[meteorite-list] Sheboygan Wisconsin Lake Michigan meteor Feb 7, 2017

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list Digest, Vol 168, Issue 10
Hello everybody, Let me say a couple of things about this scoundrel in Hong Kong, and what I think he's up to, and then the constant bashing of ebay. Keep a watch out for the meteorites this guy bought, he's probably going to sell them himself either through his ebay user ID, but most likely he has another user ID he's probably going to sell them through. He also may be working with someone who will sell them either on their own website or maybe ebay. Think about it, it makes no sense this guy would buy a meteorite and then burn his bridges to the people he bought the meteorites from who supplied them, so to speak, by making the sellers look bad by purposely leaving negative feedback to make them look bad to keep buyers away. He most likely did this in the hopes that potential buyers would shy away from the sellers he defamed and not buy from them. He's probably planning on selling them and getting the business from buyers that he Thinks he has fooled into not buying from the sellers he has tried to condemn with the negative feedback. Let's all work together to look for these meteorites being sold in the future if we can get all the seller's help. If all the sellers would all post the names of the meteorites and dimensions and weight, and if possible links to the photos would be great. If we can all see or have information about the meteorites he bought then this would help everyone in the meteorite community so that no one buys these meteorites from him or any people he's working with, so we can prevent him from making any money from his scamming and lying. Now, onto the ebay concern, many of us don't have a website, like you Mike F and you Mike G, Anne, etc., and for now ebay suits me fine. Yes, there are scammers on ebay, But with tens of Millions of people on it daily buying and selling from around the world, it's a small price to pay for 24/7 exposure and new customers and cross collectors that happen upon buying their first meteorite, when they were looking for something else. I bought my first meteorites in the early 2000s on ebay from now well known long time dealers when I was looking for my usual favorites at the time, such as mineral specimens and rocks, coins and collectible jewelry, when I got excited and came across cross-sellers who sold meteorites and rocks and coins at the time. It's also fun as a buyer, and even though Ebay is Not perfect, as folks have stated here, but as Ruben said, ebay does realize there are a$$holes, scammers and thieves that pull bizarre and hateful crap like unnecessary negative feedback, and Ebay will and does remove it if you are willing to take the time on the phone to go through the same amount of time you would when calling Amazon or Walmart or Macy's or whatever other business you have to call to solve a problem. Now, granted its different as a seller, but I've found ebay has grown up over the years, even though some folks talk like its archaic, but per Ruben's story and John Humphries and even the posts Dave Cox shares on Facebook about the hassles he gets, they do recognize honest sellers that have imbeciles causing trouble and they will fix a problem such as this troublemaker. Everyone have a great day, and may a large and rare Meteorite land safely in your yard. [meteorite-list] $20,000 for the Maine meteorite fall.
I'm very curious as to how this gentleman at the Mineral Museum in Maine determined that the Maine meteorite is approximately 5 inches in diameter, and "about the size of a softball." Did he have a Super Telescope he was viewing it through at the time, or how did he determine through weather or TV station, or parking lot cameras, or cell phone video with some math equation that it was the size of a softball? I honestly hope they find a piece that large, and that they find it by this summer or fall before the first big snow in the area. I am sure that nearly everyone in America and the World, unless they're a really far rightwing Obama hating conservative, reads the FULL Name, "Barrack Hussein Obama" that it means they're using Barrack and Hussein, as "Key Names" as in "Hot Button" issue names, since it makes the dense slow to respond folks think somethings along the lines of; ( you mean that black Kenyan Muslim President that got the slippery route into office. I'm sure Adam didn't mean for it to sound that way, but what he copied and pasted was written to stir up that hatred and bigotry against Obama. I know there's always the comeback of the republican candidates such as Rafael Edwardo Cruz, to make him sound Really Hispanic and Cuban, but democrats and the media aren't using that full given name, just Ted. I think simply the name "Obama" lets everyone in the World know whom someone is talking about. I think it's a great idea to preserve land, we don't need anymore lame suburbs with the same street names throughout like Buena Vista or Peachtree, except with Street on one, Drive on the connecting street, Lane on the next street and Terrace on the one 3 blocks over. Ted Turner and another intelligent few bought up all the land they could to preserve the beauty between Denver and Colorado Springs, to keep that area from becoming one GIANT tract housing subdivision. Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay heads up - Tissint/Scarborough
Hi Don and list, Don I fully agree with you regarding the fact that All collectors and dealers should keep every single piece of provenance from the past history of who owned and sold the meteorite and I'm sure any Meteorite Dealer in good conscious would agree with you that provenance is very important and that we should all keep the paperwork, card or just a slip of paper or receipt from the previous seller for historical reasons and a good paper trail. I've bought many meteorites over the past 12 or so years that I've been collecting that I wish they had the original paperwork and bought many that had a copy of a card or label from a museum in Europe or America that was 30 or 40 years old or a new copy of the old card when I wished they had given me that old original card. Many I've purchased from a previous dealer had their card and the previous piece of paper, but many have only had a new card from the person that sold it to me with their card or laminated card. My best story to go along with your thoughts and mine too was a rare meteorite I purchased, small, but expensive that I purchased many years ago, then sold to a well known person, then they sold it to another well known dealer who sold it to another well known dealer and then I bought this same exact meteorite back and only got the card from the previous dealer. I thought it would have been wonderful and very nice if I had gotten back even my card and some of the old paperwork, but I assume that in our fast paced time and this age that most are trying to get their names out there and only want us to buy from them so that is why they are selling it with their new card so that we remember them and buy from them again and then if we pass it along then that next person will see their card and contact them for other meteorites instead of the previous sellers. I appreciate you bringing this up Don because now and in the future down the line I am going to try and concentrate more and more on asking any dealer for the previous paperwork for provenance of the sellers before them. I hope your post allows all collectors and dealers to hold onto all of the old paperwork because I think many of us collectors will be looking for old provenance down the road, and I know that I certainly will be demanding it. Have a great day and may a wonderful rare meteorite fall in your yard and all of our fellow collector's yards. You bring up some very real and serious points. I hope I don't upset anyone with this post. I have this huge pet peeve of those that sell meteorites without listing, mentioning and or providing a Provenance on meteorites whether it be on eBay or their Websites. You don't go out and purchase a used car without asking for a car fax or asking questions before purchasing it, and so the same should also be done when interested in purchasing a meteorite from anyone, be it eBay or Dealer Website or any other form of Auctions. I refuse to purchase any meteorite from anyone without this provenance or at the lease asking the Seller on a meteorites history. As I have said before, meteorites don't grow on trees! They arrived in the Sellers possession from somewhere and or from someone other then those meteorites that have been found. Those meteorites found would most likely and better have been sent to a lab for testing and verification so as to start some form of provenance. I highly recommend to ALL Sellers/Collectors and Dealers to inquire the validity of meteorites they intend to purchase. SAVE this provenance label or paper of history so the next future buyer can have a copy of it for his or her records. I find it sloppy professionalism to those who can not provide provenance time and time again on meteorites they sell. Though an ID card helps...the truth is anyone can make up an ID card. A provenance can be traced to the former owner and more questions can then be brought up on the specimens validity. Consider it a blood line so to speak or family tree! Hope I did not offend anyone with my views. I am just trying to protect all of you and your collections including mine by enacting professional organized record keeping practices. - Original Message - From: "Count Deiro" To: "jason utas" ; "Meteorite-list" Sent: Tuesday, February 14, 2012 10:47 AM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay heads up - Tissint/Scarborough __ Visit the Archives

Re: [meteorite-list] 2nd Report from Strewnfield in Edgewood Texas
Hello Mexico Doug and List, Yes, I agree with the information about the hunt and the chase and the fun and perils of wild animals and wild and crazy people. I wrote before to Mexico Doug last night and I was confused and there was a misunderstanding on my part about a quote of Doug's about me, and I understand now and contacted him last night and all is well and now I understand he was agreeing with me on the things that we are all concerned about while trying to hunt for meteorites and everything involved. All the best to Mexico Doug and the list. Brian Hi George, Eric & Guido I generally agree with Count Guido; in the thick hammocks surrounded by rich swampland where you see the panthers in Florida, the light can get very tricky and towards animals all tend to black. I'm sure Eric saw what he said, was definitly no wuss, and frequently footprints in the sandy soil can be very difficult to dimension and size also vary concordant with that besides the size/weight of the animal so that really isn't a very reliable indicator although whatever he mentioned he knows best... ...Speaking only for myslef, as I tend to hunt insects more than big cats, that is. Really in Florida the only danger I ever worried about wasa coral snake. But here's a panther in Florida on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uxO79138CQ#t=2m27s lucky catch, but if you spend enough time in there you are bound to run across these guys. Unless threatened, they will do exactly what you see here and to say an experienced hiker in the 'Glades would be scared is really not likely. Probably there are more food resources everywhere here so they don't become irritable for food and break people's neck's often (never that I heard). Plus the posting of the Big Bend, TX incident was a 6 year old kid. Don't know the details but I get the idea that the parents ought to have kept a better eye on him no matter what is said. People get so bent out of shape over risk. One swimmer gets bit by a shark and there is pandemonium. More people get killed going to the beach in their cars ... same concvept with the poor cats at work. But I guess if I were the unlucky one I'd be whistling a different tune. So better jusdty to take normal precautions and not do anything stupid, and respect the wildlife. I've lost count of all the wild boars, large snakes and weird reptiles and animals I've seen hunting in Mexico and so far keeping one's distance with respect and everyone peacefully co-exists. Oh, but I can get the crap scared out of me, too, don't get me wrong, all alone at night when a cow moos the hell suddenly beside my tent and starts peeing on it and you can't see your hand in front of your face. Then there's the coyotes, I love 'em. But they can get into groups and start wailing like a devil being exorcized and they don't quit. Yeah, I admit those noises can be scarier than swimming with Great Whites, and you know coyotes 99.9% of the time put their tail between their legs and take off. I'm interested in all the aspects of the Meteorite hunt, from the information to the terrain to the locals. Please keep all the information coming. It helps out the Pros and the amateurs that have never been out hunting before and will help them in their first hunt or many down the road. It's a good idea to know what is involved whether it's in the desert or the woods or on farmland. Thanks, Brian now... To Mexico Doug, If you have something to say to me Doug, just send it to me directly. You've sent several posts to the list and then cc me and put a condensed quote in the beginning of the email relating to me, as in this previous post tonight. "Brian wrote: "stay off ... permission to hunt on it."" Eric just mentioned about the Black Panther and others did too and I was trying to help out with the other posts that mentioned large cats in Florida as someone was discussing Bobcats and Florida Panthers. IF you want to demean me then please contact me directly and we'll discuss it between ourselves. I'm posting this here since several people emailed me asking me what the problem was with you having quoted me several times now in emails to the list. IF you have a problem with me then send it directly to me as I should be doing here, but I am killing two birds with one stone. I don't want to get into a list flame war with you, but you have weakly quoted me before and I don't know if it's because I've ruffled your feathers regarding previous posts or what since I don't recall having corresponded with you in any previous emails over the last nearly 13 years I've been collecting meteorites except last month when I mentioned the long posts where people were including several posts together and mentioned that it would be a good idea since many of us use our cell phones during the day to read email and that one included post was good enough instead of the entire posts from several days. You seemed to have taken offense at that and as I mentioned I get several condensed emails per day from Art and each condensed email may contain between 10 and 18 emails in it instead of 1 individual email at a time. I'd like to ask you now in front of the entire list to contact me directly if you have a chip on your shoulder about that or some wild hair about something you were offended by since I've never used your name directly or referred to you before. Re: [meteorite-list] 2nd Report from Strewnfield in Edgewood Texas
Hello World Meteorite Collectors; After reading so many posts about the Meth heads and the crazy guy in the Northern part of the strewn field area and about 5 or 6 different descriptions of what is and what is NOT a Black Panther I couldn't help but jump in. METH is All Across America, Canada and Mexico, it's not just from Oregon to Texas or anywhere in a pocket in between. It's from Newfoundland to British Colombia up to Alaska and the Yukon Territories down the West Coast of the US into Baja and through Mexico and Central America. If you Google Meth and the "Sinaloa Cartel" you will find that "El Chapo" Guzman, the MULTI-Billionaire head Bandito of the Sinaloa Cartel who is on FORBES magazine's Richest Men in the world has started making his Meth in Central America after having been busted for over $100 Million US dollars in Meth related Chemicals in Mexico. Meth is in New York City, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, you name it. I've seen fires reported all over the Midwest and East coast and the South and it's not just a Texas or West Coast US thing and I've read of them and it's very common for people to use a POP Liter bottle to shake it up and mix it. They may be cooking it in Texas for themselves or to transport it to the rest of the US. You would think that Texas would pay more attention to Meth kitchens than other social issues they seem to want to get involved in. Yes, you can "sometimes" tell a true Meth Head by their gaunt drawn faces, bad rotten and worn down teeth from grinding them and pimples and sores, but not all the "cookers" actually use the stuff. Throw out all the stereotypes since you can't peg them all. Next, stay off of anyone's property that hasn't given you Personal permission to hunt on it. You should ask the local Sheriff or Police if it's dangerous or not to go up to someone's house if you're not sure or honk on your way up the drive to let them know you're coming if you're that brave or foolish to decide you want to take a chance. BLACK Panthers or mixed black and tan or solid or with rings or spots or underlying coloration are explained very well and their Melanistic color traits in this link in Wikipedia, if this will be accepted on this email. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Panther Panthers, that are about the size of our North American species that includes the names used interchangeably throughout portions of America as either Cougar, Mountain Lion or Puma. Black Panthers are indeed natives of South and Central America and also found in Mexico and in Asia they are called Jaguars. Yes, they may have wondered into any of the border states along the US-Mexican border or as has been mentioned belonged to some exotic breeder and have been released or escaped. Texas has many ranches and wildlife refugees and remember what happened in Ohio just a few months ago. There is always the possibility that it's just a Cougar-Puma-Mountain Lion and it looked "BLACK" at night to some of the locals or METH heads who probably can't see well anyhow with their pupils screwed up by drugs, but it doesn't really matter since a large CAT from any of the wild species and relatives of the Panther or Cougar family are large and will prey on smaller animals. In Florida the "Florida Panther" is more native to the Everglades and has become almost extinct as it is an endangered animal but its numbers have increased since the 1970s after almost being wiped out. The Bobcat is NOT at all a Panther and it's NOT a Cougar. A Bobcat, is just as the name implies, it has a "BOBBED Tail" as in a short stubby tail and is a much smaller animal in size and weight than a Black Panther or a Cougar-Puma-Mountain Lion and is about twice the size of an average house cat with tufted ears and ranges from Southern Canada to Northern Mexico. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobcat Look them all up on Google, MSN or Yahoo for photos of them. Happy hunting to all of those out in Texas or wherever you live and hoping you are safe and find many meteorites. To those that said be more careful around the druggies and Meth heads, and property owners, that is true, the Cougar or The Black Panther, or whatever kind of a large cat it is will most likely be more afraid of you than some Meth head looking for money or more drugs. Have a great evening. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

It is just convenient as mentioned not to have to open other screens and toggle when trying to understand some of the more intense posts, or to conveniently catch up on those ignored until the spirt move you to catch up. Still, the old practice of quoting what's relevant is sometimes lost and far more efficient for everyone I think, when possible, so at least I'll try to keep that in mind when participating in some of the whopper threads - also because the archives are probably getting near critical mass and may fragment into an alphabet soup nova. I don't understand the comment about the scrolling and batteries, though. At least on my phone, I can skip or delete messages once I am satisfied I've read as far as I want, without having to go to the end, I never get to the accumulated meteorite-list tags at the bottom and it's never a big deal (though I imagine if you get the daily compendium format it would be a major problem). Other consciencious gestures could include always putting new content at the top of the thread. One of my favorite people always puts their comments at the end and that usually throws me for a loop just as driving on the opposite sice of the road from convention. The other is for people that don't reference at all what they are talking about and there are orphan comments that leave one scratching their head and finally, another meteorite institution from San Diego who I greatly respect always starts his new threads out with a Re: Subject when he is replying to no previous Subject, so it cues me to think I'm entering it in mid thread ... kind of the concept some spammers use by sending you a thread "Re: invoice" making you think you are already involved in an email exchange with them if you have dozens to go through...and are short on time to think. [meteorite-list] LONG Posts that give us Arthritis to Scroll though
Hello all of you wonderful Meteorite Collectors and those lucky enough to be in Tucson this year, Just a quick request that many have been talking about lately. How about just a "Fresh email Post" without all the long trailing info of many old posts. Since many of us old timers and new folks read our Email on our phones and are short on time, battery life and Increasingly Bad Vision and those of us who are getting arthritis and want to avoid Carpo-Tunnel, can I please request when everyone sends a post that they leave out all the lengthy portions of many, many OLD previous email posts. It's very time consuming on us all and on our phone batteries and on our wrists and hands, back and shoulders and bodies in general all over to scroll through all the previous posts that many are including in their posts to the list. I'm seeing posts going back over 4 days or more that we don't need to read or scroll through regarding many things, especially the recent etching posts. Most of us understand etching, but when you have a post that includes the past 3-7 email posts no one is reading all the old posts since we've already read it and those that haven't seen them will catch up or can go into the archives to find them. Please, just a friendly request for a "Fresh Post" and perhaps one short connected previous email post, not the entire thread. This will make everyone much happier and cut down on time and battery life and our bodies. Thanks! ;-) __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Appraisal for Insurance?
Hi Folks, Most major insurance companies such as State Farm, Allstate or Progressive will simply tell you: "GET a Safety Deposit Box for your valuable collections." They won't insure or don't want to tackle something that is worth over a few thousand dollars. I checked into this 12 years ago when I started collecting meteorites, and also coins, stamps, jewelry, etc. If you really wanted your insurance company to cover anything over $3,000 they have to attach a Rider and you're paying out the Whaaazooo in premiums. The most common sense thing to do is go to your local Bank and get a safety deposit box that is large enough for all your most valuable collections, either Meteorites, coins, stamps, gold, silver, jewelry or whatever and you pay a yearly fee which would be cheaper by far than an insurance premium. Plus you're better covered by your bank from fire, theft, flood or anything that might happen in your home and you can always go and visit your things or bring some home for a while. It just doesn't make sense to pay HUGE premiums and risk something that is so hard to value, especially older historical meteorites that keep going up in value and items that just can't be replaced for their beauty such as jewelry and other collectables. Re: [meteorite-list] Looking to buy - Sudbury Impactite
Hi Mike, Well, my friend, you're about 6 years too late on my Sudbury Impactite. I had several large slabs of it and sold half, but it didn't go for enough and then one day I was transplanting one of 30 plants, I don't even remember which one it was now, and I needed something to put in the bottom for drainage. I didn't feel like going out to the True-value to get a clay pot to break up and had several 1-2" by 4-5" pieces of Sudbury Impactite around and just put them over the drainage hole. IF I knew which plant it was I would dump it upside down, but it must have been one of my 8 foot tall plants that weighs 250 pounds in a 2 foot x 2 foot pot. If I ever transplant them in the future and find them, I will certainly contact you. ;-) ) All the best. Re: [meteorite-list] A Meteorite fall site goes under the bulldozer-Hammer Stone! urgent
Hello Marc, Dirk and all, I agree with you that it's very sad that there may be no more meteorites found in this area and the developers don't give a damn about it, nor anyone apparently buying a property there. Maybe if someone builds a swimming pool they will discover a long buried piece and realize it's not a common rock. Home prices range from a very small home at an average $300,000.00 USD which is very common for Orange County to $10 Million dollar homes and ranchettes. It's not a community that cares about meteorites, being in southern Orange County, not far from the ocean and just north of San Diego County in Southern California. They are more focused on building homes than allowing anyone to search for meteorites, plus they won't take the insurance risk. Look up real estate prices at www.realtor.com and look under Wikipedia for general information about the city. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Juan_Capistrano,_California San Juan Capistrano is known for its cliff swallows. The protected birds are reputed to return from migration, traditionally originating in the town of Goya, Argentina, on St. Joseph's Day (March 19). The town is in heavily conservative and republican Orange County. They really don't care at all about meteorites, it's sad to say, but just about making money. Remember it's called "Orange" county, because it was once full of orange groves, which have disappeared over the years to build homes. Politics: In the state legislature San Juan Capistrano is located in the 38th Senate District, represented by Republican Mark Wyland, and in the 73rd Assembly District, represented by Republican Diane Harkey. Federally, San Juan Capistrano is located in California's 44th and 48th congressional districts, which have Cook PVIs of R +6 and R +8 respectively[3] and is represented by Republicans Ken Calvert and John Campbell respectively. As of the 2010 elections, the city council members are: Sam Allevato (Mayor), Laura Freese, Larry Kramer (Mayor Pro Tem), John Taylor, and Derek Reeve. This city also has four private, Christian, college prep schools named Capistrano Valley Christian Schools (Pre-K through 12th grade), Saddleback Valley Christian School (Pre-K through 12th grade), St. Margaret's Episcopal School (also Pre-K through 12th grade), and J. Serra Catholic High School (9th through 12th grade). The city also has two private kindergarten through eighth grade schools named Mission Parish School and Rancho Capistrano Christian School. Mission Parish School is located on the historic Mission grounds, utilizes some of the historic buildings as classrooms, and is situated next to Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano. The other is Rancho Capistrano Christian School, located off Highway 5 on the Crystal Cathedral's south campus. The campus at Rancho Capistrano is also host to meetings and conventions, as well as summer camps. Hope this gives those of you unfamiliar with Orange County some insight into why the city and the county aren't interested in meteorites, like we are. [meteorite-list] Rely on maps and weather conditions and local info, not always on GPS short routes
hi folks, I thought I'd post this story about a Canadian woman who was recently found by hunters on their snow mobiles who were themselves lost in the rough and treacherous mountains of Northern Nevada and her husband hasn't been found yet. They asked for the shortest route to Las Vegas from Canada and wound up in mountains they shouldn't have been in, since many people are out hiking or looking for rocks and meteorites out in the dry salt flats or dry lake beds and mountains. Just be careful, I know the majority of you are and you are smart, but some people new to the hobbies are relying too much on GPS gadgets that will get you lost and possibly worse if you don’t also use maps and local info. There was the story a few months ago about the woman who lived, but her 6 year old son died in Death Valley after using GPS to find the shortest route through Death Valley and used service roads and old mining roads and dirt trails and the dead bodies of a couple who were found recently who used used GPS back in 2009 in Death Valley and were lost and never found until searches found them almost 2 years later. Don't rely just on GPS, use the old fashioned way, A Map, that has updated road info and check weather conditions. I have used GPS and if you put in shortest route it will take you places you don't belong. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/20110511/ap_tr_ge/us_travel_brief_missing_canadian_couple All the best and happy hunting. Graham, Yinan, Shawn and list, I enjoyed Graham's response the best. "I can't say that mixing up all their pictures/samples really instills me with confidence in a bill of sale from Bonhams!" I'm with you Graham, and I hope they got the mix-up corrected before the auctions begin or some lucky winning bidder may not be too happy down the road. I've been waiting for a response from a certain 'cough-cough' auction house since December on an item I won for more information on provenance and have given up calling the person in charge. I agree with you Yinan and you are correct that it up to the seller of the item if they want their name put down in any catalogue or online or given out at all. It's a privacy issue and many are reluctant to allow that information to be given out to the public, even to the buyer. Many people get a thrill at seeing their name in print as being the person who owned the item, but many do prefer to remain anonymous and for various reasons. Re: [meteorite-list] Hypothetical launch question
Bill, I have a feeling that since you stated the man said it bounced off his roof, but you didn't say if he actually saw it hit his roof and bounce off or if he heard it hit and found it on the ground or if he just came out in the yard and found it laying there makes me think that either some neighborhood kid threw it on the roof or perhaps he threw it himself and is just telling you it bounced as part of his "Big Story" so that it sounds more legitimate that he really has a meteorite. As far as anyone knows he could have gone up on a ladder and dropped it onto the roof. The visions of fame and fortune and being on TV or in the paper seem to be making everyone find a meteorite in their yard these days. Even if it is a meteorite, which would be wonderful for him and I'd be very happy for him, there seem to be more and more stories of people finding meteorites in their own yard and none in the neighbors yard or surrounding area. This makes me think that some people are finding meteorites on someone else's private property or public property or BLM land, etc. and bringing them home and sticking them down in the dirt like they were hiding Easter eggs and claiming they have an amazing new meteorite that they just happened to have found after getting "meteorite fever." I hope you can help him get it tested and that it is a meteorite, but I wouldn't hold my breathe on this one. One good thing you made the effort Bill to help him and took the time to drive over there and check it out. It's kind of your good deed of the day that you did for mankind. All the best. It did quite a bit of damage to his roof and ceiling but it didn't penetrate the old roof. I was especially disappointed to see "The American Scientist" carrying the story with the first threw paragraphs and then when you click on "see more" it goes to the NYT website with the entire story and photos. I'm saddened that the American Scientist apparently didn't do any legwork to review the story or do any of their own research before blindly posting it. I'm guessing it doesn't take much anymore to call yourself a scientist in America or the world. I'm sure Ben Franklin, Thomas Alva Edison and Albert Einstein must be rolling over in their graves now. It's a pity that there aren't more responsible journalist out there. I fear as Adam Hupe and others have mentioned that the damage is done. This almost surreal smear campaign has taken on a life of its own and I'm still curious as to why the writer Mr. Broad with the NYT decided to chose his words so vehemently as to sound to critical and to apparently not give much thought as to the sensationalism of how be constructed the article nor to the outcome and repercussions of what would come to the meteorite community. Dirk and list, I think our best Media Face at this time certainly seems to be Geoff and Steve. Steve and Geoff do you think your producers would be able to fit a segment into your next show that deals with this perception of the Meteorite Community or even just a quick spot that states this is a legitimate hobby and that we are hard working honest people that love meteorites or something outstanding that would help to turn what this article had done into a positive view of us. I don't think this can wait much longer and needs to be addressed immediately. It would be a shame for this negative image to be spread out there in the world and that we're more than helpful in this hobby in assisting the scientific community and I think the sooner it's dealt with and squashed the better. My fear is that if we don't do something that bad stories and rumors will fly. If you guys are able to possibly even just add on a 30 second spot at the beginning or end of any of your reruns that it would help you guys and help all of us greatly. We definitely need good publicity and I don't want to put you guys on the spot and I know it's a lot to ask but if you could get your producers and the network to work something in I definitely feel that in the long run it would be great publicity for your show and would make sure you keep the viewers you have and hopefully bring in new viewers. I'm not standing up for him and this horribly written article so please no vicious emails, but just stating that he doesn't know anymore about meteorites than a 5 year old does about how to launch the Spacelab. It would be nice for him to write with an apology and corrections to his article, but I can't hold my breathe that long. I'm too old to wait for it and I'll probably be in my grave before that day comes. I feel the best way to handle this is to contact his editor or in the best case scenario the Editor in Chief to ask for a correction. The damage has unfortunately been done and we can't change what has already been so poorly written. All my best to all of you! Have a great day and may a meteorite land in your yard. Re: [meteorite-list] NYT story
Professor Agee, Thank you very much for coming onto the list and explaining your side of the story regarding your interview with the author of the story in the NYT. I certainly enjoyed reading your side of what you went through in the interview and it gave myself and I'm sure hundreds of others that read your post a better understanding of what the writer was interested in and that it seems to me that the author wasn't as interested in the facts that you gave him, but more in a sensationalistic story for Section D in Tuesday's paper. Thank you again for clarifying the misunderstandings that so many of us collectors had that love meteorites who were dumbfounded by the razor sharp barbs the writer used to lash out at our hobby and livelihood. Have a great day! Brian Cox Message: 3 Date: Tue, 5 Apr 2011 09:28:10 -0600 From: Carl Agee Subject: [meteorite-list] NYT story To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252 Since I am quoted in this article, here?s my reaction to it. The reporter seems very confused, in that he lumps together a story about the Gebel Kamil crater in Egypt and the legal meteorite trade (NWA) based primarily in Morocco. During the interview with him I spent a fair amount of time trying to explain to him how beneficial the NWA?s have been for planetary science research. For example, I mentioned how the number of rare Angrite meteorites has more than doubled due to African finds ? a huge enhancement to our understanding of the early solar system, and of course I mentioned all the lunars and martians, and other rare classes. I told him that I was not terribly well informed about the Gebel Kamil crater situation, but in my opinion the highest priority would be to protect the impact structure from degradation as these are quite rare on Earth. I also told him, that the Gebel Kamil meteorites on the other hand, are probably not hard to come by, and I?m sure if I wanted to study one for research, I could get a sample at a reasonable price or even get one as a donation from a collector, which museums benefit from frequently. I did get the feeling that he was hoping to hear something negative from me. As such he ended the interview rather quickly, but said something like ?oh, the NWA meteorites sounds like an interesting story, I need to come back to that at a later time?. So of course I was disappointed to see what mess the final NYT version was. -- Carl B. Carl, If you feel you need to defend his behavior that is your business. I don't think he's having just a bad day, he's had a bad night last night attacking Steve, again and again for something like the 3rd year in a row and also Jason. There was no need for his crazy and yes, insane comments to David either. I personally don't care if he's a brilliant scientist, that's no excuse for his speaking to David, and referring to David as being an imposter and really being Stevee. He has done that to other people claiming they aren't who they say they are and that they're pretending to be someone else. He has done that several times and that is just plain crazy. If you're insinuating that he's having a bad day because he's having some problem then he shouldn't be posting at all. You keep your opinion and I'll keep mine. Hi Bill, I'm sure you'll do just fine when you meet to inspect the meteorite. You've had enough experience with it since it fell in 2003 and I'm sure you have specimens of Park Forest. Take them with you if you're suspicious to compare them to this new specimen, but, I really and honestly want you to take at least 2 people with you if you go over to their house or meet them someplace. Also, only meet them in a place with plenty of people around and not some dark area or out in the boonies along a road or something. It not only could be a hoax with a rock from a local gravel pit or quarry, but it may be a set up and they may intend to rob you since they'll think that you're bringing tens of thousands of dollars along. Just be careful and if it's real, then either do a Cashier's check and have them meet you at the bank where there are security cameras or do Paypal and make sure you have it in hand before you send the money though. I did indeed do analysis work on three different pieces of the same stuff for these people at the Tucson show. The results were given, as shown, as simply written on the back of my card. HOWEVER, these jerks ADDED the Ni next to the Fe to what I had written and claimed that the number represented the combination of Fe and Ni. There was NO nickel what so ever in any of the three samples. I told them several times point blank that they DO NOT HAVE A METEORITE. What they had was a quite titanium rich magnetite. I also told them (as a consolation of sorts) that, if there was enough of this stuff where they found it, they may have the makings of a titanium mine. I guess this is a serious blow to my model of offering analysis of specimens for the public. It seems that there is no way I can stop these delusional idiots from misrepresenting or outright falsifying the data I give them (as these people did). I may have to reconsider my plans for offering this service (or how I handle delivering the data at the very least). Hi list, I'm sure if there has been anything found that the guys are keeping quiet about it for now. I wouldn't be telling the world, certainly not the news until they've got the area mapped out and found a good sum of specimens. The area is probably more remote than Mifflin, Wisconsin and far less populated than Park Forest, Illinois. I'm sure the guys don't want the Tulsa or Oklahoma City news people out there. Also, I certainly wouldn't depend on the news to get my "news" of a meteorite fall, most of them have no idea what a meteorite looks like or where it's from unless they watch Meteorite Men or follow the hobby. Most of them are too busy chasing other stories to get their face on TV and worrying about their appearance and advancing their careers. ;-) Remember every fall from Park Forest to Mifflin took the news at least a day or two to even report it and even then they all acted like it was unbelievable like an alien sighting, until someone from a major museum or university or a Meteorite Hunter verified the information. All the best to those out there in the fields. Let us know when you can what type you think it is and send photos when possible. thanks for keeping in touch. Re: [meteorite-list] Ethics question?
Richard, Bill, Barrett and List, Personally if a meteorite were glued together I'd want to know, but I'm positive I could tell it were glued together. Now, to be honest with you, unless the person was an expert at gluing meteorites, I'm sure most people could tell it was glued, I would think. If you had a great deal of experience at gluing Native American or Pre-Columbian artifacts and or stone or metal objects together most people could tell that also, and in any case you should always advise someone it's glued if you were selling it. I would think most people selling their meteorites at that point would sell them separately and they would probably make more money selling the separate pieces than as a whole. As you know every year the specimens are getting smaller and smaller, and then you're down to micro-mounts and dust. I recently bought a decent crumb, about 144 mg of New Concord that I can see and a 19 mg Weston, which is just too small honestly for me, and I'd rather have a 1 gram piece but none were available. We all know dealers buy meteorites and break them down to smaller and smaller specimens and they make more money per specimen that way, since it's more money per mg or gram. This is also helpful to beginners or those not wanting to spend a great deal of money and for those who want to have a specific meteorite in their collection and the small specimens do allow this. I recently bought eleven very nice meteorites ( 9 separate names) and there were 2 pieces of Agoult that fit together that were sold separately, a 1.6 gm and 1 gram piece. I was happy with them, and the seller made more money probably than if they hadn't been broken and sold as a 2.6 gram specimen. I also bought his 2 Bruderheim pieces, a 9.7 gm and a 1.0 gm piece that fit together like a puzzle. I'm happy, and they look nice, and if I sell them I'll probably sell them separately too since again if they broke accidentally or were broken to sell separately and to make more money, either way is fine. I bought them and someone else will also. Honesty is the best policy. Take care and may a large Lunar or Martian Meteorite fall into your yard today. Re: [meteorite-list] Valera affidavit and 1cm cubes
Hi all about Valera, and Greg about the 1cm cubes, Yes, Google is the best to look for anything these days. I was looking Valera up and then saw Shawn's post with it. Believe me, google saves everything searched, that's why if you google your name or your web site or any user ID you've ever had, it's on google. Kind of an invasion of privacy I think, but that's the world we live in. Greg, I have some of the cubes, but unfortunately these don't have the 1cm on them. I'd rather have those too! They are Drake Damerau cubes and are made from 6061T6 aluminum, and anodized to a military grade spec. The letters are filled in with baked enamel. He told me last year that he saw the one he sold Steve Arnold on “Meteor Hunters” one day last Spring 2010. He thought it was the “Tucson Meteorite” episode. They showed a picture of his find next to one of his cubes. You can always tell it’s a “Drake Cube” when you see the dot next to the N. All other cubes made have a small line next to the N, not the dot. I'll send you a photo of mine, and you can always write Drake if you want. I just wrote him a few minutes ago to ask him if he has made any with the 1cm on them. P.S. is anyone else noticing so many of the posts being incredibly long. I think maybe some are replying from the list email instead of a separate new email which is what we should use. It's pure hell trying to read these on a cell phone when you have to scroll through the whole list of 20 posts and some with the entire previous 20 posts attached under their one post. Always send a new email page with the subject and attach the post you are talking about if you want. It's much easier on all then to have the entire list of all posts to scroll down through. [meteorite-list] IMCA] RE- Customs holding packages
Thanks Jeff, What the heck should we use? Now, after you pointed this out, I don't want to use any HC-Harmonized Code. I do remember that code 7103 and 7102 from before and now I think about it, I actually didn't use it since I was afraid it would get someone's attention who might want to steal gemstones or in the case of 7102 ,which is for any kind of diamonds, rough, unworked or simply sawn, etc. If you look under http://hts.usitc.gov/Table%2025.xml it gives you every kind of other rock, asbestos, sandstone, cement etc., but nothing really that seems perfect for meteorites. I looked up the 7102 on the http://hts.usitc.gov and it gave 20 categories, all of the rough diamond listings below. I don't think we should use those either, since someone might think they're rough diamonds and turn into a mole and swallow them at the shipping company or the Customs Department. If they swallow Murchison they might turn into a Super Human or an Alien. ;-) Thanks, Brian Cox Search Results 20 Results Returned 7102 Diamonds, whether or not worked, but not mounted or set: 7102.10. [meteorite-list] [IMCA] RE- Customs holding packages
Brian Schroeder, Warren and all you other blokes!! ;-) Brian, Thanks for sharing the info about the " NATURAL MINERAL SPECIMEN HC # 7103.10.00.00 " Harmonized code. I remember you telling us about this a couple of years ago or maybe longer, and when you mentioned that you'd been working in shipping it rang a bell. Thanks again for this code. I've now saved a file and printed it for future use. It's very much appreciated by me and all the others I'm sure. Warren and Gary, on the issue of you at first hand printing the customs form, which I normally have done in the past and then changing to the ebay printed format, did the printed ebay format have some errors on it or is it just too difficult for customs agents or shipping agents to understand? I gathered that there was something wrong with the ebay new format on their form, but you didn't mention exactly what it was or perhaps my old brain being filled with useless info could not decipher what you said. Let us all know. Hope things work out, and yes, I'm sure the Brits and everyone will be much happier with you. It has amazed me over the past few years that where a few years ago so many meteorites sold by U.S. collectors were only being sold to other U.S. dealers and collectors to now where there is much more of an international group that is buying from the U.S. We're not only all over the universe out in space, but International as well ;-) Have a wonderful, happy and safe day filled with cloud free skys and may a meteorite land in your yard today! Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] customs holding packages
Warren, this VAT-Value Added Tax has been a big discussion and a pain in the EU-European Union for the past few months, especially heavily discussed since Europeans and people in other countries are complaining more about it. Things were bad enough shipping to Italy and their pony express method of delivering snail mail, and thus now most sellers on ebay won't ship to Italy and most shippers from everywhere in the world don't want to ship to Italy because it's so slow there, but now you have this added VAT and it's a real pain. Many ebay sellers as you know state in the auctions they won't ship to Italy and now I'm seeing many more not shipping to Mexico. I gave up on DHL 5 years ago since I would order products from St Martin/St Marteen and they always went to their god awful headquarters along the Kentucky/Ohio border. Twice they opened the package and then DHL charged me between $65-$100 because Bubba and his cousin Larry and his brother Larry and his other brother Larry didn't like something comin' from no gosh dang country that had a French flag flyin' from it, since them frogs didn't help the U.S. of A. fight in Iraq and Bubba and the Larrys wouldn't eat none of them dang French fries. You get my drift and you know my sense of humor. Yes, folks in France and those that don't know me, I am making a joke about how people talk and act along the Ohio River area of Cincinnati, Ohio where DHL has its large hub, but it's true. I think they really didn't like that island or St. Barts since they have been rumored to stop packages written in French at the DHL hub. I gave up buying from St. Martin and just bought from the warehouses or stores in the U.S. that carried their products. Your best bet is, as has always been done, "Mineral for research" $5. Re: [meteorite-list] Auction Policies
I agree with Tracy and Michael regarding announcing the absentee bids during the auction, that absentee bids should NEVER be announced. Falling Fusion asked it as a neutral question for anyone to answer pro or con, but those watching through the live stream and those in the room have all mentioned they didn't think it was right to announce those amounts. I was watching via the online feed and everyone was able to post comments real time in the chat area to the right of the streaming video. There were a LOT of "Unhappy People" who had put in absentee bids and were upset that they were announced before the auction commenced. I've bid through several live online Auction Houses such as Heritage Auction House and if they ever gave out the absentee bids or any Houses such as Christie's or Sotheby's ever gave out absentee bid amounts and announced those before an auction, they'd all be bankrupt with lawsuits. Let's make sure next year that those "PRIVATE" absentee bid amounts, are indeed kept "PRIVATE!" Have a great day! Re: [meteorite-list] Apollo Moon rock sample on eBay?
p.s.s. I need to correct my previous statement about the refunds on eBay. I just called eBay and was told if an item is $50 or less, the eBay rep said they will pay the buyer the amount and let them keep the item, just to avoid time and hassles. This means eBay is footing the amount, and it doesn't come out of the seller's account. So, basically as per the eBay rep, anything over $50 they still require it sent back and then when proof is given by the buyer such as a Post Office confirmation, then the refund is given. Now, I do want to make a statement here on behalf of the seller I know and several others who are into the 15,000 to 30,000 range, that often they will get a package back, and it contains "ROCKS" or other "JUNK" and they have not been able to prove to eBay/PayPal that the buyer didn't send the item back since it's based on a confirmation or shipping number. Now, also, two of these friends will take a box returned by a seller directly to the Post Office and open it there at the window in front of a Post Office employee so they have a witness and I believe they may also then be able to file a complaint with the Post Office. Just wanted to clear that since Carl alerted me to my statement about no returns and I wanted to clarify that. Sorry, folks, on the Apollo Moon rock, I meant to also say that perhaps he's selling it for someone else, which seems to be common these days and he has no idea of the rules and regulations of Not owning or Not selling a NASA moon rock. Also, he may have been conned into buying it and believes it's a true moon rock and has no idea about any laws, and thinks it's legist. Re: [meteorite-list] Apollo Moon rock sample on eBay?
Has anyone contacted the seller with the Apollo Moon Rock or if they have did they get a response back from him? I would think that since he has 100% feedback and has 4.8 out of 5 on "Item as Described" and 4.9 of 5 on Communication, Shipping Time and Shipping and handling charges that he might honestly think he as a REAL Moon Rock, plus he's got 989 feedback in just 2 years. That Purple 70s Carpet he has it photographed on is a sight for a 70s flashback movie, but I think he needs some direction. If he had 15 feedbacks and was selling really crazy off the wall stuff I would think he was a con artist, but just might need some help and direction in this case. One other thing that bothers me about anything sold for a high price is the ebay/paypal rule on refunds, without returns, that so many of my seller friends are complaining about. Many I know that don't sell meteorites complain that the ebay/Paypal refund policy is if the buyer contacts Paypal and even says the "item was not exactly as described" even if it's a minor scratch, etc., that Paypal will refund their money and let the buyer keep the item and not return it like they used to do a year or so ago and in the past. Sellers are really getting screwed in this case. I know people that will only sell any item over $2,000 on their website or some other way. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite the floats??
Yes, Martin and Murray you are right that ebay may try to regulate meteorite selling too much and to extremes. I do agree with a simple tweaking of their categories as you both mentioned, and as I mentioned I was just going with the flow on this and making suggestions on the moment and wasn't casting them in stone, but just throwing them out there. This of course would need a great deal of input and tweaking to make it work and to finalize it, but of course someone must first start with ebay to even get them half way interested in the idea since they don't normally pay much attention to buyers or sellers. It would take some pressure to get them to sit down and listen to our ideas for improvements since they enjoy having panels of employees brain storm and get overpaid for most of their suggestions and changes. They do however sometimes bring in sellers and buyers for ideas and with the big time sellers in the meteorite field I think they might possibly take some suggestions if they were bombarded with suggestions so to speak with cleaning up their meteorite search. I also dislike weeding through 5,000 meteorite auctions that include make-up, watches and other things that have meteorite in the name. I remember 10 years ago when I first started collecting in 2000 when on ebay you typed in meteorite and it came up with between 500-800 as a total and that even included that crazy meteorite brand make-up and I don't think there were any watches in 2000. Ah yes, times they have changed. Have a great evening everyone. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite the floats??
Just to piggyback on what I mentioned earlier about anyone interested enough, who has the time and the energy, (Not me!) to contact ebay about setting up categories for meteorites, I did want to mention the old saying: "Be Careful What You Wish For" since it "May Open a Can of Worms" in the sense, that we may be categorized to death on something like that. Now, not to leave out my Aussie friends, "Jeff" let's say it's a Miles Meteorite, which has been one of my favorites. It's beautiful and I had quite a bit of it and sold most of it. Some of you lucky blokes and lasses may have gotten a piece of it. So, for example, if ebay says: If it's an Australia meteorite you have to put which territory it was found in. So, in that case we either put Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia and throw Tasmania in there also for where the meteorite was found or fell and picked up, etc. you know what I mean. Then for Miles it would be put into the Queensland category where it was found. Now, what if the meteorite was found on the border of 2 or 3 of the areas, then you would put it in each of those. Now, for example in the America, it could get quite sticky. What if ebay says you have to fill out your seller's form with the correct state. Ok, that sounds great actually. Then what if they say, ok put the county in also. Then we might have overlapping counties, such as the Mifflin meteorite in Southwestern Wisconsin, which was found with pieces in Grant County near Livingston and then across into Iowa County to Mifflin and the surrounding area. So in this case you have two counties you need to fill out for your ebay sale for the Mifflin meteorite. We then in the future may be filling out the ebay auction as Mifflin meteorite, a witnessed fall going across the sky, and since it hit a farmer's shed and bounced and he picked it up, then it's under the fall category and all other Mifflin meteorites would be under "fall" and not the "Found" category. It would be put in the state of Wisconsin in Grant and Iowa counties. It would be put in the year 2009 and then who knows ebay might want the month and day also. I'm just breaking this down for you folks. So, if meteorite faker # 1 and faker # 2, and faker # 3 all say they have a meteorite to sell, like the guy in Nevada then he's got to put it into a category of let's say a "find" and let's say Clark County, in the state of Nevada. Now as far as category for iron, stony iron, chondrite or pallasite, etc. then since old faker # 1 has no idea what kind of a meteorite it is, then he couldn't fill that out, unless ebay puts in a category called, "Unknown" ah yes, the mysterious gray area of unknown. Anyhow, I have to get off the computer and do some shopping, so you folks can play around with this idea to crack down on the fakers on ebay and in general rid the world of dishonest meteorite buyers in your free time. On your way to the rescue all your Meteorite Super Heroes!!! I need my Starbucks Mocha decaf!!! Have a great day, and a great evening to those in the Eastern Hemisphere. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite the floats??
I'm sure everyone that has looked at the "Amazing floating meteorite" auction has also looked at his other items up for sale. With only 3 feedbacks he's not going to get many positive feedbacks with his prices this high, for soap stone carvings starting around $500 and a gold 2 1/2 dollar coin starting at $2,000, which he found in the Yuba River in N. California, plus the eagle head knife which he found also in the Yuba River. I imagine he's a camper/hiker or has a cabin up there and most likely prospects for gold since I'm only guessing, but he has an old time scale on the table behind him in the gold coin photo. I blew up the photo of the gold coin and I was trying to make out what his wedding band said, but either it's a design, or just chipped pretty badly. I thought it might be a Native American design, but it's not one that I've never seen before. The sad thing is that at the end of all his auctions ebay gives the links to other auctions in that category as part of their search for the most watched and of course the coin gives other seller's coins, the knife gives other seller's knives, and the meteorite gives other meteorites auctions and although this is good for other sellers it kind of ties all sellers in with this guy. As others have mentioned ebay is making money, and probably has no clue, and believe me I've called them in the past and when you say "Meteorites" all they say is "Really? wow, that's cool!" or "that's interesting" or "that's a different category I haven't had before" and there are no experts at ebay on much of anything. They are just your typical underpaid customer service reps just getting by with what barely above minimum wage amount ebay is paying. Now, there is a thought that came to me, but it may not be popular, but I am just mentioning it, so don't anyone jump all over me, since I'm not about to argue or debate it with anyone, since I highly doubt ebay will even do it, at least in the near future, but if anyone wants to propose it to ebay then grab it and run with it to them. As with most large scale collecting fields they have various different categories. Let's say coins, you have to put your coins into the different categories of U.S. coins, Foreign coins and then I think maybe even different countries, but I'm not going to check all this now since I'm using it as an example and what I remember. You have either circulated or uncirculated, Proof coins, paper currency, tokens, commemorative coins, and then on and on and then the various years of coins, say from 1760-1820, 1940-1970, etc. again, I'm just guessing since I'm not going to spend 20 minutes going through ebay to prove this to anyone, just look for yourselves. There are categories for stamps, Barbie Dolls, Hot Wheels for example 1968-1972 or something like that and 2000 to present, etc. again, just going by memory. So, my point is that if ebay actually were to try to put meteorites into categories, much more than just what they have today as in tektites and meteorites, etc. then we would all be looking for meteorites from perhaps, and remember this is just an example that I'm going with the flow here. U.S. meteorites, Russian meteorites, Moroccan meteorites, Canadian meteorites, French meteorites, etc. (don't anyone feel left out now if I didn't put your country in ;-) ) and then got really crazy and started categories for falls and finds and then with or without chondrules or iron or stony irons or pallasites or desert glass, etc. I think you all get my drift, then they could always say, ok, you have to prove that this meteorite is over 1 year old, or 100 years old or 1 billion years old etc. and then they could also say category for under 1 gram, 1-5 grams 6-10 grams. I can go on forever with this, so, again, no criticizing me, since I'm just playing with this. Anyhow, my point is, that some of these categories may be good since it could honestly cut down on the clowns putting stuff up, and make it easier for buyers to find meteorites or related meteorite items, etc, but then again it's going to be something that sellers most likely may not like, but then again they might. Everyone have a wonderful day and enjoy it and life in general. All the best to you "Good" meteorites folks all around the world and the universe too. Oh, and yes, can't leave out the Aliens. Hi Chris, I tried to get in touch with Scott a couple of years ago and my emails came back also. I had bought a few thousand dollars worth of meteorites back 6-7 years ago and wanted to check with him if he had a certain meteorite I was looking for. He always had fair prices and a great selection. What was odd was that some of the meteorites I'd bought from him, were still pictured on his website with the price I paid from 6 years ago. I thought that was odd he didn't update the site, but thought he must have gotten busy and completely left collecting and selling. Someone even wrote me about a meteorite I'd sold them which I'd given them the COA from Scott and asked if it was the same meteorite on Scott's website. I checked and sure enough it was there. I am not sure what happened to him, but think someone on the list had said he had stopped collecting, but that is all I know about him. Seems he kind of vanished off the face of the earth. I hope he is well and that his family is well also. Just as long as we don't hear he was abducted by aliens and was beamed up and has been missing for all this time. Re: [meteorite-list] Mars Odyssey THEMIS Images: ET?
Darren and James, With all due respect, and I'm not picking sides here or trying to get in between either of you nor to correct anyone, but the article that Darren quoted from on books sales is an article by Robyn Jackson, from Copyright 2003 Seven years ago. I thought the facts were rather odd and out of date, since no one listens to 3 hours of radio anymore, not even old me with my oldies, since everyone is on their ipod. If I see someone with a CD player attached to their arm it's only because they're running along the lake, and most have switched to ipods, and most people barely watch 4 hours of TV anymore. It didn't give any stats on computer use since 7 years ago not everyone had one. The article from University of Dayton: Erma Bombeck's Writer's Workshop, is sorely outdated, since Erma, rest her soul has been "Dead" since April 22, 1996. I'm sure the book stats have changed, but with the computer and internet, which that ancient 2003 article Didn't even mention is where most people get their news these days (I haven't bought a newspaper in two years) and people read more online or with their kindle or their ipad than a real book. Then Darren's point is valid that books just don't sell like they used to unless someone is lying on a beach on vacation or takes one into a restaurant or coffee shop or on the train or bus going to work. Believe me, I live in downtown Chicago and I get a warm soft spot in my heart when I actually see someone with a book going to work or someplace. I love the smell of a book, nothing like that, brings back grade school, simpler times I guess. Everyone else is on their iphone or Crackberry reading, texting and web surfing. Don't feel bad Darren, you were making a good point, and James, don't give up, there are ebooks and you may try that route with your book through an online publisher. I wish you both the best. I'm sure he's out in the Cosmos enjoying a close-up view of amazing Asteroids. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Wisconsin----The next Sahara, the NEW NWA, forget Australia
On a light-hearted note, to those that know me, I have a keen sense of humor and a happy personality, unless someone is rude or acts ignorant towards me. Regarding the recent talk of the Sahara drying up for meteorites and being hunted/mined out and that Australia is the new Sahara. I think Wisconsin will be the new area to find Meteorites..at this rate if there is verification of this new fall. Don't worry, be happy folks! ;-) Brian __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Janesville, Wisconsin Meteorite Monday May 10, 2010
Here's another article on the May 10, 2010 possible meteorite..this from the Milwaukee paper online... several posts here, one guy I recognize...;-) Of course, the fist post, on the bottom, is from some religious Nut.who thinks it's "The End of Days" some people really need to get out more and stop watching the 700 channel and other greedy bible thumping televangelists. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Janesville, Wisconsin Meteorite Monday May 10, 2010
I may be late on this, just read it. Reports of another meteor, this time near Janesville, Wisconsin..near the Wisconsin/Illinois border. That's closer to me, Terry Boudreaux and Joe Kerchner and Chicago Steve Arnold than the Mifflin/Mineral Point, Wisconsin meteorite. Ok, Jana and John and Mike Farmer, Dave Schultz and everyone, head back to Chicago O'Hare. ;-) Come on boys, we've got a new meteorite to look for!! ye-haaa!!!;-) http://www.wrex.com/global/story.asp?s=12457592 __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] New position on hunting BLM lands
Hi Yinan, Thanks for refreshing my memory on the mining claim that the prospectors filed on the land. I was in high school and remember reading that they were not allowed to take the Old Woman meteorite as she sat in between the boulders on that rocky area because it was "not" a locatable mineral. That brings back memories and clarifies the reason that it went to the Smithsonian. Re: [meteorite-list] New position on hunting BLM lands
hi folks, Just a follow up on the hunting on BLM and National and State, County, City Parks, etc. Beware of hunting on military areas also. I'm sure all of us have common sense to not be walking around on Military Property and hunting for rocks, Native American artifacts or meteorites. Remember Area 51 and gunmen on the ridge, etc. Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Corps Base, Edwards Air Force Base, Vandenberg Air Force Base and Chocolate Mountain Gunnery Range in California. Oh, and China Lake Naval Weapons Center also, but I can't tell you about that one since it involves Aliens and things I still don't remember, nor care to remember or relive. ;-) Nellis Air Force Base Bombing and Gunnery Range in Nevada and Test Site and you know where the others are in your states. It would be unwise to go into any type of restricted or military area to hunt for anything without receiving special permission and most preferably have it documented on paper for your own hassle free safety. Just some wise words to protect yourselves while out hunting in the deserts and wild open spaces. Re: [meteorite-list] New position on hunting BLM lands
I'm enjoying the information you fine collectors are putting on here as I learn something new everyday. I thought I'd toss my two cents in there as an f.y.i. An acquaintance who has a mining claim on BLM is not able to mine the claim now that the entire area in California has been practically sealed off and the local sheriffs and BLM personnel won't allow anyone onto it. There were first concerns of people dumping their old rehabbing projects from homes being rehabbed (Imagine that, someone dumping on BLM land) and the dangers of asbestos. Then, environmental groups, which I generally always support were questioning the safety of the water table and the native salamanders and various native plant species. The bottom line is that the BLM decided with all this going on that the easiest way was to close it down entirely, no more dumping of possible asbestos materials and no danger to the native flora and fauna. My guess is that similar situations will be occurring throughout the West, if they have not already been put into place or are in the works. Have a great day! Re: [meteorite-list] Opinions on this... whatever it is
It looks like the rocks I saw while visiting the plant Zeurtron back in 1587. They often piled them up in their yards and took crystals and placed them on top. Spheres were also popular since they sat well in the thumbprints on top. Of course the people of Zeurtron had much bigger specimens of these. The Zeurtrons were closer to Venus and Neptune and often gathered artifacts from those ancient civilizations that were worshipped long ago by other cultures. I did see many of the cultures represented from the Earth from Old Europe and their paranoid objects represented there. I believe the Zeurtrons used to fly to Earth on weekend get-a-ways to have a good time and scare the earthlings and make them even more paranoid then they were in the 13th and 14th centuries and the objects they worshipped, much like the Earthlings are now. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] BE CAREFUL OF RUMORS WITH WISCONSIN STONES.. Also Watch Out Meeting People Alone.
Hi Michael and list, You gave good advice about not meeting any strangers wanting to meet to look at their supposed meteorites. I was afraid some con men and women would make it out there and possibly try to rob someone. I hope it doesn't happen, but you are right. Be careful, since you are out in the middle of farmland and stay in your car if anyone does want to meet even if you are with someone and be ready to drive off and burn rubber. p.s. I can smell the ozone in the air, not that it couldn't be air pollution here in Chicago, but the clouds are moving in and there's rain and storms northwest of town, just in case anyone is going to O'Hare. Take care, better hunting tomorrow for you folks, it should clear up and be sunny and in the 60s by noon. all the best, Brian __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Wisconsin high winds and possible heavy thunderstorms tonight
Greg and list, Thanks for the tornado update. I was afraid that was going to happen since the Weather Channel gave Wisconsin a 4 out of 10 chance that tornados would be in the area. Best to all, hopefully no tornados, but be ready to go underground in the hotel basement. Joe, My heart sank and my chest felt heavy after reading your very honest post on selling "Your Meteorite" to take care of your kids and yourself and needs. Honestly, if I had the cash I'd give you $20k for the whole thing. You have honestly made me feel very humble and human after reading your post. I'm glad you found it since if I'd been out there with you hunting and found it I'd probably have wanted to have pulled off a "oops I tripped and fell and holler at your kids to come help the Cool Older White haired Dude up out of the cow pie and hoped they would have seen it laying there and I would have let them have it. I wish you the best of happiness, peace, and joy and keep that warm heart open. I'm getting a little teared up here. You sell the Kerchner meteorite and do what you need to do with the money. Re: [meteorite-list] The Wonder Of Meteorites
Hi, Jeff Kuyken, Your video rocks!! I think it's great, played it about 7 times. It's wonderful, amazing, beautiful and a magnificent presentation of how asteroids are formed and the photos and video footage of meteorites found on earth and the science related to meteorites and asteroids. This should be Basic 101 for any Science class and meteorite study ...in any class. It's Excellent and I'm an old dog and not much impresses me anymore.
