Re: [meteorite-list] Great Example of Private + Science
Greg, boy was that fun giving samples to the U of A. I feel the need for the private and scientific arms of meteorite dynamics work well together most of the time. Scientists rarely have the time or resources to rapidly deploy to a new meteorite fall, where the private meteorite hunter often does. The private sector has little ability to do research on these celestial gifts and we rely on the scientists to unlock the secrets they can tell humanity. I am always happy to donate as much as possible when I can, it helps when we receive positive accolades like in this UofA paper. However it erodes our confidence when we are vilified by those who want to control things like we recently saw in a horrifying barrage of negative press such as came out of the recent Novato fall in California. I was so put off by that press that I felt my expertise was not wanted nor would I waste it considering the antagonistic press vilifying private meteorite hunters. Thus most of the more accomplished meteorite hunters have not gone to Novato, and the result is a minuscule amount of recovered material, a tragic loss for science and collectors alike from a huge meteorite fall.
