Carl, No disrespect to you but it’s beside the point on why I didn’t like
these meteorites. I can't tell you what you should or shouldn’t like. I was
offered unconditional refund and I feel that some meteorites didn't meet my
expectation. Think about it - Why would Stefan and Martin not take these
back (as per their obligation and terms of sale) if these meteorites were
really that great. Are they afraid that there may not be another sucker for
 these not so wonderful meteorites.

There is no justification for committing fraud which is to offer the terms
of sale with no intention of honoring them.

Hi Mike and Robert,

Glad you guys are safely back and thank you for letting us know the story in
Oman. Something is a bit puzzling. I had read another post not to long ago here
that mentioned there was $250,000 to get you back into Oman(?). Not sure if
that was a bounty or some kind of reward. The one who made that post did not
accept that deal but that is a large sum and seemed with that kind of money for
you, you were allowed to leave so relatively easily. I would think that once
they got you, they would lock you up and throw away the key. Sorry if I don't
have my facts straight or if it opens any wounds.

I also thought that it was a stroke of genius of you to say the camera, Ipod,
gps,..etc. was not for mining. I would have stammered and gave up hope.:) As
much as those meteorites you lost were valuable, it's nothing compared to your
health. I also found it strange if the Omani police thought those meteorites
were such a national treasure they would just treat them like so much garbage.

2010-10-14 Thread Carl 's

Hi All,

Nuts! I can't believe all this talk about divining rods lately. So, I made
myself a pair from wire clothes hanger, following Warren's instructions and
went out to my side yard. My front and back yard are compeltely cemented over.
I made it out about 3 feet and the rods crossed over. WTH!! I doubled back and
they crossed over at the same spot! I walked over the entire yard and came back
at the same spot. Yep, they crossed over! I can't wait till my sons come home
so they repeat this experiment.

Carl2

Warren wrote:

While I agree with you , I must do so with a small grain of salt.
I nearly quoted your previous email statement to my father regarding divining
rods .
He smiled at me, went inside and brought out 2 coat hangers. He cut them and
produced two straightened pieces of wire. He then bent them both the same way,
nearly at a 90 degree angle with one end longer than the other. He then held
the short ends, one in each and hand, loosely out in front of him. He walked
across the lawn over a buried water pipe and the two wires went from pointing
forward to crossing each other. They crossed exactly when he walked over the
pipe and then uncrossed when he was past it.
I didn't believe any of it, so he handed them to me. Like a fool ( I felt like
one, holding two pieces of wire walking around), I took them and repeated what
he had done. Damned if they didn't cross exactly the same way. I could back up
slowly and they would move slowly at the same time, crossing when over the pipe.
I took this situation to school. A professor listened and proposed we try some
tests. All in all

Some of this might be old hat to most on the list but might be interesting to
the newer members here. Nonetheless, this is still pretty good reading material.

Re: [meteorite-list] Venusian meteorites

2010-09-10 Thread Carl 's

Hi Mike, Chris and list,

I've often wondered the same thing. Were there any studies on matching the
Venusian atmosphere to some ungrouped achondrites or other meteorites, similar
to gases trapped in Martian meteorites to it's atmosphere?

Thanks! Carl2

All of the confirmed planetary meteorites we have seen (barring the
disputed Angrite-Mercury connection) come from planets further out
from the sun than Earth. So I am guessing that maybe the Sun's
gravitational influence would have more effect on a Venusian rock that
manages to escape that acidic and hellish world...

Hi,

Earlier today MikeG, Chris and I were kind of wondering about Venusian
meteorites. I looked back at the archives and found a bit of discussion already
between Sterling, Elton, Tracy, Howard, Mike F. and Mark F. on the subject.
This discussion was way back in 2003, before my time, but it seems the
questions are still out there. This interesting discussion may be worth another
look. See links to the archives here:

Hi Jesse,

Welcome to the List! I'm a newbie, too. The Campo was my first meteorite as
well. Canyon Diablo oxides just means they've rusted and either collected from
falling off of larger pieces or are just found that way. A lot of hard to find
iron meteorites are going to be oxides although CDs are relatively common. Have

Good morning All,

Thank you for your comments. Actually I do not own any thin sections. I was

like that I can view the subject on a computer screen before making the actual

create pics for my meteorite catalog. My biggest concern now is if I can
photograph larger subjects, like something around 3.5cm or larger? Would this,
at least, be able to focus if I can raise the camera up?

more I read it, but I'm not too sure how Jason fits into all this as I didn't

Of course I understand the importance of find documentation. That was my point

two of us here, you know. :) Three if you count Karl.:D Maybe four if you
include Carl the lurker. Lol! And, yes, I'm also glad of the NWA meteorites.

that. Thanks, Martin!

First of all, most desert meteorites and the most significant desert finds

Good Morning All,

Darren Garrison has pointed out to me that my novel idea of saving micros of
Lorton in a vacuum bag is not so novel afterall. I thought this was really
great and wanted to share this info with the other two members of this list who
didn't know about it like myself. Thanks again, Darren, and I hope you don't
mind me mentioning.

I had already thought some slogans to use in case this idea met some resistance:

4.567 billion years in space, FOREVER in a landfill.
Go green! Save our planet and meteorites! Yeah, I like the first one better.

Hi,

Just a thought I had the last week or so. Has anyone given the thought of
obtaining the vacuum cleaner bag used to clean the offices? It still might not
be too late and with the doctors permission, of course. Judging from the
photos, there may be little micros that may have been overlooked and vacuumed.
A dusty search but with a face mask, gloves and a strong magnet, who knows?

Hey Mike. Depends on how full the vacuum bags are originally. May take weeks
before they need replacing. For the price of a new bag, the doctors just might
let you have the old ones. Raises the level of meteorite hunting, doesn't it?
Anyone out in Virginia that might want to try it?

Carl

 Hi Carl,

That's actually a very good idea, but the bags are probably tossed
already - or the canister was emptied already. Or maybe not..

 Best regards and clear skies,

a meteorite, right? Anyway,it was storming outside, so I had some free time and
was thinking up some new meteorite words to play around with. Kind of a stupid
exercise but was fun.

Meteorwriter: Someone who writes a book or article about meteors/meteorites.
Postings in forums don't count.

Meteorighter: Someone who corrects meteor/meteorite mistakes. Also a meteorite
ombudsman.

Meteorbite: What happens when someone buys their first meteorite, gets hooked
and collects more.

Meteortykes: Newbies (or young kids) collecting or learning about
meteors/meteorites.

Very similar to what others have said. GREAT!

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Pairing Discussions-Still Looking for Answers

2010-01-19 Thread Carl 's

Hi Thomas, All,

You've brought up some good points. I had asked a similar question several
months ago but got mostly silence. Based on what was mentioned earlier, only
the stones that were originally collected and classified can be called NWA 869.
So like what Thomas said, all others should have the designation of Probably
paired with NWA 869 or NWA 869 paired. I'm sure there are more pairings but NWA
787/900 are the only ones I can find (see Jeff Kuykens' website):
http://www.meteorites.com.au/nwa869/

But also, note NWA 869 is from a known strewnfield in the Tindouf, Algeria
area. Maybe, like the Franconia strewnfield, dealers and collectors are
relatively sure these are what they claim it is? See also what Eric Twelker
says in his website:
http://www.meteoritemarket.com/NWA869.htm

Any thoughts anyone? Thomas and I would like to hear more from others on this.

Carl

Thomas wrote:
I think I understand the reasoning behind what has been put
forth in this discussion so far and abide with it in my own
dealings, however, I must wonder why practically everyone on
the list who deals in meteorites has not had their probably
paired with NWA 869 stones classified with a new number
rather than just listing them as NWA 869 even though they
bought them as unclassified and probably paired
with.? Is there some hypocrisy here?? Is it OK to
make an eyeball pairing with 869 but not other NWA's??
Does no one care on this one simply because there is so much
of it, so the rule does not apply?? Could it be that no
one cares about getting a new number and classification if
it's a meteorite that sells for pennies per gram, but if it
sells for many dollars or hundreds of dollars per gram, then
 it becomes important?? ...

I couldn't help notice Walter originally asked this question way back July 6,
2006.:) I don't have a point but thought it was funny.

Interesting comments from everyone but best to wait to hear from Don. Like to
hear how his thoughts were mangled by the press.

Wow, Dave, What a crowd! Wish I was there sitting in the background taking in
all of that. The teachers must have learned a lot, too.

Hi Greg,

Actually, all the dealers have been very helpful. The only one who thinks in
terms of competition is Howard Steffic who I believe is not a dealer.

All of this is pretty amazing. First of all, we ALL were newbies at some
point. Also, I think newbies buy alot of meteorites from dealers too. You
never know, a newbie now may spend 1000’s of $ over the next few years. Too
me it's very bad business to treat you customers poorly, or make fun of them.
That’s one wat to hurt sales. I joined this list to learn from the experts; if
their goal is to keep knowledge from me or look down at me, I think that's sad
and very disappointing. Then all this list becomes is a marketing site. Sure,
info about a new find or cold finds being confidential is understandable. But
what is wrong with helping someone with payment options to a Moroccan dealer?
All I can said is I only buy meteorites from certain dealers, there is a reason
for that – think about it.

[meteorite-list] Beating a dead horse to Morocco

2009-11-14 Thread Carl 's

Hello Howard, All,

You are absolutely correct. We newbies should not ask knowledgeable veterans
such basic questions. We must do the legwork ourselves but never reveal how we
do it to achieve our goals if someone asks. Speaking for myself I would like to
thank you, Howard, for all the wonderful and thought provoking topics about
meteorites you have provided in the past. Did I mention you would be a great
teacher?

For those not familiar with Howard's input, please type Howard Steffic in the
search window.

Howard, you asked if anyone actually found a meteorite? Please start a thread
about meteorites we can all talk seriously about. You know you can't rely on
newbies to do anything right. Thanks for setting us, newbies, straight!

Carl

Now lets give this thread a proper burrial and get back to meteorites. Didn't
someone actually find something (like a meteorite not an alien) that we can
talk about?...
