Available here is a very rare specimen of the Uwet meteorite. Supposedly a witnessed fall in 1825, it was venerated as a source of prosperity by the locals for decades. It was removed temporarily by English colonists in 1903 and sent to the British Museum. As the story goes, the town of Uwet subsequently fell into devastation amidst a Smallpox plague. The locals attributed this to the removal of the meteorite, and the town is said to have prospered ever since it was returned. Less than half the 55kg mass currently resides in the village, with another ~28kg spread out over various institutions, the bulk of this in Heidelberg. This specimen originated from a larger portion sold by Eric Twelker. Afterwards reduced by Russ Kempton. Now weighing 12.86g. It has a small inclusion and also displays an array of prismatic rhabdites which are a characteristic of Uwet. Asking 770$ with shipping included Please inquire for photo. Cheers, John A. Please read the note that I received from his son Jim: Ronald N. Hartman passed away on August 30, 2011, after a brief illness. He was a Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Planetarium at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California for 38 years and was well-known in the community of meteorite collectors and hunters. His passion for meteorites was kindled when he studied astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles under the renowned meteoriticist Frederick C. Leonard, a founder of the Meteoritical Society. He worked at Griffith Observatory giving public lectures in the 1960s and began investigating California dry lakes for the presence of meteorites. He discovered the Lucerne Dry Lake strewn field in 1963 and returned to that site in 1999 to find more of the illusive little black rocks from space. Throughout his career he continued to hunt for meteorites, first at Meteor Crater, Arizona (when it was legal) and Odessa, Texas. He found, traded, bought, cut and sold meteorites as well as tektites and shatter cones and built up a large collection, part of which is displayed at the Mt. San Antonio College Planetarium and library. In 2005 he founded R. N. Hartman, Inc., a company that manufactures, assembles and distributes membrane suspension boxes worldwide. He held a B.A. in Astronomy and a B.A. in Cinematography from the University of California, Los Angeles and an M.A. in Education from California State University at Los Angeles. Ron loved astronomy, he loved teaching and he loved sharing the wonders of the night sky with his students at star parties. He continued teaching even after he retired in 2005. He was fascinated by archeoastronomy and traveled to Egypt to study astronomical alignments in ancient monuments. He was active in the Pacific Planetarium Association and the International Planetarium Society. He served as an editor of the Planetarian Magazine from 1978 – 1981. In 1984 he received the ISP Service Award, the ISP ’s most prestigious honor. Ron was the oldest son of Albert and Evelyn Hartman. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 23, 1935, and moved to California at the age of 10. In 1965 he married Petrea Nelson of Reno, Nevada. He is survived by his wife and two sons, James and Rick Hartman, his brother Chris Hartman, a nephew Christopher Hartman and niece Laurel Meable. If you would like to know more about Ron, please go read the Field Report he wrote for us several years ago: _http://imca.cc/old_site/metinfo/metadventures/LDL.html_ (http://imca.cc/old_site/metinfo/metadventures/LDL.html) And I am sure we will talk a lot more about Ron in the coming weeks. HIV aids is the single leading cause of death for people 18 to 45. Second on the list is Automobile accidents. the third leading cause is suicide. deaths from firearms including suicides doesn't even make the top 20. the most common object for murder is blunt objects like hammers, pipes, rocks etc. if you do a deep search in the CDC you will find death by asteroid as being in the top 5 of possible near extinction events. The information keeps changing each time things are updated. I know a lot of people find firearms disturbing but they are only a tool. Guns don't kill people, its the person pulling the trigger. I hunt using rifles and pistols. I support the NRA, I have been in both the military and Law enforcement and have been a small arms trainer for SRT MOUT operations as well as an SRT team leader. Firearms can be fun and exciting, punching holes in targets over 1000 meters is a challenge. Try hitting the bottom of a loaded shotgun shell at distances over 500 meters. I find getting into my truck every day a lot more dangerous than any gun I own. Most suicides are done with a piece of rope. should we control rope? Enough said, I think it is time to just agree that we disagree. and move on to other topics. Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Photography (Must read!)
this photos its to much darkness, you have use to much the lens closed with the f22 and depend many from what type of light you use. This is some photos I have take to my pieces http://i46.tinypic.com/vg1n5v.jpg http://i50.tinypic.com/zmkxo1.jpg http://i48.tinypic.com/2e32yz5.jpg http://i50.tinypic.com/2hn43nt.jpg http://i50.tinypic.com/11b2fdj.jpg http://i47.tinypic.com/5zkv20.jpg http://i45.tinypic.com/6p4ydd.jpg http://i45.tinypic.com/2a50t0.jpg with f10 with my ex camera Canon 40D. Matteo I'd like to share some photography tips with list members that might help with photographing your meteorites. The first thing I would like to share is a silver reflector. here are some pictures: - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/16/Photographing_a_model_1.jpg/260px-Photographing_a_model_1.jpg - http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2673/3843207418_17bd3e73bf_m.jpg Mainly used in portrait photography but works great for meteorites. It is used to reflect soft light onto the subject(meteorite). I use it to fill in the shadows because sunlight can make highlights and shadows harsh. I have a 5-in-1 reflector made by promaster. They usually run about $35 because you are paying for 4 different reflectors and a diffusion screen. The second thing is custom white balancing. Have you ever taking pictures in the shade or inside and the picture came out way too yellow or too blue? This is because the auto-white balance on your camera didn't do so well. Many digital camera's(Most SLR's) have a custom white balance setting. Just simply hold up a white sheet of paper in the light you will be shooting in and take a picture of it. Then find custom white balance and select the picture you took of the paper. Now when you shoot in that light the picture will be properly white balanced. This is a life saver for Nikon shooters because Nikon has terrible auto white balance. The third thing is auto-blending. For those of you who have SLR's you will notice that shooting at a higher F-stop like F1.8 or F2.8 is a lot sharper than shooting at a lower F-stop like F22. The problem is, you might have to drop your F-stop to make sure the whole meteorite is in focus. Fortunately, photoshop can take a batch of photos, align them, and then blend the sharpest plains of focus into one picture. To do this set your camera on a tripod and set it to Av(aperature mode) spin the wheel to drop your F-stop to as low as you can get it. Some lenses only drop to F3.5 which is still fine. Then switch your lens to manual focus. Focus until just the front part of your meteorite is in focus and take a picture, then keep taking pictures as you change the focus in small increments. You should end up with 5 to 10 pictures with different parts of the meteorite in focus. Open photoshop and the go FileScriptsLoad Files into Stack... Select all of the photos and be sure to check the box that says Attem pt To Automatically Align Source Images. Select ok and let photoshop align the images. Then go under the tab Window and make sure Layers has a check next to it. The layers box should be on the right side of your screen. All the pictures will be listed under layers. Select them all. You can do this by holding ctrl key and clicking each one or click the first, then holding shift as you click the last. Once they are all selected go to the Edit tab and select Autoblend layers and choose to autblend them as a stack. Once it is done blending you need to click Save as and save it as a Jpeg because it will try to save it as something else. Then close out of the image in photo shop, if it asks you if you want to save click NO. Then you can open up the jpeg version you saved and edit it how you like (brightness/contrast etc..) or leave it as is. Here is an example i made with only 5 pictures blended: http://s38.photobucket.com/albums/e145/phxerik/?action=view¤t=blended.jpg The fourth thing is highlight tone priority. You can enable this in your custom functions for canon shooters. I know Nikon has the setting but I don't know what it's called. This setting will make sure that your picture's highlights will not be blown out. It also allows your processor to use all its bits. My camera's have 14bit processors but if Highlight tone priority is off the image only processes at 10 bits. When i use HTP and get the full 14bits, this allows my picture to smooth out the changes in light to dark in my photos. This makes everything shaded better, especially clouds! The fourth and last thing is HDR photography(High Dynamic Range). You do not need a SLR to do this. Most point and shoot cameras can do this too! Sometimes a picture can be too dark in one part and too light in another. If you take one picture over exposed, one under exposed, and one properly exposed and blend them together it will allow all parts of your picture to be properly exposed.

I am very shocked and sad, because Christian was not only a collector but a friend. Everybody know how much fun we had when we were togheter. We had also other private contact and were real friends. At first he told me that he cannot come to the Munich show , because he had so many private problems in his mind. Then he called me thursday evening when I was in Munich that he decided to come. So he was with us friday evening at the Fliegerbräu and stayed in Munich till sunday afternoon. He helped me to bring some of my material back into the car sunday afternoon. This was the last time I saw him. True friendship never ends.. It was originally put in place to limit Steve Arnold's (Chicago) postings, but it failed. Other dealers seemed happy enough to go along with it on their own out of, for lack of a better word, courtesy to other list members, who generally agreed that it was a good thing to do (at the time). It seems apparent now that most list members have no problem with dealers posting to the list as often as they wish, so it would appear as though the rule is no longer being advocated by either dealers or common list-users/readers. Thus the rule is, I would say, now null and void. For better or worse, so be it. But if you can't enforce it, and people won't follow it, it doesn't make much of a rule. And if a select few choose to go against it, it kind of screws over the other dealers who still abide by it, so I say to hell with it. We'll see what happens to the list...this could be interesting. Oh - and I'll have some ebay auctions up later tonight for those of you who may be interested - hopefully within the next hour, but it may take two to finish it all up. Not bad for the first historically recognized meteorite in the US. People interested in selling meteorites could learn a thing or two from Cottingham. While Farmer may have been the first(?) to the strewnfield, MC was the first to eBay and was getting 140 + per gram for West. That's good marketing if you ask me. It's interesting that this should pop up on the same day that I also received a package from Argentina. It possibly could have been from the same supplier. But my package was also tampered with, either by mechanical sources due to sorting or human influence, but whatever it was, it only managed to open half the package. Maybe the machine broke down or the human was interrupted. Either way, I did not lose anything. As for declarations, I don't sell, but from time to time, I give some away and I always put No Value and Mineral Specimen But for the first time, this package from Argentina had the full value and on the green declaration stamp it is written Rocks for study without commercial value - meteorites But the value was also included. 'Mineral specimen for research' is accurate and yet far less tempting to steal. Also I prefer not to declare the full value. When I have stuff sent to the Philippines I like a low value as again it reduces the risk of theft (although I have never experienced a problem). The main problem I have is that if a high value is declared then I have to pay import duties, and various other taxes and post office expenses that basically convert a bargain ebay purchase into very expense deal - almost to the point that it's not worth picking up, due to the expense. Oh my God, this is a very sad notice, I am very sad for this. My biggest condolences to Dorothy Matteo - Original Message - Da : impact...@aol.com A : meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com, carionminer...@wanadoo.fr Oggetto : [meteorite-list] Richard Norton Data : Wed, 27 May 2009 14:56:41 EDT Hello List-Members, Late last night I received a very sad email from Dorothy Norton. Richard Norton passed away last week, after a long illness. I had known fot quite some time that Richard was in poor health, still the news of his death came as a shock. Last time I called Dorothy, I heard piano playing in the background, Chopin and very good, I thought it was a CD playing or the radio, but Dorothy told me it was Richard, and we stopped a moment to listen, it was beautiful, I had no idea Richard was such a virtuoso. I had met Richard and Dorothy several years ago in Tucson, Thanks to Twink. I was very much a new comer then , and I found Richard to be bright, friendly, funny and so approchable. I still remember showing him a slice of Tafassasset, he looked at it with his loupe for quite a while, then told me that this meteorite left him speechless. Dorothy laughed, apparently Richard was rarely speechless. And now there is that great big hole in the middle of the Meteorite Community. Please read the obituary written by Dorothy and Joel Schiff:http://www.impactika.com/rnorton.doc I do know that Dorothy reads the List, so feel free to send her a message this way. Here in Italy a person type proud tom it has not had a long life, it would been taken a nice denounces for libel Matteo, Proud Tom is a little before my time, so I have only the vaguest idea of what this humor is-- but there have been lots of cases in the US, too, of people suing for libel over things posted on the internet. Here in the US, somebody can sue just about anyone for just about anything-- they may not WIN that law suit, but they can still file it, and cause the person a heap of emotional and finincial harm defending themselves. For instance, if someone concidered something said by Proud Tom about them (I think I get the idea that Proud Tom parodies list members) then that person can sue Michael Blood in an attempt to get the name of Proud Tom. They might not WIN that lawsuit and make him be required to turn over the name, but he would still have the hassle and expense of hiring defense lawyers and showing up in court. And if they DID win the lawsuit and get Proud Tom's identity and sue him, the courts might decide that the parodies are protected speech and thus not libel, or they might find that it is harmful defamation. Either way, again, Proud Tom would have the expense and hassle of defending himself. The Tucson show is coming in few weeks and all the dealers who have the chance to be in Tucson will have the apportunity to see and own some of this new fall then an end would be put to all these bad impressions about it..Anyone who is interested in this new fall shouldnt hesitate to buy and own some of this stuff since the big part of the fall is in the deep ocean.. cheers Said Haddany __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list M come Meteorite Meteoriti i...@mcomemeteorite.it http://www.mcomemeteorite.it http://www.mcomemeteorite.info Mindat Gallery http://www.mindat.org/gallery-5018.html __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

He and Sonny have been hunting for pieces of the new Canadian fall. He said that about 90% of the strewnfield is impossible to hunt as Alan Hildebrand has secured it for his teams to hunt. McCartney also mentioned that people from all around the area are hunting on private property without permission. Most of that might be over as some light snow has fallen making searching quite difficult. The good news is they were able to get permission to hunt on some private property and have found a few smaller pieces. They would like to offer them up to Canadian residents only as they would need permission to export them out of the country. So if you live in Canada and would like to purchase one they have three pieces weighing 10-25 grams. The selling price is $50 per gram. They will be leaving within 12 hours so if you are interested in buying one please email McCartney ASAP so he can ship them before he leaves the country. He will have access to the internet later tonight so please email him your request. He showed 10 quartz crystals that he found at the place of the meteorites crash. Several of the crystals have holes in between, so they can be united in a chain. What could this chain serve for? Besides, some crystals have strange drawings on them. We dont have any technologies that can print such kind of drawings on crystal. We also found ferrum silicate that can not be produced anywhere but in the space, - the scientist states. The meteorites crash took place long time ago, in summer of 1908. An enormous volcanic ball rushed over the sky with terrifying wallop and thunder-like sound. All the citizens were frightened to death and scared to move out of their houses. A flight of a flamy alien ended up in an hour in deserted taiga area. In a matter of seconds an explosive wave spread for 40 kilometers, devastating everything living around. It was not until many years later that a Siberian scientist set up an expedition to place of the meteorites crash. They searched carefully through the river banks and found there unusual quartz boards. Mr. Lavbin states that such solid stones do not exist in the Earth. He said about the experiment that was taken on the crystals: scientists tried to put some of the same drawing that were on the stones initially with a laser machine. How surprised they were to realize that the laser (that usually cuts metal objects into pieces) managed to put just some faint stripes. The stones though have an entire system of different lines and circles on them. Scientists suppose that the stones used to be a part of the navigational system of a spaceship. All stones united form a map, which they used to cruise through the Universe. In 1908 the UFO is thought to be hit by the meteorite that weighed 1 billion tones. If the meteorite fell down on the Earth, all the people would have been dead. But the aliens interfered and put their lives to save our land. A strange portrait of a strange person on one of the stones proves this hypothesis. Isnt it the pilot that once put his life for the sake of our future life? __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
