Isn't each rectangular slice also a geometric figure ? e.g. a square ? So this is a cube. It displays wonderful the 3-dimensional arrangement of the crystals, as this cube is cut 45° to the axis of the crystals. Wonderful 3D-Display! [meteorite-list] Elbert meteorite, Lavrentievka meteorite and NWA 4302 Diogenite
Hi all, regarding the Elbert meteorite : Thanks to Matt Morgan for making it available to get me a crusted partslice of my birthday meteorite. Elbert fell on January 11, 1998 I gave it a high polish and here are the pics: www.austromet.com/CollnPics/Elbert_3.294g_A.jpg www.austromet.com/CollnPics/Elbert_3.294g_B.jpg 5 and a half years ago Sergey Vassiliev in cooperation with Martin Horejsi made it possible to get me a 40 mg fragment of my other birthday meteorite Lavrentievka, which fell on January 11, 1938 www.austromet.com/CollnPics/Lavrentievka_0.040g.jpg Now I own a sample of every meteorite that fell on January 11th. Both are only a single stone fall with very low TKW and finally I want to show you an endcut of the NWA 4302 Diogenite that I recently got from Greg Hupe. I also gave this stone a high polish and here's the result: Looking like the great Johnstown Diogenite with great clear and shiny green olivine crystals. www.austromet.com/CollnPics/NWA_4302_1.756g_B.jpg it is really worth a look enjoy the pics best wishes to all, Christian I.M.C.A. #2673 at www.imca.cc website: www.austromet.com Ing. [meteorite-list] New Quiz - the solution
Hi all again, it is iron slag from Austria, displayed at the entrance of the "Ragga Canyon" in Flattach, Carinthia, Austria. here's a pic with the description of the iron. www.austromet.com/trips/xxx3.jpg Sign says " iron slag from the melt ovens of melt-huts (Schmelzhütten)" "melt-huts" (Schmelzhütten) is called a very, very small village nearby. Yes, another lookalike, but very interesting is the nearly perfect shape. It could be easily mixed up with a meteorite. The only one recognizing it as a slag was Harald Stehlik. He was NOT aware of this piece. He really recognized it. Great job, Harald ! Cheers again, Christian I.M.C.A. #2673 at www.imca.cc website: www.austromet.com Ing. Do you have any problems with Austria, Doug ? You don't know anything about the procedure how the dust was made in NHM Vienna. You even don't know any background. [meteorite-list] New Year Quiz - the solution
Hi all, it is picritic olivine-basalt found in Margi, Troodos on the isle Zyprus. pictures number 01 and 03 show the rough side, pictures 02 and 04 show cut and polished face. Yes, it may be a good Pallasitewrong, looking like the Al Mahbas Pallasite. the nearest guess: Fukang - Andi Gren oh... no... THAT was the funniest guess (I laughed a lot because Andi only wrote this one word in his reply). So here the nearest guesses: porphyric (alkali)olivinebasalt or a olivinecumulate - Ingo Herkstroeter peridotite. I cant see from the picture if it's lherzolite or harzburgite (olivine with clino or orthopyroxene) but it realy looks like an olivine bomb - Andrei Razvan looks similuar to some of my olivine basalts, periodotite _ Dave Freeman volcanic olivine bomb - Ken Regelman material its similar to the vulcanic bombs - Matteo Chinellato Xenoliths imbedded in an igneous rock (perodite) - Adam Hupe Thanks for taking part on the quiz. This was just for fun and I hope nobody feels annoyed. I thought it was time for a little break in the Pallasite discussion. [meteorite-list] RE: Ad - 77 Auctions Ending, Great Stuff!
Oh man, oh man I do not want to treat anybody here. Are that the real problems or the real subjects which we (should) discuss here in this list ? Are the hate tirades showing up again ? Aren't we grown up enough to let that kinds of subjects go ? Oh guys, why to discriminate other members ? I recall the subject when I started a discussion some months ago about a carbonaceous Chondrite versus a Rumuritiite ? The first reaction we got was like "hey shout your mouth, don't have doubts about a written word in the list" What was the result ? The problem was solved in a very fair way - although I was told not to discuss it in the list - I was told to do this in private mail. I accepted this and we solved this case and the opponent was a very honourable man and I pulled of my hat for that gracious guest. That showed up, what the list is here for. B U T I was told not to put differences to an open discussion to the list. I held my word so...why do we start again with this bullsh. We are members here from Europe and we are not award, we don't practice this way of life. I think I speak for many of the European guys. Nobody, really nobody, and again really nobody of us is interested in this stuff. If somebody like Stefan (Ralew) or Svend Buhl or me or Hanno puts subjects to the list, the interest and feedback is very low, but the feedback and the rumour of subjects like this is like an explosion !! How sad.. (to let all the good energy be wasted into nothing) Let me know if we use this list to discuss the matter of meteorites or if we use that list for fighting against each other ... I have observed this rule very carefully unlike a few members who demonstrate disrespect for the rest of us by ignoring Art's wishes. Hi Bernd, Annie, All... I don't think this slice to be a part of Paneth's Iron. I recently showed a picture of the big slab of Paneth's Iron on my report of the Vienna Museum. Have a look at http://www.austromet.com/index2.html click for news, select "24.08.2005 Meeting at Viennese Meteorite Collection" there you'll see the big slab. Assuming the "face of the picture" *is* 7 cm long, the width of the lamellae might be about 1.7 mm. If it is from an old collection, it may even be a piece of an historical iron called "Paneth's Iron", a coarse octahedrite (1.5± 0.3 mm). Wow, that would be something! But first of all, it is crucial to know as exactly as measurable the width of the Widmanstaetten pattern. I knew such a text existed, but the reference I had contained a question mark in the title. Now a refined question: At what point are meteorites paired? If a same day fall 50km apart with similar composition is still not enough, then what is? According to the authors, more study is needed. What might that study be? And if such synchronicity is not a preponderance of evidence for pairing, how can any ancient falls on the hot deserts ever be truly paired? Just wondering.
