Hello Martin, list Yes, it's a weathered H4 chondrite and looks ugly on the outside. I saw the meteorite and I have some slices. The analysis was performed at the Vienna Museum and it will be soon published in the bulletin. If anyone wants a pice, just let me know. [meteorite-list] New fall in Romania
Hi List I'm happy to announce a new fall in Romania. After a fireball seen in 3 counties and sonic booms, a stone of 6.2 kg was found in a little impact hole. I've seen the stone, my guess is that it is a L4 based on an XRF measurment of Fe and a close examination of the little broken surface. The true analysis will be performed in January next year. For the moment this is the only piece found and I dont think it will be available for the market. photos available at : http://www.flickr.com/photos/imca7652 Best regards, Andrei IMCA7652 ___ Vodafone scaneaza automat toate mesajele impotriva virusilor folosind Trend Micro VirusWall. Re: [meteorite-list] Rocks from Space Picture of the Day / NWA 4024
Hi list I wonder where is the line between a high metal winonaite and a silicated iron as in some irons, the silicate inclusions are winonaitic. Maybe analyses made on a piece where silicates are dominant can give a winonaite classification and on other pieces of the same fall with dominant iron can give an iron classification ? I'm asking because I have some pieces of NWA 4024 with silicates and some without, only irons, and recently I cut some small iron meteorites from Morocco and found them very similar with the irons from NWA 4024. Shall I call them irons ? or metal inclusions from a W chondrite ? First we thought it might be paired with NWA 2680. Further analyses at the Nat. Hist. Museum in Bern showed that this is not the case: Ni 8.58 und 7.82 % (NWA 2680: 13.7%) Co 0.47 und 0.46 % (NWA 2680: 0.54%) Cu 10 ppm (NWA 2680: 548 ppm) Ni and Cu contents show that our material is very likely not paired with NWA 2680. Then we saw high res. picts of NWA 4024 and noticed that our material looks visually identical to NWA 4024. We sold several pieces on ebay as new iron last year. Unfortunately the museum in Bern could not classify our material, so we sent 25 grams to Dr. Greshake in Berlin. To be sure that it is the same material as NWA 4024, he suggested to make an O-Isotope analysis which he can't do himself but scientifists in England he is working with. But it seems that our material is right at the bottom of the priority list of these English scientists - so we have to be patient. As soon we have the results from England, we will inform you and put some of our material on ebay again. Today, I will do my best to answer these questions, as I will be out of town for three weeks, as of tommorow. These are questions that the entire list may be interested in reading the answer. I recieved a question a while back, about vesicles, and vugs in chondrules. Bascily the gentleman wanted to know why I said By definition chondrules cannot have vugs/vesicles. Here now is my expalnation, and I apologize to the person for the delay. My answer is derived from an article written for a book written in 1983 entitled Chondrules and Their Origins(published by the Lunar and Planetary Institiute, edited by Elbert A. King). Basicly the definition of chondrule as of 1983, and 1988(a paper published by John Wasson), is an object that has been melted, and cooled rapidly, thus creating small and fine grained aggregates, and in some cases quenched glass. These are spherical to subspherical, and may contain lithic fragments. Now, anytime silicate material is cooled rapidly, the crystals tend to be small, as well as the possible formation of volcanic glass. The mode of formation of chondrules precludes vesicles/vugs based on this, as most gas was probobly removed due to volitization when the material was initialy heated, thereby not allowing to be incorporated in to the rapidly cooling silicates. Here on Earth, I am currently unaware of any igneous bodies, that have been cooled rapidly(i.e. obsidian deposits) that contain any appreciable gas bubbles. Pumice is in a sense volcanic glass that has cooled rapidly, and contains gas in it, but in having this property, it has little structural rigidity, and breaks down readily in relativly short geologic time. So based on the above information, it seems that that chondrules with vesicle/vugs are not likely to occur. However, I am aware that there are still many debates on what exactly a chondrule is, and how to define them. I choose the above definiton, because I am not a chondrule expert, and prefer to follow what seems plausible as realistic classification. I am positive, either right now, or sometime soon the above idea may change, but I will use the above definition until I see otherwise. One more quick comment. I have to upgrade my reference above, as it is somewhat incomplete. The references I need have been checked out of the Library here, and I can't properly site until they come back. I will post the reference, with page numbers when I get back. I had a question on the E-chondrite Earth. I will attempt to explain this paper in as much detail I can(M. Javoy, The integral enstatite chondrite model of the earth Geophysical Research Letters, Vol. 22, No. 16, Pages 2219-, August 15, 1995.) It should be kept in mind that this is an alternative to the conventional earth model that says ordinary chondritic material is what the earth formed from. The basic idea of the article is that E-chondrites match the earth in stable isotope, and redox characteristics. Redox is term used to denote a chemical reaction adding or taking away oxygen. By looking at these properties, models can be made to explain the differentiation of the earths mantle, meaning why the elements are found the way they are in the mantle. The mantle is thought to be homogeneous based on elements found in E,C, and Ordinary chondrites. Using simple chemistry, the depth at which different elements would be found in the mantle is used to try and make a picture of the mantle's makeup. The author of this paper indicates this may be wrong, and the mantle is heterogoneous. The author attempts to explain this by using e-chondrites as building blocks of planet earth. EH- chondrites are the material that is used in the modeling, because it appears to have the closest elemental, and isotopic compositions of the earth. The author explains in some detail the various effects of EH material in the earth, to show it to be feasible. The main point to remember is that the mantle may not be as homgeneous as previously thought, and that it may in fact hold two very different elemental

The head of the police in the nearby town of Moinesti, Gelu Margina, also said the mining or the oil exploitation in the area did not announce any incidents. Such situations occurred when a strong plane exceeded a certain height and is called a sonic boom, said Margina. However, the air units in the county did not announce any incident. In our base there were no flights starting with Wednesday and there are no flights on the civil airport, either, said the public relations officer from the 95 Air Base in Bacau, Gelu Miron. I see a free meteorite for anyone who can do that. Mike Farmer I have the hardware to capture video the computer and the software to process it, but I don't have CNN. So if noone else can video capture it, if someone wanted to tape it and send me the VHS tape, I could make it available in any popular video format. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list ___ Connex scaneaza automat toate mesajele impotriva virusilor folosind Trend Micro VirusWall. Hi listees, Hi Martin ! All of the meteorite people who will be at the Munich meeting, have hopefully read this message from Martin. Now and here, acting for most of us all, I want to say a big lot of thanks to Martin for making the whole lot of work with getting us together on friday evening on one meeting point and providing all of us with this extensive information on accommodations, maps and various ways how to get there. I think we will invite him there for a good Weizenbier (or more) for doing this for us. Is anybody else the same opinion ? I want to read many replies !!! best regards, Christian IMCA #2673 www.austromet.com Christian Anger Korngasse 6 2405 Bad Deutsch-Altenburg AUSTRIA email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Martin Altmann Sent: Thursday, October 21, 2004 8:27 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] MUNICH - FRIDAY - How to get there hints. Hello list, After many hours of trying to customize a plan, how to get to the meeting at Friday, I decided, that I'm definetely to stupid for this world. Can't print out the maps, as I own only an old blackwhite printer and the results are unreadable. Now I customized 2 plans as pdf-files. If someone could put them online, perhaps converted to jpegs? Otherwise I'll email the plans to those, who will join on Friday, if someone else has a need for it, gimme a note. Anyway, we will meet at the show So on Friday we meet after the show in the Fliegerbräu. A minute brewery with Bavarian and other food and no umpah music. It's in the nearby village Feldkirchen. (Were also some of you have their hotels). The address is: Flieger Bräu Sonnenstrasse 2 85622 Feldkirchen http://www.fliegerbraeu.de/ Marked with the red 1 in the plans. I reserved places from 19:00hrs on (show ends always at 18:00 for visitors) and I will be there somewhat earlier. Until now there are on my list: Afanasjev friends, Altmann, Andrei, Anger, Black, Classen, Farmer, Franco, Gren, Jost+friend, Koeblitz, Marmet, Moser, Rems, Stehlik, Strufe. The Polish fraction (Cimala, Derecki, Pilski, Mazurek) will join, depending on when they'll arrive in Munich). Vassiliev doesn't know yet. Ralew is now somewhere to bring new meteorites for us, but I'm sure, he will come. And now I'll ask several others... So it will be nice. How to get there: By car: I marked the route in plan1 but it dissapears, whenever I try to save it..wuaah. There are two possibilities to exit the parking places. Here a map of the fair areal. Click on the right plan on bottom. http://www.mineralientage.com/1_MM_start/2_Welcome_E/3_01_E_Besucherservice/ 4_01_2_E_Anfahrt/4_01_2_E_Anfahrt.html If you leave to the North: Just turn to your right and follow the street. (Paul-Henri-Spaak-Str.) After ca. 1km you will cross the large highway and after 300m more you will enter the village Feldkirchen (yellow traffic sign). Carry on. After 1km, on the left there branches off the Sonnenstrasse. Directly there we are. It's directly behind a yellow hotel, called Zur Sonne. If you leave the parking places to the South: Just turn to the left, follow the street (De-Gaspari-Bogen), which makes a bow. Turn into first possible road to the right, then like above. By bus: At the fair exit Messestadt Ost, at the subway station, there is the bus station. Take Bus N° 228 direction Ismaning. Exit the bus at the third station: Feldkirchen Münchner Straße. (takes 5 minutes). Cross the street, follow the street, it's the main street of the village. The fifth street, to the left, called Sonnenstrasse - shortly after you'll have passed a yellow Hotel called Zur Sonne - there you enter the street and there we are in the grey brick building. It's about 500m to walk. You may exit also the bus one station later, Feldkirchen (6min) - train symbol in plan2 - and follow the instruction by S-Bahn (suburban railway). As ticket you have to choose from the vending machine: Kurzstrecke. Costs 1.10 Euro. If you have a Streifenkarte see below, use one stripe. The bus leaves every 20 minutes from xx:17 hrs (18:17, 18:37,...) Last bus leaves at 19:37 hrs. With S-Bahn (suburban railway) For those, who want to get back first in their hotels in the city center to rest a while after the show, the place is easy reachable by S-Bahn. Follow the green signs with S. Choose line number S6 direction Erding. Exit at station Feldkirchen. Marked with the railway symbol in plan2. Just follow the street Sonnenstrasse until its end. Left is Fliegerbräu,

Regards, Andrei - Original Message - From: Pierre-Marie PELE [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello, I've got the fragment of a L6 chondrite which presents a strange structure, at the meeting point of 3 veins. I think it's a glassy structure resulting from the heat reaching the inner of the meteorite by the shock veins but I'm not sure. The size of this structure is a bit more than 1cm. Can anyone tell me what it is ? Re: [meteorite-list] Iranian Fireball Was Of Geophysical Origin
Sorry for bothering you but wat is the meaning of geometeorite ? A meteorite is an object. I live in a geologicaly active region and before any earthquake we can see some kind of globular lightings a globular stable plasma of some kind, yet unexplained by science. It usually explodes with aparent no reason, either when flyind or when touching things. I am sure both Elma and the iranian fireball are some formations of this kind. Sometimes those things are reported as UFOs because fly is chaotic ways.
