 Hi Richard,

I haven't seen a thin section of Sutter's Mill yet, but my guess is
that it will be very dark, just like the meteorite, so maybe not that
illuminating. I prefer backscatter electron images because they not
only show texture, but also image chemical compositional variations.
Like the dark olivines in my images?-  they are Mg2SiO4-rich, the
light shaded olivines are Fe2SiO4-rich. Bright patches indicate high
iron or Ti or Cr, and so on.

As to the CaO, the electron microprobe does not do carbon very well so
it usually comes up with low totals on carbonates. I looked at the
data today and we found 4 separate crystals with this composition in
one of the small SM sections -- after perusing the CM literature
today, I am pretty sure this is calcite or aragonite -- thought by
some to form during aqueous alteration and commonly found in CMs.

With respect to the classification and type, I will leave that to the
unequilibrated chondrite experts like Jeff Grossman and Alan Rubin.

MetSoc will be very interesting this year: Tissint, Sutter's Mill, and
NWA 7034. You haven't heard about NWA 7034? Oh you will...

 Jeff,

You mean the area in the SW quadrant? It's permeated with the bright
material? It could be sulfide, but I didn't get a chance to EDS or
probe it yesterday. It's all somewhat bewildering, there is so much
look at, so I am starting with the simple stuff that give good
microprobe totals -- haha!. Beware of this meteorite! Like going down

[meteorite-list] India Hammer Fall 22MAY2012

2012-05-26 Thread drtanuki
A meteorite fall occurred in the Katol area on afternoon of 22.05.2012
with a loud noise heard between 2.0 to 2.30 pm. Samples were collected from
four localities in and
around the Katol city. Samples collected are of stony meteorites with varying
size, shape and
dimensions with typical dark brown burnt surface. Compositionally these
meteorites are dominated
by silicates with little iron. There is very good chance of getting meteorite
samples from other part
of the Vidarbha area between Akola and Nagpur as huge sound with very bright
and dazzling light
has been noticed between Akola and Nagpur by many peoples in a stretch of
around 150 km in ENEWSW direction.

Re: [meteorite-list] Sutter's Mill photos at ASU

2012-05-26 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Laurence and List,

At first glance, the color-scheme of the matrix reminds me of Allende.
But, where Allende has nice round complete chondrules, Sutter's Mill
has chondrule fragments. It appears that the chondrules in SM have
been altered or damaged through some process (maybe heat, aqueous, or
shock?).

Also - I really like that unknown collection iron from the 1800's.
Nice etch on that one. :)

can an Australian hunter keep his find (or part of it) or must he/she

Re: [meteorite-list] Sutter's Mill BSE - two more

2012-05-26 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Carl and List,

Wow, I hadn't heard about NWA 7034 yet. But after looking at the
photo, I am keenly interested to hear about it now. It does not
visually resemble any achon-ung I have seen before. What a strange,
strange, stone. :)

Best regards,

MikeG

 Carl and List,

I'm struck by the chondrule variation...can't wait to see a TS (hi

As I mentioned I'm just guessing herenot a CM2, due to chondrules
actually so present, right? Not a CM3 either (if there ever is such a
 thing)
due to the rim alterations and aqueous stuff; dark matrix like a CM, yet
more crowded chondrules; complete CaO crystals; lacking so far of seeing
 any

Next Halloween I can dress up as a petrologist scientistbut won't

Like going down
 the rabbit hole

 Carl,

What's the difference between the two lithologies visible in the first
 of these two photos?

[meteorite-list] AD - Sutter's Mill Micromounts, Meteorite-Hunting Maps (Canyon Diablo and others), Juancheng Whole Stone, and Micros Galore.

2012-05-26 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Folks,

I want to give everyone an update on the Sutter's Mill micromounts.
When I first announced these, several sold right away and I quickly
ran out of fragments. So I went to my source and purchased his very
last fragments. So I now have a few more micromounts available if you
missed the first announcement. There are only 3 remaining. I may
have enough material to make a 4th specimen, but I won't know until I
sit down and prepare the specimens. So there are 3 micros left for
sure, and possibly a 4th. After this, I will be sold out for the
forseeable future. If I get any more Sutter's Mill in the future, it
won't be from the hammer stone like these.

Of course, you can use your 20% discount coupon metlist at checkout. :)

I also have several new (and large) topographical maps for well-known
meteorite strewnfields. Some of these were printed by the BLM (Bureau
of Land Management) and some of them were made by the US Geological
Survey. Some are topo maps, some are quadrangles, and some are
specialized land-use maps. All of these would be ideal for reference
or as part of a display. Quantities are limited on these.
