[meteorite-list] NASA Instruments on European Comet Spacecraft Begin Activation Countdown (Rosetta)

RELEASE 14-033

NASA Instruments on European Comet Spacecraft Begin Activation Countdown

Three NASA science instruments are being prepared for check-out operations
aboard the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft, which is set to become
the first to orbit a comet and land a probe on its nucleus in November.

Rosetta was reactivated Jan. 20 after a record 957 days in hibernation. U.S.
mission managers are scheduled to activate their instruments on the
spacecraft in early March and begin science operations with them in August.
The instruments are an ultraviolet imaging spectrograph, a microwave
thermometer and a plasma analyzer.

U.S. scientists are delighted the Rosetta mission gives us a chance to
examine a comet in a way we've never seen one before -- in orbit around it
and as it kicks up in activity, said Claudia Alexander, Rosetta's U.S.
project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
Calif. The NASA suite of instruments will provide puzzle pieces the
Rosetta science team as a whole will put together with the other pieces to
paint a portrait of how a comet works and what it's made of.

Rosetta's objective is to observe the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko up
close. By examining the full composition of the comet's nucleus, and the ways
in which a comet changes, Rosetta will help scientists learn more about the
origin and evolution of our solar system and the role comets may have played
in seeding Earth with water, and perhaps even life.

The ultraviolet imaging spectrograph, called Alice, will analyze gases in the
tail of the comet, as well as the coma, the fuzzy envelope around the nucleus
of the comet. The coma develops as a comet approaches the sun. Alice also
will measure the rate at which the comet produces water, carbon monoxide and
carbon dioxide. These measurements will provide valuable information about
the surface composition of the nucleus. The instrument also will measure the
amount of argon present, an important clue about the temperature of the solar
system at the time the comet's nucleus originally formed more than 4.6
billion years ago.

The Microwave Instrument for Rosetta Orbiter will identify chemicals on or
near the comet's surface and measure the temperature of the chemicals and the
dust and ice jetting out from the comet. The instrument also will see the
gaseous activity in the tail through coma.

The Ion and Electron Sensor is part of a suite of five instruments to analyze
the plasma environment of the comet, particularly the coma. The instrument
will measure the charged particles in the sun's outer atmosphere, or solar
wind, as they interact with the gas flowing out from the comet while Rosetta
is drawing nearer to the comet's nucleus.

NASA also provided part of the electronics package the Double Focusing Mass
Spectrometer, which is part of the Swiss-built Rosetta Orbiter Spectrometer
for Ion and Neutral Analysis (ROSINA) instrument. ROSINA will be the first
instrument with sufficient resolution to separate two molecules with
approximately the same mass: molecular nitrogen and carbon monoxide. Clear
identification of nitrogen will help scientists understand conditions at the
time the solar system was born.

U.S. science investigators are partnering on several non-U.S. instruments and
are involved in seven of the mission's 21 instrument collaborations. NASA has
an American interdisciplinary scientist involved in the research. NASA's Deep
Space Network (DSN) is supporting the European Space Agency's (ESA's) Ground
Station Network for spacecraft tracking and navigation.

Rosetta, composed of an orbiter and lander, is flying beyond the main
asteroid belt. Its lander will obtain the first images taken from the surface
of a comet, and it will provide the first analysis of a comet's composition
by drilling into the surface. Rosetta also will be the first spacecraft to
witness, at close proximity, how a comet changes as it is subjected to the
increasing intensity of the sun's radiation.

The potential research and data from the Rosetta mission could help inform
NASA's asteroid initiative -- a mission to identify, capture and relocate an
asteroid for astronauts to explore. The initiative represents an
unprecedented technological feat that will lead to new scientific discoveries
and technological capabilities that will help protect our home planet and
achieve the goal of sending humans to an asteroid by 2025.

Future robotic and human exploration missions to Mars, an asteroid and
beyond will be accomplished via

[meteorite-list] James Webb Space Telescope Passes a Mission Milestone

RELEASE 14-026

James Webb Space Telescope Passes a Mission Milestone

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has passed its first significant mission
milestone for 2014 -- a Spacecraft Critical Design Review (SCDR) that
examined the telescope's power, communications and pointing control systems.

This is the last major element-level critical design review of the program,
said Richard Lynch, NASA Spacecraft Bus Manager for the James Webb Space
Telescope at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. What that
means is all of the designs are complete for the Webb and there are no major
designs left to do.

During the SCDR, the details, designs, construction and testing plans, and
the spacecraft's operating procedures were subjected to rigorous review by an
independent panel of experts. The week-long review involved extensive
discussions on all aspects of the spacecraft to ensure the plans to finish
construction would result in a vehicle that enables the powerful telescope
and science instruments to deliver their unique and invaluable views of the
universe.

While the spacecraft that carries the science payload for Webb may not be as
glamorous as the telescope, it's the heart that enables the whole mission,
said Eric Smith, acting program director and program scientist for the Webb
Telescope at NASA Headquarters in Washington. By providing many services
including telescope pointing and communication with Earth, the spacecraft is
our high tech infrastructure empowering scientific discovery.

Goddard Space Flight Center manages the mission. Northrop Grumman in Redondo
Beach, Calif., leads the design and development effort.

Our Northrop Grumman team has worked exceptionally hard to meet this
critical milestone on an accelerated schedule, following the replan, said
Scott Willoughby, Northrop Grumman vice president and James Webb Space
Telescope program manager in Redondo Beach, Calif. This is a huge step
forward in our progress toward completion of the Webb Telescope.

The James Webb Space Telescope, successor to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope,
will be the most powerful space telescope ever built. It will observe the
most distant objects in the universe, provide images of the first galaxies
formed and see unexplored planets around distant stars. The Webb telescope is
a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space
Agency.

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: January 16-21, 2014

2014-01-24 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Celebrating 10-Years on Mars! - sols 3548-3553,
Jan. 16, 2014-Jan. 21, 2014:

Opportunity is up on 'Solander Point' at the rim of Endeavour Crater.
Opportunity is positioned on the edge of an exposed outcrop where
orbital observations suggest the possible presence of small amounts of
clay minerals.

Opportunity landed on Mars on Jan. 24, 2004 PST (Jan. 25, 2004 UTC) on
what was to be a three-month mission, but instead the rover has lived
beyond its prime mission and roved the planet for nearly 10 years.
Mission highlights, including a gallery of selected images from both
rovers is at http://mars.nasa.gov/mer10/ .

The rover is continuing to investigate this curious surface rock, called
'Pinnacle Island' that apparently was kicked up by the rover during a
recent traverse. On Sol 3548 (Jan. 16, 2014), Opportunity repositioned
the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) on Pinnacle Island for an
overnight integration, documenting the placement with a Microscopic
Imager (MI) finder frame. On Sol 3551 (Jan. 19, 2014), the rover again
repositioned the APXS on Pinnacle Island for a multi-sol integration,
documenting the new placement with a Microscopic Image finder frame and
front Hazards Avoidance Camera (Hazcam) images.

As of Sol 3553 (Jan. 21, 2014), the solar array energy production was
361 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.595 and a solar
array dust factor of 0.594.

Total odometry is 24.07 miles (38.73 kilometers).

2014-01-24 Thread Anne Black

Hello,

Zelimir Gabelica is having some computer-related problems, so he asked
me to forward his announcement regarding the Ensisheim show, less than
5 months away, to all of you.

Enjoy!

ENSISHEIM “METEORITE 2014” NEWS

(January 24, 2014)

Dear meteorite friends Meteorite-Central List,

Please find here down preliminary news concerning the 15th edition of
our meteorite show “Ensisheim-Meteorite 2014”, a very special event.

Indeed, this year, we will celebrate the dual 15th anniversary of our
show and the 30th anniversary of our Brotherhood (Confraternity)
founding.

This info anticipates (end completes) the official flyer expected to be
finalized in a few weeks (days ?) that will be soon included on our web
site (www.ville-ensisheim.fr) and that I will be glad to forward you
individually, upon request.

Further show short news will be also sent to the List when appropriate,
as every year. This first announcement is for those wishing to attend
the show, book tables or foresee other related specific arrangements.

I expect this message will reach you in time before your gathering at
the next “Tucson blast”.

SHOW LOCATION AND DATES

Saturday June 21 (9:30-18:00) and Sunday June 22 (9:30-16:00), 2014 (as
always, the weekend preceding the “Mineral Gem Show” that is held in
Ste Marie-aux-Mines, relatively nearby).

The show location is, as last year, in the Regency Palace in “downtown
Ensisheim”, next to the main church.

The Palace reconstruction is again postponed to some “near future”.
Maps and traveling indications could be found soon on the following two
web sites:

* Ensisheim City: www.ville-ensisheim.fr

* The “St Georges Confraternity”:
www.confrerie-gardiens-meteorite-ensisheim.fr

TABLE RENTING AND RESERVATION

Despite the ever increasing demand, the total number of dealer tables
must remain limited to about 55 (currently about 45-60 dealers). All
tables are equal in size (160 x 80 cm). Price is per table, NOT per
meter.

This year the table price had to be increased by about 10% for various
obvious reasons. The new prices are: 1 table: 155 euro; 2 tables: 300
euro; 3 tables: 430 euro; 4 tables: 560 euro….

Please plan your own lighting if needed (strictly limited to 250
W/table !).

All past dealers/guests have full priority to reserve their last year
table(s). Those who did not come last year (2013) had lost their
priority and should be considered as “newcomers”.

For the 2014 booking, we urgently encourage our regular guests to do
that ASAP, preferably before the end of April 2014 (slightly flexible
deadline). Even if you already had reserved “implicitly” or “think that
you have reserved”, please apply again and confirm (or cancel) your
table. This is not to bother you further but to make sure our
computerized files are updated for 2014.

As per today January 24, nothing is considered as booked for anyone, so
from now on, the reservations can start! It is better to hurry to
reserve if you want to come again, as we already have newcomers on a
waiting list!

After April 30, we will consider a re-attributing of the last year
guest’s former places.

The organizers will attribute to the newcomers the layout of places
within any of the 3 halls in the most appropriate way so as to meet as
many wishes as possible.

Note that the “Regency”, “Egloff” and “Pas Perdus” halls are all
equivalent, as the public must inevitably walk through the 3 halls.

Important for table attribution to newcomers: as always, “first come,
first served”!

Please if you are a regular guest but can’t come this year, be kind and
notify us ASAP for your canceling.

For the reservation, just write me! (E-mail is the most reliable
contact, phone being not at all recommended as I am running “here and
there” in erratic hours and days). My mail remains unchanged:

“Zelimir” zelimir.gabel...@uha.fr

To avoid money transfer complications and bank fee, we accept you pay
the table renting cash to the treasurer on Saturday morning.

Since we don’t require pre-payment, it would be very fair if, in case
of cancellation, you notify us enough in advance so that we can rent
your stall to those who are on a waiting list.

All dealers must specify the names of ALL persons occupying their table
(ideally 1 person per table, though 2 persons can be allowed for only
one table reserved).

Names are needed for us to write the corresponding badges that are
limited as follows: 1 table reserved, 1 or 2 badges attributed; 2
tables, up to 3 badges; 3 tables, up to 4 badges, etc.

People without badges are not considered as dealers, can’t occupy
tables, nor are allowed to sell meteorites elsewhere within the
buildings or on the main square.

Friday June 20 is the DEALER’S DAY devoted for tables/booth set up.

The Regency halls are exclusively open to dealers (14:00 - 18:00), and
NOT to the public.
