For some time now I have postulated that we human beings are, in fact, the
aliens in this solar system. We came into this system at its formation and,
using the same cosmic material, evolved into an organism that contains a
consciousness that is inexplicable and apparently cannot be replicated in any
other life form but ours which now dominates this system entirely.

Here are a few words attributed to NASA (Alief/Live Leak/author unknown)

Whether or not you believe in life outside of our solar system, the
fact that we are all here means that the stuff we're made of must have
come from somewhere. After studying meteorites and discovering
ready-made components of DNA present, NASA has concluded that the
building blocks of life as we know it may have crashed down on Earth
from above.

Researchers at the Goddard Space Flight Center discovered portions of
DNA on chunks of crashed space rock in both Antarctica and Australia.
The extraterrestrial visitors contained various types of nucleobases, which
are thought to be essential in the creation of DNA, and life in general. The
scientists were able to isolate the compounds and prove that they weren't
created here on Earth. This was particularly important, as critics often cite
contamination as the reason for these compounds appearing on meteorites
that have been studied in the past.

The team also concluded that certain space rocks — depending on their
makeup and speed — work like manufacturing facilities for these
biological precursors. The implications of the discovery are far-reaching,
and suggest that humanity may owe its existence to a well-placed meteorite
in the early days of the Earth, and that without it the planet might be a rocky,
watery wasteland.

I believe the term Panspermia is used in cosmology as a label for this
hypothesis. Panspermia, however, doesn't include the proposition that we conscious laden
beings came from somewhere else in the galaxy arriving with the Nebula.

Just a note... The Fort Collins, Colorado meteor/fireball seems to be
unrelated to the Nebraska/South Dakota fireball.

For the 10-19-11, AMS website has the events at 22:15 for the Fort
Collins, CO event, and 03:15 for the SD/NE event.

AMS Event # 1180
AMS Event # 1183

These are two separate events.

right on the

Yesterday I was robbed in Thika, Kenya by a group of men armed with

led into the field to buy meteorites. It was a well-planned and
prepared ambush set up by some of my contacts. They knew that
yesterday was my last day in the field and they wanted all the money.
I knew it was dangerous to return to the field for a third time but
they lured me back to Kenya with stories of many mo stones. I bought a
209 gram stone yesterday just after arriving, but then our contacts
told us that for 3 more pieces we had to pick up a guy and he would
take us to the location. Should have known this was a disaster, but
overconfident. We drove through the del Monte pineapple fields toward
Mwana Wikio so I knew it was the strewn field area so was not
concerned. We arrived in a desolate area with a small stone building
and after waiting about 2 minutes two guys walked past the car,
nothing abnormal in Africa. Suddenly I saw a guy run up beside our car
with a gun and my driver tried to start the car but it was too late, 5
or 6 guys ambushed us including the guy in the car. They beat my
driver and other guy with us, forced them out of nuts car and locked
them in the trunk. I was sandwiched in between two guys with a machete
at my throat, a very sharp one. I kept telling the to relax, take the
money, they were all yelling in English and Swahili for me to give
them the dollars. I kept telling them I had Kenyan shillings only. I
had about $2500 cash me, they ripped my clothes apart and ransacked
the car. They took my phones American and Kenyan, wallet, passport,
backpack with meteorite, camera etc, even took my Teva sandals off my
feet, one man had the gun at my head the other the machete at my
throat the entire time so I could not move. One kept screaming at them
to kill him, finish it;. I must have been more calm than at any
other time in my life and you all know I am not a calm person. Oddly
it seemed like time was standing still, all this activity around me
and yelling and I just kept telling them to relax, take the money and
let us go. Suddenly all of them got in the car, me and 3 in the back
and two in the front and they moved the car into the woods, brush. I
was then realizing that they were likely going to kill us, why move
the car after you get all the stuff? Then one guy said again to kill
me and the other said no. He then threw me my passport and wallet
empty of cash of course, and said no documents then ask me if I
could drive. I said yes and he told me to drive. I tried to get out
but one hit me in the head with something and told me not to get out
but to go over the seats, I was then panicking and struggling to get
to the front of the car, but somehow got the car started and they all
ran. I drove very fast down very bad dirt trail with my two guys in
the trunk screaming, after maybe a mile or so I stopped and let them
out. We rushed to the Thika main police station and reported the
robbery.

It was foolish to go into the bush and I nearly paid with my life this
time, they planned the attack for days communicating with my driver.
The police are pulling all his call records so should be able to catch
them. They took a lot of expensive things like my Tag Heur watch, Sony
camera, I phone etc, all can be found as no one there has money for
such things. Sentence for violent armed robbery here is mandatory life
in prison, which the police told me would be lucky to pass 10 years
before dying.

My wife decided to stay in the hotel in Nairobi thank god she was
scared and told me not to go. She knew something bad was going to
happen. Heading home now, a lot poorer but happy to have my head
attached.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Auction Days Numbered?

2011-09-30 Thread Eric Wichman
The writing has been on the wall for a while now. Hopefully I'm wrong...
With all the fuss over the years with suspect and obvious fake
meteorites on Ebay, misleading and incorrect information and
identification of terrestrial stones claimed as meteorites by
inexperienced folks trying to make a quick buck on that lava rock they
found in their driveway that wasn't there yesterday. Problems of
international shipping and the tightening of export laws in other
countries which govern, or at least try to govern the exportation of
meteorites.

Ebay is starting to take measures to prohibit meteorite sales on their
international sites, as per a recent post on the Met-List a little
while ago. (I'm assuming some dealers used to list items internationally
on multiple international Ebay sites like others have, but now Ebay is
seemingly prohibiting this practice. Hopefully this is not a sign of
things to come.)

Recent posts about suspect Lunar meteorites, and the numerous other
suspect and supposed meteorites that get listed on Ebay, the countless
emails from meteorite dealers to Ebay about apparent and obviously
fraudulent Ebay auctions featuring fake meteorites doesn't really help.
This coupled with the ambiguous and non-standard international export
and import laws in other countries regarding meteorites, I think selling
meteorites on Ebay might become a thing of the past. There are too many
other products with much less hassle and risk for Ebay to allow to be
listed, without dealing with the liability of the possibility of suspect
and or blatantly fraudulent meteorite auctions which might cause buyers
undo loss, or inadvertent proliferation of non-meteoritic material
throughout the meteorite community. This causes much confusion on what a
meteorite really looks like, and identification of meteorites by
psuedo-experts, and backyard meteorite hunters who quickly list their
find on Ebay hurts the community, and ultimately the science. Not that
Ebay cares about that, but if any of these things increase their risk,
and meteorites become too much of a liability, or it costs them too much
money to wade through the possible legal and/or business policy disputes
that arise from meteorite listings, then they would have no reason to
continue to allow meteorites to be listed.

Meteorite auction days on Ebay might just be numbered.

Eric

Re: [meteorite-list] Earth Ejecta Could Have Seeded Life on Europa

2011-08-25 Thread Eric Wichman
Absolutely! Why not? It makes perfect sense. Not sure why it's taken
science this long to start accepting the idea. We have Mars and Lunar
meteorite recovered on Earth that were ejected millions of years ago and
fell no too long ago in geologic history. Mars has many meteorites on it
which were found by the rovers. We're reasonably sure most came from the
asteroid belt, sure, but that's not to say that there aren't Earth rocks
on Mars, or the Moon.

A massive impact on Earth will eject tons of dirt and rock into space.
Of that there is no doubt, and all of that dirt and rock has living
microbes in it. Some will fall back to the planets surface, or be
captured again by Earth's gravity, but some will continue on out into
the solar system eventually impacting other planets. Again, it makes
sense that this would happen. Go into your backyard and take any handful
of dirt and place it under a microscope. What do you see? Microbes.
Millions of them. So it's not like there's a shortage of microbes on
Earth. A large asteroid impact is without a doubt going to eject at
least some material into space. To me this is a no-brainer and something
scientists should have latched on to decades ago. Why some people are
still holding on to old ways of thought and analysis, and resisting
newer ideas, studies, and data I have no idea.

This is some of the most exciting news that I've heard scientists report
yet. The prospect of abiogenesis/panspermia is extremely exciting. As
Matthias said, it is breathtakingly interesting!

Absolutely! The connections and information and social aspect of
Facebook is much better and more pleasing than a simple email list. I
guess some people are just technophobic.

The photos, videos, link sharing, commenting, liking, friending,
connecting and social interaction just can't be matched. Photo galleries
can be created at will, you can stay updated on what your friends are
doing, and it's good for business! Almost every big dealer I know uses
Facebook for selling their meteorites. It's a great marketing tool, and
you don't get bitched at by whiners who don't like seeing an Ad in their
email box. If you don't want to look at an ad, it's easy to just move on
to the next thing on Facebook.

Way cooler than a static email list... Oh, and Geoff Notkin's Club Space
Rock... Well, it rocks too! Pure meteorites and social networking.

Email lists are being phased out the way the dinosaurs were. Facebook
and Google+ are the asteroids that smashed the email lists and
traditional forums.

45 people hunted on Saturday.

26 people found one or more meteorites.

13 people found their first meteorite ever!

16 people found their first Holbrook meteorite ever!

19 found a good time but no meteorites. (However, everyone left with a
Holbrook meteorite.)

82 total finds and 440 grams of meteorites were found on Saturday alone!

Everyone (even if they found nothing) went home with a certificate of
participation, at least one meteorite and three hunters also left with
trophies for spectacular finds!

I hope we'll see some photos soon from Bob, Ben, Jim, Mark and others.

I should have the video ready by tomorrow!

Thanks to all that attended and to JIM AND WENDY - for all their help!

Stay tuned!

to pick me up and head home, uncle Rich found a nice ~1.5 grammer! We were
thrilled about that! We were really hoping and praying that he would make a
nice find.

Thanks Ruben and Jim for the great ceremony after the hunt. Nobody went home
empty handed on this hunt thanks to Ruben - and we all received fantastic

Made it back to Parker. For some reason...really tired today. Would
it be because Mark Bowling and Xu Zhang kept me up until 0130 this
morning discussing everything and anything about Fire Balls!

Anyway, compiling data and as it stands at this time:

82 total finds, total weight 439.1g for Saturday, July 16th hunt.

A new King and a new Prince of Holbrook were crowned!

One special number for me is 5! Out of 13 hunters that found their
first ever meteorite, I was able to tell 5 of them, in the field, they
found their first meteorite...and that was just awesome! Each time,
it was like remembering my first find!

My finds for 3 days totaled 46.

Ruben should have more later when I am done with report

Great event!

We had world class hunters, Nick Gessler, Bob Verish, Moni Waiblinger
as well as Erik and Ben Fisler that came to share their knowledge and
expertise with new hunters. A few of these future “Hall of Fame”
Hunters shocked and inspired us all with the shear number and size of
their finds! I have great footage of the spectacular specimens found!

Over 50 people attended and 47 participated in yesterdays hunt.
Imagine this, all but 10 found one or more meteorites. However, NO ONE
went home empty handed.

Except for Larry’s mutli-pound specimen of a few years ago this hunt
was the most successful in the last 10-20 years – at least that I know
of…..

I am currently editing footage of this hunt that will go down as one
to be remembered.
I won’t spoil the surprise just yet but I think everyone will be
shocked at how much was recovered and how the “Mighty Holbrook Strewn

I’m happy to report that I witnessed NO arguing, No trash left behind,
NO trouble whatsoever!

For the record...

The landowners dropped the case because it was a PR nightmare for them
because the Doctors and the Smithsonian pulled bogus and shameful
tactics using the media and the Haitian Earthquake Crisis against the
landowners and merely appealed to the public's emotion on the issue
simply making them out to be the bad guys in the media if they continued
to fight it. Oh what bad people these greedy landowners must be to try
to take away the meteorite from the public, and the money from those in
need in Haiti. Oh my...

They didn't drop the case because the doctors were right. They dropped
it because of the negative press and smear campaign played out in the
media by the Doctors and the Smithsonian. Simple as that.

This Case was never decided on legally in a court. Therefore the issue
is still open and *unresolved* with regard to the legal ownership of
meteorites falling on private property.

Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA] Collateral Damage.

2011-07-04 Thread Eric Wichman
Good point Richard and Jim! I didn't even think about this angle, and it
really makes a lot of sense. My warning flag waved when I read about
them showing up a day early, but I dismissed it because of these
people's perceived plight. Perhaps this family wasn't a family at all,
and were as Jim pointed out, grifters.

I was in Quartzite for the first time ever last year. I wandered the
show all day for one day with my family. Some of the dealers and people
we met and spoke with were pretty shady characters. Many times the
dealers approach you directly like a hungry car salesman with beady
little xray eyes. Bad breath, stinking and sweaty, gold teeth and rotten
ones too. Some of them reminded me of the pirates of old, only they had
rocks instead of ships. All of them had the best quality rocks you
ever saw at the best prices. Yeah...

The family that met with the Count, that supposedly got ripped off
very well may not have. It might have been a con like Jim and Richard
suggest to separate the Count from his hard earned money. Now they know
that the Count has real meteorites! That fact should give pause for
increased security.

I mean seriously... What idiot would hock all their shit for a box of
rocks after watching a TV show?

Even if they did, it's caveat emptor, and the buyers fault for trying to
buy and sell something they know nothing about. What if someone you
didn't know came up to you and said they had a product you knew nothing
about but that could make you loads of money? Would you be foolish
enough to hock all of your belongings to buy a product you know nothing
about, from someone you don't know, for a huge amount of money and still
blame a TV show you watched the other night for your troubles? No, of
course not. That would be silly wouldn't it?

This story sound fishy. Either A) They're telling the truth, were
ignorant of the product they were buying, their judgment clouded by
greed and desperation, and they got conned. or B) They were the cons.

My questions to the Count:

Did these people seem very upset when they found out that their rocks
were not meteorites? You said she and her husband looked stricken.
Maybe that was shock that you knew what you were talking about, and now
they know you have real meteorites.

I mean, if their story were real, their genuine sadness, embarrassment,
and anger would have shown through like a beacon in the night. Did they
show any kind of emotion that would support this, or did they just shrug
it off and move on? Did the quiet husband get angry and say to his
wife, see, I told you so...?

and

Have you stepped up your security at your home, just in case these guys
were the cons, and might come back knowing you have lots of valuable
meteorites?

I don't want to make you feel uneasy, but... Be careful. Maybe the quiet
husband was watching. This people might be back.

Eric

All,

I'm a little disappointed that the Count used an inflammatory subject
line, but I think understand the reason behind its use. I expected and
am not surprised to see the bashing of the Meteorite Men show. I've
shared my opinions about the show in the past so will not say more
about it other than I doubt very much the show had anything to do with
this event.

(BTW, if I am not mistaken, the 3rd season is in production right now,
so my guess is any program ideas might get considered if they get a
season 4...)

I'm in more of the opinion that the Count met with grifters. Jim
Wooddell first mentioned this idea on the Met List so I am in
agreement with him on this.

The whole thing sounds suspicious to me. It sounds more likely that
their hope was to meet with someone who did NOT know what they were
doing and sell their crap to him. Maybe I'm wrong here. Count spent
time with these people and has a better vantage point, but as soon as
they showed up unexpected, a day early, the red flag started waving
for me.

Count mentions the husband. Here's a strange bird. Seriously, do you
know of any man who has children to feed, that will allow anyone to
essentially give away all their worldly possessions just for a box of
rocks?

I certainly hope the truth is this and not the story that was told to
Count. That indeed would be sad. I also hope the Count stops giving
out his home address to complete strangers. A neutral location to meet
is always a much better idea. The next seller may not be so friendly
and be more interested in taking possession of his collection than
adding to it...

Cheers from balmy Tucson. Only reaching 40C (105F) today!

Allende - Got a couple good photos, need more...

Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Facebook

2011-06-14 Thread Eric Wichman
Facebook a waste of time...? Hundreds of millions of people now use
Facebook as their open-id to keep their online profiles consolidated
and allow one-click-login to a myriad of sites all over the web.

Facebook is worth billions upon billions of dollars, over 500 million
users on Facebook, companies make untold millions of dollars using
Facebook for their businesses, and it connects hundreds of millions of
people worldwide, has helped raise hundreds of millions dollars for
causes and charities worldwide. Facebook has helped educate the
illiterate, empower women, feed the hungry, house the homeless, fund
scientific research for countless technologies -medical and commercial.
Facebook (and Twitter) has helped propagate political revolutions of
freedom through the world, and allows like minded individuals all over
the planet to communicate unimpeded by the limits of human
transportation, region, culture, race, or the oppressions of government
or religion. It connects, it teaches, it learns, it's the new internet.

I would beg to differ on your opinion that Facebook is a waste of time.

Eric

Re: [meteorite-list] Let's Clear This Up Move Forward! (Was: Anyone else get or can explain this?)

2011-05-26 Thread Eric Wichman
Hi Elizabeth, List, I'm not sure what the screen looks like when you
sign up, but the issue that seems confusing is Paypal will auto-renew if
that option was either chosen, or not deselected when someone signed
up originally. There was probably an option on Paypal to auto-renew and
it may have been checked automatically in the beginning. No one will be
billed without their consent because all auto-renewals have been
canceled. This is why many people received a cancellation notice via
Paypal today.

As for the previous magazines. All magazines will be delivered to
everyone who ordered them according to the new schedule I've posted on
the blog. That's what my previous email was about. If you did not see
that post, or if you didn't receive the update via email please go to
the site and read the updates and the announcement:

If anyone has ANY questions please feel free to send me an email and
I'll be happy to answer your questions.

Just for future reference, the METEORITE-LIST has nothing to do with the
magazine. If you have a question about the magazine, instead of asking
the list send me an email, or check the magazine blog. ALL answers

Hi Mr Meteorite!

We just finished up an iPhone app called Meteorite Hunter and would
like to provide you with a free copy.

http://www.innerfence.com/howto/redeem-free-promo-code-for-iphone-app-from-iphone-or-itunes

Here is a brief description of the app:

Meteorite Hunter maps and displays all of the earth's known meteorite
and impact crater discoveries (non-Antarctic). Map annotations for
each event are added, and the location coordinates plus other
information is provided for each event. Simply click on an annotation
to bring up the name and exact location of each event. Click on the
detail disclosure button to bring up even more information about each
event, such as the discovery date, mass, the type of meteorite, etc.

Browse the world map and zoom in on strewn fields and impact craters
from around the world. Find the most fruitful meteorite hunting areas
near you. Add and track your own meteorite discoveries with automatic
location detection, and track your current location with respect to an
area of interest.

Due to the many thousands of known discoveries, the map annotations
are grouped until the zoom level is such that the individual locations
can be shown. Impact craters are shown with purple annotations.
Meteorite discoveries that result from a witnessed fall are shown as
green, and discoveries where the fall was not witnessed are shown as
red.

Happy hunting!

[meteorite-list] Kepler Questions

2011-04-30 Thread Eric Wichman
Hey List, I'm in the middle of an article for the magazine, and need
some information/data here please.

The Kepler data states 1235 planets were discovered, of those 68 were
Earth sized and 54 within the habitable zone. It also says that the area
of Keplers view spans an area about 1/400th the whole sky where 156,000
stars reside.

What I cannot find is the number telling me how many stars those planets
were found orbiting. Not the total in Keplers view mind you, but the
total stars out of the 156,000 that actually had planets around them.

The closest thing I could find is this Among the stars with planetary
candidates, 170 show evidence of multiple planetary candidates.
http://kepler.nasa.gov/news/nasakeplernews/index.cfm?FuseAction=ShowNewsNewsID=98
http://kepler.nasa.gov/news/nasakeplernews/index.cfm?FuseAction=ShowNewsNewsID=98

This only tells me the number of stars which have *multiple* exoplanets.
Not the total number of stars that actually had planets orbiting them.

Is that number available somewhere? Am I missing it?

Regards,
Eric

Yeah I doubt the object is a meteorite either. But it does pose the
question. What the heck is it?!

My guess is space debris from a satellite or possible some industrial
accident, or possibly even from passing a plane. The object in the
photos does appear to have been heated some way though. I'm leaning
toward space debris.

It obviously crashed through the windshield and the dashboard. I don't
know about the heat thing reported in the article though. That seems a
bit off if you ask me.

Re: [meteorite-list] Unidentified object from sky destroys car in Cottonwood

2009-03-12 Thread Eric Wichman
The plastic film might be melted but I can't tell by the photos. If it
is then that would mean that the piece of debris was obviously hot while
in flight. Since we are reasonably sure that a meteorite of this size
capable of producing a hole the size of the one seen in the photo
couldn't have been hot enough to melt the protective coating
(particularly at the speeds needed to produce the hole) on the
windshield then I would venture to say it might have been a piece of
fiery -and heavy- debris from some Earthy and very terrestrial
explosion. A burning piece of machinery or metal can fly very far
(perhaps a mile or more) from the location of an explosion. Perhaps this
is the answer. But this hangs on the supposition that the window coating
is in fact melted, which you can't tell by the photos.

These excerpts from the article say most of it:

...'There was a loud explosion and bright light,' Orsot said. Rustled
from his sleep, Orsot looked outside but didn't see anything unusual, so
he went back to bed.

Shasta County sheriff's deputies responded ...to a cluster of 911 calls
in the neighborhood - all reporting a startling sound...

...'It was a big kaboom,' said Leroy Bolls, the couple's next-door
neighbor. 'Like a sonic boom, but real close.'...

He and his wife, Suzie, said the sound was strong enough to shake their
house, and they thought a propane tank might have exploded...

The piece pictured in the article is very small, maybe an inch or two
and very light.

..The piece Birondo still has at his office weighs 0.07 of a gram..
This is not the main impactor.

...Birondo said he sent one to the state Department of Justice crime
laboratory. He hasn't heard back from scientists there on what the
material might be...

We'll just have to wait and see what the lab says, if they say anything
at all..

Eric

Pat Brown wrote:

Hi Eric and the List,

Interesting photos. I highly doubt that the windshield melted, it looks much more like the plastic film between the layers of glass (that make it safety glass as used in windshields) just stretched from the impacting object.

The photo of the 'debris' inside the car shure does not look like a meteorite
or a re-entered piece of space junk. It also does not look like a blade from a
big wood chipper like the last few 'meteorites' hitting cars and houses.

be anything but a portion of a possible part number

The entire fragment is no more than one inch in
the longest dimension, heavily battered and folded.
The odds favor the wood chipper or the jet engine
where parts may be in high kinetic energy states of
motion. On the right side of the object in the photo
there seems to be a plane feature but we can't see it.

The data in the news story can (as always) be
utterly disregarded, but it's no meteorite.

[meteorite-list] Meteoroids Before Meteorites

2009-03-12 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi all,

While looking at photos of our most recent extraterrestrial visitor, the
West meteorite, I was wondering what the meteoroid looked like while
floating around in space... Look how nice and white this piece is on the
inside. http://www.rocksfromspace.org/133g_Interior.JPG Fusion crust
is only formed while entering our planets atmosphere. Meaning that this
meteorite was obviously whitish in color while still a meteoroid. Right?

Space is a vacuum, and a vacuum preserves things right? Look at the moon
and all the wonderful craters and how wonderfully preserved they are.
The moon never changes color except when viewed through our atmosphere.
From space it looks the same as it did millions of years ago.

Does this mean that the West meteoroid, while in space and before it
hit our planet, was white? I mean, it's not like the minerals that make
up the meteoroid change colors before hitting our planet. Right?

I guess the reason I ask this is that we all see photos of asteroids
that are dark gray, gray-black or brown blobs of space rock floating
around the solar system. I think our perception of meteorites are quite
different. We tend to think of rocks from space as dark rocks floating
around aimlessly and randomly bumping into one another occasionally
sending pieces our way to be pulled in by our planets gravity.

Are there huge white rocks floating around out there? And if so,
wouldn't they be slightly easier to spot than a dark blob of an asteroid?

I hope these aren't dumb questions.

[meteorite-list] Stolen Canyon Diablo Meteorite To Be Returned

2009-03-11 Thread Eric Wichman

I found article this in my email box this morning...

..This story begins not in a galaxy far away, but at a Milwaukee
rummage sale a few years ago. Tom Lynch paid $10 for an odd hunk of
metal he figured might be copper or bronze with potential salvage value.

He had no idea it had dropped from space into the Arizona desert some
50,000 years ago.

For the last two years, it kept my grandson's basketball hoop from
blowing over in the yard. It weighs 50 pounds, said Lynch, a retired
foundry and General Motors worker who lives in South Milwaukee.

Recently, he saw a show about meteorites on the Travel Channel and
realized that's probably what he had. It was curious, he thought, that
the thing never oxidized in the weather. Following advice from the TV
show, he held a magnet up to the object and it stuck.

He took his 4.6 billion-year-old find to the Milwaukee Public Museum and
then to Chicago's Field Museum last month. The scientists got excited.
Yes, they said, it's a meteorite..

Please, everyone who has not reported in number of stones and weights, please do this.
I am working on an abstract to present to MAPS and need to get this data for a strewnfield map. I have nearly 100 stones mapped and listed. It would really help get this strewnfield correct if I got data from those who have not reported in.
Notkin, Thompson, Schwade, etc etc etc.

I don't need to know your super-secret honey-hole, but some hard numbers would
let those of us working for science to report this correctly.
Anyone...
Anyone...

Anyone working with these guys, please try to get me a stone count and total weight.

By the way, Ward, Myself, Shauna, and Greg are all back hunting here, the strewnfield has been stretched out 6 miles further than the last known stone by a 1.7 kilogram individual. It now places the strewnfield into the Aquilla area and beyond. So we now have a ~13 mile long strewnfield.
I found one small 9 gram broken stone yesterday but no one I know found anything today.

[meteorite-list] What's the deal?

2009-03-09 Thread Eric Wichman

What is the deal with all the recent meteor sightings?

Is it me or does there seem to be more sightings recently?

March 7th, Saturday Morning 12:24am; Westchester:

http://lohud.com/article/20090308/NEWS02/903070400/-1/SPORTS

Or is it simply increased awareness created by the meteorite fall in Texas?

[meteorite-list] Thank you West Texas!

2009-03-07 Thread Eric Wichman

some luck, but mostly it's skill and certainly I needed more experience
in the field. A good friend of mine says he makes his own luck, and he's
surely one to listen to, as he seems to have a knack for finding main
masses. First you need to know where to look in the first place, and
then in knowing how to spot the meteorites on the ground. And from my
experience and the discussions I've had with most hunters out there,
this was not an easy one to hunt and I should count myself lucky I found
even one piece. I do, and I am grateful for the help and excited I found
one. I will not sell it, I might cut a piece off to sell, but the main
piece goes in my small collection of first finds.

It was a wonderful experience to go on this trip, and worth every penny.
I am proud to have gone out and braved the West. We met some great
people, made some new friends, and had the priveledge to hunt with
veteran hunters from all over. This is truly a great meteorite, and a
trip to remember.

Thank you all...

Re: [meteorite-list] Holbrook Photos

2009-03-04 Thread Eric Wichman

Very nice indeed! Great job Erik!

I was thinking that since Holbrook was a relatively fresh meteorite
(compared to say Franconia or GB and most NWA I've seen), it's amazing
to see how much or little the fusion crust on some pieces weather away.
Holbrook falling in 1912 and being on the ground not quite 100 years is
a blink of an eye in geological time. The crust in in good shape and
there's some patina and oxidation.

I can imagine whatever is not destroyed of the West TX fall will look
worse than Holbrook in 100 years due to the weather in Texas. Keep in
mind that lots of land out there is not farmland but ranches and they
don't get plowed or irrigated like cropland. Stones that are on the
ranches, -as long as they stay ranches- should be relatively preserved
right? Rainfall/Snowfall must also be considered but The only data I
found said about 8 inches annually for the area.

Not that we'll be around to see it but, what do you think West will look
like in 100 Years?

[meteorite-list] AD: Expedition Sale

2009-02-19 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi all,

I know all you guys are super excited about the new fall in Texas, as am
I. I'm raising funds right now for an expedition. Please help us fund it
by purchasing from either our ebay auctions or our site. All funds
raised will be used to finance this expedition.

I'll be listing items all day today, tonight and into tomorrow... We
hope to be ready to leave in 24-48 hours at most.

Auctions: http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/freel3orn
Site: http://www.meteoritesusa.com/west-texas-meteorite.htm

This trip will be documented every step of the way, complete with
photos, video, interviews, an article and daily blog posts documenting
the expedition every step of the way. You guys who are unable to get
there can stay updated on this expedition every step of the way. To my
knowledge no one has yet documented an expedition in this manner. This
will be just about as good as being there as most posts will be almost
LIVE! to the site within minutes.

No locations will be given publicly to protect the area and the
residents of the small town from being inundated with more people than
are already going to be there. We will not be taking requests for
material. yet... If we are fortunate enough to find any meteorites we
have plans to donate a portion to local and state Universities.

Whether we find any stones or not, this is an opportunity we just can't
pass up.

If you can help it will be greatly appreciated.

Please contact me OFF-LIST if you have any questions or would like to
help or take part.

Maybe a carpool, I have a 4X4 Jeep and I'm ready to go, anyone wishing
to ride along needs to contact me ASAP to make arrangements ;)

[meteorite-list] Fiery debris seen in Texas skies not from satellite collision, officials say

2009-02-16 Thread Eric Wichman

Fiery debris seen in Texas skies not from satellite collision, officials say
11:20 PM CST on Sunday, February 15, 2009
By RUDOLPH BUSH / The Dallas Morning News
rb...@dallasnews.com
Fiery debris burned through the Texas sky Sunday morning, alarming some
and enchanting others but resulting in no apparent injury or damage.

Video

From Dallas to Austin and beyond, sightings were reported of a red and
orange fireball with a small black center speeding toward Earth before
burning out in a trail of lingering white smoke.

Roland Herwig, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration’s
southwest division, said the fireball was probably superheated debris
from a broken satellite falling to Earth.

The FAA could not directly link the debris to the reported collision
last week of Russian and U.S. communications satellites, however.

“It’s yet to be proved it’s those satellites,” Herwig said.

However, a spokeswoman for U.S. Strategic Command said the fireball
spotted in the Texas skies Sunday was unrelated to the satellite collision.
Air Force Major Regina Winchester said that Joint Space Operations
Center at California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base has been monitoring the
debris from the collision, and that could not have caused the dramatic
sight. She also said the fireball was not related to the estimated
18,000 man-made objects that the center also monitors.

“There was no predicted re-entry,” Winchester said about the objects in
Earth’s orbit.
She said it could possibly have been a natural phenomenon such as a
meteorite.

It’s unclear exactly how many pieces of debris tumbled toward Texas or
whether any more are on the way.

The potential danger from debris did prompt the FAA to warn pilots
nationwide to be aware of the hazard and to immediately report any
sightings.
State emergency management officials and local law enforcement agencies
also were on alert across much of Texas.

Based on reports of a fireball near Waco, local law enforcement officers
searched for debris but found nothing, a Texas Department of Public
Safety spokeswoman said.

Though no one could pinpoint where the debris fell or if it even
remained intact through the burnout, the fireball left an impression on
those who saw it.

They say it burned anywhere from a few seconds to nearly a minute. And
in some areas, particularly in East Texas, there were reports of a sonic
boom.

While it may not be clear for some time what fell from the sky, it
seemed to be a singular event.

Most sightings in Texas were reported about 11 a.m.

Some people thought it was a meteor. Others thought perhaps it was a
plane crashing.

Doug Schmidt of Richardson was driving south on Central Expressway near
the Bush Turnpike when he saw a flash of light in the sky.
“It was like a ball of flame with a tail. It looked like a meteor,” he
said. “There was flame and then a flash and smoke trailing it. I said
‘Wow, look at that.’ ”

Farther south, in Ovilla, Chris Weaver said he stepped outside and just
by chance looked south. That’s when he saw a flash of orange moving fast
in the sky before burning into a streak of white smoke.

“If you were looking up at the southern sky, you couldn’t miss it,” he said.

There have been scattered reports across the country of debris falling
to Earth since the Russian and U.S. satellites collided Tuesday about
500 miles above Earth.

The collision occurred over Siberia and sheared thousands of shards of
debris through Earth’s orbit.

Pieces of that debris will continue to float through orbit for thousands
of years or more, while other pieces will at times fall to Earth,
probably likely burning up as they pass through the atmosphere, experts say.

Staff writer Jeff Mosier and The Associated Press contributed to this
report.

[meteorite-list] Announcement: CosmicAuctions.com is LIVE!

2009-02-09 Thread Eric Wichman

Dear Meteorite People,

Please forward this email to EVERYONE on your email list...

This is an idea, a new venue, to bring to you, the meteorite collector,
dealer, seller, hunter, and enthusiast a trusted place to go to buy sell
trade and collect authentic meteorites.

We've been working very hard over the last year to bring to the
meteorite community a brand new and perhaps better venue for collectors
and dealers. We've asked, interviewed, brainstormed, argued, expanded
and contracted ideas with many meteorite dealers and collectors about
what the meteorite community really would like to see, and the one thing
that kept coming up was authenticity. Fair price was second, and for
dealers, listing and selling fees were in the top three things that
needed some serious attention.

I want to personally thank everyone who has helped us bring this new
site to a reality. Over the last few months I have personally had the
pleasure to work with many dealers and collectors from across this
wonderful community and they have been a great help with advice, ideas,
and suggestions about bringing this site to life. I appreciate
everyone's patience while we worked on this behind the scenes so as to
build it in such a way to address the single biggest issue regarding
selling meteorites on the web. Trust!

Some of you already know about this site. Most of you don't. But either
way I hope you'll like this idea. It's really a testbed for something
much larger, and without you guys it will not work. Some of the things
we have addressed...

1. Trust; To provide a safe and trusted environment to buy sell and
trade AUTHENTIC meteorites on the web.
2. Price; To garner a fair market price for ALL meteorites sold on this
site. This is not a race to the lowest price as Ebay is. Yet, the
bargains will be automatic based on the laws of supply and demand and
not artificially inflated or lowered due to price wars.
3. Cost; Free Listings to Dealers and Sellers (this includes collectors
who sell their collections or individual meteorites)

Requirements To Sell: Dealers must be referred by at least 2 other
members. We tried an idea that maybe dealers should be allowed to sell
by invitation only. This posed problems as anyone could invite anyone so
we figured a compromise would be good. Similar to how the IMCA works,
Dealers and Collectors who wish to sell on the site will be required to
either be IMCA members in good standing and/or be referred by 2 other
current site members. You need not be an IMCA member to join or buy, but
to sell items you must meet these requirements.

Requirements to Buy: You must like meteorites... ;)

We hope that you will take a look, and browse the site. Join, and list
some items. Try it out. If you don't like it that's ok, if you do like
it great, and if you love the idea then welcome aboard!

No matter your opinion we want to hear your feedback on this. Seriously...

You are what will make this a success. Ask yourself these 4 questions.

Do you want a safe and trusted place to buy and sell meteorites?
Are you sick and tired of FeeBay's listing fees and costs to sell your
meteorites?

Do you want to buy meteorites at a fair and reasonable price?
Are you tired of all the fake meteorites on the web?

If you answered YES to any of these questions you owe it to yourself to
check out this new site. Try it out, list meteorites, buy meteorites and
enjoy the brand new and world's first meteorite auction site dedicated
to the meteorite community. These are truly meteorite auctions for
meteorite people by meteorite people.

Buy Sell Trade Collect Join Here: http://www.cosmicauctions.com

Again, I'd like to thank all of you who have helped make this possible.
You know who you are.

Good Luck! Happy Hunting! Certainly Enjoy the new site!

I welcome any questions or comments.

Re: [meteorite-list] Fairly odd meteorites...

2009-02-08 Thread Eric Wichman
Pete, I might be inclined to agree with that... It just seems weird. The
exterior of the stone gave no indication that there might be some
contamination. I might also be water, but I doubt that as the residue
has an oily feel to it. It's slick to the touch on your fingers. I'm
going to drop a small chondrite in some oil and let it sit for a while
then cut it and see if I can duplicate this. If not then it might prove
it's not contamination at all but some great alien primordial ooze and
we have just infected our planet with an X-files type of contagion. LOL ;)

Regardless of that, the piece is still very nice. I love the look of the
stone and it's got lots of iron. Very cool piece.

Found a really cool piece in a batch of NWA. Super light colored matrix,
no well defined chondrules at all, and low iron.

Anyone have any material similar to this:
http://www.meteoritesusa.com/blog/595/

The crust actually has a slight greenish tinge to it. And the piece has
very low magnetism.

Anyone have anything like it?

[meteorite-list] Back to Tucson! Maybe... AD?

2009-02-05 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi all,

Please forgive all my emails this week, we are really trying hard to get
back out to Tucson tomorrow and we're very close! In a last ditch
attempt and very transparent way I am throwing caution to the wind and
offering up my baby. My very first meteorite website, MeteoriteWatch.com

This is more of an announcement and not a meteorites for sale ad.

Please read the post here:
http://www.meteoritewatch.com/viewtopic.php?f=2t=287

I don't want to shut this site down and would much rather hand over the
reigns to someone who will give it the care it deserves. I simply don't
have time to run 3 meteorite related websites and will be concentrating
all my efforts on MeteoritesUSA.com and another meteorite venture I've
been working on for the last year... (hopefully you guys will enjoy it)

I'm accepting serious offers on the Meteoritewatch.com domain. It's only
up for sale for the next 24 hours, just enough time to get back out to
the Tucson show for the Birthday Bash.

We went last weekend and had an awesome time, met some really great
people and enjoyed ourselves and the show immensely. We're hoping to get
back out there this coming weekend (tomorrow) and meet everyone at the
big party tomorrow night.

Help us do this and we will be eternally grateful...

As a side note and I know this might be pushing it just a little bit, I
do have a big chondrite sale ( http://www.meteoritesusa.com/nwa/ ) going
on with loads of great stuff I picked up at the show last week.
Purchases will help us get back out to Tucson and allow us to get even
more meteorites for you guys who can't make it to the show. I will shop
around the show for you as well and be your on-site buyer if you like as
well. I've had a couple people ask me to do this for them already and it
gave me this idea.

We're really looking forward to meeting everyone and attending the
Michael Blood auction if possible. If we can't do it I'll see you there
next year!

Thanks in advance for you guys' patience with my emails this week while
the show is in town. I promise I won't email this much again, at least
until next year! ;)

[meteorite-list] Tektite with metal?

2009-02-04 Thread Eric Wichman

Hey all,

On my recent adventure to the Tucson show I purchased many meteorites
and about 6 kilos of tektites, in the batch of tektites I found an odd
piece. Now I'm very familiar with chondrites but know little to nothing
about tektites. Can someone please tell me what I'm looking at here.

It's an odd piece. It appears to be metal embedded in the tektite in two
places. This is the only piece I have that exhibits this inclusion. Is
this a natural inclusion that formed after the tektite was formed or is
it just something stuck in the tektite???

The piece is about 34 grams... http://www.meteoritesusa.com/tektites.htm

This is bugging me because I can't find any info on it and I'd like to
know if this is normal for a tektite or just some fluke oddity.

Eric

Sean,

Unsure of whether it is metal... it resembles metal, but is not
magnetic. I've tried using a small pick to remove it and even a
stainless steel wire brush and no luck. It's not soil of any kind.

I'll try to get some 10X magnification photos...

I have a bunch of tektites with those kinds of inclusions - but they
are all local material that has just gotten stuck in the weathered
surface of the tektite. I usually leave them in as it is an indicator
of the soil/material where the tektite was found.

Re: [meteorite-list] Tektite with metal?

2009-02-04 Thread Eric Wichman

Ted, Thanks for the input...

It looks metallic, and it's non-magnetic so I doubt it's iron. It's in
two places, the inclusion in the tip end of the tektite is darker in
color which looks more like corrosion or tarnish. Using the pick on it
did nothing as it is embedded in the glass very securely. Also I don't
know how deeply it is embedded. It looks like it formed within the
dimple/cavity possibly after the formation of the tektite itself, but
I'm not sure.

I could send it to you if you'd like to look at it...

Regards,
Eric

P.S. I might also have another stone you would want to take a look at
too. Email me off-list and I'll send you photos...

Ted Bunch wrote:

Yes, if it is metal, that would be important to science - few indications

2009-02-04 Thread Eric Wichman

Bob,

Nope! Not sure at all.. That's why I sent the email to the list, in the
hopes that you guys might know.

Metallic looking minerals in tektites just seem odd to me, and being as
this is my first experience with tektites I figured I'd inquire if this
were normal... Apparently it's not so normal. Regardless if it's metal
or a metallic looking mineral inclusion it is fascinating.

I've cleaned 6 kilos of this material (hundreds of pieces) over the last
few days and this is the only one that has this type of inclusion. I've
searched Google with no luck. I did read a short blurb about iron
spheroids being embedded in tektites but don't remember where I saw the
article, and these inclusions are certainly not spherical.

Bob King wrote:

Hi Eric,

material I've seen is brownish but it's rocky, not metallic.

Mineral and meteorite dealers aren't big retail stores. If you want to
use a coupon go to Walmart.
A sale is a sale is a sale. Discounts are made for a limited time for

AD posting rules on-list are generally followed by most.

I bet these same people who continue to whine about the ADs on list are

/Hi list,

/Though we all do at time respond to idiocy and hypocrisies with logic

comes to mind.

Trolls are all about drama and have NOTHING better to do than to create
controversy by being totally vulgar and inappropriate to topic for one
reason. To satisfy their incessant and pathetic obsession for attention

Mike,

In response to the below comment, I'd like to say I'll take those

I now have 52 localities in my collectiondo I own them? No.

Law is law and possession is 9/10 of it! And though human beings, moral
dogma and law are insignificant when compared to a hugely ancient
universe, it would be naive to think that you could not or should not
own anything of value regardless of how little time we are here.

According to your philosophy no one really owns anything, and countries,
nations, governments, businesses, and other legal entities, including
people don't really own their land, their house, their car, or the TV
sitting in their living room, but in fact it is owned by the cosmos
itself. I get the philosophy behind it but it isn't as powerful as
possession and a humans primal need for ownership of property.

Ownership of something is physical, natural, and inherent. It's not an
intangible philosophy.

Tell that to Russia, China, Iran, or Israel for that matter. Hell, tell
it to any of the countries on this planet including the US government.

The philosophy is right, in the end it really won't matter.

But today it does...

Eric

Hi Martin and list,

The Danish law (and others like it) are excellent examples of human
arrogance. No man or government ever owns a meteorite. We are
only temporary caretakers of these cosmic relics. The lifespan of
the most enduring Earthly government is but an eye blink on the

cosmic timeline. I always laugh when I consider the hubris of men,
and the concept of a government owning all meteorites that happen
to fall on a piece of land that the same government stole from someone
else is the height of human arrogance. Last time I checked, the
Danish (or anyone for that matter) were not the original inhabitants
of the land they now claim. Ownership of the Earth below our feet
or the rocks from the sky above is a privilege granted by the Goddess
of Chance - and nothing more. When the weak body of man or the flimsy
apparatus of the state crumbles into dust like the monuments of
Ozymandias, these 4+ billion year old relics will continue on with
their strange journey - regardless of what fool signs a piece of paper
and claims ownership.

I now have 52 localities in my collectiondo I own them? No.

I am just lucky enough that Fate placed them in my loving hands, so
I may look after them until it comes time for me to rejoin the stars.

Laws like these (that Martin mentioned) hurt everyone and benefit no one.

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Free Links... Take 2!

2009-01-08 Thread Eric Wichman

OK let's try this one more time.

Sorry for what seems like a double post. Last week I sent out a link to
the links directory page on Meteorites USA and offered free links for
any and all dealers and collectors who wanted them. However I moved the
directory while doing some tweaking on the site, and in the process lost
all the links in the database. I have since repopulated the list by hand
with everyone I think was already listed. This time there's a nightly
backup of the whole site so this mistake won't happen again.

So, if your not in the directory post your link here:

[meteorite-list] Curious stones?

2009-01-07 Thread Eric Wichman

Hey all,

This is not a is this a meteorite? question

I've been going through cleaning out some boxes of NWA XXX meteorites
and I found some meteorites I forgot I had. All these stones are very
highly magenetic and snap hard to a neo mag.

PHOTOS: http://www.meteoritesusa.com/odd-stones.htm

The two broken and sliced pieces appear to be mesosiderite, and I have 5
other pieces that are 100% positive to be meso from this batch that I
have sliced and or sanded.

Anyone have any information on these pieces or seen any other meteorites
like them? Send me a link, information or photos if you do...The odd
part about the sliced and broken pieces are the hollow interiors of some
of the stones. I have reservations on some of these pieces about their
meteoric origin but there are some in this batch that are 100% mesosiderite.

What causes this? And if it's oxidation/corrosion why are they corroding
form the inside out?

Hi all I know this is sorta off topic but there is a glue that is used
to glue items to their packaging and it seems to hold pretty good but
all you have to do is pull the product off and the glue just lets go
and does not stick permanently. You can also rub it right off the back
side too, or right off the packaging. (It is much like rubber) It is
like it holds the product it in place firmly but doesn't really stick
to the product. I know I see it all the time but I just can't remember
the last time I saw it used. Well I do plan to use it to hold
meteorites in place so this is not 100% off topic. I hope this make
enough sense that someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Links...

2009-01-01 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi all,

Happy 2009!

In the spirit of the new year I'm giving away links from my site.
Meteorites USA is ranked in the top 10% of all meteorite sites on the
web for a large number of keywords. Dealers need traffic to make sales
and move material in this bad economy. With slow sales and tight budgets
you guys might need some more traffic. So here it is...

If you own a website and want a link from a highly ranked site you can
add your website here: http://www.meteoritesusa.com/blog/meteorite-links/

[meteorite-list] Don't Change!

2008-12-26 Thread Eric Wichman
 experience it is
not easy to change something. Especially when it really doesn't need to
be changed. Ever since I got my first meteorite I've been hooked just
like many new meteorite enthusiasts are when they first get into the
field. The excitement of meteorites is universal and they become
extremely addicting to the small percentage of people who are fascinated
at first glance. Then you have your that's cool people who simply say
that's cool and never get into meteorites like we do. The point being
that the customer base is super small, the product supply is even
smaller and trying to make a be all website just doesn't work.

The only way to really change things is to help people, not change them.
It's about psychology, philosophy, statistics and it's cliche, but it's
true nonetheless. As a friend of mine recently told me, the way to
change is to Provide a difference.

If you provide a difference people both want and need the change will be
automatic.

Re: [meteorite-list] AD: How Bout A Meteorite Blog?

2008-12-12 Thread Eric Wichman

Really!? Oops...

Boy that was totally unexpected.

Maybe I shouldn't have asked it as a question. I wasn't asking whether I
should build a central meteorite blog for everyone to post lewd and
libelous statements and trash talk. Many people want their own website,
that's all I wanted to provide, and at a reasonable price. If people
can't refrain from posting negative content and comments on a blog just
to discredit some people or bad mouth others then you are right, the
meteorite industry needs no blogs.

Guess we're back to Static HTML based websites with no dynamic content,
lazy pages, and cold hard text that never changes. Woohoo! Sounds
exciting! Oh yeah, and it's about people who don't want to change. It's
all about timing. My timing is obviously off on this one.

The world is blogging and here's my prediction:

Meteorite Blogs WILL be popping up in the near future.
Nothing will be able to stop people from posting trash talk. People will
do it regardless. (Press [Delete Comment]. Ban IP... Like Duh!)

People will learn how powerful a marketing tool a blog really is.
People will realize the search engines LOVE blogs.
People will realize that blogs are websites too. lol
Everyone will have a blog!

Either way I'll admit that maybe this was a BAD IDEA or BAD TIMING! For
now...

:D lol oops...

Thanks everyone for their input. I do appreciate it. It seems people
don't want a blog.

[meteorite-list] AD: How Bout A Meteorite Blog?

2008-12-11 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi All,

List members and many meteorite friends have have asked me if I could
help them build a website like mine. Usually I get asked how much I
would charge for a complete meteorite website including web and image
hosting. After building a number of meteorite websites for some of you
guys it gave me an idea.

Instead of charging normal prices well in excess of $300 to $500 for a
complete e-commerce website and shopping cart system with all the bells
and whistles, I wanted to find a way to build and host one for all
meteorite people and Met List members less than $5 per month.

Most people that inquired really wanted just a simple website that they
can manage themselves and one that is easy to update, change pages, add
photos etc. That seems to be the most people really want for their sites
anyway. So I found something, and after some tinkering and figuring this
is what I came up with.

Let me know what you think and be sure to contact me if you have any
questions.

or just plain want to yell at me I do want to hear back from you guys on
this. Contact me Off-List or on list... doesn't matter, I'll answer any
questions you have.
