Re: [meteorite-list] How is the Denver Rock show going?
Hi Shawn and all, The Denver Show ran from September 10th (roughly) to September 16th. I attended for a few days. Blaine Reed's room was central to all the meteorite collectors and dealers for the most part. Blaine always has a nice display as well as good prices on items. A number of dealer consign items at Blaines room. Thursday night Geoff Notkin, Marlin Clilz, Blaine Reed, Mike Martinz a few others and myself sat down by the pool and smoked cigars and talked for a couple of hours. Much beer was consumed. Friday was the get together of the Comets and bidding on meteorite items. I didn't attend but can offer some notes on what I heard. Lots of fun and a few bargins at the bidding. My understanding is there was one item offered involving a course on learning a language. There were multipal rooms offer meteorite specimens of various kinds in the Ramada (formally the Holiday Inn). Always a lot of nice NWA's, Campos and other meteorite types. The Merchandise Mart was home to Rubin Garcia Selling many fine specimens. He seem to have a crowd the whole time I was there looking and as I passed by to leave. The wholesale area usually has a couple of meteorite dealers as well. Denver Show size is not what it use to be. After the attacks on 9 11 the attendance shrank and hasn't been the same since. Denver is always worth attending and helps you get through until the Tucson Show. Sorry for the miss spelled names but just wanted to make a quick comment. All my best! --AL Mitterling Quoting Shawn Alan photoph...@yahoo.com: Hello Listers, With NV in fool swing with the Battle Mountain fall and other parts of the world being blessed by the Meteorite Gods, I was wondering how is the Denver Rock Show going and if any Listers have taken any photos of some of Dealers collections? I was hoping to go back home in Colorado around this time, but it wasn't happening, so all I can do is read and look at others Listers experiences at the Denver show, which I have to add is fun, I was able to go out to the show a couple years ago, and I seems that its getting bigger with more meteorite dealers :) Shawn Alan __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Draveil meteorite
Hi all, The French hammer fall of Draveil is not yet listed in the met bulletin, anyone any ideas on whats happening with it? Also Is anyone aware of any specimens of Draveil in private hands other than the piece owned by Pierre Marie Pele, the piece/pieces in Alain Carions collection and of course the specimen that is owned by Mme. Comette where it fell on her house. I am aware of possibly one other fragment, a micromount from Pierre Marie's specimen that was sold in a charity auction but no others. There are of course the superb large multi kg pieces in the Paris MNHM. Anyone have knowledge of any other pieces? Your collector's kit includes: 1) Meteorite cast finished by hand to mirror the original meteorite rendered in meticulous detail. 2) A full color numbered edition Certificate. 3) Standing, aluminum classification label. 4) If you want a specimen of the Peekskill meteorite, we can include that for $250 per gram. List of the Peekskill meteorite specimens available: (This piece has Fusion Crust) 1.14g 1.13g 1.11g 1.05g .98g .85g .84g .81g .36g .34g On the night of October 9, 1992 at 7:50 PM a 27 pound stone ploughed through the trunk of Michele Knapp's 1980 Chevy Malibu that was parked in her driveway while the family watched TV. Hearing a horrendous noise just outside of their home, the Knapp family ran to the door to discover the damage to their car. It wasn't until the next day that they found the cosmic traveler partially buried in a shallow crater in the driveway under the car. So begins the legend of Peekskill Meteorite. To commemorate this historic, celestial event, the Peekskill stone has been newly re-cast and rendered by hand to match the original in meticulous detail. Now you too can celebrate this meteoric event by making this cast part of your collection. The Peekskill Meteorite cast is first cast in high quality HYDRO-STONE®, one of the hardest and strongest of all gypsum cements. This makes it more durable than other plaster castings. The weight of the cast is 11 pounds, about half of the original weight of the actual meteorite. It is then color matched with superior-grade paints, rendering the exterior of the meteorite, the Chevy Cinnabar Red, and the chrome of the cars bumper as it scraped by. This Limited Edition Collectors Kit has been produced with attention to detail and the quality that Collectors have come to expect. We are meteorite collectors for collectors. [meteorite-list] New Big Impact Theory
New Big Impact theory. In case you find the references to a new Ice Age puzzling, I'll remind you that it's the Ice Age that we in right now. Yes, friends, we are in an Ice Age, at 5-7 C. below the long-term norm. The full text of the article follows. Sterling K. Webb - http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/09/120919103612.htm Did a 'Forgotten' Meteor Have a Deadly, Icy Double-Punch? ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) - When a huge meteor collided with Earth about 2.5 million years ago and fell into the southern Pacific Ocean it not only could have generated a massive tsunami but also may have plunged the world into the Ice Ages, a new study suggests. A team of Australian researchers says that because the Eltanin meteor -- which was up to two kilometres across -- crashed into deep water, most scientists have not adequately considered either its potential for immediate catastrophic impacts on coastlines around the Pacific rim or its capacity to destabilise the entire planet's climate system. This is the only known deep-ocean impact event on the planet and it's largely been forgotten because there's no obvious giant crater to investigate, as there would have been if it had hit a landmass, says Professor James Goff, lead author of a forthcoming paper in the Journal of Quaternary Science. Goff is co-director of UNSW's Australia-Pacific Tsunami Research Centre and Natural Hazards Research Laboratory. But consider that we're talking about something the size of a small mountain crashing at very high speed into very deep ocean, between Chile and Antarctica. Unlike a land impact, where the energy of the collision is largely absorbed locally, this would have generated an incredible splash with waves literally hundreds of metres high near the impact site. Some modelling suggests that the ensuing mega-tsunami could have been unimaginably large -- sweeping across vast areas of the Pacific and engulfing coastlines far inland. But it also would have ejected massive amounts of water vapour, sulphur and dust up into the stratosphere. The tsunami alone would have been devastating enough in the short term, but all that material shot so high into the atmosphere could have been enough to dim the sun and dramatically reduce surface temperatures. Earth was already in a gradual cooling phase, so this might have been enough to rapidly accelerate and accentuate the process and kick start the Ice Ages. In the paper, Goff and colleagues from UNSW and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, note that geologists and climatologists have interpreted geological deposits in Chile, Antarctica, Australia, and elsewhere as evidence of climatic change, marking the start of the Quaternary period. An alternative interpretation is that some or all of these deposits may be the result of mega-tsunami inundation, the study suggests. There's no doubt the world was already cooling through the mid and late Pliocene, says co-author Professor Mike Archer. What we're suggesting is that the Eltanin impact may have rammed this slow-moving change forward in an instant -- hurtling the world into the cycle of glaciations that characterized the next 2.5 million years and triggered our own evolution as a species. As a 'cene' changer -- that is, from the Pliocene to Pleistocene -- Eltanin may have been overall as significant as the meteor that took out the non-flying dinosaurs 65 million years ago. We're urging our colleagues to carefully reconsider conventional interpretations of the sediments we're flagging and consider whether these could be instead the result of a mega-tsunami triggered by a meteor. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] AD - NWA 5000 Main Mass for Sale - New Website - Check it Out!
Dear List Members, In celebration of the five year anniversary since Northwest Africa 5000 (NWA 5000) was discovered and legally obtained from the country of Western Sahara, I would like to announce a fresh website centered around placing the main mass. As you may or may not know, NWA 5000 is a world record setting lunar meteorite from our nearest celestial neighbor, the Moon. It is simply the best; a true international treasure and a Cosmic Masterpiece. It is also the largest and most aesthetically pleasing piece of the Moon ever placed on the market or found for that matter. Every aspect of this Moon rock has been micromanaged and the 9,610 gram main mass is now ready to be put on the market. I felt it best to quietly offer it here first before going public next month. This way, it is possible for a seriously interested party to save broker fees and I will not have the added expenses of a world-wide advertising campaign which I have budgeted for. I will turn over this project to a media/advertising firm on October 15th so this represents the deadline for the very best deal possible. I decided against using an auction house saving a prospective buyer up to 50% or more! No seller commissions, no buyer premiums, no last-minute emotional bidding and no ridiculous hidden fees, however once I start spending the advertising budget, I will no longer be able to entertain the lowest possible offers. If you are looking for the ultimate natural history centerpiece, now is the time to deal. Any forthcoming offers should be placed through the contact page on the website. I only have time to respond to serious inquiries only due to simultaneously managing several exciting projects at once. I would like to see it is the main attraction in a natural history museum, art gallery, business or personal collection but time restraints may dictate otherwise. I want it placed well before the end of the year otherwise this masterpiece may have a date with a wire saw, several artisans and a jewelry company. I will offer special terms to museums or other worthy institutions for a very limited amount of time in order to preserve the main mass whole. Contact me me soon and maybe we can work within your budgetary guidelines or allow time to find a benefactor(s). Everything you ever wanted to know about NWA 5000 including a current appraisal, legality statement, science and images can be found at the link below: NWA 5000 Website Link:http://themeteoritesite.com/ Thank you for considering NWA 5000, Kindest Regards, Adam Hupe The Hupe Collection IMCA Director 2185 __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: September 13-18, 2012
OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Robotic Arm Tools Get To Work - sols 3071-3076, Sept. 13, 2012-Sept. 18, 2012: Opportunity is continuing the in-situ (contact) science campaign at a putative location of clay minerals at the inboard edge of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour Crater. The rover is positioned next to a large light-toned block of exposed outcrop. Previous Panoramic Camera (Pancam) imagery indicates mineral hydration in this block. On 3071 (Sept. 13, 2012), Opportunity performed a very small turn-in-place to position a high-valued target within reach of the robotic arm. Then on Sol 3073 (Sept. 15, 2012), the rover collected a Microscopic Imager (MI) mosaic of the surface target Azilda, followed by the placement of the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) on the same for a multi-sol integration. On Sol 3076 (Sept. 18, 2012), Opportunity used the Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT) to brush the same target and then used the Microscopic Imager to collect another mosaic, followed again by another placement of the APXS. As of Sol 3076 (Sept. 18, 2012), the solar array energy production was 564 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.560 and a solar array dust factor of 0.648. Total odometry is 21.78 miles (35,047.47 meters). __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Meteorite Auction (AD)
Dear List Members, Please check out about 65 items now up, including over a dozen different pallasites, large old Nininger Canyon Diablo, a cool large Gibeon, A large Canyon Diablo with a nice sized hole, etc, etc. http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson2013.html ALSO, it is time people who will be placing absentee bids start Doing so. Last year about 30% of the absentee bids came in AFTER I had left for Tucson, so never were recorded and bid for. You can always Ad more when new material comes in. In addition, the call now is for higher mid range and substantial specimens for the remaining lots (I have plenty of low and lower mid Range specimens to satisfy the ultra thrifty bidders). For really substantial specimens I will negotiate consignment fees. Re: [meteorite-list] Draveil Meteorite
I heard all about how the museum tried to label all dealers and hunters as scum, robbing the French people of their heritage. Of course they didn't bother to spend much time hunting themselves, just begging for free meteorites from landowners, sadly 90% of Draveil was lost due to incompetent scientists refusing to release any data while not bothering to spend any time in recovering more specimens from the field by working at it themselves. Sad, but becoming more normal worldwide. As we see with the new Battle Mountain meteorite fall, no scientists bothered coming to hunt other than Marc Fries, who's cooperation was crucial in locating this fall, with his help we have found more than 20 pieces in the hardest possible terrain. If this was a French fall, it would never have been found. Always the same scenario, like as the Brittany fall few months before, Hunters are heritage robbers, just thinking about monney... but probably many stones lost for both private and public collections because of that... [meteorite-list] New BLM rules on col. meteorites
During the Denver Show at the Merchandise Mart, a lady from the BLM booth stopped by my Meteorhall booth, and while looking over my meteorites for sale (none of the meteorites were from BLM land, land that belongs to all citizens of the USA, by the way) mentioned that new regulations for collecting meteorites had been issued by the Assistant Director, Renewable Resources and Planning of the BLM on Sept. 10, 2012. Look up Instruction Memorandum No. 2012-182, or contact Lucia Kuizon, National Paleontologist at (202) 912-7253 or lkui...@blm.gov for a copy and information on the new rules. Here is a little taste of the new rules: Can a mining claim be located for meteorites? Answer, NO. Meteorites can be collected, limited to certain public lands, up to a whopping 10 pounds per year per person, with only surface collecting. Specimens that are casually collected (what the heck does that mean? anyone that risks their life by searching for meteorites in the desert, spending hundreds of dollars and many days is not casually collecting are they?) are for personal use only, and may not be bartered or sold for commercial purposes. However, you can get a PERMIT for commercial use and sale, unless otherwise prohibited by other laws, regulations, land use plans or closures.
