[meteorite-list] I have had a tragedy in my family, I ask for help.
Hello, I find myself needing to ask for help from my meteorite community. One of my children have died. My daughter Sarah died last Sunday, she died in her sleep from a complication with her prescription drugs and her breathing just stopped. Hopefully she died without even knowing. Her husband tried to resuscitate her. She was only 24 years old. I find in very hard to work now, and all packages and such things will be slow, but will go out as I can manage. There are many current expenses that are beyond my ability at the moment and I am trying to take care of 2 households for the time being. As well as all the expense of funeral, living, and such for her extended family. It is a devastating tragedy. First, I am not asking for a direct donation. [meteorite-list] NASA Mars Rover Team Aims for Landing Closer to Prime Science Site (MSL)
June 11, 2012 Dwayne Brown Headquarters, Washington 202-358-1726 dwayne.c.br...@nasa.gov Guy Webster Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. 818-354-6278 guy.webs...@jpl.nasa.gov RELEASE: 12-192 NASA MARS ROVER TEAM AIMS FOR LANDING CLOSER TO PRIME SCIENCE SITE WASHINGTON -- NASA has narrowed the target for its most advanced Mars rover, Curiosity, which will land on the Red Planet in August. The car-sized rover will arrive closer to its ultimate destination for science operations, but also closer to the foot of a mountain slope that poses a landing hazard. We're trimming the distance we'll have to drive after landing by almost half, said Pete Theisinger, Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif. That could get us to the mountain months earlier. It was possible to adjust landing plans because of increased confidence in precision landing technology aboard the MSL spacecraft, which is carrying the rover. That spacecraft can aim closer without hitting Mount Sharp at the center of Gale crater. Rock layers located in the mountain are the prime location for research with the rover. Curiosity is scheduled to land at approximately 10:31 p.m. PDT Aug. 5 (1:31 a.m. EDT, Aug. 6). Following checkout operations, Curiosity will begin a 2-year study of whether the landing vicinity ever offered an environment favorable for microbial life. Theisinger and other mission leaders described the target adjustment during a June 11 update to reporters Monday about preparations for landing and for operating Curiosity on Mars. The landing target ellipse had been an ellipse approximately 12 miles wide and 16 miles long (20 kilometers by 25 kilometers). Continuing analysis of the new landing system's capabilities has allowed mission planners to shrink the area to approximately 4 miles wide and 12 miles long (7 kilometers by 20 kilometers), assuming winds and other atmospheric conditions as predicted. Even with the smaller ellipse, Curiosity will be able to touch down at a safe distance from steep slopes at the edge of Mount Sharp. We have been preparing for years for a successful landing by Curiosity, and all signs are good, said Dave Lavery, MSL program executive. However, landing on Mars always carries risks, so success is not guaranteed. Once on the ground we'll proceed carefully. We have plenty of time since Curiosity is not as life-limited as the approximate 90-day missions like NASA's Mars Exploration Rovers and the Phoenix lander. Since the spacecraft was launched in November 2011, engineers have continued testing and improving its landing software. MSL will use an upgraded version of flight software installed on its computers during the past two weeks. Additional upgrades for Mars surface operations will be sent to the rover about a week after landing. Other preparations include upgrades to the rover's software and understanding effects of debris coming from the drill the rover will use to collect samples from rocks on Mars. Experiments at JPL indicate that Teflon from the drill could mix with the powdered samples. Testing will continue past landing with copies of the drill. The rover will deliver the samples to onboard instruments that can identify mineral and chemical ingredients. The material from the drill could complicate, but will not prevent analysis of carbon content in rocks by one of the rover's 10 instruments. There are workarounds, said John Grotzinger, MSL project scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. Organic carbon compounds in an environment are one prerequisite for life. We know meteorites deliver non-biological organic carbon to Mars, but not whether it persists near the surface. We will be checking for that and for other chemical and mineral clues about habitability. Curiosity will be in good company as it nears landing. Two NASA Mars orbiters along with a European Space Agency orbiter will be in position to listen to radio transmissions as MSL descends through Mars' atmosphere. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Curiosity was designed, developed and assembled at JPL. In other words, you have a heat-affected zone under the surface of the iron, and if you get a more volatile inclusion, it can be heated to the point that it vaporizes/expands, creating a small explosioncrater in the overlying soft/molten metal. This would explain the vast number of such craters seen on Franconia irons -- since those specimens contain large amounts of disseminated stony particles and troilite, it makes sense that they would contain a greater number of inclusions that might create such features (versus a relatively homogeneous Sikhote-Alin). The exception to this rule would be craters formed on shrapnel, but most of those supposed craters I've seen appeared to be exposures of where round (troilite) inclusions had been. The raised rims appeared to form from the shear/fracture propagating towards the weak point in the meteorite (the inclusion), creating a surface that gently sloped upwards to a smooth, round cavity. I've seen a few exceptions, but not many. Re: [meteorite-list] NEW FALL
Hello Richard, All, With proper cleaning techniques, I have seen fine flow lines and delicate ripples, splashes, and flow-lines on the surfaces of several irons that had been weathered, but were somewhat restored to their former glory. Such features are only accompanied by rust when cleaning is incomplete or when the crust has been removed by oxidation. I'm not saying that irons should have all rust removed -- on the contrary, many irons look better uncleaned, but when considering Sikhote-Alins, one must look critically at the texture of the surface one is looking at to determine whether it consists of fusion crust covered by rust, underlying metal shaped by atmospheric entry, or iron oxides cemented to the crust or underlying metal. The 'splash craters' of which you speak always looked like patches of iron oxides to me. Some looked vaguely 'splashy,' but they were almost always surrounded by areas of rust and/or bare metal, which made me think they were the result of improper cleaning. My observations may be incorrect, but I've yet to see a convincing splash crater. Every feature I would call a 'crater' has had an upraised rim. Strange that it has so many small impacts on the oriented ablated leading edge and weird chisel marks too? Looks like some satellite debris I've seen before but the stoney and pyroxene inclusions plus the entry speed it would have had seem to rule that out. Curious. [meteorite-list] Another Sutter's Mill Update (TKW is now 539g)
Hi Folks, Right after I sent out the previous update earlier today, two more finds came to light. These finds are large (for this fall) and they push the unofficial TKW to well over 500 grams. Counting these two finds, the TKW is now 539.29 grams. When I first started keeping a running tally, I suspected what many of you suspected - that the actual TKW would be over 500 grams. Well, it turns out to be true. I have been hearing numerous stories about unreported stones being found and kept by the finders, or being sold on the open market. Is it possible that the actual TKW may be closer to 1000 grams? I guess time will tell. For the purposes of collector-curiosity and science, I would like to keep this unofficial TKW tally going into the forseeable future. As we all know, official TKW's in the Met Bulletin can be wrong, and some of them are wy off the mark. I don't know if the official number will be corrected or updated in the Bulletin, so I am going to keep this unofficial tally going. If you have found a stone, and you did not report it, please consider contacting me in private and letting me know so that I may update the TKW. I promise I will keep your identity confidential and the find will be listed publicly as anonymous. Your name will never be released by me to anyone. It is important that the world knows just how much of this special meteorite exists. In time, this meteorite may be very important to science. It is likely that Sutter's Mill will be America's Tagish Lake or Murchison. Collectors and scientists alike should have an accurate picture of how much material exists. Please consider reporting your find - either to Dr. Jenniskens or me (or both). And to the boots on the ground - good luck and happy huntings! [meteorite-list] Is there any religion that invites doubt, skepticism, or a freely inquiring mind?
Team Meteorite: It's a chilly, damp night here in south Central America. The rain is pounding on my tin roof making for a happy rain forest. Subscribers to 'Meteorite', and I hope that is everyone reading this, may have already read part one in the May issue of my feature 'The Rise of the Raj and the Fall of Shergotty'. It's the first-ever published account of that 1865 fall. I'm honored to have been chosen for the assignment. Well, time is of the essence for me to complete the conclusion of the feature for the Aug issue (don't worry Derek) and tonight I'm working on 'Mr. Peppe's' bio. Subscriber's know that he was a British Gov't employee in India working as a sub-opium agent. Just as it was about to be discarded, Peppe ID'd Shergotty as a meteorite. Then he went back to work the opium fields. I find that interesting :) Oh, there's a lot more to this most excellent story but you'll have to purchase the next issue to find out. Call now to subscribe, operators are standing by. But as crucial as this article is- I'll be burning the midnight oil tonight sorting through google-scanned 19th century docs on Indian farming practices- I'm momentarily diverted by a treasure gifted to me by M-Lister Michael Gilmer. Backstory - I offered here for sale this weekend the three-volume Burnham's Celestial Handbook. Lazy me, never read it. Michael wrote me and shared his enthusiasm for the author. Copied me on a link from the 'Village Voice'. It's an interview with the author. I had no idea of the plus genius of Robert Burnham, perhaps you don't either. I wouldn't dream of wasting your time. I invite one and all to pull up a beer, slip on some comfortable Coltrane, and settle in for a sublime hour of logic and common sense on matters of the heart, mind and soul set somewhere in the multiverse. You'll LOL, you'll nod your head in agreement. Your brain will visit places it hadn't gone before.
