This is one of my most prized meteorites since I never ordered it, the meteorite arrived serendipitously! This production was initiated by my dear collector collegue Dieter Heinlein, and is special insofar, as it is nicely coloured, looking almost like the original natural stone, which I once had the pleasure to be able to hold it in my hands, and moreover it has exactly the weight of the original stone. As a general explanation as to likely why some of these have high bids: - The $312k moon pieces seem to have 1 bid but the reserve may not have been met yet. Still, at $175 per gram it may be a good deal if you have the money. - The mask also has 1 bid, probably due to good advertising, although the reserve also is not met. - The Seymchan sphere has over 20 bids!!! I think there is a good chance the thieves will attempt to sell these Campos at the gem show, so I'd like to ask all of you to please be on the lookout for them. They will be very easy to ID, as all three have natural holes, all have been cleaned and have the typical blackish color of treated Campos, and are of widely varying weights. I don't have exact weights, unfortunately, but here is a brief description: 1) Small individual, less than 100 grams, resembles a human face with a hole in the middle 2) Very distinctive triangular or knife blade-shaped iron with flat faces (no thumbprints) maybe about 800 grams, with a natural hole near the edge that makes it look very much like an alligator or dinosaur head. Stands up naturally with the hole near the top long edge. 3) Roundish individual, approx 1.5 kilos with smallish natural hole If you are approached by individuals trying to sell these three irons, please take appropriate action. I would suggest stating you'd like to buy them and ask if you can hold onto the pieces for a couple of hours to get them evaluated. Then call 911 and report stolen merchandise. I can be reached at 520 742 and i...@aerolite.org I am offering a substantial reward for any information leading to the arrest of the thieves. Re: [meteorite-list] OT -Oil reserves, the reality
Hi David, 340 billion dollars leaves the U.S. every year to buy oil, when we have all the oil we need right here, its the 24 billion barrels at the Bakken Oil Formation in S.D. Our politicians are running this scam and we are the fools. Think of all the jobs this would create and onshore drilling would also be much safer against oil spills, keeping the money here, would also greatly help America. Just what are the politicians thinking? Will the oil in the Bakken Formation free us from depending on foreign oil? You bet it will. We need more money to buy meteorites:) Best Regards, Timothy Heitz - not Ph.d - Original Message - From: David R. Vann drv...@sas.upenn.edu To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Friday, April 08, 2011 1:16 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] OT -Oil reserves, the reality Thought maybe it was time to change the thread title, and maybe stop this non-meteorite thread. In truth, I am responding to correct some factually inaccurate statements. Guido, I respectfully suggest that you investigate the facts before you make statements like We are played for fools by the career politicians in Washington who pander to the environmentalists and prevent us from tapping our own reserves which are larger and easier to obtain than all the oil in the Middle East. That's why we object to increased pump prices. Politicians are not pandering to environmentalists, they are pandering to businesses, I think the events of the last thirty years speak very strongly to this; attacks on the Clean Air and Clean water acts, the Great Recession, the Savings and Loan disaster, the Energy trading frauds, etc. (I can go on for quite a while here, but is not the forum). Environmentalists have very little influence on the price of oil, if any. Rather, market forces determine this entirely. Examples: in the late '70's oil did not skyrocket because of environmentalists, it did so because OPEC was flexing its newfound muscle. Oil prices did not jump prior to the Great Recession because of environmentalists; it jumped because of speculators and because the oil refiners underestimated demand by China and India, resulting in inadequte production capacity (there was plenty of crude oil). The cost of oil is related to the cost of drilling; I could, again, go on, but this isn't really the forum. Suffice it to say, the price of oil is driven by market factors that are *not* related to supply, as the supply can be (and frequently is) increased to meet demand. So, environmentalists atempting to reduce drilling are not affecting the price, regardless of how one wants to view it. Most recently, the state of Florida, under a Republican govorner, decided to limit in-shore drilling to protect the states' fishing and tourist industries. They were deemed more valuable (to the state) than the short-term gains from onshore drilling - an economic argument, not an environmental one. Our oil prices are lower because we consume so much, getting a discount, and because we subsidize the oil companies with tax dollars. Government subsidies for profitable companies are not defensible, yet they keep getting them, because the politicians are pandering to the industries paying for their reelection. The final inaccuracy, tapping our own reserves which are larger and easier to obtain than all the oil in the Middle East is the most egregious. This is simply wrong. The proven resources in the US are about 22 billion barrels of oil; Saudi arabia *alone* has an estimated 270 billion barrels. Although that number has been questioned as possibly politically motivated, it is not overestmated by a factor of ten. If we take the 1968 numbers (before OPEC), they had something like 170 billion barrels, still fabulously more than our reserves. Our remaining reserves are not easier to obtain (discounting the politcal issues related to dealing with the Middle East), as they are increasingly deep water reserves (whose difficulty was amply demonstrated last summer) or in shales, which are environmentally destructive and energetically and mechanically difficult to extract; in fact, to date, there has been no economically viable method to extract these (but we will, when gas is expensive enough). The oil companies are going for the easy fruit first, as it is the most profitable. Sorry, but I have a difficult time letting false information get distributed - much like the NYT article. Plenty of others responded to that, so I'm responding to this one. The fact is, the Middle East holds more than one-half of the total reserves in the world. North America, including the shale sands in Canada holds maybe 16%. The largest reserves are in Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and the former USSR. We consume about 6.6 billion barrels per year, so we have about 3 or 4 years, if we drilled everything (that we 'own'). The world average consumption rate vs the reserves indicates that we have

Let me bring all of you up to speed on this. Five years ago, I partnered with around 10 or so friends and they combined some money, and I offered up some time and we started hunting for meteorites together. We choose to go to a certain location in Kansas where pallasites had been found in the past. We chose this location after I had my success locating some pallasite meteorites at the Brenham strewnfield. We got land leases to hunt, without any promise of any big money, no talk of Millions, or thousands or even hundreds of dollars to anyone. We just started hunting and we started finding meteorites. Some of my friends, at least 8 of us in the group, were very connected meteorite dealers and we decided to try to sell some of our finds, we tried and we tried and we tried, and we sold one meteorite. We contacted virtually all the institutions with notable meteorite collections and none of them wanted to either buy or to trade for any of our specimens. The one sale was made, and the land owner from where this meteorite came from got his contracted percentage royalty, and he was VERY pleased. It was truly money from heaven for him. The meteorites from this particular location have the reputation of being the worst rusting meteorites known to man. Far worse than Campo, Nantan, Brenham or any other ruster one can think of. So we could understand why no one wanted to buy any more of this meteorite. It was just too big of a risk for people to take. As we kept finding more and more meteorites, we were challenged with the supply and demand issue. Much supply, virtually no demand. Not a good outlook. Then one of the dealers in the group reminded us of the high quality gemstones that had been faceted from the peridot in this meteorite. So we took the specimen in the worst condition out of our inventory and practiced trying to free up some of the olivine that was in it, and sure enough, there were some amazing gemstones produced. A year and a half ago, we went to all the land owners where we had found meteorites and told them that if we would liquidate all the meteorites we found, we probably would only get $0.10 or $0.15 per gram. But we felt that as gemstones, we could make more money for everyone. We decided to incorporate

Hi Scott and Terri, Great story congratulations on your find cool stuff Cheers, Tim Heitz - Original Message - From: U.S. Airborne onther...@usairborne.com To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Tuesday, February 15, 2011 12:00 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Valentines day find Terri,s 1st find a big one Hi Meteorite Gang. Yesterday was my wife, Terri I had our 22nd wedding anniversary. 22 years ago we got Married by a Judge in Modesto CA. Then we headed over to Reno to watch a Sammy Davis Jr Show enjoying life. 22 years later we found ourselves out in AZ hunting Meteorites together on our Valentines day wedding anniversary. Life this last week has been really really hard on both of us as our loving Bird Chopper had just passed away totally unexpectedly. It was a huge loss as Chop, a yellow napped Mecca has been with us for 16 loving years. After burying him on a Mt top in the Desert building a Rock monument for him. Then we tried to move on with life. So Yesterday we went Meteorite hunting on our 22nd anniversary together. It was a sunny warm day it was real good to be out hunting together on this special day. I had hunted the day before up in the foothills washes with my metal detector and when I was setting up my detector I threw down a nice sized H meteorite to test out my X-Terra and be sure it was all working O.K. Well it did, but like a dummy I left my meteorite on the ground forgot all about it as I headed out detecting. That night when I returned back to the motor home I realized I was missing my Meteorite throw down. Not only did I not find any thing but I lost one so here I was at a -1 on my finds for the day. I was a bit embarrassed so I did not tell my wife I lost it till the next A.M. The next morning I asked my wife if she would like to join me in relocating my lost Meteorite. She gladly said Yes. I retraced my 4x4 tracks to the exact location about 4 miles out where I tuned my detector at and found my lost meteorite throw down . I felt much better now so we hunted this area for a bit before heading back for lunch. After lunch Terri I headed out for an afternoon hunt. I was back to 0 finds but better then the -1 I was at this A.M. I pointed to a area not far from our motor home that I wanted to hunt, it was ridges washes so we went slow in our little 4x4 over a few ridges. Then we stopped hunted in a probing circle. We traded off with the detector meteorite cane. After a 1/2 hr in one area we moved over a ridge was slowly driving our side by side 4x4 hunting as we drove. Just as I said I see other quad tracks. My wife loudly said Oh what a pretty orange rock, so I stopped. She jumped out before I was fully stopped, so by the time I had set the parking brake shut it off got out of the buggy she returned with it in here hands. 1st thing she said was it sure is heavy and she handed it to me. I looked at it and my Jaw flew open. I said Wow I think you have a big one. It was heavy , kind of felt like 10 lbs or so. I said where was it and she pointed to the hole, then she said there is a broken piece that is off of it to. She grabbed it fit the puzzle pieces together. My Jaw was still gaped open I pulled out my loop threw my cowboy hat onto the ground as it was shadowing the rock from full sunlight. After looking at it I said yes its for sure a space rock. This is when she really realized what she had found she stared to smile. It was a huge giggly smile, The one I was waiting to see from her when she found her 1st meteorite. We still never took time to put a magnet to it , so we grabbed a magnet it had a real strong pull, then I grabbed the detector it also said what we already knew that this was a S.R.. I told Terri she needs to now do all of her own documentation pictures. We put this large meteorite back into the hole it was found in and laid the smaller broken off piece back where it came from also . Terri took some pics in Situ then with GPS with rock in hole then out of hole. She also did same with broken off smaller piece. After Terri finished up documenting her find we took some fun pics of her holding it putting the puzzle pieces together. Got great pics of her happy dance also. After pics celebration I went to finding me a small piece of this guy . I detected the empty hole and found one last little broken piece that completed the main stone and the larger broken corner she had found. One end of it looked like a loaf of bread then it tapered off 45 degrees to the other end and it has some large thumb prints. The larger broken chunk has nice thumb prints also. The only fusion crust that was still black was only about 1 1/2 inches of the top. At one time the larger mass was buried deeper in the soil. Then it was partly uncovered by floods over the years leaving a rusty orange color visible below the black fusion crust. This Orange color is what Terri 1st saw

Hi Ed, I've treated all my metallic meteorites with Rig. It is a rust preventative used for guns. Of all the meteorites treated with Rig, none have shown any evidence for rust. I've had them for about 4 yearsnot a speck of rust. I have one Campo that was pretreated by the seller with some sort of dark colored supposed protectant, and it has slowly started to rust away. I figure that Campo will be almost completely rusted in another 5 years. I wish the seller had just left it alone, and I would have treated it with Rig, and it would not have had any rust on it. One problem with Rig. I don't think it's manufactured anymore. Too badthe stuff REALLY prevents rust, and you can't even tell it's on the meteorite. You just apply a thin coat (it's a type of grease, but disappears when applied). The meteorites are not oily at all after treatment. Once I run out of the stuff, then I'm in the same boat as everyone else. Hello Bernd, Thanks for the nice explanation. The schlieren banding will only be seen after etching, I got it Tim - Original Message - From: bernd.pa...@paulinet.de To: Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Sunday, October 03, 2010 1:47 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] New Gebel Kamil meteorite with Schlieren bands Hello Tim, Mirko, and List, As Mirko already pointed out, the schlieren banding will only be seen after etching (at least slight etching or deep-etch if you prefer that). Only then will you see these characteristic diffuse streaks (usually of group IVB ataxites - another reason why Gebel Kamil is classified as ungrouped). The image that Mirko provided and one of my slices (from Mirko) clearly reveal those bands and patches dovetailed into each other and tapering out irregularly. Now, when you tilt such polished and etched slices against a light source, you will notice that bright and matte parts shift alternatingly: the bands that were bright from one perspective, now appear dull and vice versa. This oriented sheen has to do with the alpha + gamma structure, cooling, decomposition, (absence of) diffusion, crystallographic orientation, etc. .. too complicated (for me :-) to explain. Hi Count, You said it! I couldn't agree more, It is the research, and the science, and the rarity, that first drive the desirabilitythen the other factors of collection enter the picture to set the initial price. Please, ladies and gentlemen, don't denigrate those of us who say we collect for investment. We, in reality, support the research and the science of our learned academics with our obsession to participate by desiring to have and to hold what they have discovered. Some people say they like a hammer because it hit something, other people say the meteorite should have an old story. If it's from the Moon or Mars or Earth, there will be many paired NWA's to choose from. Three cheers for the NWA's, its a collectors dream come true. But, Shawn, Count, all.. with NWA you get material, which you couldn't afford, if you'd have to buy it in form of historics, material, where not sufficient quantities for all, collectorsscientists, are available among the historics, you get NEW material and sometimes material not to be found among historics and you get it at an all-time-in-history-rock-bottom-low-price. (See my boringly lengthy posting from yesterday on the IMCA-list) And I don't know, always this volatileness... I mean for most collectors, meteorites are more than only an episode of two or three years, NWA we have for only 10 years now, all in all I don't have the impression that a price decline of NWAs happened, to me it seems rather, that the recent years they're getting - some slowly, some faster - more expensive. And if you think on the somewhat longer run, mid-term, I think, then it won't carry weight, whether today a NWA costs a couple of dollars more or less. Btw. meteorites are much more than curios or collectibles, they are objects of current cutting-edge research. Other than with fine art, antiques, coins, books, baseball cards ect. that field isn't so concludingly closed in that respect. And really..., it is certainly not the business of the research institutes and universities, to serve as certifiers and consultants for the valuation of meteorites as commercial collectibles. They do research and science. And that is one point, which makes meteorite collecting so fascinating, that you can participate to a certain degree in the red-hot space research! Best! [meteorite-list] How many Hexahedrites are there? HELP NEEDED with pictures
I want to thank all of you, Bernd, Jörn,Ken, Herman,MexicoDoug and Anne for the information provided. So far what I believe is there are 62 hexahedrites and not all are (IIAB) The other few hexahedrites other than (IIAB) are the hardest to find I have not seen an example of a (IIG) yet. I have not found many pictures of hexahedrites that show the unique pattern of the Neumann lines, if someone can point me to a link or e-mail me a picture I would appreciate it. I want to assemble a page on my web site devoted to the hexahedrites for reference, little is known about the hexahedrites. I'm having a difficult time putting this together, I would like to use any pictures you may have, I will tell where the picture came from of course. I know that Geoff and Steve originally set up the Harvey Awards where they could not nominate themselves for an award.
