No, Non, No!!!

it was really great
I think something went wrong at the Lang's auction - Michael Blood's was
great!
I stayed until the tables were cleared and only saw happy faces!
I heard no complains.
This is a great event and specially for me going there for the first time, I
would have picked up if there was pickering going on.
All the people enjoyed themselves, even the wives! ;-)

So come on and find out for yourself!

Shoot me down if you want, but do we really need to have all these nasty
auction related postings on this list?

It's really not showing anyone in a good light, fair enough people want
to defend themselves etc but do we actually need a witch hunt in public
over something like this?

[If] there was a potential fraud phone or any wrong doing then surely
just phone up the police, - speculation and rumour will only cause more
and more arguments.

So (RESPECTFULLY) maybe everyone should maybe just take a deep breath
and calm down a bit!?

To be honest I'm quite glad I wasn't at Tucson jeez - what a bunch.

Re: [meteorite-list] AUCTION RESULTS - Blood and Lang

2007-02-08 Thread Moni Waiblinger-Seabridge

Hi Jim and All,

I also go to an auction and it is the same as you describe.
I think if you have to wait until all the auction is done, it is simply
because there isn't enough staff.
At the auction I attend, there is two auctioneers that take turns and then
about three people helping with showing, putting the items on the back table
and as you wrote, getting the items and handing them to the winner after his
purchase.

Also if someone has called in a bid, the auctioneer just starts with that
price and if he gets more, then the other bidder who bid higher wins the
item.

Moni

While I agree with you in principle for big professional auction houses,
you

need to attend an auction in Denver or Tucson before reserving judgement.
Some of them are very informal and not like a normal auction situation.

In at least one auction that I attended, the procecure is unlike a normal
auction in such a way that tends to depresses the prices in my opinion.

For example, in a normal auction if I buy item number 10 out of 200 items
offered and
want to go home, then I just check out, pay and go home. At at least one
Tucson auction that I attended,
I would have to wait until the end of the auction to pay and then pay in
bidder number order. So instead of going home at 8:00 when I am done
buying

I have to wait until until all bidding on all items is completed before I
can go home which could be well after midnight. This makes it so that
people don't tend to bid unless they REALLY, REALLY want the item. So
prices are certainly
not representative to prices much may have been realized in one of the big
auction houses.

Just my two cents...

Hi once more,

I don't agree with this position simply because isn't that why one goes to
an auction?

Too deal and get a deal.
So if you display the prices it should not matter at all.
Actually I would think, what a steal people got purchasing the meteorites
for a low price and if I look for a specific one, check the next time there
is an auction and if it is offered, see if I couldn't win it at a low price
too.

Auction prices don't reflect the true market values.
I am sure everyone knows that!

I agree with Michael Blood's position that the public posting of final

Hi All,

I had such a wonderful time at Tucson, my very first time after 5 years of
enjoying my passion for meteorites!
I will be forever grateful to Bob V. to introduce me to this great hobby
because I am so delighted to have met so many of you in Tucson!
What a diverse group and so much in common!
Also some new people I have met, I recommended to them to join this list.

Ensisheim was wonderful too and I hope to go back there also!
But Tucson, it was fantastic!

I met so many members that I have written to on the list and I am so happy
to finally have met you!
Missed Art though!
I actually didn't recognize Mexico Doug, we argued for fun on who he really
was!
And also McCartney.
I thought he lived in the UK.
He had to convince me that, no, he lives in Texas!!
The Chladni's Heir made it - what pleasure to meet Martin again!
And finally Andreas and Stefan.
I really hope you will come again next year!

The birthday bash was too much fun.
Happy Birthday Geoff and Steve!
The awards rightfully given to the deserving people!
I know if I would mention all the people I had conversations with, I would
forget one or two.
So I want to thank all of you for being great meteorite enthusiasts and wish
you well.

I hope some of you who haven't been to Tucson to join us next year, you will
have a great time!

I am sending my yahoo photos URL in case some of you want to see some
pictures.

Bright Light Spotted in the Sky
MyFox (St. Louis, Missouri)
February 4, 2007

We've had several reports Sunday night of a big ball of green
light that was seen in the sky heading towards the north.

Several area police agencies also received calls from people 9
who saw the strange light.

It was seen just before 8 pm local time.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reported sightings from as far
south as Cape Girardeau, and as far west as Jefferson City.

The St. Francois County Sheriff's Departments tells FOX 2 News
that have a report indicating the light is being investigated
by FEMA, NORAD, and the FAA, and it might have been either a
meteorite shower or space debris burning in the atmosphere.

chondrite found in the United States. The total weight was 70 grams. It

pieces left, some with fusion crust. This is a very unique find and I
will only be able to sell a few pieces. I will have the situ pictures
on a CD to go along with the meteorite. Contact me off list for a price
or to view in person in Tucson.

2007-01-24 Thread Moni Waiblinger-Seabridge

Hello Bernd and All,

thank you very much for the article.
I have read some articles on classification, but this one written by Frank
Stroik is easily understood.

I do have a better idea of how classifying a meteorite is done now.
I can see also how mistakes are made, also given the time one has to put in
to have the proper result.
Do you think with so many NWAs being classified that some are done faster
than others and I don't mean only NWAs?

So I have heard before that some universities have a different outcome.
Having read the article its better understood why.

Subject: [meteorite-list] eBay no longer a community
Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2007 20:35:14 -0800

Hello All,

I was grossly disappointed at eBay's new policy of hiding the
identity of all bidders
in auctions over $200. Knowing at least a few of the bidders made
one feel like he
was taking part in a community. Oh, Fred bought that, or Sam
didn't bid high
enough, was part of the fun of knowing who was who - who was
building their collection
with similar items, who was buying and who was selling. Knowing who
was present
at the auction made a person feel he was among friends. Entire
networks of collectors,
list-serves, and even get-togethers evolved because of that comradery.

Now eBay has killed that!

Imagine going to a live auction where everyone who entered was hooded!
I'd like to see Sotheby's or Christie's try that. What a damper that
would put on
the friendly competition.

If anyone has an in to the eBay policy makers, please let me know how to
make
a very loud protest heard!

I just called eBay and talked to a junior customer handler. He was
really only
interested in giving me the party line. Is eBay likely to go
back? I asked.
No, that won't happen, he said.

The official BS reason is to prevent us from getting fraudulent
counterfeit eBay
offers. Yes, I get 20 of those a day. Also adverts for Viagra,
notices that someone
wants to send me $20,000,00, mortgage and lottery offers, etc. That
is the price
that one pays for a freely networked community.

Wait until one of the massive online communities starts putting up
auctions, where you
can walk into a bourse and see all the meteorites or cryptographic
equipment nicely
displayed. It is coming, and eBay won't be there...

Cheers?
Nick

Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2007 16:33:25 -0500

Since we're on the subject, I thought I would share this with you.

I wrote this poem after taking a Geology and Space Science course two
years ago from Dr. Mike Reynolds.

Ode to Dr. Mike and His Space Cadets Wildacres, 2005

   By Anita D. Westlake

I must confess I didn't know

Binoculars were fun

We talked about them that first class

Until the day was done.

The second day was telescopes

The big, the bad, the Go-To's

It's amazing what I didn't know

That just goes to show you!

Next we played with our planispheres

And it's here that I must lament,

I looked in the sky both day and night

And never found the grommet.

The things we saw that first clear night

The Moon! Jupiter! Saturn!

The oohs and ahhs that issued forth

Were to become a pattern.

The moon was full and shining bright

And Saturn wore its rings

But Jupiter's four trailing moons

Was the most amazing thing!

And then we learned of meteorites

Those visitors from space

Dr. Mike says Keep Looking Up!

They'll land right on your face!

Ataxites, Achrondrites

Who knew there were such words?

There's one called Camel Donga

That sounds just like a...bird

We learned what makes stars twinkle

It's written down in song

But you haven't lived until you've learned

A meteorite from wrong.

How could I live this long on Earth

Not seeing the stars so boundless?

I've always looked down at the ground

In my life as a Rockhoundress.

So now I'm really troubled

With this new love that I've found

When I leave the comfort of my home

Should I look up or down?

Some one cover this already?
I read that the majority of the Nininger Collection was sold for $275,000,
far below the listed value.

You can read more about it in the book Find A Falling Star.

Yes, David's site is a great resource.

Here are a few thin section pictures I took of NWA 2976, one of the

  Hi Bernd and List,

Thank you Bernd for directing interested parties to David's web site. He
really does have a great deal of information regarding NWA 4587 noted.
One
question that I have been asked a few times today is, What are those
occasional dark inclusions within the orange matrix? In an email I
  received
when I asked the scientists the very same question last month, this is
the
reply, Based on our experience with NWA 2400 and NWA 2976, the large
  black
  grains
in the slice of GH-231 (NWA 4587) you sent is chromite and ilmenite...
Scientists at the University of Washington will be probing those dark
inclusions for further study soon, so perhaps something new will be
  gleaned
by studying larger samples provided by the 530-gram NWA 4587 stone. If
we
learn more, I will report back here with any additional information.

  Hello,

Most of us will by now have read and seen Greg's AD re: NWA 4587.
If you are looking for a thorough and in-depth description of this
unique
meteorite that had at first been classified as a highly metamorphosed,
unbrecciated eucrite similar to the vesicular Ibitira and was then
found
to be similar to the CR clan (!) - by the way, visually it resembles
the
sugary-textured Agoult - then I would recommend you go to David's
  excellent website:

  http://www.meteoritestudies.com/

.. go to UNGROUPED ACHONDRITES and then click on: NWA 011 where you
will find a wealth of information on this NWA achondrite beauty!

Pardon? Oh, you would like to know if I have purchased some of this
  unique
material? Yes, I must proudly admit. I have. Here is the item number of
  my
beautiful, little partslice just in case you care ;-)

somewhere in the

If it shows up on ebay or at Tucson or in any other manner will someone

Thanks,

miss seeing
them daily, but I don't want to lose any more. Must have been a

This is pretty cool... being the first to see the

Hi everyone, I was too busy loading over 150 auctions
last night to post this.

There was a large fireball over northern Arizona last
night. My sister saw it from Show Low at around ~7:15
pm I think. She said it was very large and green and
looked to be heading to the west or southwest. An hour
later Robert Ward called me excited, saying that while
driving near Kingman, he saw the same fireball light
up the sky. I just spoke to him again and he said that
in Prescott, the fireball lit up the entire sky nearly
like daylight through the clouds!
Has anyone heard any other reports? All of Arizona is
under a large rain/snowstorm right now, so hunting is
out of the question at the moment.

Hi Rob,

You are completely right.
I used the worst phrasing I could!
Wanted to write by ALL means...No misspelling, no odd translation (in
French it just means the same), just... rush and inadvertence! And I used
it twice!
Now I also realize that even by all means is not strong enough to express
my support to Bernd. I agree that perhaps by all measures would be more
appropriate to use here.

Rob, thank you very much for the remark that certainly now throws more
light on what I had in mind. My error was not even humorous, just
unintentional, as I could never have imagined writing my friend Bernd would
be far from the best choice...I wouldn't write that even for an ennemy!
Bernd, who is as fluent in English as he is in...French!, most certainly
understood my poor phrasing and corrected by himself. He knows all about my
appreciation of his achievements, erudition and his always friendly willing
to help.

Finally Rob, your remark not only helps removing doubts regarding my
appreciation of Bernd's achievements and kindness but is perhaps here the
best advertising for his nomination. I am so very happy he is being
unanimously proposed.

All my best wishes for Christmas and a happy New Year 2007 (with many finds
and, why not, some falls into your backyards ?) to all of you, English
natives or speaking, overchannel (UK), overseas (US), down
under(Austr. NZ) and...wherever in the world.

Don't forget, Ensisheim-2007 is now expecting your visit! A sweet
opportunity to learn some essential...French!

Hi Zelimir,

When I read the beginning of your message, I thought you were about to
suggest nominating a name OTHER than Bernd -- which of course would be
perfectly fine to do. Only upon reading your whole message did it occur
to me that, as good as your English is (which is excellent by the way),
it

isn't your first language, so you wouldn't necessarily realize the
unintentionally humorous errors in your post:

Bernd is by no means the best candidate deserving such a nomination.

I think what you meant to say was something like Bernd is by all
measures

the best candidate deserving such a nomination. The way you've worded
it, you're suggesting that Bernd isn't even close to being the best
choice

(implying that you can think of many others more deserving). ;-)

I'm pretty sure it's just a translation oddity from French to English, as
you use the by no means phrase (again, with humorous result) at the end
of your post: ...on behalf of many silent listees from my area who ...
are by no means honored to have him as friend. I'm sure your intent
was,

of course, very honored. ;-)

I certainly agree that Bernd is an excellent choice assuming public
nomination for a Harvey Prize is acceptable protocol.

Best wishes and Joyeux Noël from across the Pond,

I've just returned from an expedition from a very rural location. I was
fortunate to witness the Geminids at their peek.

I counted 91 meteors in one hour.

The best occured as I was setting up for the show and was looking down. I
had my car suddenly illuminated and thought it was headlights until I saw
the entire farm field light up. I look up in time to see the trail end of
a phenominal fireball. No sound phenomenon, however.

Best part was that we found a 847g iron earlier that day. Great way to end
an excellent day.

Hi list,
I am pleased to announce a new meteorite recovered on May 11, 2006 from
Republic County near the town of Kackley, KS.
A fully crusted single stone weighing 1.368 kg was found adjacent to a
cultivated field. The specimen was classified by
Paul Sipiera at the Planetary Studies Foundation in Galena, Illionois.
Additional material will be sent to the University of Washington
for further study. The specimen has been classified as an H4 chondrite, Fa
18.56, Fs 17.7. Below is a link to several photos compliments
of Mark Bostick and myself, larger res. photos available on request. The
main mass will remain with the Kansas Meteorite Society Collection in
Wichita, Kansas. The data
is being submitted to the nomenclature committee by Paul Sipiera with a
proposed name of “Kackley”.

Since the list has a large combined knowledge and plenty of previous
experience what is the best way to dry out meteorites gathered from a wet
environment? would soaking in anhydrous alcohol or ether prior to oven
drying do a better job of removing moisture from the interior? Some of the
meteorites I have found locally are sweating rust even after repeated
drying . Since meteorites conduct electricity has anyone ever tried using
it to stabilize rusty rocks? seems to me the electricity would get right to
the metal remove the water and reduce the oxidation but I am not sure if it
would cause other undesirable effects. On another note after playing fetch
using nwa 869 meteorites for several months, my Lab Trixie has found her
first meteorite, a small ordinary chondrite.
   Best regards
   Steve

Subject: [meteorite-list] Brenham Project
Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2006 09:13:47 -0500

This letter is my first post to the Meteorite List after being a long-time
reader. I am the fortunate beneficiary of much recognition from so many of
you related to my Brenham Project with Steve Arnold. Thank you for your
kind words and encouragements. With this posting, I wanted to publicly
recognize certain individuals who are the main contributors, in my opinion,
to our most recent expedition and without whose efforts and creativity the
wonderful story written by Associated Press would not have been possible.

It was last July when I began conversations with Carolyn Sumners, Director
of Astronomy of the Houston Museum of Natural Science. I offered HMNS an
opportunity to join Steve and I in Kansas on a meteorite search and
recovery project. Mrs. Sumners was excited about the opportunity and asked
me what specifically HMNS could contribute as far as unanswered questions
about the find. I told her we questioned the timing/age-date assigned to
the fall and we wished to try to pin-down its timing. We discussed several
methods for age-dating and left her and her experts to further discuss and
implement the methods for age-dating. A second question is the direction
of the meteorite fall, specifically, its bearing and descent angle. This
question is more complex and we felt we needed to gather as much survey
information as possible without disturbing the meteorites and the soil
around them. At this point, Mrs. Sumners contacted Dr. Essam Heggy with
the Lunar Planetary Institute regarding his ground penetrating radar work.

I informed Steve and he said he would do his best for the museum. I
remained convinced he could find another meteorite.

After all details with the HMNS, LPI, and our landowners were worked out, I
contacted our good friend, Darryl Pitt, to assist with all facets for
release of information to the public regarding this expedition.

You all know our results.

Steve was able to pull the golden rabbit out of the hat. My sincere
appreciation and congratulations to him once again and, if you have seen
the strewnfield you understand why. He tells me he feels his ability to do
so again from this point on will be less and less. Therefore, our search
and recovery efforts for Brenham meteorites is beginning to wind-up.

Carolyn Sumners' group from HMNS included astronomers, geologists,
paleontologists and archeologists with long and storied excavation and
recovery experiences. It was a joy and a treat to be an observer of their
efforts. I am excited for them and their unique meteorite recovery. Good
going.

Dr. Heggy, with LPI, was faced with a substantial change of conditions
from those he originally anticipated in the field. Southwest Kansas had
received quite a bit of rain and in the last three days, we were in
constant heavy drizzle, blown sideways by 20-plus mile an hour winds. If
not for the excitement of the project and all involved, it would have been
miserable to be in such conditions for the 12 or more hours per day. Dr.
Heggy adapted his equipment and techniques and continued to proceed as
diligently as the rest of us without becoming discouraged. His efforts too
were rewarded.

Finally, but certainly not least, Darryl Pitt single-handedly prepared the
initial press release and then he, along with the brilliant efforts of a
colleague of his in New York, facilitated the amazing Associated Press
story by Roxana Hegeman. Darryl worked closely with Roxana a day or two
before Monday's final excavation of the museum's 154-pound pallasite and
she was very well prepared for what to expect on the final day. It was
only yesterday evening I learned that Roxana's story has enjoyed the widest
world-wide distribution of any story ever pertaining to meteorites (with
the exception of the announcement of ALH84001). Certainly amazing.

I am grateful to be a part of the Brenham Project. I have learned much
more than I ever anticipated being a meteorite collector. This particular
chapter of our project was such a treat to watch unfold. I am reminded of
Greg's words to the List that this is an awesome story where meteorite
hunters, collectors and scientists can join to work together closely in the
field using new equipment to make a wonderful meteorite recovery. I am
blessed to have participated.

Congratulations to Carolyn Sumners and her HMNS team for their thoughtful
work and the additional, continuing work to come both in age-dating the
fall and hopefully determining the fall direction and angle.

Great-going Dr. Heggy for your successful use and application of the GPR.

Hats-off to Darryl for facilitating the AP wire story or, as I

Hi All,
About 7 years ago I stumbled upon a page in the web site of Walter
Branch. The page was a listing of all meteorites reported to have struck
something when they fell to earth - some man made object, animal, or
even a human being (such as the case of Sylacauga).
I immediately found myself entranced by these very special
meteorites and began collecting as many of these extraordinary falls as
possible. I had already been collecting meteorites for many years, but this
new realm had an entrancing effect on me like none other before, with
the possible exception of the obsession I developed to collect and offer
every non-Antarctic SNC when there were only 6 of them known at the
time (though only 4 had ever been available when I started).
I read more and more, found other lists, began collecting photos,
and, of course, buying at least a collection specimen of everything I could
lay my hands on. In fact, I was so amazed at how difficult it was to find
these precious rarities after the first dozen or so, I began in earnest to
buy all the material I could find of the most rare varieties rarely seen
(and I DON'T mean rarely seen as the term is used in eBay ads!)
It has taken me well over 5 years to accumulate the stock I have
built up and I have spent the last several months putting together a
web site that not only lists each of the falls I offer in this rare
category, but in most instances shows a photo or two of the building, car,
roof, barn, mailbox, etc. actually struck by the meteorite.
These are the car bashers, mailbox crunchers, house smashers,
animal

killers and human maulers. This is the real rogues gallery of the meteorite
world.
You are all invited to drop in and take a look see. I kept waiting
and waiting to open this site because I always have one or two things
on the way - but with over 30 falls represented, I decided I would use
my 60th birthday as an excuse to launch this puppy.
I am indebted to numerous people including, but not limited to,
Walter Branch, Martin Horejsi, Bob Walker, Robert Haag, Edwin Thompson,
Al Lang, and the list goes on on. I hope you enjoy what you see. Many of
the photos took many, many hours of research - and some of those were the
easier ones to find.
There are links to dozens of videos of the Peekskill fireball, a
photo of oh, well, just go there for yourselves. Check it all out at:

http://www.michaelbloodmeteorites.com/Hammers.html

This site will be obsessively kept up to date in terms of stock
availability. I know I haven't always done this in my regular catalog, but
this page will be updated with each and every sale and all new material
as it comes in on a daily basis.
Can you tell I am excited about it?
Best wishes, Michael
PS: If you have or know of any applicable material not on my site that is
available for mere money, please let me know. I will give anyone a nice
finder's fee for any material I end up purchasing as a result of a lead
given to me.

There are many fine meteorite collectors and dealers that do not belong to

Why is there no .something after the CO3.
Wouldn't this tell you the chondrule texture of the CO.

Hello List, and Hello,

.. especially to those who purchased one of Greg's NWA 4441 CO3.2,

My 5.1-gram endcut of this CO3.2 arrived this morning and my first
impression was: Oh, one of those Hot Desert ugly ducklings! But
I was curious what it would look like under my Russian stereo scope
and when I looked at it, I held my breath. The ugly duckling quickly
turned into a beautiful, carbonaceous prince with tiny chondrules
galore (the larger ones a mere 0.5 mm!) - some of them with crisp,
dark rimming (probably sulfide and/or magnetite).

Of course, I had to take a picture (magnification = 16x) that I would
like to share with anyone interested and especially with those who also
purchased one of these slices.

Best,

Bernd

Subject: [meteorite-list] forget about yesterday

Ok, here goes.
I had a long nearly two hour phone call to Adam Hupe
last night. We solved some issues, and cleared the
air.
We both pushed each others buttons today and a fight
ensued. Most of you know us, so this is nothing new,
we both know how to do it like pro's.

Adam took offense at my post regarding shipping. I
never meant it to regard him or Greg, but they saw it
that way. They charge $4.05 for shipping, and they
ship priority for that price. I was saying that people
who charge $4.05 and ship first class are ripping
people off, not people who charge that and who use the
same money for shipping. So if Adam writes $4.05
shipping and sends it that way, they are of course,
NOT ripping people off. If you bid on their item, then
you agree to that shipping price.
We cleared that issue up and I do not want anyone to
think that I meant they were guilty anything. That was
a major misunderstanding apparently. I am taking care
of it now.

Things went from bad to worse since we both are
hotheads and did not talk until too late. I am
stressed out from a long trip and the pressure of
paying the credit cards off forced me to start selling
today. When Adam hit back at my sales, well, there we
go.

So, please just forget today, we will start over fresh
tomorrow, our 6 month blow up is over, and back to
business of meteorites.

I think Strope got it right, it is over 3100.00 grams. Exaughsted from
another day of Muonionalusta hunting. Out of 7 teams hunting today, there
was only one 10 kilogram meteorite found. This area is odd, some days are
great, some produce nothing.

Rob's message reminded me of the new launch vehicle that
my wife developed. We call it the Ragu Rocket. We have
not compared other pasta sauces so feel free to experiment.

Background...
While working in the back yard I found an empty Ragu bottle
next to the fence. We have nice neighbors on the other side
so the idea of them tossing it over the fence was out of the
question. We have squirrels, raccoons and possums that
go through the back yard so I figured one of them needed a
little Italian snack and dragged it over from the trash. I walked
across the yard to throw it in the trash can and discovered 2
interesting observations upon approaching the trash can.

1. The trash can was close to full with an upside down plastic
bag on the top with a rounded hole in it (vs an animal clawing
or chewing it open).

2. There were splatters of sauce inside the trash can and on the
cement on the side of the can opposite from the wall I found the Ragu
bottle.

My hypothesis is that my wife:
1. Threw away a partial bottle of Ragu with the cap on.
2. The capped Ragu bottle was positioned upside down in the trash can.
3. The bacteria in the sauce produced enough gas to eventually blow the lid
off.

4. The force was enough to launch the Ragu bottle across the yard.

Question? How much Ragu is needed to reach escape velocity?

Paul

And if you're into doing some crazy science experiments, try
dumping an entire pack of Mentos into a newly opened 2-liter

the resulting mess is less sticky.) For the most impressive
results, you need to design a delivery system that will smoothly
dump the entire stack of Mentos in less than a second. (Like

They are having a great time picking and eating lots of blueberries as

Hello List.
Its alvays nice to comeback to home from succesfull and exciting trip and
find that You are slandered by others who are also not clean like

Yes we found specimens of this new incredible fall. Fragments from first
recovered specimens that hit iron plate. Fragments that could found
Martinsen family, people from Oslo university, Americans, Germans,
Norwegians, Swedens hunter teams and hundreds of other persons who visit
this place before we arrive. We was lucky enough to find them in area
where
others walk destroying them with his shoes. Thats why we are pirats,
thiefs

and bad guyz ?

When we finaly arrived into fall site of first specimen after 4 hours of
searching this place we enter into empty property of Mr Ragnar Martinsen
to
make some photos of ourself and iron plate that lay on the ground. There
was
NO TIME to wait for someone from Martinsen family and ASK for permission
to
enter. We have only 2,5 day for hunt then some of our group must comeback
to
regular work. Next day we meet Martinsen family at their house and make
with

then nice long talk and ofcourse some photos with lucky finder. Norvegian
people are very friendly and Im sure it was not a problem to enter
Martinsen property in that specific case.

We look aroun forest, grass fields, streets etc. around Ragnars property,
but we
not enter into growing wheat/corn fields what do European team member from
a

country starting with G and finaly was loudy removed by the locals
patroling this area. No comments.

I lost my will to write detailed report from our unplanned and express
hunting trip even if I finally found my first meteorite, the special one
and

beautifull one as I alvays dreamed.

Hello Everyone,

Haviland's meteorite festival is in full gear now. It has been a pleasure
working with the city on this event and I can now providealmost full
details on the festival. Things keep getting added daily so it will be
interesting to see how things go.

First and foremost, Steve Arnold and family will be in the town with the
1430 lb. Brenham he discovered last fall. The festival is to honor the
return of the meteorite and all events were more or less planned around it.
 (Congrats. again Steve).

7 am to 10 am: Helicopter Rides (must be booked in advance). Sounds like a
great chance for me to get a strewn field photograph.

8 am to 10 am: Disc Golf. Not sure if this is a tournament or if there is
prizes or the like. My oldest brother John plays disc golf so adding this
event to the festivalhas him coming out.

10:30 am: Parade, Downtown Haviland.

11 am to 5 pm: Meteorite Exhibits.

These include:

Dr. Don Stimpson, Ph. D.

Kansas Meteorite Society, Mark Bostick

Steve Arnold (1430 lb.) Pallasite Meteorite Display.

Balloon Launch and Food Vendors: 1 pm to 5 pm

Other events, many aimed at children, include: Banana Bike Races, Face
Painting, Metal Detector Field, Clown Shows, Children's Science Art Corner,
Meteor Story Time, Moonwalk, Big Slide, Quilt Display and Demonstration,
Portrait Drawling, Speakers, Live Entertainment and Meteorite Dig.

Later evening events include: Historical Tour 6 pm to 8 pm, Picnic in the
Haviland City Park, Fireworks, Stargazing and the International Space
Station Passover.

More things will likely be added to fun filled, meteorite packed, day of
activities.

Should anyone want to fly in, you would book your tickets for Wichita,
Kansas. Jerry Calvert, me and other Kansas Meteorite Society members will
be leaving here early for the festival, however I image one of us could
give someone a ride to and from Wichita, saving you renting a car, if
desired.

Special thanks to Jeff D. Christenson, the mayor of Haviland for noting the
importance of the 1430 lb. Brenham discovery and arranging for the city to
pay for expenses to bring the meteorite back and to organize this event.

Hope to see you there,

Hi List members,

talking about Ensisheim,
I am going to be there this year.
My sister who lives in Germany will be taking me there, hence she has the
car.
So to my German list members, she lives in Spaichingen, what is the best way
there?
And Bernd, haven't seen you on the list lately, just mentioned that because
I love your responses and miss seeing your input,

but I do hope to meet you and Paulinchen ;-)
at the show.

With best regards,
Moni

But let's give him a hand (or two):

1. the meteorite's name starts with a P
2. it's an H chondrite
3. S4; W2
4. Finder: Mike Farmer
5.Classified by S. Afanasiev, Vernad

I totally agree with Bernd that Thomas was very lucky indeed to have been
able to keep them and first of all very lucky to have found some.
As I understood from previous posts, I thought it was very hard to find some

Maybe Thomas can add to this when he sees the posts.
Maybe its shale (?) that he found, that was another idea I heard.
Bernd have you seen them?

I believe the best to do is what Gary has in mind, ask the ranger or whoever

Hello Gary and List,

Interesting - they let them keep their finds.

Gary, if I were you, I wouldn't count on that. Thomas was just lucky they
did not
search his/their pockets! But if you should go there and try your luck (be
careful,
please and do not let your passion for meteorites carry you away!), it will
be of
interest that the area where the highest concentration of Canon Diablo
meteorites
occurred is the area in the northeast quadrant that extends directly from
the crater

rim to about 3/4 of a mile from the crater (mostly smaller pieces).

Larger chunks were found in the southeast quadrant about 1 1/2 to 2 miles
away from
the crater rim and another one three to four miles away from the crater rim
in a small

area about 45° south of east (or 45° east of south).

Cheers,

Bernd

Subject: [meteorite-list] Congratulations to Jason Utas

Would like to publicly congratulate one of our younger
List members, Jason Utas, for his new California
meteorite, this state's first Acapulcoite, Superior
Valley 014.

There is a preliminary write-up for his find here:

http://tinyurl.com/74glt

And it just so happens that, back in 2002, I took an
image of this find:

http://www.geocities.com/bolidechaser/drylakes/suv012-8.jpg

This image was taken in the field from the hatch-back
end of the Utas SUV shortly after Jason and his
father, Peter Utas, made these finds at Superior
Valley (in 2002). Even at that time, Jason was
pointing out that this small (1.77g) stony was
different looking. I agreed with him on that, and
suggested that he and his father take it to UCLA and
let Alan Rubin examine it.

In anticipation of them doing this, I offered to help
them get provisional numbers from the NomCom for all
of these finds. And as an aid in getting this done, I
suggested that before I take the image, they should
line up all of their finds in the order that they were
found. A minor point, but what resulted is this image
with all their finds side-by-side, and in both
numerical and chronological order. It sort of
explains why we request provisional numbers, even for
these small meteorites. It just seems prudent. And
when one of them ends up being an Acapulcoite, it
gives ample justification.

It was serendipity that we crossed paths in the Mojave
Desert on that weekend in September 2002. And the
Utas were very obliging to let me image their recent
finds. So I am very appreciative to them for having
given me the opportunity to record, what is now 3
years later, a not-so-minor event in California
meteorite-recovery.

Jason, along with his dad, have gone on to find many
more California meteorites. And Peter deserves some
credit for getting his son involved in
meteorite-recovery at such an early age. Jason and
Peter should be proud of their accomplishments.

Bob V.

That makes 4 Collections to explore. And yes, I know it is getting a bit

As soon as I can, Promise

And I still have more. If you are interested by Cavour, Rupota, Haxtun or

Its all classificated from 2004 and this is not appear
in the last bulletin, when other meteorites, found 4-5
months ago is immediatly appear in the last
bulletin...many strange this. My laboratory have sent
several emails with all analysis ready, but not have
received any answer! The meteorites its classificated
from Museo di Scienze Planetarie of Prato, well know
from the Met.Society and for every piece I have give
20 grams or the 20% of the mass.

Dear Friends and Listees:

Steve is in the field and has asked me to post the following press release
on his behalf.

Steve did not quote any prices to the media, so the $12 million figure is
just one of those colorful media exaggerations. However, the pallasite is
extraordinary and is definitely oriented (something you cannot really see
in these photos) -- it's one big nose cone. Additional photos will be
forthcoming.

The find, at 1,400 pounds, beats the next largest Brenham found by
Stockwell in 1949 (1,000 lbs) and therefore becomes the main mass. I'm sure
you'll all want to join me in congratulating our friend Steve on this find
of a lifetime.

I know you all want to see the photos, taken by Steve's partner Phil Mani,
so here they are:

http://www.aerolite.org/brenham.htm

Well done Steve!!

Geoff

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2005

WORLD RECORD METEORITE UNEARTHED BY HUNTER IN KANSAS

A 1,400-pound stony-iron pallasite meteorite found in Kiowa County is the
largest of its type ever recovered in the United States, and the third
largest in history

Steve Arnold, 39, a professional meteorite hunter from Arkansas has found
and excavated a meteorite weighing almost three quarters of a ton from a
farmer’s field near Haviland, Kansas. The discovery was made in late
October using sophisticated metal detecting equipment. It is one of the
most valuable meteorite finds ever made in the United States and is of
historic and scientific importance.

Meteorites — rocks that have fallen to Earth from outer space — are of
considerable value to both scientists and private collectors. Meteorite
collecting is a growing hobby, with thousands of enthusiasts worldwide
willing to pay high prices for these rare sky rocks.

Brenham meteorites, named after the Kiowa Country township in Kansas, were
first found in the area during the 1890s, when frontier farmers sold a
number of them to universities and mineral dealers. Brenham specimens are
today on display in the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the
Field Museum in Chicago, and other prominent institutions. They are of a
rare type, known as pallasites, which account for only 1% of all known
meteorites. Pallasites consist of a nickel-iron matrix full of colorful
olivine crystals (the semi-precious gemstone peridot) and are very
beautiful when cut and polished. Well prepared pallasite specimens often
sell for between twenty and forty dollars per gram.

Mr. Arnold’s discovery is the largest pallasite ever found in America, and
the largest oriented pallasite meteorite ever found anywhere in the world.
An oriented meteorite is one which has traveled through Earth’s atmosphere
without spinning and formed a conical or bullet shape as its surface
melted. Oriented pallasites are extremely rare and highly prized by museums
and private collectors.

Steve Arnold was born in Kansas, and has been thinking about Brenham
meteorites for more than a decade. “I traveled all over the world hunting
for meteorites, but came home to make my most important discovery. I was
just sure there were more of them out there waiting to be found,” he said.
Mr. Arnold and his partner Phil Mani — a geologist and oil and gas attorney
from San Antonio, Texas — made arrangements with local landowners, which
allowed them to search for the deeply-buried meteorites. The 1,400-pound
specimen was recovered at considerable depth, and a back hoe was needed to
lift it.

Dr. Art Ehlmann, Curator of the Oscar E. Monnig Meteorite Gallery at Texas
Christian University in Fort Worth visited the site last week, and
described Mr. Arnold’s discovery as “the most significant American
meteorite find in decades.”

weight of 18,272 grams. On Monday October 17, 2005, Jerry Baird recovered
452 pieces with a weight of 7, 265 grams and Buddy Ortego recovered 34
pieces with a weight of 871 grams. The total weight recovered from this one
site is 26,408 grams consisting of 598 pieces. Also recovered from the
impact hole were 10 small irons with a total weight of 8.1 grams. If the
meteorite were in one piece, Dennis Asher believes it would have been the
largest single stony chondrite discovered in Arizona to date.

Right now, Peter Marmet isn't able to post directly to the list, and asked
me to forward the following message:

---

Hello list,

recently we acquired a nice 908 g stone meteorite. The meteorite was kept
by a French lady who lived in Chad for more than 20 years. Before she died
she told her nephew that she saw the meteorite fall sometime in the 60ies.
The only meteorite fall from Chad was in 1961.

Officially there is only one 1kg stone recovered of Djermaia, but Bob Haag
has a 3.7 kg stone according to his catalogue, and Michel Franco has a
2.9 kg stone ( http://www.caillou-noir.com/Djermaia.htm ).

Could this be a 4th mass of Djermaia? I know, it's just a nice meteorite as
long we do not cut a piece for classification... but who dares to
decapitate

such a beauty... we don't!

Picts can be seen here: http://www.marmet-meteorites.com/

Comments welcome!

I did a new polish, a new etch and since that
it rests in my collection and it shows no further activity in rusting.

By the way, I keep my collection room dehumidified.

1- METEORITE: CM2 - ACFER 331 0.1gr - W0 !
Here you have two little pieces of this CM2, both with a cut surface and
fusion crust on the other side. Total weight is 0.1g.
Should you like to have some of this rare meteorite at a more than
reasonable price, then come on board an click:

2- METEORITE: L4/5 O.C. - ACFER 329 - 4.0gr SLICE
Acfer 329 is a fresh and beautiful O.C. This end-cut is very typical, with
large metal flakes, a fair grey matrix and chondrules
with sharply defined boundaries. The cut section has been well polished so
that you can fully enjoy its nice structure. Take off!!!

3- METEORITE: LL4 O.C. - TANEZROUFT 060 15.6gr END-CUT
Tanezrouft 060, a very pourous LL4 with large fractured chondrules is
really unusual. You may not have anything similar in your
collection. Partly fusion crusted, this 15.6g end-cut is staying at
starting price ($29.00 USD). Isn't it an opportunity?

5- METEORITE: ZAG 8.5gr - SPECIAL WITNESSED FALL !
This 8.5g end-cut with a 40x20mm cut surface is showing the two different
typical lithologies of ZAG, in equal proportions. I supply
with this famous meteorite a set of articles about it (see pictures)
printed on A5 format and its Certificate of Authenticity of
course. You know that ZAG is not offered so often on ebay and this one is
just at starting price at the time I write this e-mail...

6- RARE METEORITE: ETTER 20.9gr - L5 O.C. (S5)
Have a nice long slice of this famous Texan meteorite in you collection if
you don't have it yet! Nicely polished on one side, it
has been left rough from cutting on the other side so that you can have two
different contrasts. Worth watching bidding!

Hi All,

I can see why this is confusing!
Wasn't there another meteorite where people had discussions of what kind of
meteorite it was?

Here in the US.
I can not remember which one.
Maybe Gold Basin and Hualapai Wash stones?

Anotherthe probably H7, Metallic Melt Breccia
(Primitive Achondrite) classification its for the
pieces with metal veins...but for the normaly portales
valley without any veins the classification its a H6?
The matrix its paired to a normaly ordinary chondrite.

 heat
  and shock that
wracked an asteroid during the first stages of
  differentiation.

Written by Alex Ruzicka and Melinda Hutson
Department of Geology, Portland State University

Soon after the Portales Valley meteorite fell in
  1998, it was classified
as one of the most common types of meteorites, an
 H6
  ordinary chondrite.
  Although researchers quickly recognized that
  Portales Valley is not a
typical H6 chondrite, there was little agreement
  about how the meteorite
formed. A recent study of Portales Valley by
 Ruzicka
  and colleagues
suggests that the textures, mineralogy, and
  chemistry of the meteorite
are best explained as the first good example of a
  metallic melt breccia.
This meteorite represents a transitional stage
  between chondrites and
various classes of differentiated meteorites, and
  offers clues as to
  how differentiation occurred in early-formed
  planetary bodies.

  Differentiation: a widespread but
 poorly-understood
  process

  Most solar system material underwent
  differentiation, a process
involving melting and separation of liquids and
  solids of varying
  density and chemical composition. However,
  chondritic meteorites escaped
this process and are believed to be pieces of
  undifferentiated
asteroids. All other meteorites, and probably all
  rocks from planets and
large moons, melted when the parent bodies
  differentiated to form cores,
mantles, and crusts. The heat source for
  differentiation is uncertain,
as are the exact physical processes and conditions
  that allowed
differentiation to proceed in small planetary
 bodies
  with weak gravity.
  Proposed sources of heat include
  internally-generated heat from
  short-lived radioactive materials such as
  aluminum-26 (26Al), external
heating from our young active Sun, and heating
  resulting from collisions
between planetary bodies (shock heating). A
 detailed
  study of the
  Portales Valley meteorite suggests that
  differentiation of small
planetary bodies involved a combination of an
  internal heat source and
shock. Shock heating was not the major heat source
  involved in
differentiation, but the stress waves associated
  with even modest shock
events played a critical role in helping materials
  to separate and
  reconfigure during differentiation.

  illustration of differentiation by Granshaw

A sequence of images showing stages in the
  differentiation of a
planetesimal, an early-formed planetary body. The
  image in the left hand
side shows a chondritic planetesimal becoming hot
  enough for melting to
begin. The middle image shows that the heavier
  metallic liquid sinks
toward the center, while the less dense rocky
  material rises toward the
surface. The result is a differentiated object
 with
  a crust, mantle and
core, as shown in the image in the right hand
 side.

Not an ordinary H6 ordinary chondrite

Three features link Portales Valley to H-group
  ordinary chondrites.
These are (1) the presence of rare chondrules with
 a
  rather typical
chondritic texture present in silicate-rich areas,
  (2) the compositions

Hi Everybody,

I have a question about a bolide.
How does a bolide look like when it is in the sky?
Does it look like a cork screw?
My friend Cuc (my meteorite search partner) and I just drove home from our
evening walk and we spotted something in the sky towards the east that
looked like a cork screw pattern in the sky.

I have no idea what this could have been.
Unless...
Anyone?
