Mike, Doug, and All,

The recent post by Michael Mulgrew is accurate.

The MetSoc only recognizes the name Los Angeles.

The recent post by Doug Dawn raises a valid question.

I made a rookie mistake 13 years ago and I've been paying for it ever since.

Lesson to all rookies:  don't make rookie mistakes!
No, seriously, it's okay to self-assign pet-names and even field ID numbers to
your meteorites, but DON'T self-assign 001 to 00n numbers, or try to mimic
NomCom formally-approved meteorite names.  Especially when it is based on
pre-classification self-pairings.

Doug,
I asked Bob Verish about this a few months ago.  The MetBul does not
show number designations, it recognizes two stones that make up the
TKW for the Los Angeles meteorite.  The 001 and 002 designations were
internal to Mr. Verish for his own record keeping, but I believe he
said (and I hope he'll chime in and correct me if I am mistaken) he
used them publically a few times and without realizing it the number
designation spread.

Hello All,
Greg is correct; unless the meteorites have been found in a demarcated
dense collection area, they should not receive separate names.  The
Nomenclature Committee's policies regarding serial naming are rather
clear -- and since the stones are apparently paired, I believe
Franconia is the perfect analogy.  Per existing regulations, these
stones should not receive new names.

If I am to understand correctly, someone of questionable integrity was
involved with the recovery of the third stone.

Since you failed to answer my question in private, Diero, I'll ask you
here -- is that correct?

You're about to discover the amazing gift idea which has taken the U.S.

Increased respect from the people you know
VIP treatment
Access to the privileged world
A instant talking point with your friends
Prestige in the financial world
A boost to your personal confidence
Opportunities that otherwise would've passed you by
Opened doors in your career
Discounts in the consumer world
The ability to influence people effortlessly
It's frightening how people in the twenty-first century still perceive
a person with a title to be richer, more intelligent and better thought

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Wrongs On EBay

2011-08-22 Thread Adam Hupe
It is interesting that 8 of of the top 10 priced meteorites on eBay are not
meteorites at all

Our
Friend Steve C. is at it again. I heard a funny statement in regards
to this less-than-informed person. He is now being called The Man From
Unco. It is funny that the Unco formation, short for Uncompahgre, is
known for the producing terrestrial breccias. These breccias from
rhyolitic volcanics of the Uncompahgre-San Jaun caldera complex mimic,
in appearance only, some lunar breccias.  This site known for the famous
San Jaun breccias is less than 50 miles from Stevy's house.

Steve,
has now cried Unco one too many times.  He now claims to have the North
American twin brother to NWA 5K.  Sorry Stevy, not even close however
you have earned yourself a name in the Book of Frauds and the Who's Who
of
Crazies.  I know you lurk on this list so I will give you one warning
only to take out all references NWA 5K in your fraudulent listings.
This is an official meteorite that should in no way be confused with
delusions that San Juan breccias are from the Moon.

I questioned Steve on his claim that winning bids on his lunar items are
80 percent tax deductible. I found this impossible since his organization is
not listed with the IRS as a tax-deductible organization. You can see all

Steve so politely emailed me the following information...

Walter! Walter! Walter!! Shame on you, Dude! Unless you are Cobaltbird,

Thanks for letting me record your statements! I have you in my sights,

...and...

I've got your number, Wally, and I'll be passing it on! Thanks for your

your unprofessional, unethical, discourteous, and unscientific comments to
yourself! Just find something else to do, will you? Preferably, something
that will benefit someone besides yourself! Steve

He's still trying to sell his rhyolitic volcanics on Ebay. I was in his area

Guess not... Dear Count... (just trying to stay polite...)

A Count is just and only a title given by a few terrestrial beings...

Because in your case, I really don't think any divine high spirited being

Your sordid accumulation of titles ...
the way you spill them to the plebeians... is just simply absolutely

You might be a Count... but such a weak, dull spirit compared to my

Now, as to your fascination with the story of the recent Cat Mountain

and it's too late now cause it's all gone! Gone... To happy campers.

Meteorites may have landed in the region

Residents of northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania should be on the
lookout for space rocks.

At 1:22 a.m. Aug. 8, sky cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor
Network in Canada recorded a meteor as it entered the Earth's atmosphere
over Lake Erie, and scientists at NASA say they have high confidence that
pieces of the meteor landed in northern Trumbull County.

The fireball entered the atmosphere 54 miles above Lake Erie, traveling
south-by-southeast at approximately 55,900 mph. Dr. William Cooke, head of
NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office, said debris created Doppler radar
echoes west of Hermitage, Pa.

The International Astronomical Union defines a fireball as a meteorite
brighter than any of the planets. In essence, the mass and speed of the
meteor increase its visibility, Cooke said.

Cooke said the fragments are about two to three inches in diameter and
likely weigh a few ounces.

Patrick Durrell, an astronomy professor at Youngstown State University said
the fragments can be difficult to identify, but there is at least one
telltale sign.

If you pick up a rock that feels a lot heavier than you'd expect for its
size, that's a good place to start, Durrell said.

Durrell and Cooke both said meteorite landings like this one are highly
common and occur daily.

Jay Reynolds, research astronomer at Cleveland State University, said
meteorites like this one are not dangerous, and have no radioactivity but
are scientifically very fascinating when you can find them.

Reynolds said denser meteorites are usually the ones that make contact with
the Earth because they can withstand the pressure of the thicker layers of
Earth's atmosphere.

He said in this case, the thicker layers caused the meteor to fracture into
meteorites.

While you won't see something like this coming into this area every night,
in and of itself, it's not that uncommon, Durrell said.

Cooke said that while meteorite falls are very common, a given point on
Earth may only see such a fireball once every couple of decades.

What makes this sighting special, Cooke said, is that the meteor was tracked
and its trajectory recorded from start to finish.

Very few meteorites are tracked on their way down, so this would be very
special, Cooke said.

Reynolds said many of the meteorites that have been found over time are
composed largely of iron and small amounts of nickel and other metal
compounds, with carbonaceous cores.

Cooke, however, said the composition of this meteor is unknown and will not
be determined until a fragment is found and studied.

He said the farthest point of the meteor's orbit corresponds with the outer
edge of the asteroid belt between the planets of Mars and Jupiter.

Should the National Aeronautics and Space Administration retrieve a piece of
this meteor, Cooke said, they could determine the compositional differences
of matter based on distance from the sun.

Of course, that kind of research hinges entirely upon somebody actually
finding a piece of meteorite, and so far, Cooke said, nobody has reported
one.

Residents contacted in Kinsman and Gustavus reported no knowledge of finding
any space rock.

Nobody mentioned it at lunch today. It's news to me, said Kinsman Township
Trustee Tony Gates, who dines regularly with residents of Kinsman and
Gustavus.

Gustavus Trustee Alan Bradford echoed Gates: I haven't heard anybody say
anything about it.

I got this from the moronHe need to be banned from
this list.

Stew; You already are! You've been on a very interesting list for a long
time, now! You would, only, be investigating yourself, and a number of your
friends!
There's an old axiom that says, just because someone has a diploma on
the wall, or a badge on their chest, does not make them good people! You
are an excellent example of this!
I've added your note, and mine, to your profile, as if they need any more
information on you.
Have a lovely evening, Butthead!.And, keep your politically
motivated unscientific comments to yourself!

Hi, Stew; You are up to your same old tricks, old buddy.
Shame, Shame, Shame!!! You need a new profession. This meteorite thing
just isn't working for you, is it! This is a field that takes a little
thinking research; something you are, totally, unfamiliar with!
So, you are a COP! Why don't you do a little, real investigating!
like who your real mother was?

Love ya!?..NOT NOW!, NOT LATER!, NOT EVER!!

Adam,

I questioned Steve on his claim that winning bids on his lunar items are
80 percent tax deductible. I found this impossible since his organization is
not listed with the IRS as a tax-deductible organization. You can see all
that information at the Secretary of the State of Colorado web site, under
his filing for his organization... Has the organization applied for or
been granted IRS tax exempt status? : No and Are contributions to the
organization tax deductible?: No

Steve so politely emailed me the following information...

Walter! Walter! Walter!! Shame on you, Dude! Unless you are Cobaltbird,
or some other lost soul, or a IMCA LOONIE, you've never, once, emailed me.
Thanks for letting me record your statements! I have you in my sights,
Buddy! I will take no prisoners! But, I will take your resignation from
the IMCA!!! Love ya!.NOT A CHANCE!! Steve

...and...

I've got your number, Wally, and I'll be passing it on! Thanks for your
input, and let me know when you graduate Jr. High! In the meantime, keep
your unprofessional, unethical, discourteous, and unscientific comments to
yourself! Just find something else to do, will you? Preferably, something
that will benefit someone besides yourself! Steve

He's still trying to sell his rhyolitic volcanics on Ebay. I was in his area
just a week ago, took a short 4 day Four Corners vacation to ruins, rocks,
and state parks. If you're not careful, you'll trip over this junk he tries
to sell.
