Re: [meteorite-list] Seafloor Data Point to Global Volcanism after Chicxulub Impact

2018-02-07 Thread Sterling K. Webb via Meteorite-list
Paul, List,

The real mystery about Chicxulub
is its SIZE for so recent a date.
Or another way of putting it is to
ask how an object that big could
keep crossing the Earth's orbit for
all those billions of years without
deliverng us a good smack?

There's a theory that Chixcy is a
by-product of the breakup of the
large asteroid 298 Baptistina about
160 million years ago, and Chixcy
got tossed our way and managed
to nail us in only 100 million years.

That I can believe...

It's an interesting notion, and it
models well. I quote it: "...lines of
evidence, however, suggest that
the impact flux from kilometre-
sized bodies increased by at least
a factor of two over the long-term
average during the past ∼100 Myr."

I see that the journal Nature
wants you to buy the article, but
you can download a PDF of the
actual article for free from here:
http://www.boulder.swri.edu/~bottke/Reprints/Bottke_2007_Nature_449_48_Baptistina_KT.pdf

Knowledge wants to be free,
doesn't it?

I used the high estimate of all items when comparing prices. Even the
low estimate price per gram is four time higher than any other planetary
meteorite in this premier auction when comparing apples to apples.

Of course "Big John M.D", The list self-appointed list sheriff had to
chime in with his nonsense.

Re: [meteorite-list] AD -Auctions Ending Tonight and Tomorrow

2018-02-07 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
And you seem to think that you can hide behind "the rules" while you insult
people.

Sorry. You cannot...

As for NWA 5000,
NWA 5000 is certainly an attractive meteorite (when the cut is large enough to
see it), and it goes without saying that the main mass was a very big lunar
indeed.

However, beauty and size do not matter much to scientists who study most
everything at the molecular and microscopic levels (and who have studied this
to death) and while beauty is important to collectors, it is mostly absent in
nearly any sub-gram specimen of NWA 5000, which are the only truly affordable
specimens for the average collector.

So sorry to say it, but the endless hype about it being "legendary" and "the
highest rated lunar in the world" gets really tired after a while...

Oh and some open questions to the list:

Highest rated by what scale? What organization? What true standard for "rating"
meteorites even exists? FYI, there is none... ;-)

Legendary by comparison to Allende? Murchison? Orguiel? Cape York? Sorry... NWA
5000 doesn't hold a candle to the real legends of meteorite history.

Last buy not least, my medical doctorate is very real. Much more so than the
"legendary" status NWA 5000. ;-)

Gotta get back to balancing room 2103's sodium now, so this will be my last
response to you, Adam.

Goodbye.

[meteorite-list] Will somebody in Tucson please put together another Meteorite Men TOV show?

2018-02-07 Thread E.P. Grondine via Meteorite-list

Hi all -

I wish I was there to enjoy it, but I'm headed back to the field here, so
perhaps next year.Given all of the new specimens flooding the market right now,
(and boy do I wish I as there with cash in my pocket to take advantage of the
current low prices)the prices need to go back up to finance the meteorite
hunters.
The best way I can think of building the market is by a new television show.I
have long thought that shows could be put together from existing videos and
photos of earlier hunts, but hie would require co-operation.
Good sales,all
