[meteorite-list] Cleaning stony meteorites

2012-01-04 Thread Floyd Griff Griffith

Hello all and good day

I have some uNWA’s that have rust or a rust color in the crust. This is not
fresh crust.
I would like to remove the rust and or rust color from the surface of these
meteorites.
I have also read a post that stated there is a chemical way to the original
crust?

Any help would be appreciated.
I am familiar with working on meteorites as far a cutting, polishing and
etching.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am confused. A somewhat normal state for me.
Adam,
From your post it sounds as if this is man made.
If so, I missed that part.
Is Shirokovsky man made?

I can't believe anybody would reward these fraudsters by purchasing this
fake garbage. A lot of collectors lost thousands of dollars on this
material that probable cost 40 cents a kilogram to produce.

Adam

Oh Adam,
Did You never lost money on fake meteorite, dishonest seller or lunar that
become a earth rock ? Did You never buy Putorano only becouse it looks
fantastic ? I know many persons was dissapointed, but this not change fact
that this material is nice, strange and mysterious and its part of
meteorite history. Anyone who buy it know, its a fake. Their choice.
I love my 1mm thin transparent slice of Shiro same as my 2mm Brahin or

And in the name of science :), even if its very late here, I etched one

[meteorite-list] Lookout Tucson -- Anne Black is on her way

2011-01-24 Thread Floyd Griff Griffith

Hello and good day,

Anne Black is on her way.
I helped Anne load up her inventory for the show this morning.
She needed to get a bigger vehicle this year to carry all her stuff.
What a joy seeing just a few of the items she is taking to Tucson.
I actually got to see and hold the Sikhote-Alin tree section she will have
in her room.
She also has quite a few books. Please buy them so I don't have to unload
them when she gets back to Denver, Colorado.
As most of you know, she shares a room with Geoff N. at the old Inns Suite.
I sure wish I could see it this year. I'll bet it will be better then ever.

Have a great show.
Best to you,

The November Meteorite Magazine issue
should be in your mail boxes very soon if it has not already
arrived. You can expect it shortly. I'm sorry
for the delay. We picked up production mid-stride, but
put together what I think is a nice issue with great
articles. I deeply appreciate everyone who helped us
to make this happen. February should be back to
arriving on time. Someone mentioned not having gotten
prior issues in their subscription. The only one that
should be late is November. If you have had other
subscription problems, these will involve issues prior to
our presence. Please let us know, either through the
web site at meteoritemag.uark.edu, or by contacting Hazel
directly at met...@uark.edu
(Hazel can help you with business, back issues, or
subscription questions.)
For articles, content questions, or article submissions,
you can contact the editors, Derek Sears or myself, at meted...@uark.edu
Thank you all for your support of this great
magazine. It is an honor and a joy to be working with
all of you to keep this magazine going and growing.
This is meant to be a magazine for the entire meteorite
community, collectors, dealers, hunters, scholars, educators
and everyone else, and we are happy to have your comments
and participation.

Hello list.I knew someday this day would come.I am hanging it up as a
meteorite

collecter and a very bad met hunter. After 12 years I am leaving meteorites
with my head held high.I will be leaving alot of great friends and a hand
full
of assholes, but better with alot than the latter.I have sold off my entire
main
collection. That is the collection where I had at home.I'll continue to
have my

private primary collection put away,so I'll be into meteorites.I have also
closed my website.I will also be unsubscribing from the met list next
month.So
I will pass away into the night without a whimper.I'll miss everyone, but I
look
forward to enjoying my life with my wife and now happily again being DEBT
free

which is a great feeling.Also I'll miss giving away freebies,but I really
enjoyed those times.I hope all who benefitted from those were happy as
well.Well
there is not much more to say.I wished I could have found some of those
new

stones last weekend.The lord

is pointing me into a new phase of my life so I
look with determination as to what will be like.Good luck to everyone and
I hope
you all find the finds of a lifetime. It has been a hell of a ride.Good
luck and

god bless to everyone. This time it's for

Re: [meteorite-list] Looking for canyon diablo strewn field map

2009-05-10 Thread Floyd Griff Griffith

Very good info Alex, thank you.

I am thinking that there must be a viable search area that is not a part of
the Barringer land or the BLM land.

I have scouted the area and talked to the sheriff in Flagstaff, AZ.
The sheriff basically said that anyone hunting for meteorites in any areas
around the above lands will be arrested.
One will need written proof that they have permission from the land owner
where they are hunting.
I know this sounds rather wimpy but, as a member of the IMCA, I can't hunt
the Diablo area illegally.

So, I am attempting to find a legal way to hunt.
There must be a way.

Best to all and thanks for the help.

Hello again,

Does anyone out there know of a journal article where the 80 degree
angle

is
discussed, with the rationale behind proposing this value for the
trajectory angle?

D.J. Roddy and E.M. Shoemaker (1995) Meteor Crater: Summary
of impact conditions (Meteoritics 30-5, 1995, A567, excerpts):

Since the late 1950s, studies of this crater have presented an
increasingly
clearer view of this impact and its effects and have provided an improved
view of impact cratering in general. To expand on this dataset, we are
preparing an upgraded summary on the Meteor Crater event ... including
inormation and interpretations on (1)...(2)...(3) estimated speed,
trajectory,
angle of impact, ... the trajectory of the impacting body is interpreted
by
EMS (= E.M. Shoemaker) as traveling north-northwest at a relatively
low impact angle...

I don't know whether E.M. Shoemaker still had time enough to publish
this upgraded summary before his tragic accident in Australia.

Best Sunday
wishes to all,

Bernd

Open note to Bob Evens,

Some time ago I purchased a piece of NWA 1950 from you.
Then when it hit the fan for you, I emailed a request for authenticity from
you. Actually I sent several emails.
Not one response. How can someone buy with confidence from you if you are
unwilling (or unable) to show authenticity of the items you sell. The lunar,
NWA 1950 is now worthless to me or anyone. It is nothing more then a speck
of dirt.
Why would you think that anyone in this group would buy from you. You do not
seem to even want to work it out.

You revert to name calling. That always helps.

It seems that a certain member in bad standing that continues to want to

not returning money to them after promising to do so and also
misrepresenting meteorite types as something rare when they are not. A
number of these victims wrote to me to thank me for posting my first

Here are a few of the list archives indicating there are serious problems

I must warn the list of Bob Evans as well. I was supposed to receive a
$125 refund from Bob over a month ago and I still have not received my
money back, nor have I recieved a response from him after several email
and phone call attempts. Well, I checked his Ebay history a few days ago
and noticed that he had placed a $1500 bid on a meteorite not too long
ago, yet he cannot afford to return my hard-earned money back to me?
Never again! I warn everyone else not to do any business with Bob Evans.
His unprofessionalism is a joke.

Ryan

Well, Bob Evans just called me after reading my email to the list and he
was pissed-off as I had expected he would be.. nearly shouting at me
through the phone line. It doesn't look like I wil be getting a penny
back from him, so it looks like I'll have to use alternate routes to get
my money back. Sorry to everyone else who has to read this, but his
reaction to the situation is unacceptable. By the way BobI'm 22 years
old, not 15 as you had asked me during our brief phone altercation this
evening. See you in Tucson next year... I'm sure everyone will be giving
you a warm welcome.

On June 24, 2006 I posted to the list as a courtesy that I had been the
victim of a fraudulent trade with Bob Evans. This is the rest of the
story...

After a year of trying to resolve the issue, it took me many more months
to conclude that he just wasn't going to respond.

I sent emails, Ebay emails, registered letters and confirmed delivery
letters, with no response from Mr. Evans. He had my piece and he wasn't
going to finish the trade.

I sued Bob Evans in Williamson County, Texas Court. It went to court on
October 19, 2006. Small CLaims suit #060094. He apparently tried to avoid
being served his lawsuit by the Will County Sheriff, but they served him
successfully. He did not respond to the suit, nor did he show in court.

Hi again list.I now can officially say,THE END!The freebies
I have given away over the last 5 years have now come to a
complete end. There is no more to give.I want to thank
everyone who chimed in over the last 5 years.I hope I have
made your collections,museum's and other local's a
better place for scientific study or just for pure
delight. It has been my pleasure to do this. Some of you have
complained because I have done this. But then again, only less
than 1% versus the 99% who has liked what I've done.I
also want to publicly thank those who have returned kindness
to me by giving me freebies. It is muched appreciated.I have
gotten a few sikote-alin's which now has totalled 6.2

2007 was my tenth year as a member of this great forum. THANK YOU TO

Hats off also to Paul and Jim of Meteorite Times, Michael Johnson for
Rocks from Space Picture of the Day, Larry and Nancy Lebofsky and the

thank you to my friend Steve Brenham Arnold for inviting me along on

Secondly, the new IMCA Treasurer comes up with another brilliant idea.
Jim was greatly respected in Oro Valley (in addition to his meteorite

I never knew Jim Kriegh (my loss, from what I hear of him) so I have no

Hello Everyone,

I am proud to annouce I now have the 2007 Brenham Meteorite Coin in
stock. Those that preordered the coin will get an e-mail shortly. As
this coin was my suggestion, and since I was able to use a Kansas
meteorite, this one is my favorite in the series.

The 2007 $5 Cook Islands Brenham Meteorite Coin measures 38.61 mm.and
weighs 25 grams. The coin is .925 % silver and is partially palladium
plated. The palladium, which cost more then silver, gives the sky a neat
effect. The coin is self has a face value of $5.00 backed by the
Government of the New Zealand, Cook Islands. As this is a commonwealth
country, the back of the coin has Queen Elizabeth.

Front of coin:

Back of coin:
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s17/ksmeteoriteguy/Other/22780_Brenham_Pallasite_Meteorite_r.jpg

The cost of each coin is $65.00 each. If you did not preorder the coin
and would like one, e-mail right away.

Like the last couple coins I have been a part of, each one is certified
by me, so if you want I can sign the certificate if you desire.

Also, coin four is in the planning stages. I can't say much about that
now but keep an eye out for more news.

Clear Skies,

This week I added 3 new spheres to my collection and I plan to do a huge
web site update Friday.

But I had to show this beauty off now.

One failed attempt and a lot of work went into this sphere and the whole
process was quite stressful but the end result made it all worth while.

It's 50mm in diameter and weighs 533 grams

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/BobaDebt/Meteorites/SPUruacu.jpg

The etch doesn't have a lot of contrast but if it's like my Campo it
should darken with age. However, this material is all about the inclusions
and this sphere is loaded with them.

please let me know if you pick up any large omissions or any errors.

I'd also like to make a big thanks to John Kashuba for providing some
great

pics including an Allende DI in both a normal specimen photo and a
subsequent thin section image taken later after sectioning. Thanks again

It's often thought that these inclusions might represent other groups of

Hello and good day David Deyarmin,

Wow, that 120 g Uruacu (IAB) is fantastic.
Thanks.
I do have a question.
The cut on the Uruacu. You said it was not polished.
The cut you got almost looks polished.
By that I mean, it's smooth to the touch.
When I cut, I can see and feel the saw blade marks.
When I got this Uruacu, I can't feel and I can barely see the saw marks.
This will take no time to polish.

visited the museum and collected some bricks and glass fragments.

Anyway, they are nice to have as a collectors item, though not impossible
to get. Get up there if you can and just grab as much as you like. No
worries, it's not as hard as hunting for meteorites.

Best,
Jan

Hello Members,

While you were all enjoying your weekend, I have been working!

I completely updated my Catalog, removed all the sold pieces, and added a
bunch of new ones, from Axtell
to Estherville (with a huge olivine crystal), the last 2 small slices of
Fairfield, and some spectacular Imilac pieces. I still have a few more
pieces to

add in the next few days, I hope.

And, speaking of Imilac, I have also added a new page to show-case two
spectacular pieces, a whole, complete uncut mass of Imilac, the largest I
know on

the market, 2375 grams, with sparkling crystals, and a whole oriented
Chiang-Khan, maybe the largest one too. Go take a look:

Enjoy! And let me know what you think of them.

Hello list,
I just heard that Greensburg was the site of a tornado that killed at
least 7, I know that Don Stimpson, a meteorite hunter and dealer, lives
near there. I have not heard from him since. I was wondering if anyone
knows if he and his family is alright?

here are a couple articles on the tornado and devistation.

Hello and good day,

Well the obvious question. Did anyone see the fireball this morning, around
7:00am? From what the new stated, it basically went over Denver, CO. USA.
I just heard about it on KOA radio.
Does anyone have a path or any info?

Jeff, Jim, tett and List,

Thanks for sharing. I particularly like the compound chondrules. And, of
course, the Kapoeta Howardite is great. I took a few compound chondrule
pictures and put them here - there are two pages:

And here's Great Sand Sea 010 Howardite.
