Re: [meteorite-list] Add Ivory Coast Tektite

2014-02-04 Thread Alexander Seidel
I was lucky enough to look through the stock Alain has and purchased a 4.55g
specimen. I thought it was the prettiest of the lot though they are
all pretty. My very first tektite purchase! Mendy Ouzillou

Hi Mendy,

your very first tektite purchase really an Ivory Coast Tektite? Well, if so,
you
start at a rather high end, top level there. But haven´t you seen the very
beautiful
Czech moldavites before? Sometimes you also have to pay premium prices for
these, as
there are some really outstanding specimen on the marketplace, but anyway it is
the
usual starter with tektites.

P.S.: while moving, I recently looked at an almost perfect flanged button
Australite
in my own private collection, which was sort of locked away long ago. These
small
goodies also command quite high prices nowadays, if they are perfect or near
perfect.

Anyway, Mendy - have a look at the moldavites, they can be VERY, VERY
beautiful! And
there is a definite connection with the Ries Crater in Germany, so you will
have a
nice piece with both coordinates in space and time... :-)

  Hi All
I stopped by Alain Carions room and he had recently purchased a lot of
Ivory Coast tektites. Previously if you have ever seen one you would
be very lucky. I have only ever seen 3 in 20 years of selling
meteorites. The price would also reflect the rarity. It would probably
be in the $1500-$2000 range. The provenance on these is impeccable.
They were originally collected in a cotton field over a ten year
period in the 1950's to 1960. They were purchased from the original
finders grandson. He only brought 30 with him. He does have more but
  no telling how long they will last. I have a 5.38 g and a 4.03g. I
will price them at only $200 per gram. So if you are interested in one
let me know ASAP. I will add postage to each order.

[meteorite-list] NASA Mars Rover Curiosity's Color View of Likely Route West

2014-02-04 Thread Ron Baalke

NASA Mars Rover's Color View of Likely Route West
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
February 03, 2014

The team operating NASA's Curiosity Mars rover will likely drive the rover
westward over a dune and across a valley with fewer sharp rock hazards
than alternative routes.

A final decision on whether to pass through this valley will ride on evaluation
of a short drive planned this week toward the top of the dune that lies
across Dingo Gap. The dune is about 3 feet (1 meter) high at its center,
tapered off at both sides of the gap between two low scarps. A color view
assembled from images taken by Curiosity's Mast Camera (Mastcam) on the
east side of the dune shows details of the valley that the rover may traverse
this month.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess ancient
habitable environments and major changes in Martian environmental conditions.
JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,
built the rover and manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate
in Washington.

For more information about Curiosity, visit http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/msl
, http://www.nasa.gov/msl and http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/. You can follow
the mission on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/marscuriosity and on

[meteorite-list] hunting in northern CA?

2014-02-04 Thread Douglas Chenin, DDS

Hello everyone,
I'm new to meteorite hunting and would like to find some place to roam
around near me. I live in northern CA near San Francisco. Does anybody
know of any sites around here that are good for hunting? I'm willing to
drive a few hours of course, but it would be great if there was
something close by. Are there any strewnfields close by? or what is the
nearest?

Thanks!
Doug
