[meteorite-list] Tucson Show

2013-01-18 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List Members,

I tried everything possible to attend the Tucson Show but too many other
pressing concerns have come up.

The main concern is for my mother-in-law who we moved out here to Laughlin
three years ago.  She has been having medical issues and her primary doctor
says leaving her alone for a few days is out of the question right now.  We do
not want the state to place her in assisted living so we are doing our best to
work with her doctors, who in my opinion, have been over-prescribing
medications.  A new doctor cut back her medications and she seems to be doing
better but it is too soon to tell.  We almost lost her a few years ago due to
counterfeit Chinese medications that made it into American market.

My new wife , Zann von Hupe (married on 12-12-2012 at 12:00 noon) has had to
take care of her the last couple of weeks because I caught a nasty cold which
lasted way too long and her mother can no longer drive herself to doctors'
appointments.  My advice is to get a flu shot before going to Tucson if you
haven't already.  It takes two weeks to kick in and could save you a lot of
downtime and misery.

Luckily for me, they are having a Gem and Mineral Show right here in Laughlin,
Nevada.  I am glad to see a new show in town since the McCloud Jamboree which
was held outdoors went away.  This new show could be the start of something
fantastic since the economic advisers are talking about a massive 18-hotel wide
event with over 20,000 rooms available here in town.

I also booked two adjacent spots at the Remember When Antique Show if any of

Re: [meteorite-list] Deteriorating Situation in Mali

2013-01-18 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Everyone,

Agreed, expel them is not quite the right word. If the dangerous
militants are driven out, they will take shelter in neighboring
countries and cause trouble there. They could de-stabilize the entire
region. In reality, they must be made to put down their arms and use
peaceful means to advance their agendas, or they must be destroyed.
They leave the world no choice but to fight them.

It would be a different story if the people wanted these militants to
rule and to live under the harshest version of Sharia law, but many of
the people do not want that. The militants have moved in and forced
their violent rule on the local people. The remotest and most lawless
areas of the Sahara have always had some problem with militants
lurking around, but the situation has changed now. The fall of
Gaddafi regime has created a chaotic situation where heavy weapons
have flooded the black market and disaffected fighters have scattered
into neighboring areas to cause problems. I fear for our friends in
Morocco, Mali, Mauritania, and other nearby countries that have
labored long and hard to achieve peace and stability.

From a scientific standpoint, this situation has the potential to
further disrupt the flow of meteorites from the Sahara. The
fundamentalists want to live in the dark ages without modern science
and they want to force that way of life on anyone unfortunate enough
to be under their rule. I shudder to think of what would happen if
that cancer were to spread across the Sahara!

May peace and reason prevail.

Best regards,

MikeG

Subject: [meteorite-list] Deteriorating Situation in Mali

 Hi List,

Some of the events going on in the Saharan Desert bear watching by the
 meteorite world.

First, fundamentalist Islamists have seized control of northern Mali
and ancient city of Timbuktu. I respect Islam and Muslims, but these
fundamentalists are affiliated with Al-Qaeda and they have enforced
Sharia law on the residents of northern Mali and Timbuktu. Worse,
these militants are heavily-armed with black market weapons from the
fall of the Gaddafi regime in Libya.

 Why should meteorite collectors/dealers/hunters care?

The fundamentalists are violent enemies of science and they have no
tolerance for other religions or traditions. Much of Mali and
Timbuktu is Sufi and the Sufi traditions are considered heretical to
many fundamentalists. As we sit here discussing this, militants are
destroying cultural heritage sites and wiping out anything that
doesn't agree with their version of Sharia law. Remember what the
Taliban did to the Buddhas of Bamiyan? Expect more of the same in
 Timbuktu.

The violence has the potential to spread to the neighboring countries
of Niger, Burkina Faso, Algeria, and Mauritania. These are all
places that are familiar to the collectors of NWA meteorites. The
strewnfields of Bassikounou, Gao, and many others are now too
dangerous for outsiders. If you have been thinking about a meteorite
hunting expedition to Mali or Niger, you may want to seriously rethink
 that idea now.

In the last year, we have witnessed one war that is destroying one of
the most ancient landscapes on Earth - Syria. Syria is being reduced
to rubble, and now the famous city of Timbuktu is going to suffer the
same fate - either from the fundamentalist militants or from the
French military efforts to expel them.

Let us all take a minute and stop what we are doing. Regardless of
your faith, pray for the residents of the Sahara and that this
violence will stop. The Saharan Desert is one of the most beautiful
(yet desolate) places on Earth and this conflict has the potential to
spread like a cancer to consume much of the land of desert meteorites.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Show

2013-01-18 Thread Ed Deckert

Hi Adam,

You are a good man. I take care of an elderly parent at home, and it is
wonderful to hear that you too have the love and concern to want to take
care of family. Too often, parents are shoved off to live the rest of their
lives in an assisted living facility because nobody wants them. They cared
for us when we were children, but somehow, that does not always come full
circle when they grow elderly.

Yes, there are instances where assisted living is the only good option, but
like you, I wish to avoid that until it becomes absolutely necessary.

I sincerely hope that your mother-in-law's health continues to improve.

Warm Regards,
Ed Deckert

[meteorite-list] Tucson Show Flu

2013-01-18 Thread Greg Hupé

Hello Everyone,

After hearing about the severe flu this season and being one of the lucky
ones who has not gotten it yet, I will have a pocket container of Hand
Sanitizer on me at all times. I am no germaphobe, but simply washing your
hands after every handshake 'may' help to avoid the flu or spread it if you
have it. I would encourage every dealer to have a LARGE container in their
rooms that you and your guests can use FREQUENTLY!

Hope everyone has a great weekend! :)

Just my opinion, but it is worth getting the Flu shot. The vaccine this year is
a pretty good match to the influenza strain that is out there. And even if you

Tucson: if you haven't gotten one already, is it worth it to get a flu
shot before coming to Tucson?

2013-01-18 Thread Adam Hupe
And to think I laughed at a guy on a flight to Phoenix who sterilized the
pleather seat with about a dozen alcohol wipes before sitting down. I asked
what he was doing and he stated, you don't know whose filthy backend has been
flagellating on this seat, it could be loaded with hazardous and deadly
microbes!

It was a Southwest flight with some areas where the seats faced each other.
Unfortunately for the germaphobe guy, he had a lady that coughed the entire
flight directly across from him. He asked if he could change seats but it was
already too late since the cabin had been crosschecked and was taxiing down the
runway. I saw the poor guy trying to cover his face and hold his breath.  At
one point, I thought he was going to pass out. The only time I heard him say
anything for the rest of the flight was to the stewardess to keep her
disgusting contaminated peanuts to herself.

Don't hold your breath too long,

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Flu shot before Tucson?

2013-01-18 Thread Greg Hupé
I was about to book my flights, rental car and hotel rooms today for the 2
1/2 weeks I would be in Tucson and the surrounding areas, but after talking
to many people in Arizona/SW states and in Florida/Texas (my travel route),
I have not booked anything yet. Not to sound like a wimp, but to catch the
worst flu in decades that comes back to you multiple times does not does fun
to me at all, especially since I would be encapsulated in a couple airplanes
for 9-12 hours to get to Tucson. Everyone I have talked to or have heard
about has had a minimum of three weeks of horrible sickness, and some have
had it two and even three times. :(

I need to sleep on this one and make my decision tomorrow... :-/

Best Regards,
Greg

Folks, this flu is NO FUN!

I called it Pandemic days before anyone started reporting it. Had it
been a killer, over 50% of people in AZ would be dead.

I was sick 21 days with symtoms that did not match any flu I've ever
had. One of the worst coughs I've ever had in my life. Then I got
better for about a week and it started all over again and I am sick
again. This time, terrible cough, fever. Today, I turned clients
away and tried to stay in bed and just rest. Have not had a good
nights sleep in a week. Have to try and sleep sitting up.

I have not been sick in many years..this is bad!

Not Fun. The last thing I want to do is be in a group of people.

Good luck...you are going to need it.

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update - January 10-16, 2013

2013-01-18 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Investigating Light-toned Veins in Rock Outcrop -
sols 3187-3193, Jan. 10, 2013-Jan. 16, 2013:

Opportunity is on the inboard edge of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour
Crater, now engaged in in-situ (contact) science investigation of veins
in the light-toned outcrop Whitewater Lake, a place the rover visited
previously.

On Sol 3187 (Jan. 10, 2013), the rover bumped a little over a meter to
reach the vein targets in the outcrop, named Ortiz. On Sol 3189
(Jan. 12, 2013), Opportunity, using her robotic arm, collected a large
Microscopic Imager (MI) mosaic of the vein targets. This was followed by
the placement of the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) for an
overnight integration. On Sol 3191 (Jan. 14, 2013), the rover collected
more MI mosaics of a target offset from the first and completed this
with placing the APXS on the new target.

Opportunity started exhibiting memory symptoms this month similar to
events seen with Spirit in 2009. This is not a health and safety concern,
but can cause loss of some data intended for downlink. It can be avoided
for more important data by downlinking before any rover nap. The suspect
cause is corruption in the flash file system used by the rover for
non-volatile telemetry storage. The project implemented a detection
diagnostic on Sol 3189 (Jan. 12, 2013) to flag the occurrence of these
events in separate non-volatile memory. No events have occurred since
Sol 3183 (Jan. 6, 2013), and the rover remains in good health.

As of Sol 3193 (Jan. 16, 2013), the solar array energy production was
498 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 1.08 and a solar
array dust factor of 0.623.

Total odometry is 22.03 miles (35455.34 meters).

Ah-ha!!!

All suspisions of this severe viral strain are no doubt incubating in future
petri-dish cultures from incoming Tucson visitor's throats...and are of
course by definition, suspended until further notice!

Althoughwith regrets (and I can get talked out of it) I am also
re-thinking the risk factor of making the trip. It would be an awful
development, with so many chondrule paintings ready for show. However, some
have already suggested that they look nothing like chondrules, but rather
cell cultures. This is falsethey look nothing like either.

I guess I'll take my chances, and make the journey! After all, if I don't,
I might get hit by a meteorite on the top-of-me-head before 2014 comes
about, flu or no flu.

Just my opinion, but it is worth getting the Flu shot. The vaccine this
year is
a pretty good match to the influenza strain that is out there. And even
if you

I would agree with getting a shot if it helps and can say it make the flu less

time I didnt get a flu shot and did get sick per say in the winter, but got
other ailment, but it is what it is. My question is, is there a big out break

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Flu shot before Tucson?

2013-01-18 Thread WS Schroer

Hi listoids,
I have a strange sort of asthma that normally doesn't bother me, but when I
get a cold, or even worse a flue, it becomes life threatening and I've had
several close calls. Wearing a good quality surgical face mask is compulsory
for me when I go out during the flue season, despite getting vaccinated
every

year.
I wear one when I'm in a plane flying overseas and often enough I'm not the
only. And we all

know that it is quite common for people in certain areas of Japan to wear
these masks.

What I'm trying to say is that nobody should feel foolish by walking around
in
Tuscon with a mask like that and that you guys who go or live there should
get one a.s.a.p. to
protect yourself AND your family from the nasty bug that is floating around
this year.

It might look a bit funny, but it's probably you who will have the last
laugh when you return home without getting infected.
But it is important to get a good one and not just a tissue with a rubber
band.

Cheers

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Flu shot before Tucson?

2013-01-18 Thread Paul Harris

Dear List,

Since last week I've been in contact with suffering flu patients on a
daily basis. I've given a zillion flu shots, dispensed tons of Tamiflu
and have been compounding Tamiflu in suspension form for children. We
haven't been getting enough Tamiflu in to meet demand so please get the
flu shot while you still have the 2 weeks needed to develop the
antibodies needed to protect you from this years flu virus. It's a
pretty good match. The injectable vaccine contains attenuated flu virus
(dead) and you can NOT get the flu from it. A small percentage of
people can develop a mild fever and or aches and pains for a couple of
days but they are not getting the flu. It's just how their immune
system and body are reacting.

If you do get the flu have your Doctor prescribe Tamiflu as soon as
possible (within 48 hours) to help with the severity and duration.
Hopefully you'll be able to find a pharmacy that has it in stock. We
ran out just before I left today and I had to turn away a father with a
very sick child...

If there weren't so many people sick this email would have been sent 2
hours ago. It was total chaos today... Stay healthy!

Paul

Re: [meteorite-list] Black Beauty on the open market?

2013-01-18 Thread Norm Lehrman
Thomas, Mendy and all,

If it was listed under coprolite or any variation of the same, I would be
equally offended.  It should be listed under rock (allthough I don't disagree
with the sentiment behind the  coprolite label. Guano would also work).
There's also an Apollo lunar listed that should create quite a stir if you have
$1.5 million to spare.  I don't even want to talk about the tektite lies and
absurdities that are there every day. Ebay is an absolute tsunami of
misinformation.  In one cynical way, it is good for the legitimate market.  If
enough people get burned (and realize it---), it should bring business to those
that offer honesty and integrity along with their specimensl  Sadly, most
buyers
don't have the background to know they are being ripped off.  I would like to
help, but what can one do?  Occassionally a seller offers thanks for a
correction, but most are quite content with their fraud  Buyer beware!

It is nice, but I don't see why it would be much more
 valuable than say Nakhla
 or Shergotty.

  Hello Listers

I was wondering, will this meteorite ever be sold on
the open market or has it

be donated to science already because of its rarity?
And if so, what would be
  the
value? I mean in science terms, this find could have a
 few billion $ value or
  more cause

that is how much it would cost to build a rover that
 could bring back a sample
  like
  black beauty from Mars
