[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: April 25-30, 2014

2014-05-09 Thread Ron Baalke via Meteorite-list

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Reset and Recovery - sols 3645-3649, April 25,
2014-April 30, 2014:

Opportunity is exploring south of "Solander Point" on the west rim of
Endeavour Crater. The rover is headed to a region of aluminum-hydroxyl
clay minerals detected from orbit.

On Sol 3645 (April 25, 2014), Opportunity experienced a reset caused by
write errors in flash (non-volatile) memory. As a result, the rover
halted the sol's planned activities and waited for instructions from the
ground. On Sol 3648 (April 29, 2014), the rover team sent commands to
Opportunity to clear the fault conditions, to initialize both the
high-gain antenna and the Pancam Mast Assembly, and to resume normal
sequence control. Flash-induced resets have been seen three times before
on Opportunity. Engineers are investigating the possible cause.

On Sol 3649 (April 30, 2014), the rover drove just over 230 feet (70
meters) southward. With backward driving, the rover's right-front wheel
currents have returned to lower levels, compared to elevated currents
experienced recently.

As of Sol 3649, solar-array energy production was 624 watt-hours, with
an uncalibrated atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.293 and a solar-array
dust factor of 0.832. Perfectly clean solar arrays would have a dust
factor of 1.0, so the larger the dust factor, the cleaner the arrays.

Total odometry is 24.37 miles (39.22 kilometers).

I'm pleased that his name is being remembered around the world at this
point. His death was quite a shock as, along with Martin, we were both
working with him on projects. (I spent over half an hour on the phone
to him a few days ago) He was a very kind, brilliant and inspiring
man. "A star amongst stars". and his lecture shows just that.

2014-05-09 Thread Martin Goff via Meteorite-list
Hi Kevin, all,

Thank you for your double thumbs up regarding Colin Pillinger's
Faraday lecture. It was the second time I had posted a link to it here
but felt that it was such a good example of the persona of Colin
Pillinger that it needed a repeat post so that people could watch it
and celebrate the life of such a great character now sadly no longer
with us.

I cannot recommend it enough, like Kevin says full of insights into
the history of key events within the field of meteoritics and laced
with his customary sense of humour. Seeing as the prize is awarded for
excellence in communicating science I think the lecture is a superb
example of why the award was so well deserved :-)

Kevin writes 'did you know the Wold Cottage was a mansion?'  Well it
is indeed and Colin was great friends with Derek and Katrina Gray, the
owners of the Wold Cottage. I have stayed there numerous times and
cannot recommend it enough as i and my family have just booked another
stay for a week this summer :-)

Team Meteorite:

The 'Michael Faraday Prize Lecture' video linked here yesterday in a
list member's heartfelt obituary for the late Professor Colin
Pillinger earns a 'two thumbs up' from this reviewer.

Professor Pillinger offers insights into the falls of Ensisheim,
Sienna, Wold Cottage and Chassigny full of content I have never known,
and I consider myself somewhat of a met history buff. Did you know
that 'Wold Cottage' was a mansion? That the owner's sense of humor was
exposed when he named his black dog, 'Snowball'?

The photos and drawings used to illustrate Pillinger's stories were
also unknown to me, and are exquisite. I wish for copies to hang over
the fireplace.

And speaking of dogs, Professor Pillinger calls the Nakhla dog story
apocalyptic. And I'm here to tell you well, you know how I feel
about that :>)

A discussion of ALH84001 and EETA79001 and their revealed carbonates
led him to state, "Life on Mars could be contemporary."

But here's some words to consider, as we all soon enough will be
'falling stars'...

Hi Kevin,

I watched the video yesterday and wholeheartedly concur with you. Very
interesting talk by an engaging boffin, and a lot of the information was
new to me. I'm very sorry to read of the loss of such an excellent
meteorite ambassador at a young age.

One correction: Prof. Pillinger didn't say the Nakhla dog story was apocalyptic

he said apocryphal. Just a little bit of a difference there! ;-) --Rob

It may depend on the choice of email client. I'm not seeing any
differences (using Thunderbird). I still see the sender in the "From"
field. If I click "Reply" it still goes to the sender. If I click "Reply
all" it still goes to the list and everyone else. If I click "Reply
list" (which I'm using here) it just goes to the list email. No need to
manually paste anything in.

Hi Michael,

Here is a copy of an e-mail from Art:

The only downside from this fix is that if you click "Reply" or "Reply All"
to a posting the reply will only go to the member and not back to the list
as well. If you would like to reply to an email and have it go to the list
as well please paste the list address "meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com"
into the "To" field. I apologize for this inconvenience and hopefully this
issue will be fixed as well at some point.

So remember, when replying to a list email that you want the list copied on,
please paste meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com into the "To" field.

Thanks again to IMCA's Bob Falls!

Yesterday there seemed to be a BIG change in the list...
All posts were identified as coming from "Meteorite List"
Instead of from the sender as it has always done before.

Does anyone know why? It made it Much easier in the Past to quickly decide
what posts you wanted to read And often which you didn't care to read - or
which first, Etc.

I always read every post Bernd, Anne Black, Pual Harris, And several other
wrote, usually read most of the others And rarely read some and never read a
few (over the years).

This new system makes it so you don't know who wrote What until you are at
the end of the post and/or hit "Resend All."

While one can still prioritize by topic one can no longer prioritize By
sender.

Is this temporary? Did I miss a post from Art about the change?
When I noticed it no one commented at all.
Whazzup?

Best to all,
Michael (Blood)

2014-05-09 Thread Ed Deckert via Meteorite-list

Michael,

Something strange is happening. I am getting emails from "name of sender
via Meteorite List." Take a look below at the header from your original
message that I just received - it says: "From: "Michael Blood via Meteorite
List."

This may have to do with the email program that you are using, and/or your
ISP. I am using Microsoft Outlook Express, and have Time Warner's
Roadrunner Internet Service.

I sent an email to Art yesterday about this, but did not hear back.
Additionally, when I hit "Reply All" the Meteorite List address and the
Sender's address both populate. This disagrees with what others are
apparently experiencing.

This is just my experience, and your mileage apparently varies.

Does anyone know why? It made it Much easier in the
Past to quickly decide what posts you wanted to read
And often which you didn't care to read - or which first,
Etc.

I always read every post Bernd, Anne Black, Pual Harris,
And several other wrote, usually read most of the others
And rarely read some and never read a few (over the years).

This new system makes it so you don't know who wrote
What until you are at the end of the post and/or hit
"Resend All."

While one can still prioritize by topic one can no longer prioritize
By sender.

Is this temporary? Did I miss a post from Art about the change?
When I noticed it no one commented at all.
Whazzup?

Best to all,
Michael (Blood)

Re: [meteorite-list] List change

2014-05-09 Thread Peter Scherff via Meteorite-list
Good Afternoon List;

The recent list issues regarding several email providers (Yahoo, AOL, etc.)
seem to be behind us and I have re-enabled all of those accounts. Thanks to
input from Bob Falls I was able to take advantage of some changes my service
provider put into place and this should take care of the bounce problems.

Best Regards, Art

Art Jones

Yesterday there seemed to be a BIG change in the list...
All posts were identified as coming from "Meteorite List"
Instead of from the sender as it has always done before.

Does anyone know why? It made it Much easier in the Past to quickly decide
what posts you wanted to read And often which you didn't care to read - or

While one can still prioritize by topic one can no longer prioritize By
sender.

Hi All,

Thanks for all the responses. 87 people say it's basalt, zero say otherwise, so
case closed.
