 PULL, HEAVY THUD

When This Meteor Fell in .

Springfield, Ills., Nov. 17. - Early Saturday night a huge meteor
fell
in the barn lot of W.C. Murphy, who resides one-half mile east of
Rochester,
a village six miles east of Springfield.
The meteor struck the ground with a dull, heavy thud, and its
brilliancy
illuminated the country for a considerable distance as it flashed to the
ground. When the meteor struck is a hole in the ground two or three feet
deep. Early Sunday morning Mr. Murphy heard of the meteor and many people
flocked to the farm to see it. It is as large as an ordinary barrel.

 (end)

Article refers to the Bath Furnace meteorite. The meteorite was not found
at this location, but did fall at this time about 400 miles away. It is
 likely the same meteor seen.

 Mike and List,
Must we always get our laughs at the expense of
others? I realize there are some reasons and some
truths expressed in this humour but is it only a way
to get back at the individual for certain infractions

Re: [meteorite-list] Mystery object in photo Park Forest

2004-12-07 Thread Comcast Mail
The angle of impact truly tells very little.

When I arrived on Winslow St. in Park Forest 90% of the fragments that
shattered from a multi kilo individual that impacted in the street landed on
the south side of the St.
So I assumed that the meteorite had come from the north.
Then a few weeks later a local called me and showed me a 1243 gram
individual that he pulled out of the ground.
He also said that the impact hole wasn't completely vertical. The meteorite
impacted on a 70 degree angle as though it came from the north.
Obviously very strange considering the meteor came from the southwest.

I would argue that determining the angle of a fall from the sort of dent
it
makes in a car is far from a precise science! To my own eye, the dent in
the
Peekskill car appears to have been made by something striking largely
from
above, not at any sort of shallow angle.

Peekskill was more than a dent, it went competely through the car! It
left
a sizable hole through the trunk. I've seen the car in person, and the
angle
of the hole is clearly at a non-vertical angle. Also, the meteorite just
missed the gas tank just by a few inches!

Re: [meteorite-list] Question about oriented meteorites

2004-12-06 Thread Comcast Mail
Well,

The Orientated form should only be used in the word Orientation .I dont
think Orientated is even a word. Even though a few on the list use that form

Oriented is the proper way to describe a meteorite that had a stablized
flight path.

Just my 2 cents

   Here it is, just loaded.
 Mike

First of all.. WOW!! Awesome specimen, Mike!

Secondly, this is a good time to ask a question that
I've wondered about now and then. I, too would have
used the exact word oriented to describe this
stone, and I know that is correct. But I often see
other list members using the term orientated (with
an extra -at-in the word). So my question is: Are
both terms proper, or is oriented the ONLY correct
term to use to describe such a meteorite as this?

Thanks for any help with this question,

  Hi Mike,

It is customary in British/European reports to use periods
instead of commas for easier reading of large numbers. So
while 47.015 grams means 47.015 grams to you and me, in this
case it should be interpreted as 47,015 grams (47.015 kg).

If we talking just about numbers I have different category question,
mainly
 to US people.
Something what make me always angry when I see it on eBay becouse this
make
for me misunderstanding of what seller want to sell.
I talking about WHY some of You write .5g when normally this should be
 0.5g
This is any slang or You alvays write this also in official documents

Becouse this damn DOT is too little too see it on first reading.
Im just curious why You not write this zero :))

PS. I usually see it on Mike and Hupes auctions, and maybe others too (now
cant find it), so this is any US language rule or what ?

  Hello Rob and All,
  In Response to this:

The object weighing 47.015 kg with a 4.75 specific gravity was
   fallen...
  ...
it could still be another type of meteorite (meso or pallasite?)
  Rob [Matson]

A mesosiderite or pallasite seems pretty improbable -- if the density
  of iron is 7.874g/cm^3,
then either this meteorite has verrry little iron in it and is a stony
or it's made of half iron and half air (or some other nearly
  weightless substance [yeah right]).

Just a short not of excuse because I haven't responded to any

with our grandsons, went to Xmas fairs (proper word?) in our

  Hi Greg,

I notice that the Amgalas in your photos look very brown. Some other
photos posted to the list show a very black fusion crust. Is it a
difference in the amount of weathering?

  Thanks,

  Mike Fowler
  Chicago

  Dear Frank and List,

This is a fun subject. I knew I had a few oriented Amgala's in my
collection, but when I looked through the 3 kilos or so of material I
  have,
I found that I have 20 oriented Amgala's. Most are 100% crusted and have
excellent features such as lip-over, flow lines and frothing, along with
some that have a nice florescent sheen on the trailing end. There are
  a
few that are just the beginning of orientation where you can see the
  black,
thicker crust starting to roll over the less burnt brown layer.

Since I have so many, there is no need for me to hold all of these.
  What I
will do is consider the highest offer on any of these 20 specimens. I
  will
review all offers until Monday, December 6, 11:00PM EST (USA). I will
contact the highest bidder and let them know if I accept their offer. I
  will
most likely accept the highest bids so do not be bashful with your
  offers. I
will not end one early as to give everyone a fair chance to make an
  offer up
  until the deadline.

Aside from all this hustle about Bengrir, his first name is Aziz,
the family name is Habibi. Although I do not speak Arabic, I do
know what his first name and his family name mean but, of course,
it is not up to me to disclose such information.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing about Bengrir's classification
and glad to see that the recent stormy weather on this list has
finally abated and list members talk meteorites again instead of

Do you really think it would be that easy for the morrocans to replicate a

I sure hope there are pics of this crater

 Matteo,

 crater.
If that impact was proved , then it would be pretty hard to dispute this
 new

 Wouldnt it?

 Dean,

Impress us all, Instead of selling anything for a buck including Black Sea
Pearls, Ming Dynasty Artifacts, Stuffed Animals, Blankets, Snake Oil and
Elixirs why don't you specialize in meteorites? Learn everything you can
about them, possibly start a collection and let us know about the wonders
you might have discovered along the way instead of protecting your
unofficial sacred cow (NWA 869). We have literally seen tons of this
material and donated almost every piece that crossed our collection so we
 know the difference.

If there is anything that I have learned from five

Yes, I wouldent argue with Dr Rubin. And Rubin got
   a
section of NWA869 and called it a L4 and then from
   the
EXACT SAME ROCK got another section and called it
   an
L5.
Two parts of the VERY SAME ROCK that Rubin got
   pieces
of were of a different classification. That should
tell you the rock is not consistant.
Then you go and sell Stan a piece of your very own
NWA904 that you somehow cant figure out is mothing
more than another piece of NWA869. The piece that
   you
sold stan is so different from your photos of the
other parts of the NWA904 stone (The nice part in
   the
photo in your marketing with the black spots) that
when you saw stan resell it as NWA904
   (Legitamately
since he got this piece of NWA904 from you - see
archaives of stans postings over the past couple
   of
days) you accuse him of substituting another rock
(Presumably NWA869) and improperly selling it as
NWA904.
You cant even recogonize your very own NWA904
   stone
and you yourself is calling your own NWA904 stone
   869
in your attack on stan for selling it as NWA904
   saying
that he paired the stone himself (When as per his
email yesterday he bought this NWA904 directly
   from
you).
So no, I am not disputing what Alan Rubin is
   saying.
I am totally agreeing with Rubin (And in your
   accusing
attack on stan agreeing with you also) that NWA904
   is
just another piece of the very beautiful and
   highly
brecciated NWA869.

As someone, who is trying to follow this discussion,
 my eyes are starting glaze over with NWA 1110 this;
NWA 2223 that; NWA 3133 is mine; NWA 3133 is not
 yours; my NWA 1906 is real; your NWA 1906 is fake;
may the real NWA 788, NWA 787, or NWA 482,
please stand up. It is hard to search back through
the innumerable posts, given the lack of a search
engine specifically for the archives, to find out the
details behind each specific number is being talked
 about.

At some point, it seems someone needs to provide
a scorecard of some sort, if it doesn't already
exist, about what each of these players (meteorites)

in the number game are about. It would help the soft
core, uninitiated lurkers better understand what is
the significance of NWA versus either
 NWA or NWA YYXX.

As the posts go back and forth about these numbers,
I think of a song to the tune of This Land is Your

NWA 1110 is not your number from Uranus to Mercury.
 appearing at some point.

Well,

I believe ( I know this will not be the popular belief ) that whether a
meteorite is a find or a fall and has a NWA # or locality name there really
is no point in renaming specimens. If its the same meteorite . then its
the same meteorite.

I found over 300 Park Forest specimens ( individuals and fragments ) when it
fell.If anyone wants to see pics, I have them.
If I were the one to have supplied the initial sample for classification and
then Adam comes along and buys or finds additional specimens, I certainly
wouldnt tell him he has no right to call it Park Forest. Meteorite names and
NWA #'s are not proprietary. Thats something that Adam has to come to grips
with.

I mean this is absolutely ridiculous. Look at SAU 001 . many people have
recovered so many kilos of that stuff and nobody cares about using SAU 001.
Adam apparenty feels that these guidlines only apply to more rare
meteorites. I dont feel the same way.
Why wouldnt everyone have to include a notice in an ebay auction as you
stated above if they received specimens of any meteorite from the
strewnfield after the initial find?

 Bob,
If you want to sell your rocks as nwa 1110 - why not just include a notice
in your ebay description specifically and unequivically stating that the
material you are offering was not part of the nwa 1110 find that was
recoverd - however your source for the material has sold it to you as nwa

that way there is proper disclosure. no one can say you are advetising
something incorectly. to use this very specific example Adam doesnt have
to
worry about colelctors out there thinking they have a piece of nwa 1110
when
they infact dont. and the customer can make an informed decision. I do not
see how it would hurt your sales any because in the end they are all based
upon the market confidence in the source anyway. Infact you could even
market it as a benifit for your customers as you didnt have to go through
the expense of submitting material for classification - HOWEVER they will
simply have to trust your judgemt in identifying that this tiny fragment
of
rock really is a picritic shergotite and not a pebble that fell off of a
cliff in washington state a few years ago.

Meteorite numbers are much like slabbed coins. A pcgs ms65 high relief
double eagle wil lsell for fair market value sight unseen. An unslabed
ms-65 high relief from joe collector would not relize anywhere nearly as
much, just like most collectors wouldnt spend 200$ a gram for a martian
metoeirte that was simply a stone someone found on the side of the road
and
decided to declare as comming from mars. However when you present your
customer with good, solid information as to the legitimacy of your claims
in
offering that gem of a coin you will see that the realized price will
start
to aproach that of what one might get if it were slabed. Same thing with
 meteorites.

 comments anyone?

 Bob,

It is very simple, send a type specimen to NAU or any other NomCom
authorized laboratory and I will recognize your material when the NomCom
assigns it an official NWA number. Using the numbers NWA 1110 and NWA
1877
will never be acceptable because the material has already been voted on.

It is a simple matter, send in a type specimen and all the fragments.
The
fragments will be visually compared to the type specimen by a competent
scientist. If a qualified scientist argues to the NomCom they are all
the
same and the NomCom votes that this is ok they will all be assigned an
official number. Every fragment in the NWA 1110 batch was looked at by
Dr.
Irving, submitted to the NomCom and a number was assigned to cover the
118
grams of fragments, not a gram more.

I am not authorized to compare material and make official judgements and
neither is Mike. All we can do is offer an opinion. In the case of a
fall
 the NomCom rules are different.

Here is link to explain how you can make your unclassified and
un-numbered
 material official:

 Dear List,

This is a public warning to Bob Evans to stop using the NWA 1110 and NWA
1877 designations and meteoritelab descriptions. I filed a blanket
complaint claim with ebay and found out that it is considered fraudulent
to
use lab numbers that do not apply to your samples. It is also against the
law to steal copyrighted descriptions. It took me weeks to explain to ebay
what is involved with getting numbers assigned to NWA meteorites. I will
start pulling the trigger soon on this kind of fraud starting with Bob
Evans. If ebay gets too many complaints the meteorite subsection might be
reconsidered (eliminated). That is why I am posting this message publicly
to avoid continued contact with ebay. Here are two of the many fraudulent
auctions Bob Evans is involved in:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=3239item=2287562068;
rd=1ssPageName=WDVW

Consider this warning to edit your numbers and descriptions to reflect the
truth or I will report this fraud to ebay when I return tomorrow. My
attorney gave me the green light to start pursuing these cases and I will
 exercise my options.

Mike,

If you got a shippment of meteorites from the Amgala strewnfield , would you
bother to have it classified or just sell it as Amgala ? Regardless of who
had the initial sample classified.

NWA #'s are not proprietary. I know that people such as Adam wishes they
were.

If you get a shippment from Morocco .. you trust your supplier. This
is something that will always be a problem. All we really can do is trust
the dealer we choose to buy from. Because god knows once the material is in
the hands of a moroccan dealer we really cant be 100% sure where they got it
from , unless we were there to pull it out of the sand ourselves.

To clarify something that is obviously causing some problems in the
meteorite world right now, I want everyone to know that
NWA 788, 787, and NWA 482 are numbers that came from rather large or
meteorites with hundreds of pieces bought during one of my expeditions.
The Hupes and many other people have the right to those numbers.
Now, there are other numbers being widely used without proper title (as Dr
Grossman has stated publicly and with finality that people do not own
numbers, but numbers are assigned to specific meteorite specimens and must
not be used with other meteorites just because you heard or someone told
you
 it is the same).
Let's all please stop this practice as it is really hurting our business
and
hobby. Virtually every dealer including myself has been or is guilty of
this, we are in the process of correcting the situation and to start
people
MUST immediately comply or this will just spiral downward as we see
tonight.

I perused eBay today and it is still rampant with sellers using numbers
they
seem to have drawn from a hat. So please ask you seller next time you buy
something, how they got that number, who it was assigned to and if not
them,
just how they came to call it that.

Amgala like I said in a previous email, is a fall, and like Bensour or

Still, it is a tough call. I can say as a dealer and with some experience

Bob, I would be glad to, and I think that specific meteorite is a great
example of the problem we are facing.
The Shergottite in question was widely distributed in Morocco, and many
people got pieces of it. I sold under the name NWA 1068.
I am not sure how to approach this one, it is unfair for people to demand
that every fragment of it be classified, as it would be a waste of time
and
 material.
However, what is the solution? I really don't know.

2004-10-23 Thread Comcast Mail
Hello list,

I was just sitting down eating breakfast and my wife was watching an
infomercial on a product that is called Foodsaver .
The product is used with thick plastic bags. The way it works is, the
machine vacuums out all of the air and the food is sealed air tight in a 3
layer plastic bag.
Of course I thought, this has to be the ultimate way to protect meteorites
from moisture.
Sure, it wouldn't be an appealing way to display meteorites. But, like
myself Im sure many collectors have numerous meteorites just stored away in
plastic containers.

I was wondering if anyone uses this machine currently to store meteorites.
I would like to see how effective it is.
Im sure its available on ebay listed under the name : Foodsaver

 Hello Steve,

Very nice 586 gram Campos Sales specimen you have on your website (stoney
meteorites page 1). I believe you provided the same one to Rocks From
Space
Picture of the Day last Sunday?
Curious if the specimens that you are offering are from the original 23.68
kilos that were collected soon after the fall or have they been more
recently collected. I'm wondering because I have a half individual from
the
initial collection and the crust is absolutely jet black. The image you
show
appears a bit brownish. I know some digital cameras dislike black for some
reason and the meteorites appear brown. So I'm just curious if the TKW is
higher than the 23.68 kilos, if your specimens are more weathered, or if
I'm
looking at a camera artifact? At any rate, it's a cool meteorite.
 Cheers,
 Frank

Why dont you just have the balls to admit this is only about money to you?

What does a laboratory have to say about your offerings? If you claim
these
are paired why have you not changed the TKW in your descriptions to
reflect
this, another fraud? You did not get this material from the same source
therefore it is not NWA 1110 or NWA 1877 which is reported in your
descriptions. Who knows what it is? Your NWA 1877 offering does not look
like any Olivine Diogenite I have ever seen, get it tested. The only
pieces
I have seen are brown and yellow with slight areas of green. Have a lab
check them out instead of listening to a Moroccan dealer who will tell you
 anything to make a sale.

If you do not want to hear complaints, stop using numbers that do not
apply
to your samples! As I stated before the free ride will be over soon
enough.

 Adam

 Dear List,

Enough is really enough, Bob Evans not listening to what was posted by
people in know is now using the NWA 1877 designation, the number reserved
for an Olivine Diogenite. We paid for the study of this material,
reserved
a NWA number for it and made it official by submitting it to the NomCom
for
a vote. A regular Diogenite or even terrestrial stones could easily be
confused so be careful about purchasing an Olivine Diogenite from anybody
who did not have his material studied in a lab, approved by the NomCom and
issued its very own number. Off List, does anybody have Bob Evans address
so that it will save us time in serving the legal documents we had
prepared,
 this has gone far enough.

Wishing everybody who adheres to good standards and plays by the rules
well,

 Adam

I'm not sure who is making these statements or if they refer to me, but:

 1) No meteorite name is EVER proprietary. If the NomCom voted to formally
pair something with NWA 1110, then the name would apply to the new piece
as
 well.

 2) I am not the president of the MetSoc, I am the Nomenclature Committee
chair.

 3) I never said that anything was fraud.

 Dear List,

To show you what kind of person Bob Evans really is here is an example you
can check out for yourself. Bob took it upon himself not only to use NWA
numbers we reserved and paid for the study of, he is actually copying our
descriptions, word-for-word. Bob, these descriptions are the property of
Meteoritelab, come up with your own DESCRIPTIONS!

 Our Description and ebay link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=3239item=2268563957
NWA 1877, 850mg fragment of the second Olivine Diogenite in private
hands,
found 2003 in Northwest Africa. A weight of only 312 grams is recorded
for
this find. NWA 1459 the only other Olivine Diogenite available to the
public weighed a mere 49 grams. After cutting losses and type specimen
deposits there is less than 220 grams of this material left in private
hands
including NWA 1459. This material is believed to represent the deepest
sample, yet recovered, from the asteroid Vesta. A great deal of time was
spent preparing this material. We used a penetrant stabilizer before
polishing even begun to prevent the large crystals from being plucked
during
polishing. This is important because the crystals have cleavages that are
easily fractured during preparation. No less than 10 polishing steps on a
diamond lap was needed to take these specimens to a 3,500 grit polish,
something you do not see everyday. This material is rarer than a
Brachinite, a Chassignite or even a Lodranite. Even though this is number
two, it still represents the rarest of all classifications in private
hands,
 there is nothing rarer!

Bobs stolen description and link to auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=3239item=2269795593
This is a LARGE 1.2 Gram Fragment of NWA 1877. This is the second rare
Olivine Diogenite in private hands, found 2003 in Northwest Africa. A
weight of only 312 grams is recorded for this find. NWA 1459 is the only
other Olivine Diogenite available to the public and weighed a mere 49

After cutting losses and type specimen deposits there is less than 220
grams
of this material left in private hands including NWA 1459. This material
is

Lodranite. NWA 1877 represents the rarest of all classifications in
private
hands, there is nothing rarer! This gorgeous meteorite is a must have for
any serious or new meteorite collector !

Not only is using NWA numbers that do not match his pieces he has stolen
several other descriptions and ideas from us, he is a complete fraud.
Check
out his other auctions and compare.

2004-09-08 Thread Comcast Mail
Adam,

Im not sure what the pictures you provided were meant to prove, other than
you like taking pictures of nomads playing in the sand. Why weren't you or
Greg in the photo? Just curious

The Nwa 1110 that I am selling on ebay is the same meteorite that Nelson
Oakes is selling on his website. Are you calling him a fraud too?

Adam, do you have a problem with healthy competition? I certainly believe
you do.
Is it really any mystery why Mike Farmer despises you? You certainly made
many accusations against him. And of course you couldn't prove any of them.
My point is .. you havent seen the meteorite that Im selling so please
keep your opinions to yourself.

Were you ever physically at the NWA 1110 Strewnfield ? If so please show
some real proof ( not pictures of nomads in the sand ). How do you really
know that you got every specimen of NWA 1110 ?
Please answer these questions, because I really do want to know.

Please dont interfere with my auctions again. I have never done that to you.

Wishing everyone the best !

Subject: [meteorite-list] NWA 1110 issues

 Dear List,

It has come to my attention that some sellers are still using the NWA 1110
designation to sell there untested material. It is not a marketing ploy
that I bring this up as we are nearly out of stock and we start all of our
true NWA 1110 auctions out at just 99 cents. Here are the problems:

We had Dr. Irving at the University of Washington authenticate every piece
we have ever sold or plan to sell. All of it is recorded at 118 grams can
be seen at the JPL/NASA Martian web site. Other dealers selling NWA 1110
have not gone to this expense We have only supplied one dealer from
Austria
with NWA 1110 and he is sold out.

We paid the research and authentication costs associated with every piece
of
 NWA 1110

We deposited a type sample (something important if want your very own NWA
 number)

We paid the cost to go into the field, monitored the recovery efforts and
 recorded GPS coordinates.

Habibi of Morocco has been telling dealers he supplied us with NWA 1110
and
so what he is selling is the same. This is not the truth as we do not do
business with Habibi and never will. If you check the images below you
will
see we went directly to the source and recorded GPS coordinates:

 http://www.lunarrock.com/nwa1110/nwa1110a.jpg

 http://www.lunarrock.com/nwa1110/nwa1110b.jpg

 http://www.lunarrock.com/nwa1110/nwa1110c.jpg

 http://www.lunarrock.com/nwa1110/nwa1110d.jpg

To see auctions like the one I linked to below really irritates us because
no laboratory has tested this material, the dealer should deposit a type
specimen, pay the lab fees and get his very own NWA number so that every
gram of meteorites paired to NWA 1068 can be recorded if they are indeed
 meteorites.

This is what I would like to say to the person running this ebay auction
Stop using NWA 1110, get a real number, put out some effort, there is no
such thing as a free ride:

Hello list,

I thought I would offer my Laptop computer ( actually my brothers )to the
list instead of doing the ebay thing.
Its a Sony Vaio notebook computer model # PCG-974L
It has Windows XP and about 8 gb of free space on the harddrive. It actually
has two hardrives one 5gb and the other 8gb.
Other than that, it has some usual programs that came with the computer when
purchased I m sure one could do a search to find out more specs.
Its in excellent condition thats why I'm offering it to the list , hopefully
I can help out someone whos looking for a laptop. If I didnt have 3 comps in
the household already, I'd definitely keep it.
So if anyones offended by my offer please remember Im trying to help someone
out on the list . otherwise it would take me 2 minutes to list
it on ebay.
I'm asking $400 obo.

  Dear List,

There is not a single thread of sense to this whole story. I think the
failed barbecue next door statement is probably the best theory I have
 heard
so far. My hypothesis is that a piece of fecal matter was left behind
by
 a
neighborhood dog in a pre-dug hole left behind from the pulling of a
weed.
This happened sometime after the newspaper boy slapped a paper off of
the
front of their house accounting for the thud noise. The noxious canine
  material then spontaneously combusted.

Re: [meteorite-list] New Nevada Meteorite on Ebay

2004-07-11 Thread Comcast Mail
Yep,

thats exactly what it is .. Magnetite ! I just looked at some of that
crappy looking stuff today from a guy set up at a flea market selling coins,
etc.
He said he found his meteorite in a field in Michigan. It looked exactly
like the stuff the guy has on ebay.
Upon close inspection.. the magnetite had way to many pits to be a
meteorite.
Its amazing how anybody can claim to have found a meteorite without
confirmation from a lab or appropraite source and put it up on ebay.

Check out this rock I found looking for meteorites in cornfields today:

A magnet sticks to it. But , I wouldnt throw it on ebay.

Looks like magnetite to me. Notice there is no rust on the examples shown
in the pictures...not even down in the pits and crevices. Cutting a small
window in the specimen and doing a streak test would be more conclusive.

 Ryan,
WHY re you sending this to the list? Do you think anyone really cares to
see
 you snivel over a refund?

Your first mistake was asking to pay for something you did not have the
money for yet. When you are driving a cart, it helps if you see a horses
ass
in front of youotherwise you are putting it before the horse.

If you pulled that shit with meagree to pay for something and then
back
outI would tell you to kiss my ass for the deposit NEVER agree to
do
something based on something that is yet to happen. You hung Bob out to
dry.
You deliberately INTEREFERED with his auctions on eBay by asking him to
end
them and then not completing the transaction. I WOULD REPORT YOU TO eBay.

As for taking this public... That is completely unprofessional, childish
and
uncalled for. Your mommas boy whining bullshit is best kept

of us care about your troubles and until you can actually prove that Bob
actually did anything wrong you have no right to slander him on this list.

To set things straight once and for all..

  1. Bob, I first called you at 5:53pm CST to inquire about the refund,
yet
you claimed that you would have to wait a few hours to send the refund via
Paypal since you did not have internet access at the time, thus proving
yet
another blatant lie from you; your defensive and unprofessional response
to
my email (to the list) came through at 6:08pm CST, a time-lapse of only 15
minutes. No internet access for a few hours???

  2. Also, regarding the original transaction; as I had told you over the
phone, I was unable to make the payment (in excess of $1000) due to the
fact that I had not received a large payment that I had been expecting to
receive from a sale that I had made. The buyer that I had made the deal
with
finally backed out after two nearly two months of negotiations, so please
don't act like it hasn't happened to anyone other that you before, because
If it didn't we wouldn't be in the situation and both of us would be
happy.
I told you that I was sorry for not being able to come through on the
deal,
but unlike others, I have more important financial priorities over
 collecting meteorites.

  3. I understand that you had to take the extra time to relist your
auctions. However, per Ebay policy, odds are you didn't loose any money
as
a result of this since no additional fees are charged to one's account if
the unsold items sell the second time around.

  4. Shame on you little boy Wow, very mature of you, Bob. At least I
 don't act like one.

I am sorry that I had to go public with this, but I believe that it has
importance so that others can avoid any similar experiences in the future.
 Thank you for your time.

 Hello list!

Great stone - always a pleasure to watch the meteorite of the day at
 Spacerocksinc!

As nice as the specimen may be, the owner isn't.

I never did this before and hope not to have to do it in future,
but I have to warn everyone on this list to make business with Bob Evans.

Bob Evans ordered from wellknown list member Stefan Ralew last autumn
 meteorites for 1000$.
Stefan sent the specimens, but they aren't paid until today.
Bob Evans stated to have sent a money order, but it never arrived.
Well a letter always can be lost in mail and with checks or money orders
it's really no problem to block it and to issue a new one.
Instead of this Bob Evans claimed, that Stefan recieved the money (he
 didn't).
Each bank can verify easy, whether a check was cashed. It's a question of
a
 few minutes.
Bob Evans refused to ask at his bank, kept the stones and continues to
claim
 Stefan to be fraudulent.

This is a completely improper behaviour and in my eyes the meteorite
community just has no need for such persons.

You may think, that this is not my cup of tea, but I know Stefan to be of
modest character, so that he never would address to the list in that case.
I
wrote also to Evans personnally with no reactions.
1000$ are quite a sum and we all know Stefan for his efforts to offer
meteorites of outstanding quality at extreme low prices.
With this mail I want to preserve both collectors and dealers from similar
 experiences with Mr.Bob Evans.

 So:
Please don't sell to or trade with Bob Evans, nor bid on his auctions (ID:
 maccers531)
until he will have solved that situation.

To avoid misunderstandings: Spacerocksinc has nothing to do with that
thing.

 Thanks a lot!

[meteorite-list] Park Forest Impacts

2004-03-16 Thread Comcast Mail

I just talked to a guy who hunts PF with me and we
both agree that all the ground impacts that were found by us were on an angle
from the north to the south.
The biggest one found was 1.2 Kilo and the angle of
impact was consistent with the others.
Does anyone have any knowlege of other ground
impact finds? and if they also impacted the soil on an angle , coming in from
the north.

This is consistent with the winslow street impact
also. It hit the street and sprayed the houses on the south side of the
street

Thats a pretty good Idea.
Maybe we can hear some stories about strewnfield hunts,
witnessed falls, expeditions, meteorite hunters personal finds, upcoming
expeditions and hunts.

I purchased a video from Mike Farmer documenting his Meteorite
hunting and it was very interesting. It was in Japanese but you can catch some
english dialog in the backgroundand I still recommend it to
anyone. The video was primarily filmed in Morocco ( I believe ) and it
shows alot of the hunting grounds in the desert. I was surprised to see the
amount of stones that were in the desert. It atleast gives the people who cant
get to Africa a chance to see what they are missing.

Subject: Park Forest Strewnfield report

I just got back from hunting Park Forest and
Olympia fields. Two days of hunting mostly forested areas and no new finds.

The forests are 95% covered with leaves. It is
easier to work through the forests though, considering the lack of growth
compared to spring and summer.
I used a metal detector through most of the
forests. If anyone plans on hunting the forests with a metal detector, plan on
it going off every few yards as there is alot of trash buried below the soil.

And alot of times when the detector detected metal
I couldn't dig deep enough because alot of the ground is frozen still. Which is
really pointless anyways considering the meteorites shouldnt be buried in
soil.
Unfortunately a metal detector is necessary ,
unless you plan on checking under every leaf. Its the same if you are trying to
Identify impact pits. The Forest is wall to wall leaves.
I visited with a couple of locals that I know who
still hunt, and they havent found any new pieces since last summer.
Oh well, if anyone has plans to hunt the forests,
any new finds will be sheer luck.

Just got back from my first time to the Tucson

room is the one to go to if you are looking for premium stuff, Mike and Eric

dealer. By the way... thanks for the dinner Mike! I want to thank Steve Arnold (
Chicago ) For helping me get acquainted with everything, Steve still is one of
the nicest and passionate collectors that I know. I owe you one. Dave Schultz
and Bob Cucciara for driving me all over town ( If you go to the show. make
sure you get a rental car , otherwise bring a couple of hundred dollars extra
just for cabs). It was a pleasure to meet EricOlsen, Jim Strope, Bob
Holmes, John Gwilliam, Mexico Doug, Edwin Thompson, Mr.and Mrs.Kilgore,
Bliane Reed, TheHupe's, and Eduardo. Allare a bunch of world class
people.

I want to thank Iris and Al Lang. They are great
people to meet.
I want to say that Al Lang is projected as an
unfriendly person but he surely was the opposite. He was one of the kindest and
friendliest people that you will meet there.

Well, take a look at some of the

[meteorite-list] Park Forest Auction

2004-01-24 Thread Comcast Mail

Hello List,

I am having my own silent auction. I have several
perfect Park Forest specimens that I personally found on Winslow st. in Park
Forest the first day, with the exception of the 9.1 gram fragment from the stone
that fell through a home in Olympia fields.
All are in pristine condition. I found them all
laying in the street, never touched by anyone other than myself. And of course
never rained on.
These will make a nice addition to anyones
collection.

If you are interested, please email me privately
