[meteorite-list] Ernest Weidhaus re visited

2011-11-19 Thread Martin Goff
Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies but there doesnt seem to be much info out
there on Ernest Weidhaus or at least he is not a commonly know name
within the meteorite community. This is what i have so far:

He was a member of the New York Mineralogical Club and joined in 1919.
He collected minerals, meteorites and coins.
He sold his entire meteorite collection to Oscar Monnig in April 1939.

That is pretty much it. The reason i am trying to find out more is
that i have a specimen of Ensisheim from the Monnig collection that
originated from the Weidhaus collection (no Weidhaus label though) and
am just trying to possibly find out how Ernest Weidhaus came across a
specimen of Ensisheim and from where?

Anyone out there with any other info at all?

Cheers

Martin

Re: [meteorite-list] Ernest Weidhaus re visited

2011-11-19 Thread MexicoDoug

Hi Martin

Since George Kunz was the President who admitted Weidhaus into the NY
club and Kunz was interested and published in meteorites and
contributed to the recovery of several, and made many trades; and much
of his meteorite collection ended up in the American Museum of Natural
History, same place where the Club met. It would be pretty likely that
he could have gotten it from Kunz who not only worked with Tiffany's
but also traded with museums and was curator at AMNH. So if you can
trace any old Ensisheim pieces in the AMNH you'll have a chance to get
back to the same source. Good luck!

from the AMNH website:

http://research.amnh.org/eps/collections/meteorites
(the whole story is on the website including a reference to a 1935
catalog that someone must have or at least a reproduction)

The importance of the collection was dramatically heightened in 1900
by the purchase of the Clarence S. Bement mineral collection through
the generosity of J. P. Morgan. Besides containing 12,000 of the finest
mineral specimens ever known, the collection included 580 meteorite
specimens representing nearly 500 different falls and finds. This
established the AMNH meteorite collection as one of the great
collections of the world, and this has been maintained over the years
by continual additions. Bement began collecting meteorites in the early
1800's, but his interest waxed and waned. He often purchased and
exchanged meteorites with George Kunz, the famed mineral and gem expert
who worked at Tiffany's for over 50 years and was an honorary curator
at the Museum for 14 years. Kunz had an active interest in meteorites
and from 1885 to 1891 described numerous meteorites from the United
States.

[meteorite-list] Extreme Canada Mail Slow Down

2011-11-19 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi List,

Has anyone else noticed that mail to and from Canada has been
excruciatingly slow since the Canadian postal strike a few months
back?

Prior to the strike, a package mailed via First Class International
took an average of 10-12 business days to arrive. After the strike,
this has become 21-30 days. The same can be said for packages coming
from Canada into the US. The last two packages I had coming from
Canada have been agonizingly slow. The first took a full month to get
here and I am still waiting on a package that was mailed over 3 weeks
ago. This is killing me, because there is something in that package I
really need, and I am tired of checking my PO box to see aggravating
emptiness staring back at me when I open it.

After this latest package arrives (if it arrives at all), I am firing
off a letter to Canada Post and USPS and telling them to get their act
together. There is no excuse for this, especially from USPS where
they get 100 days off a year for Arbor Day, St. Swivens Day, and every
odd-numbered day that starts with a T. (Can you tell I am PISSED?)
LOL

I understand that the strike may have backlogged our northern
neighbors, but it has been months since the strike and this is getting
downright silly and inexcusable. Is this the new norm now? Are we
ever going to see reasonable delivery times again? Is this some new
secret policy to force frustrated people into paying more for Priority
or Express service? Are Canadian workers being spiteful because all
of their terms were not met during the strike? What the heck is going
on? Or do I just have rotten luck?

Also, it seems that USPS is to blame as well, because packages I am
mailing north are taking longer as well. I've had a couple seem to go
AWOL and then suddenly show up right before I was about to refund the
customer's money or ship a replacement.

If this keeps up, I am going to start sending all packages to Canada
via Registered Mail and passing along the increased cost to the
customer. That way, at least I can get decent tracking of where the
package is at.

Best regards,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Need some input!

2011-11-19 Thread Warren Sansoucie

Hello List -

Rex Scates and I are building some new cases designed specifically for
meteorite display and storage. These are cases made from aluminum with glass
and they are sealed to keep the outside environment away from your specimen.
This will help with humidity issues. There will be hygrometers placed in some
of them as well as areas to house silicates for added security.

I have already constructed some custom cases, they can be viewed on my facebook
page. You can find me on there at Warren Sansoucie. Just send a friend request
if needed.

What we need from all of you is some serious input. Before we go into
production, we need to know everyone's desires on dimensions. What size case
would you want if it were available? How deep would you like it to be?

I can manufacture any size here in my own shop but we need to understand what
generic sizes would be best to mass produce for everyone to enjoy. So please
email Rex or myself at warren3...@hotmail.com or rexsca...@comcast.net .

We would really appreciate some input.

There will be customization available. Custom made spring loaded struts for the
lid. Pressurized models filled with an inert gas.Back lit case mods for
pallasites. You can see an example of a back lit Brahin display on my facebook
as well. The case was built for Rick Thompson's specimen.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Mike:

I have to agree with you the Canada Post System(?) is unreliable at
best. At worst nothing arrives at all. We complain but nothing happens. The
government arbitrator was so annoyed he quit. Even mail with tracking
can go astray so Registered may not help.

Hang in there as Christmas is coming and service does get better for a
wee bit at least.

I too have been struggling with the design of a dry meteorite display, and
would very much like to see your solutions. Don’t have a Facebook account

Could please you make your photos viewable for non-Facebook members too?

This is my solution in (also) sealed glass and aluminium (including

It works perfectly! Not for sale, but free for everybody to copy.

Hi MikeG and List,

It is a shame things have come to this. There was a lot of wisdom in the old
prohibition of collective bargaining and unionization of critical service
employees. History has shown that placing this kind of power in the hands of a
force that can act on politicians re-election chances has never been good for
anyone.

Take note, that we here in the United States will soon be suffering the same

Hi Count Guido,

Hasn't that happened yet for Priority Mail? I thought all non-area
Priority Mail packages were handled by Fedex already. Nothing sacred
aboput the USPS in my opinion, I'd rather see them out of business and
back up running with a different business model.

These days most of what they deliver is junk mail to tip off crooks
when you're out of town and unfortunately they don't have a do not
spam me filter. If they wanted to earn their keep instead of fighting
everything tooth and nail, they'd automate the scanning of images of
all of our mail and send it to our email inbox and allow us to check
off what they should destroy or return to the sender instead.

Instead, they weigh down local landfills, recycle bins and providing
people with sensitive financial account numbers, addresses and other
key information from banks that are sending the latest super mortgage
yourself to the hilt, take this or that cash advance on these
unsolicited checks we have the nerve to send you; stc., that when not
properly shredded is breeding ground for other identity thieves.

Really not rocket science and if they weren't counting on delivering
all that trash for keeping them afloat financially and supplying
recycle programs enough trash to say look how much we've recycled' ,
we're saving the planet; it would be a good idea.

Kindest wishes
Doug

[meteorite-list] Statistically Speaking

2011-11-19 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi all,

I know there are a lot of people on this forum that know meteorite
statistics way better than I do. So I thought I'd ask for a little
help.
In a week or two I'll be doing an interview for a brand new TV Show
about stats - my episode will obviously be about meteorite statistics.
With any luck these questions will go to a scientist (and not me) and
I can just concentrate on the hunting aspect - which is why I'll
really be there.

Here are a few basic questions that I should probably know. But
I'm not sure if I do. So, if you're feeling like helping - send me an
email with the correct answers.

1. Q. How many meteorites hit the ground per year?
A. On average about 1 per square mile per thousand years. About
20,000 to 40,000 per year.

2. Q. Has anyone ever been hit by a meteorite?
A. I only know of Ann Hodges - Sylacauga, Alabama, USA

3. Q. Has any animal ever been hit by a meteorite?
A. I'm not sure... there are stories of a dog and a cow being hit...but?

4. Q. How often does a city ending meteorite (think Canyon Diablo)
strike the earth?
A. ?

5. Q. Has any animal ever found a meteorite?
A. Sorry, I just threw that one in to see if you were paying
attentionlol

6. Q. How much in weight does the earth gain per year by all the
meteorites that enter our atmosphere? Including all, from tiny grain
of sand meteorites to large bunker-busters.
A. No clue..

Re: [meteorite-list] Statistically Speaking

2011-11-19 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Ruben and List,

I'll take a layman's stab at this -

 1. Q. How many meteorites hit the ground per year?
 A. On average about 1 per square mile per thousand years. About
 20,000 to 40,000 per year.

Can't really help on this one. Although I do recall a similar
question was asked recently on this list. I don't remember what the
answer was, but someone provided a web link.

 2. Q. Has anyone ever been hit by a meteorite?
 A. I only know of Ann Hodges - Sylacauga, Alabama, USA

Ms. Hodges is the only well-documented case. Supposedly a young boy
was struck by a small stone from the Mbale fall. It hit a banana tree
and then hit him. There is even a photo out there of the boy holding
the meteorite.

 3. Q. Has any animal ever been hit by a meteorite?
 A. I'm not sure... there are stories of a dog and a cow being hit...but?

Rob Wesel is more qualified to answer the Nakhla dog question, but it
is generally accepted that this story is apocryphal and never really
happened. There is a better documented case of a meteorite striking
and killing a horse or cow, but I don't recall the name of the
meteorite. Captain Blood probably knows.

 4. Q. How often does a city ending meteorite (think Canyon Diablo)
 strike the earth?
 A. ?

I recall hearing a number around every 40,000 years or so, but I don't
remember where I heard it.

 5. Q. Has any animal ever found a meteorite?
 A. Sorry, I just threw that one in to see if you were paying
 attentionlol

I heard a story about a handsome guy with a talented dog... ;)

 6. Q. How much in weight does the earth gain per year by all the
meteorites that enter our atmosphere? Including all, from tiny grain
of sand meteorites to large bunker-busters.
 A. No clue..

There is a solid figure out there for this one, but I don't remember
what exactly it is. I do remember that the figure is measured in
hundreds or thousands of tons, mostly in form of dust.

Not very helpful, but there you have it. LOL

Best regards,

MikeG

Are you looking at the planet or ground only? 2/3 of the planet is
water.
I think I'll let rob Matson or Sterling answer that one.

2. Q. Has anyone ever been hit by a meteorite?
A. I only know of Ann Hodges - Sylacauga, Alabama, USA

A young boy was hit lightly by a Mbale fragment ricochet off a tree.
There were others but mostly fiction.

3. Q. Has any animal ever been hit by a meteorite?
A. I'm not sure... there are stories of a dog and a cow being hit...but?

Valera did kill a cow. New Concord might have kill a young horse, but
not verifiable, and the Nakhla dog is most likely fiction.

4. Q. How often does a city ending meteorite (think Canyon Diablo)
strike the earth?
A. ?
How often? I don't know (Sterling) but Sikhote-Alin could have
done a lot of damage if it had impacted a city. And how big does it have to
be to be a city?

5. Q. Has any animal ever found a meteorite?
A. Sorry, I just threw that one in to see if you were paying
attentionlol

You are on your own on that one.

6. Q. How much in weight does the earth gain per year by all the
meteorites that enter our atmosphere? Including all, from tiny grain
of sand meteorites to large bunker-busters.
A. No clue..

Anne, I think that's a good point about Sikhote Alin as it would have

Greg, I am well aware of how some producers try to get answers that
are sensationalistic - truth is often secondary.

  Hey Ruben,

I was looking at your questions and I thought about something I read in
Rocks From Space, by O. Richard Norton. At the beginning of chapter 17, page
307 to be exact, he refers to a Canadian study where they estimated that there
should be about 10 meteorites currently existing for every square mile of land.
He goes into the details of how they came up with that number. Check it out.
I hope this will help you.

  A. No clue..

[meteorite-list] Valera - documentation?

2011-11-19 Thread MexicoDoug

Dear List;

I have a question about the cow killing incident.

The meteorite fell in 1972. I understand from rumors that it is
absolutely a confirmed cow killer. But the document doesn't read as an
absolute fact, but rather circumstantial evidence (which as a meteorite
collector appreciating the size of the mass I want to believe quite
strong).

The affidavit was signed in 2001, after the Doctor on whose property
the meteorite landed had died.

Yet when I heard this, it was explained to me that a doctor had
pronounced the cow dead and there was injury visible on the cow caused
by the falling mass (a 50 kg stone). I always thought that a Doctor
actually swore to the wound on the cow and was convinced it was caused
by the stone, since a doctor would be expected to have a good idea of
what such a wound would look like.

This thread just prompted me to me read the affidavit. It doesn't say
anything about wounds on the cow.

The affidavit was by the Doctor's visitor, and specifically does not
even mention that the doctor made any opinion about the meteorite
killing the cow. But does mention the doctor had owned the property
and passed away subsequently. No one from the Doctor's family, just
the visitor, Juan Dionicio, commenting 30 years later says it
appeared (presumably him since he doesn't mention the doctor) the cow
was killed by the rock when he saw it the next day. It does not
mention any injuries or wounds to the cow at all. Just it appeared
the cow had been killed by the rock and also that the cow then
eaten.

Yet I heard at the time I bought this that the cow had sustained a
mortal injury the injury I recall being described at one point. Why
this is not in the document? ... has me thinking something must be
missing?

Is this the only document that discusses the claim of a cow being
killed? Because it seems to me people have much more information than
is contained in the affidavit. (But I've run up enough against rumors
to believe that it's easily possible for the rumors to just be taller
tales down the line). Was there a newspaper article in the 70's or
anything predating this, or were there any other witnesses besides Juan
Dionicio, the mysterious guest who it sounds spent several nights on
the good doctor's ranch? I'd really like to know.

Kindest wishes
Doug
