Re: [meteorite-list] Does this NWA look familiar to anyone?

2005-01-27 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
If this dealer screwed you by omission you have ever right to beef, not
much recourse other than that though. I just wonder why he advertised it as
unclassified and sent it with an NWA 869 label. Maybe he is confused but I
doubt it.

Maybe he bought it as 869 but did think it was when he got it and did not
want to sell it as 869 if he doubted it. It is either keep it, through it
away, or sell it as an unclassified piece. I would, but I would have
explained the situation!
I have bought unclassified stuff from big dealers that every one says is
869. Would you have a problem if you bought an unclassified and it turned
out to be lunar? : )

did a

So the lot of pieces (I bought several other items from the seller at

it
  unclassified in the
auction (possibly as an deliberate attempt to make it seem more unusual
rather

mistake), on the other hand it still is a beautiful piece with
significant flow

probably well worth the slightly less than 50 cents per gram that I paid
for it.
  (Which is more
than three times more than I have paid for NWA 869 in the past, but
still
  cheaper than the $3-ish
per gram the other seller wanted for the similar NWA 787.)

Look at these scans I made of the piece now that I have it (actual piece
not
  quite as contrasty as
  scan makes it look).

So how would you handle this-- be upset with the seller for calling it
  unclassified when it was
NWA 869, or just be happy with the piece and let it slide?

2005-01-26 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hi list, I have been into model rockets for a very long time. I did a lot
of thinking and consulting and figured out a way to retrieve Martian
meteorites! I am building a rocket and rover that will be launched from my
back yard this weekend. I am sending my modified RC-10 remote controlled
truck as the rover, it has an arm with a magnet attached that will collect
the meteorites and a sample return capsule that can return 1 kilo of
meteorites and land in a predetermined and secret landing spot a few miles
from my home. With the help of Tim the tool man Taylor who modified my
rocket and rover for performance, this entire trip will take only a week.
If you want one of these meteorites, contact me as soon as possible, I am
sure they will go quick! I can not be sure of what classification of
meteorites will be collected, I can not guarantee what type you will
receive, except that it will be a meteorite from the surface of mars. Also,
the price per gram can not be determined by type, I will just give a flat
rate of $50 per gram. Yes that is cheap, but the mission has cost me a total
of 54 bucks so far, the most expensive part is the rover, which I already
had, so you benefit from the savings! You will have to pay up front. Like
all space travel, there will be financial, mechanical and human life at risk
so you will be taking a $50 risk to get one of these meteorites, but I think
it is a small risk for what you get if the mission goes as planned! If
interested, you can just paypal me at my email address. Please do keep in
mind that there is a possibility the mission will not go as planned and
there are no refunds, remember there is always a risk in space travel!
Also, with only 1k available, it will be first to pay, first served! You do
not have time to think, just go to paypal and pay me now, you can always
think about it later!

'Shooting Stars' On Mars: Messages From A Meteorite
 By Leonard David
 space.com
 26 January 2005

NASA's Opportunity Mars rover has completed its inspection of Heat
Shield Rock -- an iron meteorite the robot came across at Meridiani
Planum, a cratered flatland that the machine has called home since
landing on the red planet over a year ago.

The pitted, basketball-size meteorite is mostly made of iron and nickel,
as detected by the rover's set of onboard spectrometers -- devices that
map the presence of different elements on the surface of Mars.

Meteors, often called shooting stars have been seen blazing through
the Martian sky by both Opportunity and its sister ship, Spirit, now
rolling through the Columbia Hills at Gusev Crater.

But finding the meteorite was a surprise to scientists running the dual
Mars Exploration Rover effort. The researchers now wonder just how
prolific meteorites might be, perhaps sitting there strewn across the
 expanse of Meridiani Planum.

Sitting there a very long time

We're done with the meteorite, said Steve Squyres from Cornell
University, and the leader of the science team for the Mars Exploration
 Rover (MER) mission.

Squyres told SPACE.com that further study of nearby entry shield
hardware that slammed onto Mars during Opportunity's landing is on tap,
followed by setting sail to the south toward a circular feature called
 Vostok.

Discovering the meteorite has raised some speculation it might have been
dislodged from a different locale -- unmarsed so to speak -- and
tossed to its present position by the high-speed impact of Opportunity's
entry shield, but Squyres said there was no morphologic evidence for
disturbance of soil around the meteorite.

It has been sitting there a very long time, Squyres said.

 Difficult questions to answer

There are a number of things that make the meteorite find a very
scientifically interesting and important find, said planetary geologist,
Bradley Jolliff of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri and a
 MER science team member.

From the well-preserved shape and form of cuspate marks and
'thumb-print'-like cavities, it is possible to say something about the
velocity and atmospheric effects that this meteorite experienced when it
 fell, Jolliff said.

How fast the meteorite struck Mars, and just how thick was the martian
atmosphere during its fall are difficult questions to answer. But
careful study will likely provide some constraints. The external shapes
and overall morphology suggest that this was not a piece broken off from
a larger object, but that this is the entire meteorite, Jolliff told
 SPACE.com.

 Recent event or ancient?

 Wow Tom,

It's a paleolontoligical sensation! Namely a piece of a lithified giraffe!
You have to know, that the archaic percursors of our giraffes today were
 smaller.
Only 10 inches tall. Like this they could survive the shock waves of the
Chicksaloop impact 60 million years ago without break away their necks.

 Best!

[meteorite-list] weather effects on metal?

2005-01-25 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hi list, I need your help! : ) I have a great %70 crusted SAU 001
individual. Well I made a window on the %30 part and it is so nice! There is
some real nice small flakes of metal, but there is also what looks to be
metal, but without the metal shine, just a dull metallic look. It also
surrounds a chondrule or two, like an armored chondrule, but is this metal
or not? Does metal weather into this, or is it something else?
If it is metal, and these are armored chondrules, this one does have
something pretty neat. There is a rectangular inclusion (?) that has the
same appearance as the chondrules, same color, looks like the same stuff,
just rectangular but it is also armored, a rectangular armored chondrule,
how neat is that? : )

 Dear Sir,
Am very pleased to write to you this evening about a meteorite on sale
by us in Nairobi Kenya east Africa.the following are its characteristics.

 1.it radiates /emits allot of light--rainbow colors
2.it moves by itself on exposure to sunlight to where there is a shade
3..if there is no shade it digs wanting to bury itself in the ground
4.its untouchable it paralyzes the body or the hands in contact/if you

Re: [meteorite-list] Magnetic meteorites

2005-01-19 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Thanks John, I like to use the word magnetic for describing a meteorite only
because I type about one word a minute and I don't think someone should have
to say it is attracted to a magnet it just takes to long. We all know what
is meant when a list member says magnetic. Magnetic, magnetic magnetic, see
no one died from reading the word so we should let this topic rest forever!

 Steve, Bob, Doug et al,
 Webster's College Dictionary says:
 magnetic
 1. of or pertaining to a magnet or magnetism.
 2. having the properties of a magnet.
 3. capable of being magnetized or attracted by a magnet.
The list of definitions go on even further but I think #3 answers the
question.

Steve, you're fine. Generally with meteorites the more strongly
magnetic
the specimen the more iron metal. There are some many uses of the word
magnetic in exactly the way you use it, in the Cambridge Encyclopedia of
 Meteorites
that it sounds like you might be able to give Bob Evans some help on
the
 concept. Saludos, Doug
PS I have a meteorite that is a magnet. It's easy to make them from
most
magnetic metals like your new meteorite. Just store it with a strong
magnet
attached for a while and even just filing it can make a magnetic iron
a
permanent magnet right away. It'll be weaker thanthe original magnet,
 though.
Mu Toluca got so magnetic it sticks to the refrigerator door. I was
 thinking
sending a certain person one of these as a peace offering:) Other
magnetic
metals in the same sense as iron, are, nickel, cobalt and
gadolinium...the
actual term is ferromagnetic. Chromium and Maganese are actually
 antiferromagnetic.

When someone says magnetic they are referring to any kind of magnetic
property at all, not just the ability to sustain magnetic poles like a
 permanent
magnet. The correct word to describe that is that the material is
magnetized. Magnetized means it has the properties of a permanent
 magnet/ Magnetic
means whatever the users wants remotely related to magnets, the metals
they
attract, of the fields they produce, etc. etc. Hope this clears it up
 until the
 next round...
 Congrats on the new acquisition!

 Probably not !!
I see this used all of the time, so, am I missing something ?

[meteorite-list] I need some excitement, trade?

2005-01-17 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hey list, life is getting extra boring here in little old Kingman, I need
some excitement and nothing excites me more than a trade, well that's not
completely true, but

It may be unclassified, but is it one of my nicer meteorites. You have seen
it before, but it is so much nicer in person! It is brecciaed with a light
gray fine matrix full of odd shaped inclusions and a white part that has a
rougher texture and has some actual chondrules. Before you say it looks like
NWA 869 you had better take a gander at it's crust, if it is NWA869 then it
has the nicest blackest and freshest crust ever to grace an 869!!! It
weighs in at an even 33 grams but size is not every thing, this thing is
nicer than a lot of meteorites twice it's size!!! : ) If you like it, I
can send bigger pics to you.

All I am looking for is a nice crusted complete individual that looks nice,
or an iron. : )

2005-01-15 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hey List, Nininger said there should be ten meteorites on every square mile
of earth. The rate, I would think would be higher on mars, with a less dense
atmosphere. Without the weathering and such, I would think the meteorites
would stay in one place and survive a lot longer, so I would think the
rovers should be able to find them all over the place. But, what do I know?

Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Mars Rover Discovers A Potential Meteorite

 Hi,

I have nothing to contribute as to whether the object is or is not a
meteorite, but there is one thing
about discovering a meteorite on Mars that disturbs me.
The performance of the rovers have greatly exceeded their planned
lifetime and reach, but even so, the
two them have only covered a few thousands of meters. Assuming that their
cameras only scan closely
objects within a few hundred meters of their position as they move along,
the total land area scanned in
detail by the rovers can only amount to one square kilometer or maybe two.
(Five kilometers of travel
times 200 meters of total sideview equals one square kilometer.)
What are the odds of finding a good-sized meteorite in ANY 1 or 2
square kilometers? Since we can
assume the choice of Martian location is random, let's re-phrase that to:
What are the odds of finding a a
good-sized meteorite in EVERY 1 or 2 square kilometers of Mars?
Frankly, it would mean that meteorites are incredibly abundant on
Mars. It would mean a very high fall
rate. It would mean meteorites survive for a very long time in the Martian
environment. But one big
meteorite per square kilometer would mean that Mars has tens of millions
of big meteorites on its surface.

And by the normal power law distribution, there should be hundreds of
millions of meteorites 1/3 this
size and billions 1/10th this size and a million meteorites three times
this size, and so on. That's a
helluva lot of meteorites! (And you thought NWA's would flood the
market...)
Or maybe the rovers are just incredibly lucky meteorite hunters? (Can
I rent one?)
Yes, it could just be a fluke, wild luck, like winning the lottery,
but the entire mission (despite
being targeted at potential formerly wet sites), like all missions, is
based on the principle that a
random sample is in the long run a representative sample.
So, it sits there on its sand dune. If that sand dune were one square
kilometer of North West Africa
picked at random, what are the odds there'd be a meteorite sitting on it?
Is it too good to be true?

Mars rover discovers a potential meteorite
   Kelly Young
   New Scientist
   January 14, 2005

NASA's rover Opportunity has spotted an unusual rock on Mars that may
be
   a meteorite.

The rover first glimpsed the rock two weeks ago as it approached the
remains of its heat shield, which plummeted to Mars during the
rover's
descent through the atmosphere in January 2004.

The object, about the size of a potato, caught the eyes of ground
controllers because of its unusual pitted surface. We've been seeing
little rocks on the plain since the start of the mission, says
Steven
Squyres at Cornell University, the Mars rovers' chief scientist. We
all
just kind of assumed they're little pieces of Martian basalt.

But Opportunity's infrared spectrometer, called Mini-TES, saw that
this
object did not radiate thermal energy at the frequencies expected of
typical Martian rocks, leading scientists to hypothesise that the
object might in fact be a meteorite rich in metal.

Opportunity has stayed next to the object and will continue making
measurements over the weekend to confirm whether this is indeed a
meteorite. Squyres says they should have the results by Monday or
Tuesday. It could be any number of things if somehow we got faked
out
by the Mini-TES data, Squyres cautions.

   Unexpected circumstances

Meteorites are objects that survive the - sometimes fiery - fall to a
planet's surface from space. Only about 2% of the meteorites that
land
on Earth are made of nickel and iron. The rest are made of rock.

Squyres says that the rover's rock abrasion tool, which is used to
grind
away the surface of rocks, had never been tested against a metal like
nickel. I didn't see this coming, he told New Scientist.

Opportunity will celebrate its first birthday on the Martian surface
on
25 January. So far, it has trekked over 2000 metres around Meridiani

John, Jim and everyone else, I have nothing but respect and admiration for
everyone on here, but;
Personally, I do not have one problem with the list as it is, I think it is
great! It seems like the problem is with the people who refuse to use the
delete key, it does not bite! I opened my email this morning and had forty
emails from the list, I glanced at one from each topic and if it did not
interest me, I deleted the rest with the same topic and guess what, it did
not even hurt me little finger! This is a great list and what makes it so
great is the fact that there are human beings on here and we are all
different! It might be nice if Art would do something during the wars, but
they are all part of what makes this list great! We don't want everyone
thinking that everyone gets along all the time!
My suggestion is to leave the list the way it is and learn to use the
delete key.

We all seem to have an account on this LIST ?? (we get monthly messages
now about our account)
Maybe there are ways to limit user access over a period of time
w/settings?

We could have a group of volunteers that would help Art to monitor things
and change personal access settings. (a vote within account group)
The group could be changed out over periods of time...allowing many of the
LIST's participants to be involved over the years to come.

Make it so the USERS are thrown off for being considered a knuckle-head
who can't keep within rules. (Times of probation or of being thrown off for
good would be at discretion of the account team.)

For me in particular: Limit SALES pitches and TRADE offers to 5 times(+/-)
a month from a person/dealer group. Have a small group be responsible for

  Al..

While I certainly agree that the flame wars etc. make this list
virtually a
joke, I do not think a new list would catch on to the point where it
would
replace this list. It has just been around too long. I think the answer
is
  to fix what we have.

This list should be a comfortable place where we can send new
collectors.
But...it is not. For the last couple of years I have NEVER EVER
recommended this list to a new collector. And I never will until the BS
stops. This is a sad commentary on the present condition of this
meteorite
  list.

New collectors are usually pretty happy with their new hobby until they
stumble upon this mailing list. Just ask Blaine Reed the feedback he
gets
from his mailorder collectors once they get on line and discover this
forum.

I belong to another mailing list which is backpacking related and I tell
you
this..the crap that goes on here would never be tolerated.
Offenders are warned once and then banished for life.

   List,

There has been talk about starting a new meteorite list. One that will
be
monitored to make sure that topics stay on meteorites, that offensive
posts will be removed and the offenders given time off or removed for
good. None of the past posts by Bernd and others have been taken
seriously
and the list continues to spiral down to the lowest denominator of
human
kind. As mentioned before list brawls hurt collecting. We're all
guilty at
one time or another of posting off topic. Rather than learning from
our

How many out there would welcome such a list? I for one am ready for a

I do not know how this all got started, but I just checked the list rules
and there is no mention of message editing or top posting or anything on
this topic. So why all the fuss? Top posting is nice and I like to be able

[meteorite-list] OT; What next!

2005-01-04 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
As most of you know, my life sucks right now. I drive a 1980 ford van that
has seen better days. After the divorce, my first wife's dad gave my second
soon to be ex wife a 1998 or so Astro van because she needed a car too. Yes
my first wife's wife's dad, not her dad. My oldest daughters grandfather. go
figure.
Today my ex called me, (we are still friends) and told me she is getting
re-married. I am happy for her, but it kind of rubs it in my face, my life
is going down hill and hers just keeps getting better. Just not a good time
to hear something like that. (We have been divorced for about a year now.)

As someone who only recently became interested in meteorites, I have found
this book contains a wealth of knowledge. You may want to take a look at

Hi Bill,
What is born poor?

Being born poor is just that, I was born into a poor ($) family, food stamps
and midi-care, your typical welfare family.

You have a PC and I assume you aren't illegally connected to a power source
in an alley living in a box.

You have a PC, no, my daughter has a PC thanks to her grand parents on her
moms side, and she is sweet enough to let me use it.

I assume you aren't illegally connected to a power source in an alley
living in a box.

Don't assume, I live in a mobile home, as close as you can get to a card
board box, only one step above! And for the power, by sheer grace of God!!!

There isn't enough money in the world to fuel the budget of an obsessed
collector.

Boy, isn't that the truth : )

They are ONLY rocks, Tom. You can't take them with you even when you
can afford only the best, and if you do take them with you, the
graverobbers will soon do their thing:-) They are ONLY rocks, the
objects of desire. Desire is never satisfied. Get a new rock, enjoy it
for a short time, and desire returns. A large or valuable meteorite
collection will never be the foundation of true happieness. Desire
attaches itself to the objects it desires and demands to be fed still
more. Give ebay a break for a spell. Stop looking at meteorites for a
spell. What did you do before you discovered it was possible to own
meteorites? Did you miss acquiring them when you didn't realize you
could acquire them? I stopped buying meteorites a year and a half ago.
 I don't miss spending money on meteorites at all. I'm a non-collector
 too.
I still enjoy the science. I enjoy seeing beautiful specimens. But I
never find myself saying gee, I wish I could afford that one. I
stilled the desire. Of course, I doubt dealers would like it if my
 philosophy took hold:-)

I don't get ebay, one well known over seas seller has a $25 shipping fee,
that's fine, but if another seller sells an identical meteorite at the same
starting price, but with $2 shipping, form what I have seen, the meteorites
will sell for the same amount lets say $15 in the end, even though they have
to pay $23 more in shipping, do they just not care what the shipping charges
are?

 Hi!
Well, the eBay shipping saga is finished and I am not completing the sale.
He refused point blank to reconsider the shipping charges of $25 for a
thumbnail specimen, but I did notice that on his new auctions he made 2
critical changes - one was to have a proper starting price (so he no
longer
has to sell as $65 for $1) and also much more plausible shipping charges.
 So, negative feedback all round!!!

Not a happy ending but he obviously did not want to nurture business like
all of you (and me) want to.

Sometimes I am deeply saddened by the stupidity of Mankind

Hello List, it is here, the Proud Tom signature series etched meteorite!
This is a one of a kind meteorite that will never be duplicated by the
real
 proud tom!
This is a self portrait and is signed by proud tom. This is it, only
one
Proud Tom fan can own the signature meteorite, bid now and bid high, be
the
only one on your block to own this magnificent meteorite! All proceeds
will
be donated to the self proclaimed poorest non collector fund, (that is
me). Don't forget, why bid once when you can bid twice and pay twice as
 much

2004-12-30 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hello List, the non collector needs a new Juancheng, I have a perfect %100
individual that is 1.72 grams that I bought from Mike Farmer, but it is a
little to small so I need to sell it (or trade) and find my self a 2.5 to 3
gram at least mostly crusted one to replace it with. If you can help me with
either of these problems, I would appreciate it.

 Tom,
I think if you took a poll of the list, you'd find that many of us have
had
to refrain from purchasing meteorites for our collections at times; very
few people have the resources to buy all of the items they want for
collections or hobbies. After all, hobbies are a secondary part of life
that we can allocate money to after we take care of the necessities of
raising children and paying our normal day to day expenses.

Fredric, Welcome to the active side (posting) of the list! I heard there
are laws to protect innocent people from lurkers, well maybe not list
lurkers, so never mind! : )
I guess I would have to get rid of my collection to make me a real non
collector, so as long as I have one, I will always be. I have some
meteorites that are sentimental that I will always have. I guess if I ever
walk past a black rock with out taking a closer look, then I will know I no
longer love meteorites!
Again, welcome, one great big happy family here on the list, an occasional
family squabble, but we all love each other in the end!

I agree with your entire message JIM S., especially your

 Hello Tom .
By the way, 3 days last week , I did Not collect meteorites ; so
 am I , therefore a non-collector ? No, it all is a matter of

Tom is still a collector ; right now a collector of information

2004-12-26 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hi Tom and list, the bickering does not bother me, I just don't read them.
: ) The list could use some bickering right now, at least there would be
something in my inbox! : )
As for my collecting, it is just not a good time to be collecting
meteorites for me (not unusual). Trying to be a single dad (or mom) now days
is tough. All my money (and them some) goes towards raising my kid. I am
selling my meteorites to make ends meet. My collection is small to start
with and is hardly worth calling a collection anymore! The bright side, I
don't have to display them, I don't have anything worth looking at! : ) So,
it is depressing to see so many nice meteorites for sale and can't even
consider trying to buy it, or wait, I can, my kid does not need to eat this
month, no wait, she does! My dad responsibilities have to come way before
my collection. So I need to focus my thoughts on my most important task
(for now) my kid.

 Tom,

Too depressing? How so? Tired of trying to be a collector?

In the meteorite world things are ALWAYS looking up! Mostly down though
if you want to try to find any of your own.

Stick around, just lurk awhile and don't mind the occasional bickering.
 Learn to ignore it.

me my collection is not for sale... you could offer me 5 times what the

the other hand I see people on the list offering items from their personal
collection for sale I do not understand. What is a collection??? I
can
see making an up grade.. I had a 50 gram Gibeon and I find a 100 gram
Gibeon I like better. Now the 50 gram piece is on the market. But to sell
items from your personal collection what does that mean??

Now if I buy that 25g slice of Zagami and I return it only weighing 12.5g's

 Hi All...

My planetary Ebay Auctions are ending tonight so don't delay in buying
yourself a holiday present. If you can't spend money on yourself, who can
 you spend it on?

Also, take a look at the photos of some high quailty Gibeons that I have
on
buy it now sales even if you don't want to bid. I think you will enjoy
 the photos.

Do a search on my ebay name catchafallingstar.com or go to the
following link and scroll to the bottom:

http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPageuserid=catchafallingst
ar.com

 Here are the details:

Beautiful 1+ gram specimen of ZAGAMI with an edge of glossy fusion crust:
 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2288213890

NWA 998 Nakhlite thinsection and specimen with fusion crust. I have sold
the thinsection alone for $500- but most have gone to institutions so I
only
 have 7 left:
 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2288208319

1/4 gram of DHOFAR 019 with incredible surface area for the weight:
 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2288345664

A nice ULTRA Thin partslice of NWA 482 with fusion crust. Not many pieces
of NWA 482 come up for sale with fusion crust so now is your chance:
 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2290094571

Even though these are ebay auctions, my unconditional money back guarantee
applies so don't hesitate to bid.

 Thanks for looking!

I've only subscribed to this list for about a week now, so I don't know
anything about the history
of this list. Has this weird, interesting, way out there crackpot site
been discussed before?

http://www.meteoriteman2000.com/index.html

I ran across it today when attempting to contact a bidder on Ebay (and give
him a tip-- he had a
zero feedback and I was trying to be helpful) and the e-mail address (which
bounced) had this site
as the domain. The guy is bidding on multiple lots of NWA 869 stones (at
higher-than-needed prices,
which I was going to point out to him). Since on his web site he is trying
to sell 2-4 gram pieces
of his messenger stone for $50 each, I'm thinking that he might want the
NWAs to try and sell as
pieces of his whatever the heck piece of junk that is.

[meteorite-list] Yoer opinion needed, please

2004-12-06 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hello List, I have been looking at all my meteorites looking at the crusts.
This stone I found has the best possible crust I have ever seen on a rock.
But, I was not convinced, I thought I would take it to Tucson ( if the good
lord gives me a way to go). But I was looking at it tonight and noticed
something weird, at least for a rock (as far as I know). In the first pic
there is a break in the upper right hand corner. I was looking at it
carefully and noticed what looks like a roll over rim!!! (second pic). This
whole area was covered in caliche so it was hard to see. what do you all

Re: [meteorite-list] Clarifying some things

2004-12-04 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hi all just wondering, the Pellisons are implying that if you ever bought a
NWA then you are supporting terrorist. How about a class action law suit
against them for slander? Everyone who owns a NWA can get involved. I am one
of many who do not like that being said about me. If it is true that we are
supporting terrorist, then it is a good thing, if they are out collecting
our new meteorites, they are to busy to blow anything up! Now we know why
nothing has happened since 9/11, we are keeping them to busy, thanks all you
NWA owners!

Thanks Bernd, I think I get it. I did not study philosophy though in the
 University.
Life is not perfect, we should all get along but don't. The Pellisons are
a
joke, but a dirty one that has the potential to come back to haunt us all.
What if they stir the pot so much that one of us goes to a North African
country and does not come back? Where will that put the collectors market?
Or how will it benefit the scientific world, who have benefited so much
from
this gold rush of new meteorites of some of the rarest and never before
seen
 types?
We have a saying in English, the squeaky wheel gets the grease and the
Pellisons are doing a lot of squeaking.

  Some clarifications are necessary here:

  1) Martin and Michel, I have never bought a meteorite from the Pelissons

  2) Maybe I should not have quoted Mike's remark out of its proper

[meteorite-list] fireball???

2004-12-04 Thread Tom AKA James Knudson
Hello list, I walked out my front door a couple of nights ago and saw a huge
red streak about parallel to the horizon. It was bright red and fast. This
thing was huge, not anything like any fireball I had ever seen. I passed it
off as some kind of reflection or something, maybe I was seeing things. It
was between trees and stuff, so
Today I ran into a friend that knows I am into meteorites and he said he
saw the same thing, but with an unobstructed view. He said he saw where it
hit, but we all know better. : ) But it does seem to confirm it was a
fireball.

 Richard Roland,
I have taken the time to carefully read through the following page on your
 website.

 http://www.saharamet.com/meteorite/data/Sahara/Nwa.html

After sifting through what is written there and the emails that have been
posted to the Meteorite List, I have come to a simple conclusion. It is
apparent that your real motive is to eliminate anyone in the business or
science of meteorites who is in competition with you. I find it hard to
believe that the two of you could actually believe that this grand
conspiracy with word-wide connections really exists.

If you have REAL proof, please show it to us without delay. If not, then
withdraw your claims and remove the page of lies and half-truths from your
 website.

It is a pity that the two of you would stoop so low in an attempt to
promote yourselves. I have been to your website several times over the
years and it is a wonderful piece of work (excluding the above mentioned
page) so I believe that you must be quite intelligent men.

Add my name to the list of people who request that you remove the
offending
 page from your website.

 Sincerely,

 John Gwilliam

I'm forwarding this message on behalf of Bruno Carine.
They are having problems to post to the list, and thus they
asked me for assistance. Please read below.

BTW, I believe their message to be of major importance to
us all. We shouldn't allow a few rotten apples to spoil our
hobby - so please read what Bruno Carine have to say since
it affects us all, and a few of us, more directly.

If you want to take action, please contact Bruno Carine in

 Dear List Members,

this subject is of high interest as it will affect all of us
including the scientists. What the Pellissons are doing is just
unbelievable, they already did contact the French interior
Ministry as well as the Customs offices in different countries.
They are linking the meteorite community to terrorism in different
 ways.

They did send to major medias a 64 pages document full of crap
with parts of YOUR private and public mails to try to establish
that nobody but themselves have the right to sell meteorites!!

Be aware than in a close future we will all have problems shipping
or crossing borders with meteorites, thanks to them!
Just try a Google search for money for terrorism and you will get
straight to their page, listed in first place see it here:

 http://www.google.fr/search?hl=frq=%22money+for+terrorism%22meta=

They are using metanames and cross linking
with pages about horrible things just to attract interest on them.

You all know that we did bring them to court, they already have been
sentenced in emergency during the last Tucson show. Now we are driving
them to serious things, we received their list of pseudo arguments
 from our attorneys.

Here is the list of the people they are involving in front of the Judge
and the Lyon's Court (the second biggest in France), they are using
parts of your public and private emails to try to explain why meteorites
(except of their own) are funding terrorism.

Warning: be aware that these documents are used to prove that either
you 100% agree with them and support their ideas or that you are involved
 in funding islamist networks..

 Privates:
 Mr Bernd Pauli
 Mr Eric Twelker
 Mr Art Jones
 Mr Alain Carion
 Mr Michael Farmer
 Mr Michel Franco
 Mr Aziz Habibi
 Mr Nelson Oakes
 Mr Bob Verish
 Mr Greg and Adam Hupe
 Mr Tracy Latimer
 Mr Luc Labenne
 Mr Dean Bessey
 Mr Matteo Chinellato

 Scientists:
 Dr Zenda
 Dr Grossman
 Dr Barrat
 Dr Treiman
 Dr Huss
 Dr Gillet
 Dr Jambon
 Dr Bunch
 the whole Meteoritical Society
 the AMNH of New York
 the MNHN of Paris

And this is only a resume of the thing, it would take days to translate
the horrors they are building. As an example they are trying to explain
that the MNHN of Paris did send Michel Franco to build a new network
for funding Al Queda and they sent that to the French medias...

What will be the next step? Child abuse? Drug traffic? If we don't stop
them now be sure everybody will get in trouble because of the wonderful
 hobby we share: meteorites.

As your names and private emails have been used by them in a public
court and have been transmitted to medias and Customs offices
worldwide, you have the right to ask them a translated copy of the way
they are using it, you can urge them by law to stop using your names and
 mails too

We stay available if you need further advices.

Sorry to send such a terrible post, but the community should be aware of
 what is going on.

 Sincerely,

 Bruno Carine

Hello Walter and list, caliche is deposited by water. If you soak a

 Hello all,

Todays Rocks From Space Picture of the Day of the oriented Amgala
individual brought a question to mind. In the May 2004 issue of
Meteorite
magazine, Martin Horejsi wrote: While the Bensour shower was filled with
wonderfully oriented individuals, Amgala was almost devoid of them with
just
three found to date. Since that time additional Amgala individuals
obviously have been found and brought to market. As an oriented Amgala
owner, I'm curious as to the approximate number that now might be out
there.
So, if you fellow oriented Amgala owners out there don't mind sending me
their information in, I'll go ahead and tabulate the results and then
report
 to the list.
As an aside, my oriented Amgala is a 32.5 gram stone.
 Cheers,
 Frank
