Re: [meteorite-list] obvious single event continental flood debris edge 1 km thick in Gulf of Mexico from S Texas to W Florida: Rich Murray 2012.02.09

2012-02-16 Thread Rich Murray
Hello Paul H.,

Thanks for pointed criticism and leads.

If you choose, you could start exploring the many hints of major
anomalies re the Gulf of Mexico Holocene geology --

here I add !!! to indicate some candidates:

http://www.gulfbase.org/facts.php

GEOLOGY
Today, the Gulf of Mexico is a small oceanic basin surrounded by
continental land masses. Due to their physical structure, the Gulf and
the Caribbean Sea are sometimes combined and referred to as the
'American Mediterranean'. Uchupi (1975) divides the Gulf into two
distinct geographical provinces (Terrigenous and Carbonate) while
Antoine (1972) recognizes seven. The scheme proposed by Antoine is
presented here, with additional information derived from other
sources.

1) Gulf of Mexico Basin
This portion of the Gulf of Mexico contains the Sigsbee Deep and can
be further divided into the continental rise, the Sigsbee Abyssal
Plain, and the Mississippi Cone. Located between the Sigsbee
escarpment and the Sigsbee Abyssal Plain, the continental rise is
composed of sediments transported to the area from the north. !!!

The Sigsbee Abyssal Plain is a deep, flat portion of the Gulf bottom
located northwest of Campeche Bank. In this relatively uniform area of
the Gulf bottom, the Sigsbee Knolls and other small diapiric (salt)
domes represent the only major topographical features. The Mississippi
Cone is composed of soft sediment and extends southeast from the
Mississippi Trough, eventually merging with other sediments of the
central basin. The cone is bordered by the DeSoto Canyon to the east
and the Mississippi Trough to the west, and has been described in
detail by Ewing et al. (1958).

2) Northeast Gulf of Mexico
Extending from just east of the Mississippi Delta near Biloxi to the
eastern side of Apalachee Bay, this region of the Gulf bottom is
characterized by soft sediments. To the west of the DeSoto Canyon,
terrigenous (land-derived) sediments are thick and fill the remnants
of the Gulf basin. !!!

In the eastern portion of the region, Mississippi-derived sediments
cover the western edge of the Florida Carbonate Platform and a
transition towards carbonate sediments begins. The Florida Escarpment
separates the Florida Platform from the Gulf Basin and also forms the
southeastern side of the DeSoto Canyon. In a region characterized by
sediment deposition, the presence of the DeSoto Canyon is poorly
understood. !!!

Some theories suggest that the canyon is the result of erosion caused
by oceanic currents, possibly the Loop Current (Nowlin, 1971).

3) South Florida Continental Shelf and Slope
A submerged portion of the larger emergent Florida Peninsula, this
region of the Gulf of Mexico extends along the coast from Apalachee
Bay to the Straits of Florida and includes the Florida Keys and Dry
Tortugas. A generalized progression towards carbonate sediments occurs
from north to south ending in the thick carbonate sediments of the
Florida Basin. Evidence suggests that this basin was at one time
enclosed by a barrier reef system (Ewing et al., 1966; Sheridan et
al., 1966; Oglesby et al., 1965; Antoine and Ewing, 1963). In the
Straits of Florida the Jordan Knoll appears to be composed of remnants
from this ancient reef system. Evidence suggests that this reef may
have once extended across the straits, adjoining the Florida reefs
with those of northern Cuba. !!!

4) Campeche Bank
Campeche Bank is an extensive carbonate bank located to the north of
the Yucatan Peninsula (Ordonez, 1936). The bank extends from the
Yucatan Straits in the east to the Tabasco-Campeche Basin in the west
and includes Arrecife Alacran. The region shows many similarities to
the south Florida platform and some evidence suggests that the two
ancient reef systems may have been continuous (Antoine and Ewing,
1963; Uchupi and Emery, 1968). Continental drift and erosional
processes are both theorized to have played a role in the separation
of the two geologically similar carbonate platforms. !!!

5) Bay of Campeche
The Bay of Campeche is an isthmian embayment extending from the
western edge of Campeche Bank to the offshore regions just east of
Veracruz (~96 degrees W). The Sierra Madre Oriental forms the
south-southwestern border, and the associated coastal plain is similar
to the Texas-Louisiana coast in the northern Gulf. The bottom
topography is characterized by long ridges parallel to the exterior of
the basin. Salt domes are prevalent in the region, and the upward
migration of salt is theorized to be a cause of the complex bottom
profiles (Worzel et al., 1968).

Similar to the northern Gulf, large quantities of oil are produced
here, and thick terrigenous sediments predominate. !!!

6) Eastern Mexico Continental Shelf and Slope
Located between Veracruz to the south and the Rio Grande to the north,
this geological province spans the entire eastern shore of Mexico. The
Gulf bottom of the region is characterized by sediment-covered folds
that parallel the shore. Apparently created by

OK. Fun with hair-pulling calendars:

Yes, and also, Happy Anniversary to the Fall of Ash Creek, that's for
sure!

A birthday by any other name (William Shakespeare was also reputed
to be born on this exact same date in history).

And the French settled their first town in what is now the mainland USA
on that date (Of all places the same one I'm in at the moment), maybe
it was just a few days after that precise date ...

Hi Phil,

Galileo has four birthdays, and today, February 16 is another one. But
Galileo, above all certainly would have changed his birthday in line
with the new astronomical/astrological Gregorian calendar which ocurred
during his lifetime to reflect his birthday celebration as February
25-26. The reason for the consecutive days is because in Galileo's
time the new day the date advanced one day after the Sun set. So his
Julian February 15 birthtime around 3:30PM (?) on the Julian February
16th. Which of course he would have updated to Gregorian (being the
world's biggest promoter in the importance of planetary positions in
his astrological charts + astronomical precision to return to the same
heliocentric position). So we might as well make the second half of
February a Galileo fortnight celebration ;-)

It's easier to ignore all of that and just list his Julian date like in
wikipedia, so after consulting with the guy who enlightened the world
and knew everything ahead of his time, Ben Franklin, Ben immediately
updated his birthday ... and even birth year, since New Years Day in
the Colonies was on March 25 until the switch was made from Julian to
Gregorian in 1752 setting New Years day to January 1. I prefer the old
system ... a calandar that begins with the melting of the snow. This
January 1 thing we take for granted really makes no scientific sense at
all! Fun, fun fun...

Kindest wsihes

[meteorite-list] Mars Express Back in Business at the Red Planet

2012-02-16 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n1202/15marsexpress/

Mars Express back in business at the red planet
BY STEPHEN CLARK
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
February 15, 2012

Europe's Mars Express resumed full science operations in early February,
four months after scientists suspended research following persistent
glitches in the probe's solid-state mass memory unit, according to the
craft's mission manager.

Mars Express has now been restored to full operational capability and
its potential mission lifetime remains unchanged, a European Space
Agency statement said.

Problems with the 12-gigabit memory unit, which contains data and
commands necessary for instrument operations, put Mars Express in safe
mode four times. The data system is required for the spacecraft to
conduct scientific reesearch, storing up to 50 individual commands for
each observation.

The safe mode events forced Mars Express to rapidy point toward the sun,
consuming six months' worth of propellant in a short time, according to
ESA.

After the data storage glitch showed up using two redundant controllers,
engineers halted scientific observations Oct. 16 to avoid burning more
propellant and preserve the mission's expected lifetime.

Officials turned to a hardware-based timeline store in a different
computer, bypassing the issue believed to have caused the safe modes
last year.

But the backup timeline store can only hold 117 commands, much less than
the thousands executable in the timeline in the faulty solid-state mass
memory unit.

Engineers found a way to write much shorter command sequences to fit in
the hardware-based short timeline, and although the suspect memory unit
continues to experience errors, none of them have triggered a safe mode,
according to ESA.

This has recently been tested in real life, as the spacecraft
encountered a [solid-state memory unit] anomaly exactly like those in
late 2011, but this time was able to complete the observation and return
to Earth pointing without entering safe mode, an ESA statement said.
This allowed a much faster recovery to nominal operations and avoided
wasting precious propellant.

Controllers continue working on a command scheduler to allow Mars
Express to function autonomously for up to a week, reducing the workload
for ground operators.

Fred Jansen, Mars Express mission manager, said the spacecraft has more
than 8 pounds of maneuvering propellant left in its tank, which should
be enough fuel to continue the mission for up to 14 more years.

Just for the record,
ever since 2003 when I first hunted that drylake north of Rachel, I've always
said there had to be at least one meteorite at that locality, but that it was
probably already found, most likely by locals or UFO-hunters.

So, I'm relieved to learn that it was found by my ol' friend, Paul Gessler
(Nick's son), and that its recovery has been very well documented.
(Belated Congratulations, Paul;-)

I thought I was the first one to core a Nevada meteorite in order to extract a
type-specimen without compromising the integrity of its exterior, but I see
that's not the case, which you can see by viewing Paul's most excellent video.

I've been crossing Paul's tire-tracks out in the desert for more than a decade,
now, so expect to see more videos from Paul(and Nick's) most excellent
adventures.  :-)

 Jim's Fragments

The Diary of a Meteorite Hunting Trip

It chronicles Paul and Jim’s (along with Sonny Clary, Brix
K9, and Bob Verish )  hunt for meteorites on Rachel Dry
 lake.
Here is a link to the article:

 http://www.meteorite-times.com/jims-fragments/diary-of-meteorite-hunting-trip/

Well after reading that I thought I should throw this out
 there.
Here is my account, hope you enjoy it? It is kind of crappy
but I didn’t record any video back then.
