Re: [meteorite-list] Internet Censorship

2012-01-07 Thread Michael Blood
For those that are not aware, there is currently a bill being proposed
In congress to censor the internet. It is not to protect exploited children,
It is specifically designed to CONTROL and censor what can and cannot
Be on the internet in terms of free trade, etc. Like all such conglomerate
Attempts, it is couched as representing something other than it truly is.
If, like I, you cherish one last bastion of freedom, protect the
internet as a hands off FREE ZONE of information and free enterprise:
Dear Friend,

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is at the forefront of efforts to pass the
Internet Censorship Act, which fundamentally threatens the internet as we
know it.

If the bill passes, corporate copyright holders would be able to demand the
government shut down a website based on nothing more than an allegation that
the website contains copyrighted material. And the government could do this
even without a court order.

The free speech implications of this kind of extra-judicial government
censorship of the internet is chilling. It's nothing short of an outright
attack on our free internet.

Google, which is strongly opposed to the Internet Censorship Act and has an
unofficial motto of Don't be evil, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
But the Chamber's all-out support of this incredibly dangerous legislation
has reportedly caused Google to consider quitting the rightwing organization
in protest.

I told Google to quit the Chamber of Commerce, and I hope you will too. You
can learn more and sign the petition at the link below.

Re: [meteorite-list] Are Mars Meteorites Magnetic?

2012-01-07 Thread Göran Axelsson

Hi list and everyone!

Pete, I don't agree with you. permeability is not a good term. If you
want to have a correct term then use ferromagnetism.

Permeability by itself isn't the correct term, you need to use magnetic
permeability to make it correct because permeability is just a general
word and is used in a number of expressions. Permeability is only the
term of how easily something flows through something, magnetic fields,
fluids, gases, ions in cell membranes...
For example an achondrite can have a very high permeability for water
and a low magnetic permeability. In other words, an achondrite can be
very porous and allow water to seep through it and not showing any
ferromagnetism.

It is like talking about density and dense. Everything has a density but
iron meteorites are dense.
Everything have magnetic permeability but iron meteorites have strong
ferromagnetism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferromagnetism

Personally I will continue to use the more relaxed term of magnetic and
then explain it Just like a piece of iron that is attracted by a
magnet. if the listener doesn't understand what I mean.

Disclaimer : I'm only a physicist so what do I know... ;-)

pshu...@messengersfromthecosmos.com skrev 2012-01-06 02:25:

Hello list, Greg, Bernd,
Yes, everone uses the term magnetic but
that is not the proper word for what they
are trying to convey.
Greg, you are correct in your definition.
The correct term is Permeability.
Permeability is defined as the ability to be
attracted to a magnet.
Everything has Permeability, but it is to such
a small degree that the object will not stick to
the magnet. Almost all living things contain
some iron, which makes them have a slight Permeability.
There are only three metals with a high enough
Permeability to become a magnet. these are
iron, nichol, and colbalt. Some stainless steel
can have Permeability by deformation, that is, being
bent out of shape.
If you get bent out of shape, maybe you can be
attracted to a magnet. :)
A magnet attracts the iron because the iron has
Permeability.
Magnetic is the term meaning having the properties
of a magnet.
This is sorta like Meteroid, meteor, meteorite.
I'm sorry that I did not get this out sooner, but
life got in the way.

Hi Bernd,

I meant to address this email to you and not to Eric. So here it is again.

I have always wondered why people here on the List, keep referring to some meteorites as being
magnetic. To me, being magnetic means having the properties of a magnet. There are no
meteorites that natually attract iron, so why are they described as being magnetic? Am
I wrong?

Eric inquired:

Are Mars meteorites magnetic at all?

Some of them are definitely attracted to a magnet!

One of these is Bob Verish's Los Angeles and when I held
a magnet to one my LAs, it readily jumped to the magnet!

See, for example:

[meteorite-list] The Wave, A Sight To see While in Arizona

2012-01-07 Thread Paul H.
For meteorite collectors going to Tucson, Arizona, a very
popular and beautiful rock formation to visit in northeast
Arizona is the The Wave (rock formation). This rock
formation consists of an outcrop of deeply eroded,
large-scale, eolian cross-beds in the Navajo Sandstone
in the Paria Canyon- Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness, in
Coconino County, Arizona. It is so popular that there is
a daily online and onsite lottery that held to determine,
who can visit it on any specific day. A popular article
about it is:

Arizona's Wave rock formation a stone-cold stunner
by Hugo Martín, Times, November 20, 2007,
http://www.venturacountytrails.org/News/0182-TheWaveVermilionCliffs/NewsPage.htm

More Photographs of The Wave

and 3.
http://www.venturacountytrails.org/News/0182-TheWaveVermilionCliffs/photos/_Page\
.html

Details about it are found in:
1. http://www.zionnational-park.com/coyote-buttes-paria.htm
and 2. http://www.zionnational-park.com/map-paria-canyon.htm

The geology of The Wave is discussed in:

Seiler, W. M., 2008, Jurassic Navajo sandstone of Coyote
Buttes, Utah/Arizona : coloration and diagenetic history,
preservation of a dinosaur trample surface, and terrestrial
analogs to Mars. Unpublished M.S. thesis, Dept. of

City, Utah.

The 67 MB PDF file is available from
http://content.lib.utah.edu/cgi-bin/showfile.exe?CISOROOT=/us-etd2CISOPTR=10965\7CISOMODE=print

On pages 65 - 66, it states;

Geomorphically, the Wave marks the convergence of two
wind-scoured troughs (Loope et al., 2008; Figure 2.14A).
The N-S oriented feature is approximately 96 m in 66
length---the wider, U-shaped trough is 19 m wide by 36 m
long. The narrower trough measures 16 m in length by
~2 m in width (Loope et al., 2008). These troughs expose
large foresets of rhythmic and cyclic alternating grainflow
and windripple laminae reflecting Jurassic paleoclimate
conditions (Chan and Archer, 2000; Loope et al., 2001;
Figure 2.14F). The troughs expose a 10.2 m thick eolian
set with a mean cyclic foreset thickness of 0.78 m. Well
defined, m to sub-m scale, downward plunging soft
sediment deformation on the southern flanks of the Wave
may represent fluid escape structures, however, the size,
spacing, and presence of dinosaur footprints in the area,
suggest that these soft sediment deformation features
may be vertebrate in origin (Figure 2.14E).

The geology of The Wave is also discussed by;

Loope, D. B., W. M. Seiler, J. A. Mason, and M. A.
Chan, 2008, Wind scour of Navajo Sandstone at the Wave
(central Colorado Plateau, U.S.A.) Journal of Geology.

The 1.4 MB PDF file is available from;

The geology of the area is discussed in detail in

Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, Utah and Arizona. in

[meteorite-list] IOM meteorite catalog back online

2012-01-07 Thread Carl Agee
We have migrated our website over to a new server and now our IOM
meteorite database is available online once again! It is now web
browser-based, so in principle easier to use, but there are still a
few bugs. Best viewed I am told with Firefox or Chrome. See link
below. Unfortunately the catalog entries still need some updating, so
what you see is not necessarily exactly what we have, and there are
new entries that need to be added.

Incredibly, today we took possession of our Sikhote Alin specimen that

as carry-on, and a UNM police escort will be waiting at the
Albuquerque Sunport to bring it back to the main campus. This speedy
recovery could not have happened without the generous help of some
amazing people in the meteorite community. I will give a full account
of this whole story soon, and praise those who were instrumental in
the recovery, but there is still an ongoing police investigation, so
the details will probably have to wait until next week.

Re: [meteorite-list] correction to Are Mars Meteorites Magnetic?

2012-01-07 Thread pshugar
I have just finished reading an article about Rabies.
IT was near the end when it said that the permeability
of the brain-blood barrier was the key to treating rabies.
Goran mentioned the incorrectness of the term
permeability.
I now concur with him.
I shall now endevor to use the term magnetic
permeability as this seems to describe what we are trying
to convey.
See his comments below.
Pete

 Disclaimer : I'm only a physicist so what do I know... ;-)

 /Göran

A rock can also be very porous (lots of spaces in the rock) and have
little permeability to fluids. There is not necessarily a direct
correlation. The permeability for any given fluid (e.g. water, oil, gas)
is dependent on the degree of communication between pore spaces, which is
contingent on the size and amount of physical pathways between pore
spaces. More connecting apertures between pore space results in greater
fluid permeability, but smaller apertures and pore spaces result in poorer
fluid permeability because of capillary pressure. In addition, In the case
of claystones (aka mudstones), there is generally a layer of bound water
sticking to the tiny clay particles that is immobile, reducing the total
porosity to an 'effective porosity'. Limestones can be very porous but
have poor fluid permeability due to the holes or 'vugs' in the rock being
largely interconnected.

I would presume extra-terrestrial lithologies can exhibit the same sorts
of variety in how their porosity or lack of it is organised.

Anyway, I was wondering that if magnetic permeability and fluid
permeability are at all analogous, if a corollary then exists. Is there
such a thing as magnetic porosity?

Does the disposition and particle size of any given magnetic substance
within a meteorite affect how strongly it is attracted to a magnet, as
well as the overall content of such material?

John
