[meteorite-list] Russia to Restart Planetary Exploration with Mars Probe (Phobos-Grunt)

2011-11-08 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n/07phobosgrunt/

Russia to restart planetary exploration with Mars probe
BY STEPHEN CLARK
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
November 7, 2011

Russia will launch a probe to a moon of Mars on Tuesday, resuming the
country's exploration of the solar system after funding woes and mission
failures hindered progress over the last two decades.

The ambitious Phobos-Grunt mission, first conceived in the 1990s, will
attempt to enter orbit around Mars, land on the Red Planet's
potato-shaped moon Phobos, collect samples and return to Earth.

Grunt means soil in Russian.

Russia has tried to land on Phobos before, but two probes launched in
1988 failed before they reached their goal. The failure, coupled with
another embarrassing Mars mission malfunction in 1996, spelled the
decline of the Russian planetary exploration program until now.

Liftoff is scheduled for 2016:03 GMT (3:16:03 p.m. EST) Tuesday aboard a
Zenit 2FG rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. After a
nine-minute ascent into Earth orbit powered by the two-stage Zenit
booster, the payload's main propulsion unit will fire twice to aim
toward Mars.

The spacecraft's rocket system is based on the Fregat upper stage, a
restartable hydrazine-fueled device often used to place satellites into
high-altitude orbits around Earth.

Phobos-Grunt should be on course to Mars following the propulsion unit's
second firing at 0120 GMT Wednesday (8:20 p.m. EST Tuesday), according
to Roscosmos, the Russian space agency.

Loaded with propellant, a Chinese orbiter and scientific experiments,
the intricate spacecraft weighs in at 29,000 pounds.

It reach Mars in October 2012 and fire its rocket pack once more to
slide into orbit around the Red Planet. Then the craft will jettison the
propulsion unit and deploy China's Yinghuo 1 orbiter, which rides
piggyback on Phobos-Grunt for the journey there.

By early 2013, Phobos-Grunt will approach Phobos and study the moon with
remote sensing instruments, giving Russian scientists data needed to
select a landing site.

Using a laser altimeter and radar navigation sensor, Phobos-Grunt is
expected to descend to the surface of the moon in February 2013. Because
of the weak gravity field at Phobos, the probe must make a gentle
landing with little margin for error.

After scooping up rock with a robot arm and placing the samples in a
canister, Phobos-Grunt's return capsule will depart the moon and target
a landing back on Earth in August 2014 with nearly a half-pound of soil.

After sending its samples back to Earth, Phobos-Grunt's core spacecraft
will remain on Phobos for a continued science mission for up to a year.

Any one of these critical stages goes wrong, and the whole mission is
compromised, said Francis Rocard, the manager of solar system
exploration at CNES, the French space agency.

In addition to its partnership with China, Russia is also receiving help
from Ukraine, France and other European countries.

Phobos-Grunt also carries a payload from the Planetary Society, the U.S.
space advocacy group. The Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment, or
LIFE, will demonstrate whether microorganisms can survive long-term
space journeys, testing an important part of the transpermia hypothesis,
which states that life can travel between planets inside rocks.

Russia hopes to pull off the Phobos-Grunt project for $163 million, a
bargain in today's world of multi-billion dollar space missions. NASA's
blueprint for bringing back samples from the surface of Mars could cost
up to $10 billion, according to some estimates.

But Phobos is easier to reach than the Martian surface, and scientists
believe the moon's rocky exterior could harbor material blasted away
from the Red Planet by violent asteroid or comet impacts.

Soil from Phobos could tell scientists not only about Mars, but also how
the planet's two asteroid-like moons formed. Scientists say Phobos and
Deimos, the smaller of the two, could be asteroids captured by Martian
gravity or could have been ejected from Mars by an impact long ago.

The oddball Phobos is scarred by craters and fractures and measures 16
miles across on its longest axis.

Phobos-Grunt mission will mark Russia's return to interplanetary
exploration after a 15-year hiatus following the failure of another Mars
launch in 1996. That mission, named Mars 96, fell back to Earth after a
launch failure in November 1996.

The former Soviet Union achieved a series of milestones in
interplanetary exploration, including the first successful landing of a
robotic probe on another planet with a mission to Venus in 1970. The
Soviet space program also returned samples from the moon with a series
of unmanned missions.

Christian died in a car crash, much too early, much too young!

If you succeed in retrieving pics of his last Vienna museum
visit, Matteo, I would very strongly suggest that you put his
name as a (c) to them and, may be, as an act of integrity, you
also ask his widow before publishing them, if you are able to
somehow reach her. Unfortunately I don´t have her address at
hands, but may be someone can help out here.

Christian was a very fine guy, and a truly dedicated collector!
I, and some other list members here, had the great pleasure of

[meteorite-list] White House: No Evidence That ETs Have Reached Out To Touch Us -- Or Even Exist

White House: No Evidence That ETs Have Reached Out To Touch Us -- Or Even
Exist

There's no evidence of any extraterrestrial life and no credible
information to suggest that any evidence is being hidden from the public's
eye.

And there you have it, straight from the White House's mouth, so to speak.
UFO aficionados, skeptics and believers alike have waited patiently since
September to see how the Obama administration would respond to two petitions
under the new We the People program.

According to the official response written and released Friday evening by
Phil Larson at the White House Office of Science Technology Policy, while
the government is saying it has no evidence that any life exists outside
our planet, or that an extraterrestrial presence has contacted or engaged
any member of the human race, the door is still open to the possibility and
search efforts of life outside our planet.

And those efforts include the ongoing Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence -- or SETI -- which uses ground-based telescopes to try and
tune in to signals from another world.

Larson's response also mentions the Kepler spacecraft in Earth's orbit,
searching for Earth-like planets, and the upcoming Mars Science Laboratory,
a car-size vehicle that will explore the geology of the red planet to look
for any of the building blocks of life.

Undoubtedly, the minions who believe that Earth has already been visited by
at least one race of extraterrestrials -- citing photographic, film, video
tape, radar returns and landing traces as evidence -- will surely be
disappointed with the White House's no evidence stance.

Steven Bassett, who penned the first alien disclosure petition in September,
isn't satisfied with the White House response and has announced on his
Paradigm Research Group site his intention of filing another petition.

The [White House] response was unacceptable. Much feedback is likely. PRG
will begin to pre-promote a new petition relevant to the Disclosure process
... and will continue to keep the Disclosure issue front and center within
this attempt at participatory democracy by the Obama administration,
Bassett wrote.

If someone, like Bassett, isn't happy with the response given by the Obama
administration, he or she can turn right around and file a new petition with
no restrictions.

There's no reason someone couldn't submit a second petition, White House
spokesman Matt Lehrich told The Huffington Post in an e-mail Monday. If it
crosses the threshold [of 25,000 signatures], it will get a response.
Obviously, if the petition is very similar, it may garner a similar
response.

Any backlash to the White House ET response will most likely come from
people and organizations who will point to the thousands of pages of
previously classified government documents about UFOs -- many of which
clearly indicate that some UFO encounters with military forces and airline
pilots in the past were considered so important that they weren't disclosed
to the public.

Of course, anything in the sky that can't be identified is a UFO. Experts,
government officials and military personnel have often been unable to
explain away sightings. That doesn't prove the existence of ETs, but it
convinces many that we are not alone in the universe.

They have got bases all over the world now, you know. They've been coming
here ever since 1946 when the scientists first started bouncing radar beams
off of the moon. And they have been living and working among us in vast
quantities ever since. The government knows all about 'em.

Well, they are people just like us, from within our own solar system. Except
that their society is more highly evolved. I mean, they don't have no wars,
they got no monetary system, they don't have any leaders because I mean each
man is a leader. I mean each man ... because of their technology they are
able to feed, clothe, house and transport themselves equally and with no
effort.

Why don't they reveal themselves to us is because if they did it would cause
a general panic. Now, I mean, we still have leaders upon whom we rely for
the release this information. These leaders have decided to repress this
information because of the tremendous shock that it would cause to our
antiquated systems. Now, the result of this has been that the Venusians have
contacted people at all walks of life, all walks of life.

It would be a devastating blow to our antiquated systems. So now Venusians
are meeting with people in all walks of life in an advisory capacity. For
once, man will have a god-like control over his own destiny. He will have a
chance to transcend and to evolve with some equality for all.

Re: [meteorite-list] White House: No Evidence That ETs Have Reached Out To Touch Us -- Or Even Exist

2011-11-08 Thread cdtucson
Phil,
Good one.
It is sometimes difficult to prove some things exist. Even if they do. The way
they can doctor pictures and video these days I imagine the proof bar is
pretty high these days in the ET debate. Looks like we're going to need an
actual body at this point.
And take God for example. Believers think the world is all the proof you need
whereas disbelievers cannot prove he doesn't exist.
If there is life elsewhere one might expect it to be on the moon.
I mean they say the moon was once part of Earth. If that is so then why is
there no life there? Earth has life almost everywhere and yet the moon has none
anywhere. This not only adds to the other discredits of the origin of the moon
theory but, it does equally the life elsewhere theory. The moon even has the
same oxygen and it is also not flat. Yes, we can prove the Earth is not flat.
Although each theory has it's own circular argument. Neither one will ever
prove or disprove the other.
Because we were not there when the moon formed and we have yet to find a shred
of life elsewhere. Not even a peep (SETI) .
And to say there must be life out there is the same argument stated about
God. There must be a God.
In any event I think Earth is great. God or chance did something right.
2 more cents,
Carl

space agency classified the asteroid as a potentially hazardous
object. Asteroid to pass close to EarthIf the asteroid were to crash into
Earth, it could cause a 4,000 megaton blast and a magnitude 7.0 earthquake,
according to scientists at Purdue University. If it fell into the ocean, it
could cause a 70-foot high tsunami within 60 miles of the crash site, the
experts said.Podcast: Asteroid close encounterHowever, the space rock, called
Asteroid 2005 YU55, poses no threat of an Earth collision, according to NASA's

radar antennas in California's Mojave Desert. Goldstone antennas are very
sensitive radio telescopes used to investigate quasars, radar mapping of
planets and comets.Astronomer: No need to worry about this oneScientists plan
to reconstruct the shape of the asteroid with a resolution as fine as 13 feet

Russia launched launch a probe to a moon of Mars at 2016 GMT
(3:16 p.m. EST) Tuesday, resuming the country's exploration of the
solar system after funding woes and mission failures hindered progress
over the last two decades. A rocket pack should place the Phobos-Grunt
sample return mission on course to the Red Planet by 0120 GMT
(8:20 p.m. EST).

[meteorite-list] NASA Releases Radar Movie of Asteroid 2005 YU55

2011-11-08 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2011-346

NASA Releases Radar Movie of Asteroid 2005 YU55
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
November 08, 2011

PASADENA, Calif. -- Scientists working with the 230-foot-wide (70-meter)
Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif., have generated a short
movie clip of asteroid 2005 YU55. The images were generated from data
collected at Goldstone on Nov. 7, 2011, between 11:24 a.m. and 1:35 p.m.
PST (2:24 p.m. and 4:35 p.m. EST). They are the highest-resolution
images ever generated by radar of a near-Earth object.

The short movie clip can be found at: http://1.usa.gov/uVJvmS_ .

Each of the six frames required 20 minutes of data collection by the
Goldstone radar. At the time, 2005 YU55 was approximately 860,000 miles
(1.38 million kilometers) away from Earth. Resolution is 4 meters per
pixel.

The movie shows the small subset of images obtained at Goldstone on
November 7 that have finished processing. By animating a sequence of
radar images, we can see more surface detail than is visible otherwise,
said radar astronomer Lance Benner, the principal investigator for the
2005 YU55 observations, from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena, Calif. The animation reveals a number of puzzling structures
on the surface that we don't yet understand. To date, we've seen less
than one half of the surface, so we expect more surprises.

The trajectory of asteroid 2005 YU55 is well understood. At the point of
closest approach today at 3:28 p.m. PST (6:28 p.m. EST/2328 UTC), it was
no closer than 201,700 miles (324,600 kilometers), as measured from the
center of Earth. The gravitational influence of the asteroid will have
no detectable effect on anything here on Earth, including our planet's
tides or tectonic plates. Although 2005 YU55 is in an orbit that
regularly brings it to the vicinity of Earth (and Venus and Mars), the
2011 encounter with Earth is the closest this space rock has come for at
least the last 200 years.

The last time a space rock as big came as close to Earth was in 1976,
although astronomers did not know about the flyby at the time. The next
known approach of an asteroid this large will be in 2028.

NASA detects, tracks and characterizes asteroids and comets passing
close to Earth using both ground- and space-based telescopes. The
Near-Earth Object Observations Program, commonly called Spaceguard,
discovers these objects, characterizes a subset of them, and plots their
orbits to determine if any could be potentially hazardous to our planet.

JPL manages the Near-Earth Object Program Office for NASA's Science
Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California
Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

[meteorite-list] Battered Tharsis Tholus Volcano on Mars (Mars Express)

2011-11-08 Thread Ron Baalke

Battered Tharsis Tholus volcano on Mars
European Space Agency
8 November 2011

[Image}
The latest image released from Mars Express reveals a large extinct
volcano that has been battered and deformed over the aeons.

By Earthly standards, Tharsis Tholus is a giant, towering 8 km above the
surrounding terrain, with a base stretching over 155 x 125 km. Yet on
Mars, it is just an average-sized volcano. What marks it out as unusual
is its battered condition.

Shown here in images taken by the HRSC high-resolution stereo camera on
ESA's Mars Express spacecraft, the volcanic edifice has been marked by
dramatic events.

At least two large sections have collapsed around its eastern and
western flanks during its four-billion-year history and these
catastrophes are now visible as scarps up to several kilometres high.

The main feature of Tharsis Tholus is, however, the caldera in its centre.

It has an almost circular outline, about 32 x 34 km, and is ringed by
faults that have allowed the caldera floor to subside by as much as 2.7
km.

[Image}
Tharsis Tholus in context

It is thought that the volcano emptied its magma chamber during
eruptions and, as the lava ran out onto the surface, the chamber roof
was no longer able to support its own weight.

So, the volcano collapsed, forming the large caldera.

November is a busy month for Mars exploration: Russia and NASA both plan
launches this month.

Russia's Phobos-Soil (formerly known as Phobos-Grunt) is designed to
land on Phobos, the larger of Mars' two moons, to collect samples, and
return them to Earth in 2014. It also carries the first Chinese
spacecraft to Mars, Yinghuo-1.

Mars Express HRSC digital elevation models of Phobos were used by
Russian scientists to assess the mission's potential landing sites and
ESA is also providing telecommunications support for both Phobos-Soil
and Yinghuo-1.

In return, the European scientific community will have access to data
obtained by both spacecraft.

NASA's mission is the Mars Science Laboratory, a large rover known as
Curiosity, with experiments designed to detect organic molecules - past
or present - on the Red Planet.

Also worth noting is the simulated Mars mission, Mars500, which ended on
Friday when the hatch was opened for the first time since June 2010. For
520 days, the international crew had been working in a simulated
spacecraft in Moscow.
