Nothing has been found where the radar data said it might be. Torvald and Donavan have left the zone replaced by Stephen Thompson out of Fredricksburg TX who is an expert on Sonic Boom characteristics. I've been lucky enough to get some media attention to try to motivate the public to assist here is today's interview on TV. This is the 5 TV interview I've given since arriving. http://dfw.cbslocal.com/video/6713580-meteor-hunters-scouring-north-texas/ We spent the day interviewing more witnesses compiling and extending the range of sonic boom farther to the east to include Wills Point, and southern Lake Tawakanii. We'll do some field samplings tomorrow east of 19. Also as a warning. I've heard from a local that the landowner who owns the land in the north where the upper radar blip is, has gotten very hostile to all outsiders. The local warned me to tell everyone to stay off that property. He thinks the landowner may shoot to wound or maim. So I'd like everyone to take that threat to heart. At this point, we have two new important observations and think the strewnfield to be east of 19 now. At this point, there have been no Z sightings, but the Black Panther remains a constant threat. 5 dogs were killed. Also, the park rangers at the state park warned us that a mountain lion has been spotted in the area. Some sonic boom activity has been traced back to some individual using some kind of reactive explosive that detonates when shot by a bullet. The local police has informed us this has been a bit of a problem for weeks. [meteorite-list] Report from the Strewnfield in Edgewood Texas
I seem to be the first boots on the ground at the strewnfield. No stones have been found, but the locals heard the sonic boom. Sonic blast focus is here, Doppler best guess is here. I'm sharing information because I've given it great thought, and am convinced that my best interest are served if competing teams share find information. I plan to write a paper covering this aspect in game theory as it is a interesting n-person, non zero sum game where cooperation (on meteorite locations) serves everyone's interest. Best guess on Strewnfield : East of Edgewood before you get to HWY 19. More info - ask me when you get here. Terrain: Mostly Ranch land, local grass is just greening up. Most ground is excellent rated at 70-100% visibility on my Taylor score. Rain was light in this area yesterday. Locals: Friendly but generally poor, some are extremely resistant to visitors. Give those wide berth as this is Meth Lab country and it is a real big problem here. Housing: Best base is south in Canton. I'd recommend the Best Western as they have nice rooms for $80 with a fridge and breakfast. I'll be here, come join the fray. A motel 6 and a Days Inn are also here. I think the Motel 6 will be noisy as it is RIGHT next to the highway. Food: Several options, Lumber Yard cafe in Edgewood, several others and more 10 miles away in Canton. Dangers: See comment on Meth Labs above. Add to it feral hogs, the local population exploded out here and they are aggressive. We've been told we should pack a pistol twice today. There has also been attacks by a black panther here that has the locals skittish. I've heard reports from hairy toothless rednecks and from a sweet little old lady. The panther has killed several sheep and goats, and rumors persist it may be responsible for missing persons reports. And of course, there is always the Z problem. Fun: We've found a trapper who trapped a couple of feral hogs, my team wants to buy one for a pig roast party this weekend. If you are out here, do you want to come? ps. I've created a stone meteorite identification video of good quality. With the success of Meteorite Men, the universities, labs, and some dealers including me are suddenly receiving a big influx of meteorwrong submissions. I wanted to create a video of instruction that any of us could redirect the submitters to. Hopefully, the video will convince 3/4 that they don't have a meteorite, and they don't get mad at us for dashing their $1,000,000 hope. Even if we can filter out 50% of the submitters, the community is way ahead in avoiding lost time. I am working on two different video projects about meteorites. The first is Serious the second is FUN. Dealers - I am wanting to casually interview any and all meteorite dealers I can and ask some simple questions: 1. What makes collecting meteorites interesting or exciting? 2. What do you recommend new collectors think about or buy? 3. What path or mentality should collectors follow as they grow as collectors? (I will include websites on the video to any Dealer I'll interview, to help draw traffic to you) Collectors - 1. Why is collecting meteorites fun? 2. What is your favorite specimen? Also, I will need to receive a release from anyone I interview, so I can use the video I shoot. The release is either verbal permission to use the interview video or written permission. I'll bring the release with me. The first video is going to be a pro-meteorite collecting documentary short that will raise awareness for meteorite collecting. The Second video is going to be a playful Spoof mockumentary, intended to be released on Youtube on April Fools or embedded as a secret Easter egg on a DVD project I have cooking. Essentially, anyone who agrees to participate will be asked a single question and you must respond with a complete dead-pan serious manner. No cracking up, laughing, or smiling. [meteorite-list] Buzzard Coulee Permitting Snafu
Sonny and I were at Buzzard Coulée the week it fell, as you all know. We recovered a good number of stones before the big snow hit. Permits were then applied for. I returned as the snow melted in April. I alone recovered hundreds of stones, giving half to the landowner, I still had over 2kg. These post winter stones were submitted for exportation as well. The Export Tribunal repeatedly delayed export and lumped the early permit with the later permit, then delayed both again and lumped those permit apps with other export apps from other hunters. Finally, the Tribunal noted that there was a good deal of material so the very late permit apps are apparently getting approved with no hold-back delays. Hence, Geoff Notkin and others have received their stones. Ya, ya, I know it is not fair, but that's how the cookie crumbles. As best I can tell, my stones will be arriving in March 2010. I recovered many that have orientation, most complete individuals 10-30g, and a few 50,100, 150 g stones. They will be available on www.outofabluesky.com at that time. [meteorite-list] Tahoka and Met-Bul listings via Ted Bunch
Fear not, Pete. I recovered the Tahoka from a farmer who found it hoeing. If you search google, you'll find my field trip report on it. It was submited to NAU via Ted Bunch along with many other of my meteorite finds. However, several years have passed and the only meteorite that has made the Met-Bul is Dumont that I submitted via UCLA. So according to Ted Bunch, he submitted the paperwork to the system and someone upstream of him has done nothing with it. I believe it is not just me, ask Mike Farmer about this as well. At this point, I consider the Ted Bunch submission channel systemically broken. Not his fault, mind you. So I am at a quandary as to whether I should re-submit all my finds again for the last 7 years and to whom I should submit them too. Second, the whole defies the ratio for a explosive impact of 10:1. Even if it was perfect, you have to have a supersonic entry to make it thus the neighbors would here a massive bang. So the hole is not a crater. However, if the object was dug out, it would explain the incongruencies. If anyone has a collection of Nininger letters, I'm requesting a search for the one regarding the Newport meteorite. Just after the Paragould fall, the media frenzy alerted some farmer to check the iron rock he plowed up. The farmer contacted Nininger, I suspect, via mail. I've been to Newport dozens of times on social visits, and have tried to find clues where this damn this is. The old folks at the retirement home only remember one was found. I'm going to be stuck in Newport again over Christmas, and desperately want a lead that I can start researching. Having a bit of a problem on some etch jobs and having to re-etch a few specimens. How do you rinse/neutralize your ferric after the etch? I'm getting remnant staining and sometimes corrosion. This piece is an important clue on potential cosmic velocity residual at ground level. I encourage Matt to have this piece X-rayed in a lab (or in a doctors office - any Doc's out there with ideas?) to determine the depth of the penetration. Likely a Doc would get a kick out of this and do it in a couple of hours. 1. We know the height of trees are between 0-10 meters. 2. We know the incoming angle +/- 20 degrees from the famous painting. 3. We have an idea of the speed of a bullet hitting trees and their penetration. 4. After I received word that the snow was melting I immediately flew up to Canada to continue the recovery effort. I pushed hard each day to get the most out of each day. I averaged 25-30 finds per day. However, I pushed myself too hard and within 4 days I developed a cough and fever. I laid low for a few days and my fever rose and eventually I had to go to the hospital for help. After some antibiotics to fight some kind of strep, 3 days later I was drugged enough to continue my efforts after losing a week. I broke the 4 kg mark, and walked away with 2 kg after paying the landowner his half. These will be for sale in a few months once the export permit comes. Several are oriented. Contact me. After my return, my cough got worse and I have been treated for it for 4 months. [meteorite-list] Stovepiping
Someone emailed me about my use of the word stovepipe. What is it, etc... Well, I may or may not have seen it in official meteoriticist vocabulary but I do think it is a useful word in meteorites. In general, Stovepiping refers any feature that sticks up like a flue pipe from a franklin stove. In the case of a meteorite, I use stovepiping to describe the feature on the leeside of a oriented meteorite. I posit that the melted rock may have congealed and cooled on the back side in a stovepipe fashion. [meteorite-list] Buzzard Coulee Expedition Photos from December
This is the first trip taken to Canada after the fall. Once there, we only had 2.25 days to hunt before shutdown snowfall occurred. It was -25 Celcius and the airline lost my luggage, so I'm wearing socks over my hands in some photos. I think I had thin gloves under the socks. At some point, I couldn't photo anymore as the batteries died of cold and our fingers hurt from exposure. Give me desert any day of the week. Most of the photos are in situ. No action, car chases, or things blowing up. I got a call from a West local who found 'dozens' of meteorites. I doubted it and asked for pictures. As expected, all were junk terrestrials...all but one. I then met him, he's an older gentleman and had stories of some of the rocks he found years ago and some he found after the fall. He swears up and down the one meteorite he found was in 1957. But I looked at it, then cut it open. Looks just like a Ash Creek inside and out. So I suspect he got confused as to when he found which stone. Does anyone see anything that makes you think this is not an Ash Creek? 225 grams. At the hunt in West, I searched the property across from Adair's place. Lori's place. The owners were getting irritated with hunters after a while, so I tried to sooth nerves and volunteered my services to help a bit of trouble on the property. On top of being an engineer, cartographer, and magician; I'm also a beekeeper. They had a feral hive in the abandoned camper near the ranch equipment and wanted it gone. Greg Hupe noticed this hive and told a few people. Anyway, I was back at West yet again last week, as the Last Man Standing out there. The hunt was fruitful, while no Ash Creek was found, a new 225g stone came to light from another fall, but more on that later. Anyway, to pay the piper for our permission to hunt, I cut out the hive and transplanted it into one of my hive boxes. I think we, as a community, should make some kind of gentleman's agreement with the highest reward that should be offered. In this new piece, its like its a silver blob that melted and oozed out of the tiny gash in the stone. I'm disinclined now to a post fall chemical reaction. Do take note of the oxidation effect the rain had on the stone. Finally! The complete account of the Santa Lucia, Argentina meteorite is now out. This is the meteorite fall that occurred last year in January, 2008. This book covers the fall, the field work, the mapping of the strewnfield, addresses the new export law, and tries to do all of that woven around an entertaining story. Meteorite Magazine will have a review in an issue or two. After working on it for months, the monograph is finished. Its received an ISBN and a copy is submitted to the Library of Congress. Total 68 pages, 9x6, full of great color photos. Google has scanned a few teaser pages and will have them online in 6 weeks, I believe. For those interested, this will be the first of a series of monographs. Each monograph will cover an individual meteorite falls I've launched expeditions too. Again, for non-native English speakers, a monograph is simply a book which is very focused in scope. In this case, a single meteorite. This book is catered more toward institutions and hard core collectors, it is not a simple introductory text. I took great pain to NOT have a single equation in it; it hurt me to do that. I wish to throw in my research on galvanic cleaning to the list. I used the sites listed and also had the advantage of consulting a chemist. The targets were deport iron, specifically the ones found deep. For odd reasons, deports found shallow were stable, while deepers where not. The solution that worked best was the distilled water, 99% alcohol, and lye (sodium hydroxide?). Leave the irons to soak in that solution will only have a slight electrolytic effect. To really pull out chlorides, its best to wrap the irons in aluminum. The aluminum is converted fairly fast, so don't use foil. Better is to use old aluminum cans replacing when needed, they last longer. After 2 months, remove iron, wash in distilled, wash in 99% alcohol, then cook for several hours. I have a 5 kg Campo, some smaller Campos, and a couple of Sikhote-Alins that were rusting, flaking, or showing small relentless beads of moisture in spots no matter what I tried to stop it. If there is an easy way to come to an end I'll take it, so I was determined to give this galvanic method a shot and I am delighted with the results! The largest Campo was covered in a red oxidized powder and orange spots all over, especially in the regmaglypts, - One Campo was flaking so badly that I could hear pieces falling off whenever I walked into the same room, - Smaller Campos with a few weeping and rusting spots, - two Sikhote-Alin shrapnel that had almost no rust but a dark material build-up where there were weeping spots, which I suspect was some type of oil. I also had a small broken-off piece of a badly rusted Branhin rusted so badly there was nothing to lose by trying. I used Arm and Hammer washing soda, cheap at Walmart, and distilled water. I also used heavy-duty aluminum foil to wrap the specimens, along with some additional chunks of high-quality aluminum thrown in, salvaged from old computer parts. Can any chemists advise if the extra would make a difference? When I cleaned the smaller ones I did all pieces at the same time. I used a microwave safe plastic tub (which I got at a dollar store) capable of handling the boiling water, and for after the galvanizing I used a variety of synthetic bristle brushes I got there, too, including a very useful denture toothbrush (superior to a regular toothbrush) for tight spots https://jawproducts.authsecure.com/images/denturebrushlarge_all.jpg A word of warning - don't use a brush you want to use for anything other than this - the bristles turn black, and I haven't discovered a way to clean them, yet. I am pleased to report that the results were absolutely brilliant! Beyond my expectations! I didn't even have to follow up with a steel bristle brush. All the Campos and S/A look nice and clean, with the black fusion crust looking fresh. There have been chats here about appreciation of patina, but for me active rust is something different. It's been just over a month, now, and I don't see any re-occurring signs of moisture droplets or rusting. Even the flaking seems to have ceased! The Branhin doesn't rust anymore, either, but as cautioned in the article I don't think it is a good idea to galvanize any pallasite. Yes, I can confirm the rumors that I have a meteorite book coming out soon. Its actually a monograph which is different than a book. For those non native English speakers, a monograph is a book extremely focused on a subject matter. In this case, its focused on just the Santa Lucia Meteorite Fall that occurred in January, 2008. I was fortunate to be the only field researcher there after the fall. The monograph contains my field notes, color pictures, stories, research, new Argentine law issues, and other items related to just this fall. 65 pages. This will be the first in a series of monographs covering meteorite falls and fines I've researched. That will include Tanzania, Deport, the new Canadian, etc... I was diligent in getting photos of stones in situ. The trick is to snap the picture before the cold snaps the battery dead. -20C does nasty things to battery chemistry. Note fusion crust looks 'wrong' with a light coating of ice that might be half sublimated. Also note, that only after 9 days on the ground, oxidation is already visible on some specimens. Spring stones should be noticeably different than winter stones. The hunting is over, 5-10 cm of snow is predicted tonight. More fell last night. Searching is all but impossible at this point. The weather has been abnormally snow free up till this week. We have had the luck of securing 5% of the strewnfield. We also had the luck of a really great landowner at that. We've had to forfeit a sizable portion of our finds to this land owner, who fully deserves it for his co-operation with us. In fact, he deputized us to police his property and kick off the plethora of trespassers that was rampant after the news aired locally. The stone looks like an H6, but I'm not qualified to make a call on that. I do know that we're seeing alot of secondary crust, so perhaps this thing blew high? Sonny spotted some veining in some of his stones. I've managed to mainly find fully crusted individuals. I want everyone to know, my luggage was lost coming into Canada. So I searched in -22 Celsius with the clothes on my back that I wore on the plane. If you think you are a meteorite hunter, you will know when you crawl on your hands and knees looking for pee sized meteorites in -22C. You'll either cut it, or go home. Me...I'm still here. The fall looks big. But after today, the material coming out is going to stop. Most of the material we saw recovered was stolen. It will be claimed 'roadway'. I even heard of some falling on crown lands 10 km away! Interviews done indicate 15 'pops' when the fireball blew. It was a hell of a show, I hear. One person recalled his tin roof sounding like it was hit by hail stones. My best guess on TKW is about 35kg of which 30kg is in the hands of the Mitchell family/Dr Hildebrand. The Mitchell have expressed no interest in selling. The few locals who have offered material for sell are asking so much I can't touch it. Its that bad. Today we were interviewed by Canadian Broadcasting. Sonny did well in expressing space enthusiasm, while I did a short stint on the science and ballistics of the fall. Then we took the camera guy hunting. To my stunned eyes, we stumbled on a meteorite while walking 20m forward to find a shoot spot. That was caught on film. (68grams) Then within 20m we found a tiny 2nd one. Frilling amazing. They made a wrap because they were freezing and left. What totally killed me, was when I went back to hunting, I noticed the camera guy had STEPPED on another meteorite, about 25g. LOL! Its total BS. The nearest crown land is sideways 10km. Not along the axis, simply the nearest crown land where someone who stole a rock off Ian Mitchell ranch could claim it and keep it. [meteorite-list] Need Help Destroying Earth - Who can suggest a good physics simulator?
OK, maybe not destroy earth. Just hurl things at it. I need a computer model throwing a rock at the atmosphere at 20,000 mph and have an airflow simulator model its breakup and fall pattern. Then do it over and over again 100,000 times to do a monte carlo analysis. The rock structure needs to be changeable, like highly veined incompetent rock, or competent Ni-Iron. Angle and speed needs to be a variable also. Model needs to accommodate friction and slag off. Although, we could cheat on this one and alter the rock structure to compensate. Main goal, is to plot the landing zone of a flying gravel pit incoming at 20,000 mph Any ideas where to start? There's probably a linux package that does something like this. However, the google searches I've done and SAL searches don't look promising. You'll have a problem. The CAD (county appraisal district) will only have the property info and the mailing addy of the person in question. Often that mailing addy is a PO box, so no crisscross phone # for you. You'll have to send a letter. Courthouse records including a plat map or the local title company may have a title plant which will also help you find the owner, but by far the CAD is the easiest and free way to go, as it is often online. My normal method, is I have to go to location anyway for recon so I simply stop at nearby ranches/farms and show up on doorsteps with a map in my hand. The map is important, as it disarms any distrust from folks, as everyone want to help the lost guy. [meteorite-list] Using GIS for Meteorite Hunting and Study
I, too, am a GIS person. Since Land ownership GIS has just been brought up, I have to take this one step farther and mention good free GIS packages. Someone just brought up ESRI as a GIS progam, and I would like to discourage people from using it. ESRI gives you piecemeal crippled software that you'll have to pay licenses for each piece you enable. While there base 'hook' product is free, you can quickly spend $2500 getting the 'Basic GIS' which is just decent GIS (ArcGIS $1500 and ArcView $950). Then the extensions can cost $12,500 to bring you up to a complete GIS system that gives you map webpublishing and db interoperability. All of that is about the same as what GRASS does, but its free. There are some excellent Open Source GIS programs currently available. You can download these for free and have them running within the hour. Quantum can quickly import your GPS data. Both of these run under Windows or Linux. Quantum GIS -- Young, small, and runs fast on old machines. Think of this as a 'dune buggy' of GIS. Use this one first, if you're new to GIS. http://qgis.org/ GRASS GIS -- Mature, stable, powerful, but very complex. Good for 3D and 4D plotting. Like if you wanted to plot a strewnfield thru a mountainous area then do a time lapse flyby. Think of this as a diesel MAC truck of GIS. http://grass.itc.it/ There are a couple of other Open Source GIS packages, but they are immature and not ready yet, IMHO. Draw polygons of area you are ALLOWED to search. Important to know where you can't go. 6. Plot points of where meteorites where found. High Confidence Data gets a special symbol. 7. Plot point of historically found meteorites that you have low confidence of where you think they were found. You could even draw small circle polygons to represent the 'fuzzy' find location. 8. Draw Line of best guess of upper limit of Main fall axis. 9. Draw line of best guess of lower limit of Main fall axis. Yes, there was a lawsuit against Bob Evans brought by me. It was in regards to a trade that was partially done, where I sent material and only received a partial trade, then Evans went quiet. No contact for many months. Eventually, I posted about it and received many replies that he has done this before. His modus operandi is usually to go quiet and not communicate. Which is what he's doing now. He did not show in court, I received a default judgment by the judge. Evans did not appeal and a judgment was issued. I spent the money to have the judgment filed in Illinois and a lien filed against his house. At this time he can not purchase or sell, or inherit real property until the judgment is paid. It is collecting 8% interest at this time. If I recall my contract law correctly, selling NWA junk as Zulu Queen would be 'Misrepresentation' as well as Unjust Enrichment. Selling Zulu Queen that he didn't know was NWA junk is simply 'Mutual Misunderstanding'. Good luck in proving he had prior knowledge it was NWA junk. This is a small sandbox we play in. Yes, Eduardo is correct. There is a new law in Argentina that makes all new FALLS and FINDS national property. Technically, it makes them 'cultural heritage artifacts'. This means they will fall under UNESCO laws and they can issue Interpol arrest warrants that are recognized by most countries. Argentina has a track record of aggressively hunting down fossil dealers who illegally export fossils which also are 'cultural heritage artifacts'. They have issued int'l warrants and nabbed fossil dealers. This is one country you don't want to cross. Do not confuse their ability to enforce a NATIONAL law with the ineffective Chaco provincial law that was supposed to stop Campos from leaving the province. I went to Santa Lucia last month to recover the January 24, 2008 fall. I had great success in recovering both material (2.23kg) and data (GPS and 1.25 hours of video) on the fall. What I didn't know was that in December 2007 a new law was passed. I've been in contact with the government to find a good solution the situation. They knew the law was new and that I likely didn't know about it. So far, the government has been quite resonable, and they care about meteorites and their conservation. I will likely return some of my material, for the greater good of the meteorite community with Argentina. As a member of IMCA, I believe I need to follow a very ethical path to benefit all who come after me. If the meteorite community behaves properly as new law is interpreted, we can influence the law to go the way of Canada or Australia and not down the path of the Dark Side like India. I have strongly suggested to them that they offer rewards on new falls, not just seize them like India. If we do this right, we may be allowed in on new falls working with the National Museum. If we do this wrong, meteorite collectors will become a plague to them and they will hunt us and arrest us in the future. The tablet is now known to be a contemporary Sumerian observation of an asteroid impact at Köfels, Austria and is published in a new book, 'A Sumerian Observation of the Köfels' Impact Event.' The giant landslide centred at Köfels in Austria is 500m thick and five kilometres in diameter and has long been a mystery since geologists first looked at it in the 19th century. The conclusion drawn by research in the middle 20th century was that it must be due to a very large meteor impact because of the evidence of crushing pressures and explosions. But this view lost favour as a much better understanding of impact sites developed in the late 20th century. In the case of Köfels there is no crater, so to modern eyes it does not look as an impact site should look. However, the evidence that puzzled the earlier researchers remains unexplained by the view that it is just another landslide. This new research by Alan Bond, Managing Director of Reaction Engines Ltd and Mark Hempsell, Senior Lecturer in Astronautics at Bristol University, brings the impact theory back into play. It centres on another 19th century mystery, a Cuneiform tablet in the British Museum collection No K8538 (known as the Planisphere). It was found by Henry Layard in the remains of the library in the Royal Place at Nineveh, and was made by an Assyrian scribe around 700 BC. It is an astronomical work as it has drawings of constellations on it and the text has known constellation names. It has attracted a lot of attention but in over a hundred years nobody has come up with a convincing explanation as to what it is. With modern computer programmes that can simulate trajectories and reconstruct the night sky thousands of years ago the researchers have established what the Planisphere tablet refers to. It is a copy of the night notebook of a Sumerian astronomer as he records the events in the sky before dawn on the 29 June 3123 BC (Julian calendar). Half the tablet records planet positions and cloud cover, the same as any other night, but the other half of the tablet records an object large enough for its shape to be noted even though it is still in space. The astronomers made an accurate note of its trajectory relative to the stars, which to an error better than one degree is consistent with an impact at Köfels. The observation suggests the asteroid is over a kilometre in diameter and the original orbit about the Sun was an Aten type, a class of asteroid that orbit close to the earth, that is resonant with the Earth's orbit. This trajectory explains why there is no crater at Köfels. The in coming angle was very low (six degrees) and means the asteroid clipped a mountain called Gamskogel above the town of Längenfeld, 11 kilometres from Köfels, and this caused the asteroid to explode before it reached its final impact point. As it travelled down the valley it became a fireball, around five kilometres in diameter (the size of the landslide). When it hit Köfels it created enormous pressures that pulverised the rock and caused the landslide but because it was no longer a solid object it did not create a classic impact crater. Mark Hempsell, discussing the Köfels event, said: Another conclusion can be made from the trajectory. The back plume from the explosion (the mushroom cloud) would be bent over the Mediterranean Sea re-entering the atmosphere over the Levant, Sinai, and Northern Egypt. The ground heating though very short would be enough to ignite any flammable material - including human hair and clothes. I've been told to cut the new fall in 99% alcohol. I've had my secretary calling the local grocery stores and drugstores for this stuff, but its not carried. I've been told Safeway carries it, but they're not in Austin. A local medical places has it for $16 per pint (ouch) which is excessive. Can someone give me suggestions for what type of businesses would carry it? Has anyone had success with using a vib lap? Leaving a chondrite in water for 3 days to polish sounds exceedingly foolish. With an iron, complete insanity. I've finishing a very interesting study on meteorite recovery which is heavily statistics oriented. However, I may have flaws in my assumptions and data sets. I recall that my college stat professor drilled into us, that when you have a serious stat problem, go find a real statistician. So hence the request. While I could easily tap into my local world-class university math department, I believe it would be best to tap a statistician who already understands the nature of meteorites. This is the official info release of a new iron. I identified this on a West Texas Trip in February 2005. It took a year of negotiating with the rancher before I got my paws on it. According to Dr Wasson - 16.2% Ni It belongs to the high-Ir, low-Au, low-Ni subset of group IVB. The other members of this subgroup are Iquique, Tlacotepec, Gallipoli[prov.] and Cape of Good Hope. [meteorite-list] Brenham Stabilized with vacuum treatment
As mentioned in previous emails, Brenham has been unfairly maligned. It does come out of a moist environment, and the current Brenhams being found have residual ground moisture in them. However, they can be easily stabilized with the use of a near perfect vacuum to remove moisture. Any iron is always in a fight against Oxy and water, the vacuum treatment will mitigate even the worst rusting issues. Returning it too space conditions. Following up with a sealant will arrest any corrosion. After my last posting, I've chosen to put my money where my mouth is. I've purchased a Arnold Brenham and have had it cut and stabilized using a vacuum chamber, corrosion inhibitor impregnation and finally an Opticon/epoxy sealant. These beautiful slices are full of olivine and will be available in my room at Inn Suites room 230 with Anne Black. As per my earlier post, I've stabilized a Brenham. I've had Marlin cut 6mm slices and 3.5mm slices with a little translucency.
