Doug, Why would you suggest that Montrose Altrusa would get involved in arbitrating the Curry phony meteorite controversy? Sandra Lee Tyler is simply a member of Altrusa, and she has a position on their Yearbook Committee. Montrose Altrusa has nothing to do with Steve Curry's charities and scientific organizations. Your suggestion that Montrose Altrusa would have anything to do with these meteorite sales (like the ICMA) is silly. Why would they? And you mention that you haven't seen any of these Curry meteorites. Well, here is some of the crap that he is personally selling... http://www.ebay.com/sch/uncometeorites/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562 ... and if you have been reading the thread on Curry, you will realize that he has managed to find other people and businesses in the Western part of the state of Colorado to start selling his junk, both on EBay and in brick and mortar stores. I say some of his junk in a rock shop just 3 weeks ago, in Cimarron, Colorado. The store owner wanted 3000 dollars for a 30 gram iron which looked like a cleaned Nantan. Curry's certificate claim the piece was park of the Montrose Iron fall, which of course doesn't exist. Since the meteorite list is for discussing meteorites, and it's not unusual for the topic of meteor wrongs to come up on the list, I don't know why you would complain about people using bandwidth to discuss Curry and his sludge? Maybe this doesn't idiot Curry doesn't effect you. But it's certainly a black spot on meteorite sellers and collectors, especially ones in Colorado. It's hard enough to sell real meteorites to the general public. Many are not even aware that private individuals can own such material, and when presented with a meteorite, many guffaw and claim how did you get a real meteorite or something similar. Last summer I had about 200 grams of UNWA's in a display at a very popular rock shop up here in the Colorado Rockies, a shop frequented by a lot of summer tourists, and we couldn't move a single gram, mainly because customers would scoff at them, claiming they can't be real. When I started collecting over 10 years ago, I was amazed that something as wonderful as a meteorite could actually be legally owned by myself. People like Curry don't help the situation, not at any time. For me, this is local, for you, this is far removed. Re: [meteorite-list] Curry Montrose Meteorites and Walter L. Newton
Adam, Definitely worth a try, but what can you present to show you own an NWA official number as intellectual property. Can a Nom Com official meteorite name be trademarked, and does anybody own anything once it is published in the scientific literature? There should be some marketing rights as you suggest, but I think they would be limited to an argument of defamation of all authentic vendors of NWA 5K, in the sense of potentially libelous statements that are not properly researched with the intent to draw sales away from NWA 5K, if I understand your unwanted predicament. Come to think of it NWA 5K is a trademarkable product, but probably not with the number 5000 which is public domain. I have never seen a dealer trademark a meteorite in this way, but why not? It would allow claims beyond the basics and in some instance could be a useful marketing tool. At the moment, though, it looks like NWA 5K is not trademarked, though this might give some dealers ideas on how to distinguish their noteworthy products: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=loginp_lang=englishp_d=trmk Walter - As I mentioned before I have nothing further to say in the solutions department than already posted, and if that doesn't work for you - good luck in finding something constructive to do that will solve this problem that seems to have caused many unnecessary frustrations in the meteorite community. [meteorite-list] AD-Stunning New Eucrite, Diogenite meteorites
Aloha listoids, I am pleased to announce a pair of new HED meteorites that I am sure you will find quite interesting. NWA 6927 diogenite. A lot of 5 freshly crusted stones weighing 114g was purchased from a Moroccan dealer in March 2011. The meteorite was professionally cut and prepared by Montana Meteorite Laboratory and a sample submitted to Dr Tony Irving for analysis toward classification. This is a beautiful representation of a fresh diogenite, featuring stunning orthopyroxene crystals throughout a matrix speckled with abundant chromite and nickel-iron inclusions. Full slices of this meteorite have a polished finish on one side and come in a quality labeled large display box for protection and years of viewing pleasure. Scale cube is 1cm on each side and not included in the sale. NWA 6927 is available now on a first come, first served basis. http://bigkahuna-meteorites.com/NWA6927.html NWA 6928 NORITIC DIOGENITE. At first glance this specimen was thought to be an unbrecciated basaltic eucrite, but after additional O isotope analysis, Dr Tony Irving believes that this is a rare specimen related to diogenites, as in fact one of only three known noritic diogenites. Scientists at University of Washington, among other research institutes, have been involved in a revision of the terminology for diogenites, expanding them from typical varieties (now called orthopyroxenitic diogenites) to harzburgitic diogenites (what we used to call olivine diogenites) and dunitic diogenites (like NWA 2968 and NWA 5784), and even to those with 10% plagioclase (logically noritic diogenites). NWA 6928 can in no way be a eucrite, because the pyroxene is not pigeonite, but instead orthopyroxene (with a composition way more magnesian and in the range for diogenites). Inclusions of chromite are present, and exhibits similar evidence for shock (undulose extinction, cataclasis) to tha t seen typically in (orthopyroxenitic) diogenites. Dr Irving has conferred with Dr Ted Bunch on this analysis, who concurs. There is no doubt this is an intriguing new meteorite, but until I receive the formal report from Dr Irving, all sales of NWA 6928 are suspended (previous sales will be honored). In the meantime, to whet your appetite for this rare and intriguing new meteorite, here are pictures of the uncut stone and polished slice: NWA 6928 uncut stone http://bigkahuna-meteorites.com/Images/NWA6928-MMa.jpg NWA 6928 polished slice http://bigkahuna-meteorites.com/Images/NWA6928-7.79a.jpg Thanks for looking and have a great day! Re: [meteorite-list] Curry Montrose Meteorites and Walter L. Newton
Hi Greg C If you wanted to market a meteorite, and trademark it: Let's say you have NWA 6658 and wanted to distinguish your product because you held a huge mass of it and were heavily invested. While I am totally in agreement with your thought about the official scientific literature name assignment as I posted before too, a trademark need not be the exact nomcom assignment. You could enjoy all the benefits of a trademarked meteorite name for example if you registered MES-6658, which is not a scientific name but rather your assigned commercial name. I am not trying to be a marketing department here so forgive me if the names aren't sexy enough that I use for illustration. If Haag, for example, wishes to market his Esquel like this, there is no reason I see why he couldn't trademark PerEsquel (and allow his customers to use the name as well) or some better thought out name to emphasize he is a major supplier of it and it cvontains precious stones - peridots. I have mixed feelings about such trademarking, but in some cases it could make sense. [meteorite-list] Kenya Greenhouse Hammer Stone Kits - AD
Dear List, I would like to introduce my latest project that I have been working on the last four days, Greenhouse Hammer Stone Kits from the July 16, 2011 meteorite fall in Mwana Wikio, Kenya. These kits include a fragment from the 001 or 002 stones along with a piece of greenhouse roof material from which these stones struck. I would also like to offer the reassembled Greenhouse 002 stone as a single offering of the six main pieces that have a combined weight of 322 grams. If I do not receive an offer that meets my minimum for the six pieces within a couple days, I will offer the pieces individually, also at the same per-gram rate. If you are interested in the reassembled mass, or any of the six main pieces, please email me for the prices, or feel free to make offers on the reassembled mass or individual pieces. I made a small number of Large and Small kits which will have a set price. Here is the complete list of what is currently available, I hope you enjoy these as much as I have creating them! Re: [meteorite-list] laboratory analysis or authentication tests by IMCA.
Hello all, No, I am sorry but the IMCA does not have a lab, and does not do classification. However we are extremely lucky that so many of our brightest scientists are willing to drop whatever they are doing to look at any questionable rocks we send to them, we will never thank them enough. Also, this specimen is tiny, one single milligram!!! I am not sure something that small could be identified with any degree of certainty. Aug. 31, 2011 George H. Diller Kennedy Space Center, Fla. 321-867-2468 george.h.dil...@nasa.gov STATUS REPORT: ELV-083111 EXPENDABLE LAUNCH VEHICLE STATUS REPORT Spacecraft: GRAIL (Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory) Launch Vehicle: Delta II 7920 Heavy Launch Site: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. Launch Pad: Space Launch Complex 17B Launch Date: Sept. 8, 2011 Launch Times: 8:37:06 a.m. and 9:16:12 a.m. EDT GRAIL was moved from the Astrotech payload processing facility in Titusville to Pad 17B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Aug. 18 and hoisted atop the Delta II rocket. The encapsulation into the payload fairing was performed on Aug. 23. Wednesday, the spacecraft was powered on for final testing. Also on Wednesday, the Flight Readiness Review was held and at its conclusion a tentative go was given for fueling the Delta II rocket Sept. 1 and 2. GRAIL's primary science objectives are to determine the structure of the lunar interior, from crust to core, and to advance understanding of the thermal evolution of the moon. Spacecraft: NPP (NPOESS Preparatory Project) Launch Vehicle: Delta II 7920 Launch Site: Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. Launch Pad: Space Launch Complex 2 Launch Date: Oct. 25, 2011 Launch Window: 2:48:01 a.m. - 2:57:11 a.m. PDT (9 min., 10 sec.) Orbital Altitude: 512 miles The NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) spacecraft arrived at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Aug. 30 as scheduled. Removal of the satellite from its environmentally controlled shipping container now is under way. At Space Launch Complex 2, the Delta II rocket first stage was hoisted into position on the pad July 20. The nine solid rocket boosters were attached between July 28 and Aug. 1. The second stage was hoisted atop the first stage on Aug. 2. Testing of the launch vehicle continues. NPP represents a critical first step in building the next-generation of Earth-observing satellites. NPP will carry the first of the new sensors developed for this satellite fleet, now known as the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) to be launched in 2016. NPP is the bridge between NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites and the forthcoming series of JPSS satellites. The mission will test key technologies and instruments for the JPSS missions. Spacecraft: Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity) Launch Vehicle: Atlas V-541 (AV-028) Launch Site: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. Launch Pad: Space Launch Complex 41 Launch Date: Nov. 25, 2011 Launch Time: 10:21 a.m. EST At Kennedy Space Center, functional testing of Curiosity is finished. Work has been completed to stow the rover's components, including the remote sensing mast, robotic arm, wheels and mobility system. The rover has now been rotated to wheels up in preparation for integration with the other Mars Science Laboratory components. The Atlas V rocket for the mission is at the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The Atlas and Centaur stages are undergoing initial checkout before being transported to Launch Complex 41. The Atlas stage will be transported to the Vertical Integration Facility on Sept. 8 and followed by the Centaur on Sept. 9. This is an Atlas V-541 configuration that will have four solid rocket boosters attached. The rover's 10 science instruments will search for signs of life, including methane, and help determine if the gas is from a biological or geological source. The unique rover will use a laser to look inside rocks and release the gasses so that its spectrometer can analyze and send the data back to Earth.
