Good question. I guess this one slipped under the radar, so to speak. So, no offense to the Peabody Nat. Museum, but who verified it? If it was the curator of Central American Antiquities, then I'll wait for further verification. Peabody spokeswoman Melanie Brigockas said it was determined to be one of the most common types of meteorites, ordinary chondrite. The meteorite has a thin, black crust from burning as it entered the Earth's atmosphere, and a light grey interior, according to a Peabody release. Larry Beck called the Police Department Saturday morning to report that a rock crashed through his roof Friday night. Although it had not been confirmed as such, “all indications say that it is probably a meteorite,” said Police Chief Edward Stephens earlier Tuesday. He said, after comparing pictures of actual meteorites to the rock in question, “it does appear to be a meteorite.” http://www.nhregister.com/articles/2013/04/23/news/doc5176cbca458bc888165062.txt __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Need a Good Price on 2 Kilos of Iron Meteorite Cutting Dust
Hi Folks, I have a friend in Europe who is doing a series of presentations involving school-kids and meteorites. Part of these demonstrations involves using magnets and stardust (iron meteorite cuttings). These demos have been a hit and he plans on doing another round of them soon. I have exhausted my supply of iron meteorite dust and I need two more kilos of it. I can't find a good price on it. I had a couple of offers, but either the price was too high, or the person went silent during negotiations and stopped answering emails. If you have some of this material available, please contact me ASAP. We need this dust very soon. Adam, During the campus-wide Berkeley Days event last weekend, Crystal, Jacob and I went to visit Jason, Peter and Barbara Utas who put on an incredible outreach/educational program. In a classroom of the earth sciences building, they displayed some impressive specimens from their collection. They were so swamped that I volunteered to help for about 1.5 hours answering various questions from the very young to the very old, from the really ridiculous to the really thoughtful. This woman came in with her two children and began quizzing me about meteorites having special energy or properties (not the scientific kind either). She then proceeded to tell me that her homeopathic doctor prescribed meteoritic iron to give to one of her children for either breathing or anxiety issues. I was suffering from both of those as she was telling me her story and thankfully had 2 grams of Sikhote Alin between the cheek and gums to address the issues. When I calmly explained to her that meteorites are made up of the same things as earth rocks and in fact contained trace amounts of other undesirable things that should not be given to children, she grew slightly offended and told me that her homeopath (wait for it ...), well, he is a doctor before waling out the door. After the visitor left, I told the story to Peter (who is a practicing medical doctor) and Jason and they suggested it was probably just an off-the-shelf iron supplement and we all sighed in relief that she was probably only being scammed. I then promptly spit out the Sikhote. I was able to educate two people who came in about the synergy between hunters, collectors and scientists and hopefully cleared away some of their misconceptions regarding meteorite ownership. My favorite moment was when a 10 or 11 year old boy told me he saw the Novato fire ball. I told him to go tell Jason because he would be really jealous ;-) and ask Jason to show him an actual Novato meteorite. HOW COOL IS THAT All in all, huge kudos to Jason and his family for putting on an incredible event that clearly requires significant effort. The effort is also physical in that they bring in LARGE irons for everyone to enjoy. Yes, I had a customer who was buying up every small vial of NWA 5000 lunar cutting dust I had for sale. He asked if he could buy some off to the side and I said no problem. He was pleased to hear that I had over a pound of it until I told him that the rest was dedicated to a project. I suggested he buy NWA 482 lunar dust instead. He bought a vial of NWA 482 and was not pleased. I asked what the problem was and he admitted that he was adding the dust to saki and drinking it after dinner. He stated that the NWA 482 dust didn't work and that his wife was not happy. He went on to explain that the NWA 5000 dust made him a young man in the bedroom and that if I did not provide him with more that he would leave me negative feedback on eBay. I told him that I would provide him with a gram and that is all I could spare at the time. He then accused me of substituting NWA 482 dust instead of NWA 5000. He then bought a rather large slice to grind up himself. I am sure it was the saki giving him prowess but he believed it was the moon dust. I finally blocked this guy from bidding not wanting to risk negative feedback. I only consume planetary and carbonaceous dust. Iron and stone are for hobos. ;) Sutter's Mill and Murchison are good for regrowing hair, and maintaining good skin tone. Lunar dust encourages ESP and telekinetic powers. Martian dust is a powerful aphrodisiac. NWA stony dust causes constipation. Iron dust causes delusions of grandeur. This commonly manifests in the belief that terrestrial river rocks are meteorites. -- - Web - http://www.galactic-stone.com Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/galacticstone Twitter - http://twitter.com/GalacticStone Pinterest - http://pinterest.com/galacticstone RSS - http://www.galactic-stone.com/rss/126516 - On 4/24/13, Mendy Ouzillou ouzil...@yahoo.com wrote: Ha, depends on whether you are consuming Nantan or Glorieta Mountain. Hi Mendy and List, I'm an open-minded guy. I realize there are forces at work in our universe that science cannot currently explain. However, I believe that all things which are real can and eventually will be explained by science. Electricity would have seemed like witchcraft not that long ago. Magnetism - witchcraft. Gravitation - witchcraft. Of course, science has a pretty good handle on those things now. For a long time, modern medical science poo-poo'ed acupuncture and moxibustion. Now medical science admits there is some merit to these homeopathic methods. Sometimes it just takes science a little while to catch up on what some people know already from practice. Having said that, no sane person can see merit in the belief that lunar meteorite dust is an aphrodisiac. As Mendy mentioned in a prior post - there is nothing in meteorites that doesn't already exist on Earth, albeit some are in minute quantities. If moon dust could improve sexual performance, every meteorite dealer on the planet would be a porn star or a mack daddy. I've consumed moon dust (not for homeopathic reasons), and I can say with humble certainty that my wife was NOT impressed. LOL. However, if anyone reading this wants to buy some meteorite specks and dust to foster their ESP powers - please contact me, I have all you need. Are there many stones from which those of you participating in this discussion have each inhaled the dust? Since the BLM can, now, effectively outlaw commercial distribution of meteorites found on public land here in the U.S., which I surely couldn't have anyway, I've now realized, my only hope left is to make SNL. Creating an anti-crab paste, from an approximation of what you've inhaled, in pursuit of that, may be the most cost effective solution. [meteorite-list] Rare Meteorite Grains May be from Supernova That Sparked Solar System
http://www.space.com/20797-meteorite-supernova-solar-system.html Rare Meteorite Grains May be from Supernova That Sparked Solar System by Clara Moskowitz space.com 24 April 2013 Two surprising grains of sand in a pair of meteorites that landed on Earth suggest they were formed in a single supernova that occurred billions of years ago, new research suggests. These grains may even come from the same star explosion that sparked the formation of the solar system, scientists say. Both meteorites were found in Antarctica, and appear to date from before the solar system was born 4.6 billion years ago. Each contains a single grain of silica (SiO2, which is the main ingredient of sand). The chemical signature of these grains is identical, and extremely rare - so rare, in fact, that scientists suspect both grains came from a single supernova. This type of supernova occurs when a massive star runs out of fuel for nuclear fusion and collapses in on itself in a giant explosion. These are the first such grains found in primitive meteorites, and are distinct because of the type of oxygen contained in the silica. Previous research has uncovered a handful of space rocks containing silica grains enriched in oxygen-17, which is thought to be created by living stars. But a slightly heavier version of oxygen, called oxygen-18, was found in these two new grains. Oxygen-18 must be formed in a supernova. The silica grains are so small they are invisible to the naked eye. Using an instrument called a NanoSIMS 50 ion microprobe, which magnifies objects 20,000 times, graduate student Pierre Haenecour of Washington University in St. Louis uncovered the single grain in one of the meteorites. The other was found by Xuchao Zhao, now a scientist at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing, China, inside a meteorite discovered by the Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition. Haenecour investigated just how the silica grains might have come to be, and found that their formation would have required a complex process of mixing material from various different layers of the star as it exploded. Because the precise mixing required to create oxygen-18 is so specific, the researchers suspect that both silica grains originated in the same supernova. That supernova might even be the same explosion that gave rise to the solar system, the researchers speculated. Scientists think a shock wave from a supernova might have been the event that caused a rotating cloud of gas and dust to condense, eventually giving rise to the planets of our solar system. As it exploded, the supernova also would have seeded the cloud with material, and some of that material may have ended up in the meteorites we find today. The research is detailed in a paper published in the May 1 issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Lunar dust viagra fail - And eBay would allow the idiotic negative feedback to stay. During my last eBay run, I sold a meteorite on to some nutjob who tried to scam me. They filed a PP dispute on the very same day the package was delivered. They tried to claim it never arrived. I had documentation on my side, including the ship/delivery confirmation. I also had several horrible messages they had sent me via the eBay messaging system - these messages made the person look like a raving lunatic. I forwarded everything to eBay and won the dispute case. However, the clown left me a negative feedback and I got tired of jumping through hoops to have it removed - it stayed and is still there. The only negative I had received in almost 15 years on eBay and thousands of transactions without issues. I find that eBay is filled with nutjobs like that. The very last time I sold anything on eBay, a buyer claimed he didn't realize how small a micromount was. Well, the item was accurately described and clearly shown in a good photo. There was also a scale cube for size comparison and I explained the size of the scale cube. Ignorant buyer who was too lazy to do some homework before buying - although displeased, at least they didn't leave a negative feedback. A couple of weeks ago, I briefly bandied around the idea of listing some Chelyabinsk micros on eBay and actually put up a listing. Moments later, I thought better of it and pulled it down. That was the last straw. I haven't sold anything on eBay since and never will again. I'd set a specimen on fire before offering it on eBay. Until eBay changes their buyer-centric rules and reduces their fees (which will never happen), I will never sell anything there. On the other hand, I still buy stuff from eBay sellers - mostly because those particular sellers have no presence outside of eBay and I have no choice. Yes, this guy was serious about leaving negative feedback. He claimed that I cut the one gram of NWA 5000 dust with NWA 482 killing off its potency. He said 50 milligrams of NWA 5000 is enough to make the hair on the back of his neck stand up and that NWA 482 had the opposite effect. He also stated it was like gaining 40 kilograms of muscle for six hours while the material which he claims was cut only lasted for two. Maybe it is the iridium-rich metal in NWA 5000, I don't know. I thought he was joking until he bought a large rated slice with a COA which costs extra. In any case, I would just assume not have customers like that. It creates a lot of stress. [meteorite-list] meteorites vs. tektites on ebay
Is anyone else sick of encountering tektite listings when searching for meteorites on ebay? A search for meteorite yields both meteorites and tektites, a search for tektite yields only tektites, so someone interested in tektites has the capability of viewing only what they want to see while the meteorite enthusiast is stuck with having to wade through a lot of extra crap. The way I see it, tektites are not meteorites, yet sellers of these items are able to add the word meteorite to their listing because ebay has lumped them both into the same category. I just searched meteorite in the meteorites and tektites category and the results were 7,899 listings, a tektite search yielded 1,623 results, this is a ridiculous amount of worthless tektites mixed in with and diluting the more important meteorite listings. I'm prompted to write ebay, to point the situation out and suggest the creation of a separate category for tektites, a category which should also include impactites, but before doing so I'd like to ask if any of you prominent meteorite dealers have a problem with this, am I missing something or does my problem with tektites make sense? By the way, an impactite search yielded a mere 80 results, but again like when searching for tektites, impactites are easily weeded out from all the true meteorite listings, and again a meteorite enthusiast is unable to refine their search and eliminate the impactite listings just as they are unable to eliminate the tektite listings. So the simple creation of a separate category, a tektites and impactites category, would be an improvement for the meteorite buyer and at the same time would have no impact on the tektite or impactite buyer, but I could be wrong about all of this, I admit I could be overlooking some aspect, thus want to ask for input. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

__ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] meteorites vs. tektites on ebay
Hi William, I like tektites, but I don't want meteorite results flooded with them. I encountered the same problem as you. Easy fix. Use this search string : meteorite -tektite That will show only meteorites and will exclude all listings with the word tektite in the title. A few tektites will still sneak through, but you won't see the majority of them. [meteorite-list] Private Asteroid-Mining Project Launching Tiny Satellites in 2014
http://www.space.com/20817-asteroid-mining-satellite-test-flight.html Private Asteroid-Mining Project Launching Tiny Satellites in 2014 by Mike Wall space.com 24 April 2013 A billionaire-backed asteroid-mining company aims to start putting its big plans into action soon, launching its first hardware into space by this time next year. Planetary Resources, which counts Google execs Larry Page and Eric Schmidt among its investors, plans to loft a set of tiny cubesats to Earth orbit in early 2014, to test out gear for its first line of asteroid-prospecting spacecraft. Our belief and our philosophy is that the best testbed is space itself, Chris Voorhees, Planetary Resources' vice president of spacecraft development, said Wednesday (April 24) during a Google+ Hangout event. Despite the fact that we're a deep-space company, we're going to use Earth orbit as much as possible, Voorhees added. For us, it's a valuable learning experience, and that's what we plan on doing one year hence. The cubesats slated for launch in 2014 will measure 12 inches long by 4 inches wide by 4 inches tall (30 by 10 by 10 centimeters), company officials said. These Arkyd-3 satellites will test out technologies for Planetary Resources' Arkyd-100 scouts, which the firm hopes to launch to low-Earth orbit on asteroid-hunting missions in 2015. The Arkyd-3 is the testbed manifestation of our Arkyd-100 spacecraft. It just happens to be flying, Voorhees said. A series of other robotic probes beyond the 33-pound (15 kilograms) Arkyd-100 will investigate near-Earth asteroids up close, eventually mining suitable ones for resources such as water and precious metals. Water is the key focus at first, because it is the key enabler of off-Earth living, Planetary Resources officials said. Water can keep astronauts hydrated, obviously, and serve as a shield against dangerous radiation. Split into its constituent hydrogen and oxygen, it can also provide breathable air and rocket fuel, allowing voyaging spaceships to fill up on the go. Sourcing water in space will make space travel much cheaper and more efficient, Planetary Resources president Chris Lewicki said, noting that it currently costs about $10,000 to launch 1 liter (0.26 gallons) of water to low-Earth orbit. Water is the gateway drug of space. It's the enabler - in a good way, though, Lewicki said. Planetary Resources held Wednesday's Google+ Hangout partly to mark the one-year anniversary of the company's public unveiling. After Planetary Resources announced its existence and intentions last year, another asteroid-mining firm called Deep Space Industries made its presence known as well. Both companies hope their activities help spur humanity's push out into the solar system, officials have said. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - IMB or SMB? The nomenclature of Melts.
Hi List, We keep hearing about the IMB nodules that have been recovered - these have an all-black lithology with no chondrules, shock veins, or grey matrix material. However, these nodules were not created on impact. Had there been such an impact, we would have a visible crater and the nodules would be located in a radius directly adjacent to the crater amidst the ejecta. Instead, these nodules were apparently created during the fragmentation events that took place while the body was still in atmospheric flight. If this is true, shouldn't these nodules be called shock melt and not impact melt ? Is there any distinction in the official nomenclature between an impact melt and a shock melt? Is it correct to continue using IMB in reference to these Chelyabinsk specimens? The explosions in the atmosphere destroy the meteorite, it does not affect the makeup other than destruction or making fusion crust. Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - IMB or SMB? The nomenclature of Melts.
Jeff and Anne I agree about the melt. I noticed a piece were it was black all the way through and when I spoke with who I got the sample from, I was told it was melt, and from my understanding that was cause through impaction in space with other asteroids, and also Mike had also made a point how Chelyabinsk melt can be simular to Cat Mountain. I also notice that the melt is hard to break up, but the magnetic properties is the sample with non melt and melt samples I have. It will be exciting to see how many impacts can be examined from the melt :) Shawn Alan IMCA 1633 ebay store http://www.ebay.com/sch/imca1633ny/m.html http://meteoritefalls.com/ - Original Message - From: Jeff Kuyken i...@meteorites.com.au To: 'Meteorite List' meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Cc: Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2013 10:53 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - IMB or SMB? The nomenclature of Melts. Definitely IMB although you will find variations within different stones. Some will be shocked to the point of melt and others will not quite get there. Personally I think IMB and SMB are the exact same terms as both are melt breccias and shock is derived from impact. The official classification of Chely states: A significant portion (1/3) of the stones consist of a dark, fine-grained impact melt containing mineral and chondrule fragments. http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=57165 I personally don't think nodules is really the correct terminology either. They are just individuals / fragments of the same material shocked to a higher degree in the parent body. For example... compare it to Gao. We don't call the IMB pieces, nodules. They are IMB individuals. The term nodules would seem to me to be better reserved for things like iron nodules in a stony Mesosiderite or a Troilite nodule in an iron meteorite. Good question Mike. Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk - IMB or SMB? The nomenclature of Melts.
Hi Jeff! To me, Impact Melt should mean total melt to liquid...no fragments of any kind.In the case of the classified S4, partial melting occurred, confirmed by fragments. Still, various flavors understandable especially at boundaries. Yep, I think nodules is the keyword that is questionable. Graphite nodules are found in Canyon Diablo, for example. Once they find large enough pieces of this meteorite, they might confirm nodules but they would not be abnormal or a special anomaly if they are impact melt.
