[meteorite-list] Gheesling Weston framed specimens
Folks, Dave had produced several Weston meteorite framed specimens and sold or gave most of them away over the years... You can see one of them on his Weston page: http://www.fallingrocks.com/Collections/Weston.htm If you have one of Dave's framed Weston meteorites, let me know... I came across several COA cards for small specimens. I know some of these belong to the frames because one of the COA's belongs to the frame Dave game me years ago... so I was able to add it to the provenance for my frame. If you look at the description plaque on your frame, you will see the weight of your displayed specimen in the first sentence. Let me know what you have, and I'll check the loose COAs. Re: [meteorite-list] Regarding about the Glenn I. Huss Collection number H37.810
Mendy, Many times those gaps are specimens that were sold between editions. I think they moved / sold some material quickly, and never bothered to document it outside of the COA. They cataloged what they had, but there were many gaps throughout both books. Nininger had the same issues with his "The Nininger Collection of Meteorites" book (1950). [meteorite-list] Request for astronomers
Folks, Any astronomers here know of a group or individuals that can setup 3 or 4 telescopes for an event in Arizona on October 27th? Please feel free to forward the following to any potential participants: Within our small industry, we are blessed to have some extremely passionate people who take the science and the adventure, and teach children and adults in our communities to look outside the world around them and learn about space. We want them to look at the sky and think about what could be out there. Unfortunately, our industry suffered a major loss this past year with the passing of Dave Gheesling. Dave was extremely passionate about outreach and spent a great deal of his free time volunteering with different groups to bring his meteorites and share about the worlds beyond ours. You can learn a bit about him here: http://www.fallingrocks.com/About.htm https://www.dignitymemorial.com/.../dave-gheesling-9901426 On Wednesday evening, October 27, 2021, we will be hosting Dave’s Celebration of Life at the JW Marriott, Desert Ridge resort. Our hope was to have someone set up a telescope or two for guests to look out at space and enjoy the same celestial bodies that Dave did. We hope that even in his death he can inspire other people to love the world beyond us. Today, I am happy to announce the official launch of the Global Meteorite Association, Inc. (GMA). The GMA is a nonprofit 501c6 dedicated to serving and bringing our community together. Many, many hours have been put into the formation of this organization and many aspects have been guided or suggested by you in the past. The GMA is here for you and the Board's Golden Rule is "The Board operates for the benefit of and is accountable to the membership, its volunteers and staff." Though the website is still in early stages, we are ready to review applications for Collector and Business memberships (we have 4 membership classes including a free membership for kids). Also as a quick note, we have reached an agreement with Marc Fries and will host his Galactic Analytics content on the website (previously on FB). [meteorite-list] Dave Gheesling Celebration of life.
Folks, There have been many inquiries about the services for Dave Gheesling. There will not be a funeral service... but instead a celebration of life party. The time frame for this event will be "sooner than later," but as you can imagine, we are working through navigating a venue and finding a time to maximize the ability for Dave's friends to participate. We realize that, given travel restrictions and the number of people wanting to attend from across this blue planet, it will not be possible for everyone to make it to Georgia for this event. For those that can't travel, we will be working on methods to attend virtually. As soon as there are more concrete plans, we'll post them here and on social media. [meteorite-list] Dave Gheesling's Obituary
Folks, I've posted this on Facebook... but for those of you that are not on that page, below is the obituary for Dave and the URL for the funeral home. --- Dave B. Gheesling, age 53, of Roswell, GA, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2020. He was born on June 8, 1967 in Decatur, Georgia, the son to Barry Gheesling and Sheilla Gheesling. Dave graduated from Georgia Tech in 1989 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He began his career selling industrial equipment before becoming involved in the flooring industry. He worked at both Mohawk Industries and Abbey before founding FloorExpo Inc., today known as FEI Group. Dave was a man of extraordinary talent. He was an accomplished public speaker, educator, and an expert marksman. Personal fitness was a priority, and he was an accomplished author of numerous publications and books. Dave was a lover of all things related to space and collecting meteorites was his passion. His collection, Falling Rocks, is one of the largest and most impressive collections in private hands. Dave was an inspirational leader, mentor to many, and loved by all. Dave met his life partner, Kasia, at a coffee shop and they shared six plus years of happiness together. Raising a blended family, they enjoyed sharing precious moments and adventures together with family and friends. Family was most important to Dave and he considered his friends to be a part of his family. He was an incredible father, son, brother, uncle, partner, and friend. He was a father figure to many, and he will be deeply missed. His life, influence, and legacy will forever remain in the lives of all who knew him, and we will all cherish his memories as we gaze to the heavens. He is survived by his loving family: Kasia Sutton; children; Willow, Katy, Maddie, Natalia and Marcus; parents, Barry Gheesling and Sheilla Gheesling; brother Brad Gheesling and his wife Kara and his niece and nephew Suzanna and Shannon; uncles, Bob Green and his wife Pat, and Clayton Gheesling and his wife Karen, along with a host of friends from all over the globe. Please visit roswellfuneralhome.com to leave condolences to the family. --- Also, on a personal note -- I have been deeply touched by the outpouring of support, condolences, stories and pictures regarding Dave over the last three days. I can’t tell you how much that has meant to his family. Thank you for all of the emails, texts, calls, posts, pictures, and the awesome video & song from the Big Kahuna (Mahalo!). At times, we may think we are only an eclectic community of collectors, but this is an example of how much more we really are -- this is an awesome group of family and friends. [meteorite-list] Dave Gheesling
Folks, It’s with a heavy heart that I write to the meteorite community this evening. Dave Gheesling passed away yesterday (11/11), and we’re all trying to process the sudden loss. He was my best friend. I don’t have the words to express how much he meant to me, how much he influenced my life, and how blessed I was to have known the man. Dave’s love of family & friends, his positivity, his generosity and his enthusiasm for life are the example he has left for us all. Dave has been an important part of our community, and his contributions will live on as his legacy for many decades to come. I apologize for the abruptness of an email communication, but we were only able to contact a few people this evening, given the hour. Please, if you need anything, contact me directly so that we can give Dave’s family the time they need to prepare for the service. I will post more details as they are available. Yours, Sean Murray 678-367-7095 (cell) -- “Our respective fates here on planet Earth are all inevitable. Sooner or later - and whether we like it or not - each of us will eventually assume room temperature. Seemingly against all odds, we are born, we experience a few decades on the big ball (if we're lucky), then we die. Our atoms are once again stirred back into the terrestrial soup, and that's about all she wrote.” -- Dave Gheesling, August 2009 http://www.fallingrocks.com/FRarticle-082009.htm__ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

The bolide stunned onlookers with a multitude of colors as it broke up into many pieces. The magnitude of the fall was so great that the spectacle was even observed several states away. Dozens of witnesses close to the ground path heard sonic booms shortly after the fireball terminated. By the next day, the American Meteor Society had received over 120 reports. At first I was confused by what I saw in the data in the various AMS reports. As I sorted through a number of eye witness descriptions, it was soon clear that there were two events near to one another, both in distance and in time. The eye witness reported what sounded "like bombs falling," and that the meteor had passed directly overhead. I contacted Marc Fries with the location and suggested the fall was probably within a few miles of the eye witnesses location. Within minutes, Marc found radar returns in the area that corresponded with the time of the event. On October 27th, my wife Anne Marie and I arrived in the area under the returns Marc Fries had discovered. On October 27th, my wife Anne Marie and I arrived in the area under the returns Marc Fries had discovered. Within twenty minutes, we found a stone that had hit a metal fence post and shattered, showering the road embankment with fragments. We recovered 395.7 grams of material from the site and subsequently reassembled the majority of the stone. -- More here, with pictures: http://robertwardmeteorites.com/creston-california/ We'll be posting more pictures, information and details on the expedition as the hunt progresses. [meteorite-list] Looking for a large OC slice
Folks, I am looking for a large format ordinary chondrite slice - something at least 30 cm across, preferably closer to 35 cm across axes. I'd like something that shows a fresh matrix and metal. Please contact me off-list. And Greg - don't bother sending me a picture of NWA 5000 :) - I'm looking for something a bit more ordinary. I may have missed this in the past listings, but has there been any official publication for the new strewnfield yet? Something that outlines the age, chemical composition, etc? Re: [meteorite-list] Florida boy
It was not a meteorite. One of the members in my club, Hal Povenmire, actually went down and interviewed that and was able to get some material. He sent in a few small fragments for testing and it was determined to be terrestrial. It was either a hoax, or even a possible something that got stuck in and dropped off an airplane wheel after takeoff (they are near an airport...) We bounced several theories back and forth about it. Regardless, Hal was convinced that they were genuine in their belief, so we're giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was an odd event, and not a deliberate hoax. Does anyone know if whatever struck the boy was actually a meteorite ? I tend to be extremely skeptical about these types of stories (such as Gerrit Blank who claimed he was hit on the arm in 2009 and it turned out to be a hoax).
