2008-02-04 Thread Christian Anger
Isn't each rectangular slice also a geometric figure ? e.g. a square ?
So this is a cube. It displays wonderful the 3-dimensional arrangement of the
crystals, as
this cube is cut 45° to the axis of the crystals. Wonderful 3D-Display!

[meteorite-list] Tucson 2008

2008-01-27 Thread Christian Anger
Hi friends,

in agency of the Austrians in Tucson (unfortunately I can't make it to the show
this year)

I have following information for you.

Erich Haiderer Room 117+patio, Riverpark Inn (formerly Pueblo Inn) Room 117 ph
(520) 6226611 ext 117

You might be informed already, but just wanted to let you know about tremendous
detour challenges: As there
is only 1 single rather hidden exit off the I-10 for a long distance it might
appear likely that somebody gets lost far away of the intended goal:
"The access to all major center show locations is a huge challenge unless you
know the precise exit ramp. There is only (max.) 1 each going eastbound: Prince
Road (and not! Grant road as previously indicated) and westbound: 29th Street.
Take extreme care to watch out carefully for this precise exits and the
instructions below.
Get off I-10 at the Prince Road Exit #254
. Continue straight ahead on the southbound Frontage Road for approximately 5.0
miles
. The Riverpark Inn will be on the right -- a half block past Congress Street
If you miss the Prince Road Exit #254, you must.
. Continue on I-10 East for 5 miles to the next exit (6th Avenue)
. Get off I-10 at the 6th Avenue Exit #261
. Turn left onto 6th Avenue and cross over the Freeway
. Turn left onto the westbound I-10 entrance ramp & stay in left hand lane
. Take Exit #259 (29th Street) and travel straight on the northbound Frontage
Road
approximately 3.0 miles to Congress Street
. Turn left at Congress Street & go underneath the Freeway
. Take an immediate left turn at Carl's Jr. onto the southbound Frontage Road
. The Riverpark Inn will be on the right, a half block ahead.

Directions from the East (New Mexico & El Paso):

. Get off I-10 at the 29th Street Exit #259
. Continue straight ahead on the northbound Frontage Road for 1.5 miles
. Turn left at Congress Street & go underneath the Freeway
. Take an immediate left turn at Carl's Jr. onto the southbound Frontage Road
. The Riverpark Inn will be on the right, a half block ahead.
If you miss the 29th Street Exit #259, you must..
. Continue on I-10 West approximately 6 miles to the next exit (El Camino del
Cerro/Ruthrauff Road)
. Get off I-10 at El Camino del Cerro/Ruthrauff Road Exit #252
. Turn left at El Camino del Cerro, stay in left-hand lane & go underneath the
Freeway
. Take an immediate left turn onto the southbound Frontage Road
. DO NOT RE-ENTER THE FREEWAY -- Continue straight ahead on the Frontage Road
for approximately 6 miles
. The Riverpark Inn will be on the right -- a half block past Congress St.
. Get off I-19 at the 22nd-29th Street Exit #102

Directions from Tucson Airport:

. Exit the Airport on Tucson Blvd. & continue straight
. Turn left onto Valencia Road
. Turn right onto I-19 North
. Get off I-19 at the 22nd-29th Street Exit #102
On the frontage roads, a third lane is open to traffic, creating three lanes of
one-way traffic in each direction from Prince Road to 29th Street for local
traffic and access.

Hi all

Just to bring up again a meteorite subject,

as we had last week the iron crystal in the new Mali meteorite,

here's another iron concentration.

It is a metal inclusion in my collection specimen of the Chico impact melt
meteorite.

This one is really looking cool.

[meteorite-list] Elbert meteorite, Lavrentievka meteorite and NWA 4302 Diogenite

2007-04-01 Thread Christian Anger
Hi all,

regarding the Elbert meteorite :

Thanks to Matt Morgan for making it available to get me

a crusted partslice of my birthday meteorite.

Elbert fell on January 11, 1998

I gave it a high polish and here are the pics:

www.austromet.com/CollnPics/Elbert_3.294g_A.jpg

www.austromet.com/CollnPics/Elbert_3.294g_B.jpg

5 and a half years ago Sergey Vassiliev in cooperation with Martin Horejsi

made it possible to get me a 40 mg fragment

of my other birthday meteorite Lavrentievka, which fell on January 11, 1938

www.austromet.com/CollnPics/Lavrentievka_0.040g.jpg

Now I own a sample of every meteorite that fell on January 11th.

Both are only a single stone fall with very low TKW

and finally I want to show you an endcut of the NWA 4302 Diogenite

that I recently got from Greg Hupe. I also gave this stone a high polish and

here's the result:

Looking like the great Johnstown Diogenite with

great clear and shiny green olivine crystals.

www.austromet.com/CollnPics/NWA_4302_1.756g_B.jpg

it is really worth a look

enjoy the pics

best wishes to all,

Christian

Hello all,
Lately in the SkyRock Cafe Meteorite Forum there has been lots of talk on
etching meteorites and
the different ways in doing so. I decided to do a demonstration of the way that
I etch, I hope this
helps someone.

micros. Also I am going
to be adding a how toc etch section, there will be many photos and a short
video, I will be using
two methods, the normal one and one my wife found on her first etch by making
"a mistake". These
should all be done by friday, but many new photos have been added in the past
few days. Awsome new
pieces in my collection, I have been buying irons and stony iron mostly. I have
posted links to a
few of the links to some pages on my website.

[meteorite-list] Lampiayrie meteorite fall in 2003

2007-02-14 Thread Christian Anger
Hi all,

especially Marcin Cimala and Mike Farmer and any other members knowing about
this meteorite:

are there any new facts and a final classification of this fall from Burkina
Faso in November 2003 ?

Did anybody spend 20 grams for classification ?

If not, why not

Just looking for clarification and facts as I am one of the owner of two
samples of this meteorite

Cheers,

Christian

2006-10-30 Thread Christian Anger

Hi all,

2006 wasn't a good year for me in private so I did not find any motivation.

due to the help of some very good old friends I got the chance to visit Munich
show this year.

I will be there on friday and the 1st info-meeting on friday will be as it
always was at 14 pm

but NEW: in front of Ahmed Pani's table this year.

To make the famous group photos and to get last infos on

the Fliegerbräu meeting.

See you there,

Christian

[meteorite-list] New Quiz - the solution

2006-08-22 Thread Christian Anger
Hi all again,

it is iron slag from Austria, displayed at the entrance of the "Ragga Canyon"
in Flattach,
Carinthia, Austria.

here's a pic with the description of the iron.

www.austromet.com/trips/xxx3.jpg

Sign says

" iron slag
from the melt ovens
of melt-huts (Schmelzhütten)"

"melt-huts" (Schmelzhütten) is called a very, very small village nearby.

Yes, another lookalike, but very interesting is the nearly perfect shape.

It could be easily mixed up with a meteorite.

The only one recognizing it as a slag was Harald Stehlik. He was NOT aware of
this piece.

He really recognized it. Great job, Harald !

Cheers again,

Christian

I have to say the same as Bernd Pauli did. A beautiful meteorite.

I gave it a mirror-polish and the result is great.

Look at that jade-green meteorite.

Thanks Michael for making it available.

Green meteorites are my goal.

Cheers,

Christian

[meteorite-list] RE: Austria Will Issue Stamps with Meteorite Powder

2006-03-10 Thread Christian Anger

Do you have any problems with Austria, Doug ?

You don't know anything about the procedure how the dust was made in NHM Vienna.

You even don't know any background.

So please be quiet before you leave such words like

"...why don't you just send them a few kilograms of cutting waste..."

or

" ...save your powder in a can and then sell it to
Austriapost's IPO as an untapped opportunity... "

It seems you are taking yourself for the wisest man here.

Keep that crap for yourself.

Cheers,

Christian

[meteorite-list] Lost City and Zagami

2006-02-18 Thread Christian Anger
Hi all,

I have a 72mg micro of the famous Lost City meteorite (calculated orbit) left
for trade.
If someone is interested and has a micro of the Pribram meteorite or the
Innisfree meteorite
(also calculated orbits) for trade please contact me (pics on request).

I also have a Zagami 74mg micro left, which I want to trade for a martian
meteorite micro.
Currently I am looking for pieces of Shergotty, NWA 1669, NWA 2626, NWA 3171
or Lafayette.

Cheers,

Christian

[meteorite-list] RE: a new Quiz - part 4 - solution

2006-01-20 Thread Christian Anger
Dear Ken,

it does not matter,

thanks for your reply and keeping a fair friendship.

So please stay tuned (to all also) for a next challenge of a new quiz I am
preparing (maybe in
February).

I think it is a process to learn - a process I also have gone through along my
passion of

collecting and understanding meteorites (speaking of my own experiences).

I just want to share my experiences to our community.

...and especially to demonstrate how similar meteorite impacts and their traces
are to see in

extraterrestrial and terrestrial witnesses...

all the best to you all,

Christian

Hi Ken,

I never called this one meteoritic - when did I write that ?

I wrote it is achondritic which is true , because every terrestrial rock is
achondritic because it does not contain chondrites - don't you understand jokes
?

Question in quiz 5 you gave this picture of which I replied it looked like
mica schist but you said it was meteoritic .
Am I wrong or isn't this material terrestrial material that has been melted and
modified by a meteoritic impact ,
therefore the material is not meteoritic but impact ejecta .
At the point you called this material meteoritic I stopped the quiz . If you
are correct the tree bark at Tunguska could be called meteoritic . I am
getting off my merry go round . Sorry to bother you .
You have a nice day ..Ken Regelman Astronomical Research Network

.searching for our origins .

Hi all,

so here's part 4 of the new Quiz

a new the solution:

The first pic "Quiz_05" is Melt-Breccia from the Paasselka Impact Structure
(Finland)

Of course an Achondrite, because it is no chondrite ;-)

but looks very similar to an Eucrite like

the second pic "Quiz_06" which is DaG 443, a highly shocked brecciated polymict
Eucrite.

Some of you have been very good in guessing.

Those have been Adam Hupe, James Tobin and Ingo Herkstroeter.

Cheers,

Christian

[meteorite-list] New Year Quiz - the solution

2006-01-07 Thread Christian Anger
Hi all,

it is picritic olivine-basalt found in Margi, Troodos on the isle Zyprus.

pictures number 01 and 03 show the rough side, pictures 02 and 04 show cut and
polished face.

Yes, it may be a good Pallasitewrong, looking like the Al Mahbas Pallasite.

the nearest guess:

Fukang - Andi Gren

oh... no... THAT was the funniest guess (I laughed a lot because Andi only
wrote this one word in his reply).

So here the nearest guesses:

porphyric (alkali)olivinebasalt or a olivinecumulate - Ingo Herkstroeter

peridotite. I cant see from the picture if it's lherzolite or harzburgite
(olivine with clino or
orthopyroxene) but it realy looks like an olivine bomb - Andrei Razvan

looks similuar to some of my olivine basalts, periodotite _ Dave Freeman

volcanic olivine bomb - Ken Regelman

material its similar to the vulcanic bombs - Matteo Chinellato

Xenoliths imbedded in an igneous rock (perodite) - Adam Hupe

Thanks for taking part on the quiz.

This was just for fun and I hope nobody feels annoyed.
I thought it was time for a little break in the Pallasite discussion.

Cheers,

Christian

WOW, now this is good news. I knew they were going to grind it, but never
followed up on it. The first known and named meteorite sitting on the
surface of another planet! How cool is that?
Man, I hope we can bring it here some day! It should be at the Smithsonian,
what a centerpiece, and iron meteorite collected on Mars.
Mike Farmer

On another Mars note, the newest confirmed Martian meteorite is NWA 2975. A
shergottite that is considered to be the freshest hot-desert find known. The
main mass is sold, only 2.5 grams remain to be sold, and a small piece is in
the Michael Blood auction.
You may see it on display in my room at the Inn Suites #184 before the new
owner takes possession of it.

[meteorite-list] RE: Ad - 77 Auctions Ending, Great Stuff!

2005-11-15 Thread Christian Anger

Oh man, oh man

I do not want to treat anybody here.

Are that the real problems or the real subjects which we (should) discuss
here in this list ?

Are the hate tirades showing up again ?

Aren't we grown up enough to let that kinds of subjects go ?

Oh guys, why to discriminate other members ?

I recall the subject when I started a discussion some months ago about a
carbonaceous Chondrite versus a Rumuritiite ?

The first reaction we got was like "hey shout your mouth, don't have doubts
about a written word in the list"

What was the result ? The problem was solved in a very fair way - although
I was told not to discuss it in the list - I was told to do this in private
mail.

I accepted this and we solved this case and the opponent was a very
honourable man and I pulled of my hat for that gracious guest.
That showed up, what the list is here for.

B U T I was told not to put differences to an open discussion to the
list.

I held my word so...why do we start again with this bullsh.

We are members here from Europe and we are not award, we don't practice this
way of life. I think I speak for many of the European guys.

Nobody, really nobody, and again really nobody of us is interested in this
stuff.

If somebody like Stefan (Ralew) or Svend Buhl or me or Hanno puts subjects
to the list, the interest and feedback is very low, but the feedback and the
rumour of subjects like this is like an explosion !!

How sad..

(to let all the good energy be wasted into nothing)

Let me know if we use this list to discuss the matter of meteorites or if we
use that list for fighting against each other ...

Christian

Dean,

I do not appreciate your post the List before checking into the facts. You
are the one being "asinine" as you say for wrongfully bringing this up. I
posted once last week and once again this week. That makes one AD post per
week. I have observed this rule very carefully unlike a few members who
demonstrate disrespect for the rest of us by ignoring Art's wishes. If
everybody posted more than once a week the List would became clogged again
with advertisements. I personally think Art should throw off anybody who
abuses this rule including yourself who has posted multiple advertisements
in a single week since the rule was adapted.

Take care and show some respect for the rest of us,

Adam

2005-11-09 Thread Christian Anger
Hi Bernd, Annie, All...

I don't think this slice to be a part of Paneth's Iron.

I recently showed a picture of the big slab of Paneth's Iron

on my report of the Vienna Museum.

Have a look at

http://www.austromet.com/index2.html

click for news, select "24.08.2005 Meeting at Viennese Meteorite Collection"

there you'll see the big slab.

It looks different.

all my best,

Hello Anne and List,

Precise information about the exact bandwidth of the Widmanstaetten lamellae
would be extremely helpful. Assuming the "face of the picture" *is* 7 cm
long,
the width of the lamellae might be about 1.7 mm. If it is from an old
collection,
it may even be a piece of an historical iron called "Paneth's Iron", a
coarse
octahedrite (1.5± 0.3 mm). Wow, that would be something! But first of all,
it
is crucial to know as exactly as measurable the width of the Widmanstaetten
pattern.

Best wishes,

Bernd

Hi all,

maybe some of you are aware of Austria's beautiful

I found a small twin-brother in Munich.
I could not believe my eyes when I saw it !
It's weight is about 10% of the Prambachkirchen.

Here's a pic of the original Prambachkirchen meteorite:

Hi Bernd,

Thanks for the article. I knew such a text existed, but the reference
I had contained a question mark in the title.

Now a refined question: At what point are meteorites paired? If a same
day fall 50km apart with similar composition is still not enough, then
what is? According to the authors, more study is needed. What might
that study be? And if such synchronicity is not a preponderance of
evidence for pairing, how can any ancient falls on the hot deserts
ever be truly paired?

Just wondering.

Martin

Hi,

I got my slice of Mont Dieu nearly 4 years ago.
It was a little bit rusty on the rims.
I did a new polish, a new etch and since that
it rests in my collection and it shows no further activity in rusting.

By the way, I keep my collection room dehumidified.

here's a pic of the slice:

Why can I solve the problem of continued corrosion and you can't?
I'm not magic and I can understand the cause of corrosion. Why doesn't
anybody start thinking what causes rust? OPEN conversation invited!
