in any previous year. The rover's total odometry for its seventh anniversary is 26.7 kilometers (16.6 miles). Opportunity and Spirit, which landed three weeks apart, successfully completed their three-month prime missions in April 2004, then began years of bonus extended missions. Both have made important discoveries about wet environments on ancient Mars that may have been favorable for supporting microbial life. Spirit's most recent communication was on March 22, 2010. On the possibility that Spirit may yet awaken from a low-power hibernation status, NASA engineers continue to listen for a signal from that rover. Amino acids are used to build proteins, which are used by life to make structures like hair and nails, and to speed up or regulate chemical reactions. Amino acids come in two varieties that are mirror images of each other, like your hands. Life on Earth uses the left-handed kind exclusively. Since life based on right-handed amino acids would presumably work fine, scientists are trying to find out why Earth-based life favored left-handed amino acids. In March, 2009, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., reported the discovery of an excess of the left-handed form of the amino acid isovaline in samples of meteorites that came from carbon-rich asteroids. This suggests that perhaps left-handed life got its start in space, where conditions in asteroids favored the creation of left-handed amino acids. Meteorite impacts could have supplied this material, enriched in left-handed molecules, to Earth. The bias toward left-handedness would have been perpetuated as this material was incorporated into emerging life. In the new research, the team reports finding excess left-handed isovaline (L-isovaline) in a much wider variety of carbon-rich meteorites. This tells us our initial discovery wasn't a fluke; that there really was something going on in the asteroids where these meteorites came from that favors the creation of left-handed amino acids, says Dr. Daniel Glavin of NASA Goddard. Glavin is lead author of a paper about this research published online in Meteoritics and Planetary Science January 17. This research builds on over a decade of work on excesses of left-handed isovaline in carbon-rich meteorites, said Dr. Jason Dworkin of NASA Goddard, a co-author on the paper. Initially, John Cronin and Sandra Pizzarello of Arizona State University showed a small but significant excess of L-isovaline in two CM2 meteorites. Last year we showed that L-isovaline excesses appear to track with the history of hot water on the asteroid from which the meteorites came. In this work we have studied some exceptionally rare meteorites which witnessed large amounts of water on the asteroid. We were gratified that the meteorites in this study corroborate our hypothesis, explained Dworkin. L-isovaline excesses in these additional water-altered type 1 meteorites (i.e. CM1 and CR1) suggest that extra left-handed amino acids in water-altered meteorites are much more common than previously thought, according to Glavin. Now the question is what process creates extra left-handed amino acids. There are several options, and it will take more research to identify the specific reaction, according to the team. However, liquid water seems to be the key, notes Glavin. We can tell how much these asteroids were altered by liquid water by analyzing the minerals their meteorites contain. The more these asteroids were altered, the greater the excess L-isovaline we found. This indicates some process involving liquid water favors the creation of left-handed amino acids. Another clue comes from the total amount of isovaline found in each meteorite. In the meteorites with the largest left-handed excess, we find about 1,000 times less isovaline than in meteorites with a small or non-detectable left-handed excess. This tells us that to get the excess, you need to use up or destroy the amino acid, so the process is a double-edged sword, says Glavin. Whatever it may be, the water-alteration process only amplifies a small existing left-handed excess, it does not create the bias, according to Glavin. Something in the pre-solar nebula (a vast cloud of gas and dust from which our solar system, and probably many others, were born) created a small initial bias toward L-isovaline and presumably many other left-handed amino acids as well. One possibility is radiation. Space is filled with objects like massive stars, neutron stars, and black holes, just to name a few, that produce many kinds of radiation. It's possible that the radiation encountered by our solar system in its youth made left-handed amino acids slightly more likely to be created, or right-handed amino acids a bit more likely to be destroyed, according to Glavin. It's also possible that other young solar systems encountered different radiation that favored right-handed amino acids. If life emerged in one of these solar systems, perhaps the bias toward right-handed amino acids would be built in just as it may have been for left-handed amino acids here,

MikeG, Michael and Listers, I think it would be a great idea to broadcast the auction via the internet. All Michael would need is a yahoo, AOL, or Skye account and a computer with a cam and a mic and there you go. He could broadcast that and then put out a post on the screen name and when people wanted to view the video, all someone has to do is allow that user to see the video. This is a great idea MikeG and hope Michael or someone else would be able to do this at the auction. For I wont be going to the Gem show and I think auctions are the best to watch and bid on. I know I would be watching for sure if someone sets this up and I think alot of other Listers too. Or the live feed could even come from someones website if they have the ability to do that.
