[meteorite-list] First meteorite found at Battle Mountain!

2012-09-03 Thread Marc Fries
Greetings

I am very pleased to announce that Bob and Moni Verish have found the
first meteorite from the Battle Mountain meteorite fall, which occurred on 22
August 2012! They have located a 19.25g meteorite that appears to be an H
chondrite at first examination. According to the Meteoritical Society database,
this makes Bob and Moni the first to ever recover an observed fall in the state
of Nevada! We offer our hearty congratulations for this history-making find!
Details of the meteorite fall, to include radar imagery, seismometry
and other data, a calculated strewn field estimate, and other information can
be found on the Galactic Analytics LLC website:

http://wp.me/p2AyTK-bg

We would like to maintain a table of all the Battle Mountain (BaM)
meteorites, much the same as Petrus Jenniskens did for the Sutter's Mill fall.
This will improve the value of the meteorites to both scientists and collectors
by preserving the individual histories of the meteorites. We will provide a
copy of this list to everyone who locates a meteorite and adds their meteorite
to it, and when the list has matured we will release it to the public. If you
find a meteorite, please let us know about it! We are not asking for samples of
any meteorite, just information about individual meteorites - the date of find,
the mass, lat/long coordinates, and the name of the finder. Your meteorite(s)
will be issued a unique BaM number, much as the Sutter's Mill meteorites were
given SM numbers.

Congratulations again to Bob and Moni for finding the newest meteorite
on Earth (that we know about, anyways)!

Cheers,
Marc Fries

[meteorite-list] camera fringing effects

2012-09-03 Thread Mendy Ouzillou
Hello everyone,

I hope you are all (for those in the US) enjoying the long holiday weekend.
I have been researching cameras to take macro shots and taking photographs
through my microscope. One thing I keep noticing is that many pictures
taken by fellow list member seem to have a fringing/blurriness on the
outside of the image. In other words, the center of the image is in focus
and the outside is not. I’ve noticed this as well with my photographs taken
with my little Nikon Coolpix S8200 camera on any shot taken in macro mode.

Question is, what causes this problem and what reasonably priced camera or
camera+lens do you recommend that takes great macro shots an can be used
with a microscope. Regarding the microscope photography, I was told to buy
a standalone camera and hold it up to the eyepiece (which works very well by
the way). However; if a microscope adapter is available, please let me
know.

Here is some feedback I have already received:
1) Canon 16 Mega Pixel Powershot A3300 IS . But the Cannon Elph series is
very good also and the smaller cameras are better because they don't cast
shadows on your subjects.
2) Nikon D300 (nice but expensive).
3) Sony DSC-W570 16.1MP

Thanks!

Mendy

[meteorite-list] The ultimate Type Collection List

2012-09-03 Thread Mendy Ouzillou
Hello everyone,

One more email to keep everyone busy.

I'd like to put together the ultimate Type Collection list and am quite sure
someone has already started one. I'd like to use this for myself as well as
post it on my website for everyone to enjoy.

Here is what I am looking for:
1) A complete list of meteorite types. For example, from shergottite there
are Basaltic, Lherzolitic and Olivine-phyric. Maybe there are some unusual
variations or anomalous versions of these as well.
2) Specific meteorite(s) that best represent that category. These examples
should be obtainable (i.e. no Antarctic specimens that fall under treaty
restrictions) even if incredibly hard to find. If you have some of these
specimens for sale, I would be happy to provide a link to the specific page
on your website.

Whatever you have, I will be happy to receive. I will merge, edit and
format and then share with everyone.

Best,

Mendy

Re: [meteorite-list] The ultimate Type Collection List

2012-09-03 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Mendy,

Here is a type list and collecting guide I put together, drawing
largely on David Weir's authoritative website -
http://www.galactic-stone.com/pages/types

There are a couple of types that are almost impossible to find on the
collector market, like Kakangari. There are also some types that are
not commonly agreed upon, or are no longer approved as official
nomenclature, like Olivine Diogenite. If I recall correctly, this is
a type that is no longer being accepted for approval and they are now
lumped in with the rest of the diogenites. And speaking of which,
there are sub-types that are difficult to acquire, but are not
official types, like Noritic Diogenite.

Building a complete type collection is a daunting task that many
collectors eventually abandon, but it's still a worthy goal. :)

Best regards,

MikeG

2012-09-03 Thread Jeff Grossman
No, olivine diogenite is a classification that is accepted for the Met
Bull, and there are several in press in MB100.

I remind everybody that there is no such thing as official nomenclature
[of meteorite classifications]. The nomcom tends to be conservative,
and generally does not start adopting new kinds of classifications until
they come into use in the literature, beyond the original proposer's
work. But nomcom does not vote to certify new terms, or anything of the
sort. Nobody does.

 Greetings

I am very pleased to announce that Bob and Moni Verish have found the
first meteorite from the Battle Mountain meteorite fall, which occurred
on 22 August 2012! They have located a 19.25g meteorite that appears to
be an H chondrite at first examination. According to the Meteoritical
Society database, this makes Bob and Moni the first to ever recover an
observed fall in the state of Nevada! We offer our hearty
 congratulations for this history-making find!
Details of the meteorite fall, to include radar imagery, seismometry and
other data, a calculated strewn field estimate, and other information can
be found on the Galactic Analytics LLC website:

Re: [meteorite-list] The ultimate Type Collection List

2012-09-03 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the clarification. I recall hearing something not long ago
about a type that would no longer be accepted for publication in the
Bulletin. What type was that? Or, did I completely remember that
wrong?

Best regards,

I remind everybody that there is no such thing as official nomenclature

and generally does not start adopting new kinds of classifications until
they come into use in the literature, beyond the original proposer's
work. But nomcom does not vote to certify new terms, or anything of the

[meteorite-list] Pseudocraters Never Die (Phillips County, Montana)

2012-09-03 Thread Paul H.
On the Internet, known pseudocraters ( craterwrongs )
never seem to die. They seem to get endlessly recycled
as seen in a rambling article, “The Younger Dryas Impact
Event and the Cycles of Cosmic Catastrophes,” reprinted
by RH on July 5, 2012 at:
http://nexusilluminati.blogspot.com/2012/07/younger-dryas-impact-event-and-cycles.html

by Annette Hayden, Havre Daily News, June 11, 2007.

This circular feature is located at Latitude: 47.804896°:
Longitude: -108.631878° in Phillips County, Montana,
about 14.5 km southwest of Zortman, Montana.

as can be seen at:

Unfortunately, these circular features are not impact craters.
These features, which partially surround the Little Rocky

According to the above web page, a laccolith is a “concordant
igneous intrusion that has domed the overlying rocks and has
a known or assumed flat floor and a postulated dikelike
feeder beneath its thickest point. It is roughly circular in plan,
less than five miles in diameter, and from a few feet to several
hundred feet in thickness.”

[meteorite-list] Clarifaction About Hurricane Isaac

2012-09-03 Thread Paul H.

It was only after I wrote it that realized the very poor
choice of words. I should have said badly affected
instead of badly hurt. Fortunately, the number of
people actually injured by this hurricane were small.
However, many people lost their houses, possessions,
livestock, and livelihoods and need help in getting

I apologize for that error.

[meteorite-list] BATTLE MOUNTAIN

2012-09-03 Thread Paul Gessler
A word of caution to those hunting this area. Avoid the south end of the dry
lake for access. There are numerous hydrothermal springs at that end
which makes for a hard crust about an inch thick over hot sticky mud. There
are vehicle trails to the lake from that end BUT they were made in winter
when it was partly frozen. Believe me stay out of this area unless on a
Quad. I know after a $260 extraction and being stranded overnight looking at

Squaws Tit in the distance.

Congratulations to Moni and Bob. Two of the best in my books. You deserve

[meteorite-list] Portales Valley (H6) Slices with Fantastic Lightning Bolt Metal - Found by SKIP WILSON!

2012-09-03 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi all,

After I placed my last Denver Blow Out Sale ad I received so much
response that I thought I'd list an update.

Even though I said I was all packed and really didn't want to unpack
to make sales before Denver, I had no choice. There was just too much
demand for my specimens at these LOW prices. I sold a lot so If you
were interested in something you'd better re-check the list to see if
it's been sold.

UPDATE: I just received a few outstanding Portales Valley (H6) Slices
with Fantastic Lightning Bolt Metal that I'll also have for sale in
Denver. These were prepared by Marvin Kilgore and the stone was found
by SKIP WILSON!

For those of you that don't know who Skip Wilson is let me explain.
He's only the most successful American meteorite hunter ever!

This prolific hunter has found - and had classified - over one hundred
and twenty five meteorites! These include two urelites, one achondrite
and several beautiful Portales Valley meteorites - one that nearly
struck his house. For nearly forty years Skip has been scouring remote
areas of New Mexico for extra-terrestrial treasure. An amazing fact
about Skip is that he's found an incredible two hundred and eleven
meteorites total (99 % were cold finds) and all were made in New
Mexico. One meteorite came from De Baca County, three from Lea County,
four from Curry County and the remaining two hundred and three coming
from within Roosevelt County!

Act soon and don't miss this opportunity to have one of his VERY
collectable finds in your collection - as I'll only have 3 - 4
specimens for sale!

Call or email with any questions, directions while in Denver, or just
to say hi - 602 481 9780

Details of the meteorite fall, to include radar imagery, seismometry
and other data, a calculated strewn field estimate, and other information
can be found on the Galactic Analytics LLC website:

We would like to maintain a table of all the Battle Mountain (BaM)
meteorites, much the same as Petrus Jenniskens did for the Sutter's Mill
fall. This will improve the value of the meteorites to both scientists
and collectors by preserving the individual histories of the meteorites.
We will provide a copy of this list to everyone who locates a meteorite
and adds their meteorite to it, and when the list has matured we will
release it to the public. If you find a meteorite, please let us know
about it! We are not asking for samples of any meteorite, just
information about individual meteorites - the date of find, the mass,
lat/long coordinates, and the name of the finder. Your meteorite(s) will
be issued a unique BaM number, much as the Sutter's Mill meteorites were
given SM numbers.

Congratulations again to Bob and Moni for finding the newest meteorite
on Earth (that we know about, anyways)!

Cheers,
Marc Fries

Rover Completes Fourth Drive
Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Curiosity Daily Status Report for Aug. 30, 2012

Curiosity drove about 70 feet (about 21 meters) on Thursday, continuing its
trek eastward toward a science destination called Glenelg, where it may begin
using its drill. This was the rover's fourth drive since landing. The trek to
Glenelg is expected to take several weeks, including a stop beginning in the
next week or two for conducting activities to check out the rover's robotic arm.

The rover is healthy. Besides the drive, Curiosity's activities during the
mission's Sol 24 included imaging of the sky by the rover's Navigation Camera
and
data collection by environmental monitoring instruments.

Sol 24, in Mars local mean solar time at Gale Crater, ends at 11:19 p.m. Aug.
30, PDT.

Curiosity Has a Photo Day
Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Curiosity Daily Status Report for Aug. 31, 2012

Curiosity took a sol off from driving and spent time during the
mission's Sol 25, on Aug. 31, 2012, taking images and collecting
environmental monitoring data.

Imaging tasks for the sol included Navigation Camera sky
observations to check for clouds, and Mast Camera imaging of the
terrain eastward where the rover will be driving during the next
few sols. In addition, the Mast Camera was used for taking a
360-degree panorama from the location that Curiosity reached by
its Sol 24 drive.

Sol 25, in Mars local mean solar time at Gale Crater, ends at
11:59 p.m. Aug. 31, PDT.

Subject: [meteorite-list] My daughter Lauren is getting married in 2 weeks AD
sale!

Hello List,

Many of you have met my elder daughter Lauren In Tucson Show the several times
she has been there with me over the years.  Well, In just 2 weeks Lauren is
getting married!  I know, it is hard to believe, and that you all remember her
when she was just this tall.  Well, it is true, and her mother and I are very
excited.

And we wanted to take this opportunity toinvite ALL of you to... help us pay
for
it!

I have some bills with the wedding still to pay for, andsome other non-wedding
bills as well, and so I am very motivated to make somegreat deals this week.
Up
for negotiation are someof the following:

Gibeon Anvil Slices. Reduced to $499.  Originally Priced at $900, for a VERY
LIMITED TIME, and for a LIMITED number of slices, I am reducing the price per
slice to $499 each!  Yes, you read that correctly.  Just $499. If you didn't
read my post to the list on Aug 7, I have copied at the bottom of this email
AND
the current issue of Meteorite Magazine has a great story about the specimen
written by my wife Qynne.  I will consider cutting one slice into halves or
into
4 quarters if and only if I have all (two or four) parts spoken for, and the
cost per half will be $299 and the cost per 1/4 will be $199.  All slices are
priced the same, no matter how thick or how big, as each slice tells the same
story.  Please ask for specific details.  Photos can be seen here:
http://s361.photobucket.com/albums/oo52/stevearnoldpmh/Gibeon%20Anvil%20Slices/

Gibeon Anvil Main Mass, 41kg.  $410,000  OK, I am joking.  I really don't know
what it is worth, and not sure what I would sell it for, but I would entertain
any offer that included at least a nice chunk of cash and possibly some trade
material.

Brenham Slices.  Some large 20 inch wide 600g to 2.5 kg oriented full slices
available and some part slices from the 351 kg oriented mass.  Ask for details
and prices.

Ash Creek individuals and slices.  I have a few Ash Creek individuals and huge
full slices available and am willing to deeply discount them.

Meteorite Magnets in large numbers at discounted prices., If anyone wants $500
worth or $1000 worth of the meteorite Magnets personally autographed by me that
I sell on ebay,, I will sell in bulk at very deep discounts.  These sell GREAT
at shows where you set up and sell to live people.

Meteorite Riker Sets in large numbers at discounted prices. I am selling these
like crazy out of my retail store.  Retail priced at $9.99 up to $49.99,
depending on the rock and the weight, these items do GREAT.  See here:
http://s361.photobucket.com/albums/oo52/stevearnoldpmh/Riker%20Box%20Sets/

Caldwell Kansas slices or larger chunks, Ask.

Fayetteville AR crumbs, Never on the market before, this fall happened just 3
miles from the University of Arkansas campus. I only have a couple of grams of
crumbs. Go Hogs!

Muonionalusta.  14.8 kg mass.  Would chop in half or sell whole.  Make offer.

Once I get enough money for pressing matters, the sale will go off. If someone
is really smart, I would not be surprised if someone would buy a big assortment
of my Gibeon Anvil slices and the sale will be over before a lot of you even
read this.  But, who knows, if something interests you, check in with me just
in
case there is still time.

Thanks.

From Aug. 7, 2012

Hello List,I am excited to announce that I now have available, for a very
limited time, a few full slices from a 51kg Gibeon meteorite that was used as
an
anvil, possibly for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Amazingly rare,
historically significant, and way off the Wow Chart!Gibeon is one of the
largest strewnfields in the world, with hundreds of large and thousands of
smaller sizes specimens found since science discovered it in 1836.  However,
it is impossible to know how many tons of this meteorite had been found and
used
for millennia before 1836 by the natives in and around the huge Gibeon
Strewnfield.  It makes perfect sense that as people would find hunks of iron
laying around, that they would take hammer sized pieces, and make hammers out
of
them, and take anvil sized pieces, and make anvils out of them and take smaller
sized pieces and forge tools such as hoes, scrapers, knives, and spear points
etc., out of those.Until now, I am an not aware that any meteorite
