Hi Rob and all! Best I can tell from the videos, without mapping anything, is that the sun is actually very high in the sky which is creating down shadows on object protruding from the buildings. [meteorite-list] Mars Express: A Radiating Beauty on Mars
http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Mars_Express/A_radiating_beauty_on_Mars A radiating beauty on Mars European Space Agency 5 September 2013 Exceptional structures deposited and shaped by water and winds adorn these interlocking craters and sculpt radiating patterns in the sands of Mars. [Image] Becquerel crater in context This mosaic, which focuses on Becquerel crater in Arabia Terra, is composed of four images taken by the high-resolution stereo camera on ESA's Mars Express. Arabia Terra is in the transition zone between the southern highlands and the northern lowlands of Mars. Becquerel crater is named for the 19th-century French physicist Antoine Henri Becquerel (1852-1908), winner of the Nobel Prize in physics in 1903 along with Marie and Pierre Curie for the discovery of radioactivity. It is the largest crater in this scene, with a diameter of 167 km, and drops to a depth of about 3.5 km below the surrounding terrain. A second large crater lies within Becquerel, punching even deeper into the surface, as seen in the Mars Express topography and 3D images. [Image] Becquerel crater topography The perspective view below reveals an intriguing, large mound within Becquerel's crater walls, reminiscent of Mount Sharp in Gale crater, currently being explored by NASA's Curiosity rover. The mound rises about 1 km above the crater floor and comprises hundreds of layers of light-toned sediments, each just a few metres thick, made of sulphate-bearing rocks. On Earth, sulphates are most often formed via the evaporation of water, so the presence of these minerals in Becquerel crater suggests that water may once have pooled here in a vast crater lake, before evaporating away. [Image] Layered mound inside Becquerel crater It is likely that the entire crater floor was once covered with such sediments, but over billions of years much of it has been eroded away by wind, leaving just a polished, rounded mound behind. Similar light-toned sulphate-bearing deposits are seen all over Arabia Terra, including in the crater walls in this scene, pointing to a large-scale process that affected the entire region. One popular theory is that large changes in the tilt of the rotational axis of Mars leads to significant changes in its climate, reflected in the thickness and repeating patterns found in the layers of sediment. A change in the environmental conditions would affect the way in which the sediments were initially deposited, as well as their subsequent resistance to erosion. The deposits were laid down 3.8-3.5 billion years ago, at a time when Mars was evolving from a warm, wet world into the cold and dry planet we see today. [Image] Wind-blown sediments around Becquerel crater Although water may no longer flow on the Red Planet, wind still plays a key role in shaping the environment. Dark dunes and wind-blown sediments streak through this scene, in vivid contrast to the bright mound. Rather than having originated locally, the dark material inside Becquerel crater likely blew in from elsewhere - perhaps even from volcanic eruptions. A dark streak seems to drag the material out from the craters in a wide swath towards the upper left of the main colour image (bottom right of the perspective view above). A number of tiny craters with tail-like structures lie along this track: their raised rims influence the flow of wind over them such that the material immediately downwind of the crater remains undisturbed in comparison to the surrounding, exposed plains. Another streak of dust follows a radial path out of Becquerel crater; it likely traces out a gentle topographic depression, beyond the eroded rim of the neighbouring old crater. Meanwhile, dark sediments inside the small crater towards the far left of the main image appear to have been blown out in a similar direction by the powerful prevailing wind. [Image] Becquerel crater in 3D These blowing sands continue to change the martian landscape even today, exposing ancient rock formations in some locations, while eradicating or covering younger features in others. Detailed studies of these wind-blown patterns can often yield interesting insights into the history of the Red Planet. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Spectacular Fireball Outshines Moon Over American Southeast (Video)
http://www.space.com/22637-fireball-brighter-than-moon-video.html Spectacular Fireball Outshines Moon Over American Southeast (Video) By Mike Wall space.com September 4, 2013 A dazzlingly bright fireball lit up the skies over the American South last week, and NASA caught the dramatic action on video. The meteor blazed up in the predawn hours of Aug. 28, putting on a brief but spectacular show for night owls in several southeastern states. Recorded by all six NASA cameras in the Southeast, this fireball was one of the brightest observed by the network in 5 years of operations, Bill Cooke, head of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., wrote in a blog post Tuesday (Sept. 3). From Chickamauga, Georgia, the meteor was 20 times brighter than the full moon; shadows were cast on the ground as far south as Cartersville. The asteroid that sparked the sky show was probably about 2 feet wide and weighed more than 100 pounds, Cooke added. The space rock hit Earth's atmosphere above the Georgia/Tennessee border at 3:27 a.m. EDT (0727 GMT) on Aug. 28, moving northeast at 56,000 mph. The meteor began to break apart in the skies northeast of Ocoee, Tenn., at an altitude of 33 miles, Cooke wrote. NASA cameras lost track of the fireball pieces at an altitude of 21 miles, by which time they had slowed to a speed of 19,400 mph, Cooke wrote. Sensors on the ground recorded sound waves ('sonic booms') from this event, and there are indications on Doppler weather radar of a rain of small meteoritic particles falling to the ground east of Cleveland, Tennessee. Every day, more than 100 tons of material - most of it grains of dust and other tiny pieces of asteroids and comets - bombards Earth from outer space. Virtually all of this stuff burns up harmlessly in the atmosphere, sometimes generating the bright streaks in the sky that we call meteors, or shooting stars, in the process. If a meteor blazes more brightly than Venus in the sky, it's classified as a fireball. NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office has set up a network of cameras to track and study fireballs, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of where their parent space rocks are coming from. Such information should be helpful to spacecraft designers, NASA officials say. The space agency's All-sky Fireball Network currently consists of 12 cameras. Six of them are in the Southeast (spread across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee), while two apiece are in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Mexico. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

hello again listoids, well just a short note to explain, that nwa7034 and pairing has a very distinctive spécification in the morphologie of the stone the melted chondrule present in this martian basaltic breccia appear to be pebbles of martian soil. wich is unique confirmation of similarity of ingredient of the martian soil and nwa704 morphologie, you can see those pebbles here in this photo a little right in center , actualy there is an other fantome of an other left http://www.flickr.com/photos/azizhabibi/9680084713/ thanks aziz habibi ___ dear listoids i have for sale , 3 small fragment of nwa7034 most likely paired, in opinion as you know its me who got most of the nwa7034 paraing from the original mainmass to many other stones that have some collecters over the planets.. one fragment is 1.6 gr and is magneficent because its show all the ingredient of nwa7034 martian and show this typical basalt breccia; the melted sphere that is unique for nwa 7034 martian i have 0.2 gr and 0.3 gr and 1.6 gr all are nice please email for prices photo can be seen here http://www.flickr.com/photos/azizhabibi/ aziz habibi __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] SUTTER’S MILL: USING COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY TO CURATE SCIENTIFICALLY IMPORTANT METEORITES
Hello Listers The amount of news coverage Sutter Mill got when it first fell, one has to wondered what are some of the scientific implications from that fall? I came across this article that covers some cool topics on the fall and other falls. I wonder what's in store for Sutter's Mill and will it prove to be a diamond in the rough? Wallace1,3 D. S. Ebel1,4, and M. G. Hill2,5 1Dept. of Earth and Planetary Sciences, American Museum of Natural History, New York, NY 2Microscopy and Imaging Facility, American Museum of Natural His-tory, 3swall...@amnh.org 4de...@amnh.org 5mh...@amnh.org Introduction: Meteorites in scientific collections are an important resource to the research community. Getting the most science return out of a collection re-quires both maximizing research return from each sample and effectively communicating the nature of available samples to prospective researchers. Previous studies have discussed X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) as a screening or curation tool for extraterrestrial samples [1-4]. Flynn et al. [2] suggested the use of synchrotron CT to screen returned mission samples prior to targeting specific areas for laboratory study, but did not discuss curation. Tsuchiyama et al. [3] used a commercial CT system to inform sectioning of the Kobe (CK4) meteorite fall of 1999 for dissemination. Both these systems have drawbacks in the context of curation of museum collections. Synchrotron CT re-quires abundant and rapidly available beam time, and is most appropriate for small samples [4]. Older com-mercial CT systems lack sufficient power and resolu-tion for high-quality imaging. Current advances in X-ray Computed Tomography have allowed institutions such as museums to acquire smaller footprint, higher powered CT machines that do not require extensive staffing or intensive maintenance. This advancement allows for museums to nondestructively analyze speci-mens before destructive analysis, to guide destructive sampling (e.g., sectioning) using 3D images, and to make data available for public outreach, both to peer researchers and to the public at large. source: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2013/pdf/2297.pdf __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] AD: Some Meteorite Specimens and . Check this out!
And allow me to offer here the Premier issue of your Meteorite Hunter newsletter (spring 2010). A rare collector's item indeed, as it was the only issue ever published. Asking price is only $25, which (coincidentally) was the price for an alleged subscription at the time. Anyone?
