On January 2, 1990 I received a package from noted meteorite dealer
David New.I did not remember ordering a meteorite and proceeded to
open the package.I was immediately elated, screaming and jumping for
joy!To my surprise it was a 4.6 gram fragment with fusion crust of the
Murray CM2 carbonaceous chondrite which fell on September 20, 1950 in
Calloway County, Kentucky.I immediately called David New and thanked
him for the specimen.I said “the check is in the mail”.Mr. New laughed
and said I knew you would like it.David New stated“when I obtained the
meteorite I immediately thought of you since you have a passion for
carbonaceous chondrites.I did not add it to the catalog and instead
immediately mailed the specimen out to you.”These were the days before
the internet where there was much trust between a dealer and their
respective collector. The dealers even knew the specialized types of
meteorites their collectors preferred. This is one of my most prized
meteorites since I never ordered it, the meteorite arrived
serendipitously! The Murray CM2 is similar to the Murchison CM2 with
respect to organic compounds including extraterrestrially produced.
amino acids.

I got one of those casts from Bob back in the day and he autographed it on

I just weighed it and mine weighs 899 grams exactly.

Don't know why others weigh double that??? maybe different casting agent?

Maybe it's characteristic for all CM2 meteorites to contain them?

[meteorite-list] Does the Jbilet Winselwan meteorite have amino acids?

2014-11-17 Thread Tim Heitz via Meteorite-list

Hello List,

Does the Jbilet Winselwan meteorite have amino acids?

I'm very surprised someone doesn't have an answer, in time I guess there
will be an answer.

I want to thank those that have e-mailed me and shared their thoughts
with me.

Thanks,
Tim Heitz

It's been awhile since I have studied meteorites, is Murchison still
the only meteorite to contain amino acids?

Last time I checked 93 amino acids had been found in the Murchison
meteorite.

Very interesting. As a general explanation as to likely why some of these
have high bids:

- The $312k moon pieces seem to have 1 bid but the reserve may not have been
met yet. Still, at $175 per gram it may be a good deal if you have the
money.

- The mask also has 1 bid, probably due to good advertising, although the
reserve also is not met.

- The Seymchan sphere has over 20 bids!!! People seem to like spheres.

- The NWA 725 doesn't have any bids, it's just the asking starting price.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Stolen Campo Alert, Tucson Gem Show

Dear Listees:

I am sorry to report that the window of my truck was smashed this
evening (evidently with a sledgehammer or similar), in Tucson, and a
bag containing three Campos was stolen along with various personal
items. I think there is a good chance the thieves will attempt to sell
these Campos at the gem show, so I'd like to ask all of you to please
be on the lookout for them. They will be very easy to ID, as all three
have natural holes, all have been cleaned and have the typical
blackish color of treated Campos, and are of widely varying weights. I
don't have exact weights, unfortunately, but here is a brief
description:

1) Small individual, less than 100 grams, resembles a human face with
a hole in the middle

2) Very distinctive triangular or knife blade-shaped iron with flat
faces (no thumbprints) maybe about 800 grams, with a natural hole near
the edge that makes it look very much like an alligator or dinosaur
head. Stands up naturally with the hole near the top long edge.

3) Roundish individual, approx 1.5 kilos with smallish natural hole

If you are approached by individuals trying to sell these three irons,
please take appropriate action. I would suggest stating you'd like to
buy them and ask if you can hold onto the pieces for a couple of hours
to get them evaluated. Then call 911 and report stolen merchandise.

I can be reached at 520 742 and i...@aerolite.org

I am offering a substantial reward for any information leading to the
arrest of the thieves.

Thanks for reading, and for all of you currently in Tucson, enjoy the
show and PLEASE be extra vigilant with your property. Theft is on the
rise at the show and seems to get worse every year. I've heard of a
lot of showroom thefts, but this is the first gem show-related vehicle
break-in that I am aware of.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

Geoff N.

[meteorite-list] Send me your Meteorite Picture now

2012-01-08 Thread Tim Heitz
Being a dealer of meteorites means being able to buy and sell. That's the
definition of dealer in the dictionary. Is a person
that buy and sells. The reason I decided to be a dealer in meteorites was
the chance to build a collection as a collector.

So why would anyone want a collection of meteorites?
To hold in your hand a piece of the solar system, a rock from space older
than the earth itself, this is whats so intriguing about collecting
meteorites. Tumbling through space from places unknown, these stones
survived a violent passage through the atmosphere to crash land on earth.
For many millions, even billions of years they have been floating in space
in total darkness, at zero gravity conditions, and at extremely cold
temperatures and now after all that, it has come to rest in your hand. (now
thats cool !)

Like most collectors of anything, if they get a chance to buy 10 at a big
discount , so they can sell 9 of them at a profit to pay for 1

that will go into their collection they will do it. On an average I get 4
phone calls a month with someone telling me they have a meteorite.

And the story goes like this, My grand father found it on his farm, it
responds to a magnet. I read about meteorites on the internet
it looks like a meteorite on your web site, its brown and I can see crystals
in it. So, my first answer to this is, please send me a picture.

The other type of call I get is something like this, I have a meteorite that
belonged to my father who has died a few months ago and he collected all
kinds of rocks.
He was a rock hound and he had a meteorite in his collection, I have it for
sale.My answer to this is, please send me a picture.

So what happens when you get the picture and it does look like a meteorite?

I have bought meteorites from all over the World like this, thats why I put
up a meteorite web site in the spring of 1997, it was for the chance of
finding
a newly discovered meteorite. My web site was the fourth meteorite web
site on the internet in 1997, sure I didn't know a lot about meteorites at
the time,

but I sure did want to mingle with those that did and that was 15 years ago.

Ya, meteorites are cool! So send me your picture You may never know
what surprise may be in store

I want to set-up a meteorite ruster's Hall of Fame picture gallery.

There will be a REWARD for the top rusters that rank highest in the
ruster gallery, I won't say what the reward is until the ruster picture
gallery is full of pictures.

I don't know how long it will take or how many pictures will be needed.

I'm looking for close-up photo's of the rusting and flaking meteorites, like
the one in the link shown below.

The 3382g Campo in the picture belongs to me a doesn't count for the reward,
but you get the idea.

There will be a REWARD for the top rusters that rank highest in the
ruster gallery, I won't say what the reward is until the ruster picture
gallery is full of pictures.

I don't know how long it will take or how many pictures will be needed.

I'm looking for close-up photo's of the rusting and flaking meteorites,
like the one in the link shown below.

The 3382g Campo in the picture belongs to me a doesn't count for the
reward, but you get the idea.

Re: [meteorite-list] OT -Oil reserves, the reality

2011-04-08 Thread Tim Heitz

Hi David,

340 billion dollars leaves the U.S. every year to buy oil, when we
have all the oil we need right here, its the 24 billion barrels at the
Bakken Oil Formation in S.D.

Our politicians are running this scam and we are the fools. Think of all the
jobs this would create
and onshore drilling would also be much safer against oil spills, keeping
the money here, would

also greatly help America. Just what are the politicians thinking?

Will the oil in the Bakken Formation free us from depending on foreign oil?
You bet it will.

We need more money to buy meteorites:)

Subject: [meteorite-list] OT -Oil reserves, the reality

Thought maybe it was time to change the thread title, and maybe stop this
non-meteorite thread. In truth, I am responding to correct some factually
inaccurate statements.

Guido, I respectfully suggest that you investigate the facts before you
make
statements like We are played for fools by the career politicians in
Washington
who pander to the environmentalists and prevent us from tapping our own
reserves

which are larger and easier to obtain than all the oil in the Middle East.
That's why we object to increased pump prices.

Politicians are not pandering to environmentalists, they are pandering to
businesses, I think the events of the last thirty years speak very
strongly to
this; attacks on the Clean Air and Clean water acts, the Great Recession,
the
Savings and Loan disaster, the Energy trading frauds, etc. (I can go on
for

quite a while here, but is not the forum).
Environmentalists have very little influence on the price of oil, if any.
Rather, market forces determine this entirely. Examples: in the late '70's
oil

did not skyrocket because of environmentalists, it did so because OPEC was
flexing its newfound muscle. Oil prices did not jump prior to the Great
Recession because of environmentalists; it jumped because of speculators
and
because the oil refiners underestimated demand by China and India,
resulting in
inadequte production capacity (there was plenty of crude oil). The cost of
oil
is related to the cost of drilling; I could, again, go on, but this isn't
really
the forum. Suffice it to say, the price of oil is driven by market factors
that
are *not* related to supply, as the supply can be (and frequently is)
increased

to meet demand.

So, environmentalists atempting to reduce drilling are not affecting the
price,
regardless of how one wants to view it. Most recently, the state of
Florida,
under a Republican govorner, decided to limit in-shore drilling to protect
the
states' fishing and tourist industries. They were deemed more valuable (to
the
state) than the short-term gains from onshore drilling - an economic
argument,

not an environmental one.

Our oil prices are lower because we consume so much, getting a discount,
and
because we subsidize the oil companies with tax dollars. Government
subsidies
for profitable companies are not defensible, yet they keep getting them,
because
the politicians are pandering to the industries paying for their
reelection.

The final inaccuracy, tapping our own reserves which are larger and
easier to

obtain than all the oil in the Middle East is the most egregious. This is
simply wrong. The proven resources in the US are about 22 billion barrels
of
oil; Saudi arabia *alone* has an estimated 270 billion barrels. Although
that

number has been questioned as possibly politically motivated, it is not
overestmated by a factor of ten. If we take the 1968 numbers (before
OPEC), they
had something like 170 billion barrels, still fabulously more than our
reserves.

Our remaining reserves are not easier to obtain (discounting the politcal
issues
related to dealing with the Middle East), as they are increasingly deep
water
reserves (whose difficulty was amply demonstrated last summer) or in
shales,

which are environmentally destructive and energetically and mechanically
difficult to extract; in fact, to date, there has been no economically
viable
method to extract these (but we will, when gas is expensive enough). The
oil
companies are going for the easy fruit first, as it is the most
profitable.

Sorry, but I have a difficult time letting false information get
distributed -
much like the NYT article. Plenty of others responded to that, so I'm
responding
to this one. The fact is, the Middle East holds more than one-half of the
total
reserves in the world. North America, including the shale sands in Canada
holds
maybe 16%. The largest reserves are in Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and the
former

USSR.

We consume about 6.6 billion barrels per year, so we have about 3 or 4
years, if

we drilled everything (that we 'own').

The world average consumption rate vs the reserves indicates that we have

2011-03-04 Thread Tim Heitz

Hello List,

I built an LED lighted display case for the Brenham Slice I got from Steve
Arnold.

It plugs into 110vac outlet , I have it plugged into an X10 timer that turns
it on 1/2 hour after sunset

and turns off at 12 midnight everyday, it's eye candy on the wall.

The unit puts out very low heat and the LEDs, should have a lifespan of
100,000 hours.

If someone is interested in making their slice lighted, please let me know.

Hey List,

I have some killer stuff on Ebay right now:

A 2,400 gram 19 inch wide slice of Muonionalusta in a super heavy duty
frame encased in oil. I also played around with 3 different lights to
get

some whacky cool images with the various light reflecting off the
Widmanstatten structure. This alone is worth a minute to look at. In
addition to

the slice being preserved in oil, the frame also allows the slice to have
that neat wet look.

183 gram Vaca Muerta full slice from the mass found on the Meteorite Men
Chile episode. Also a couple part slices remaining from the small end
piece

I chopped up.

14.6 kg Muonionalusta whole specimen. Nice.

33.8 gram Ash Creek full slice.

An assortment of Meteorite Magnets, small specimen cases, with specimens
in them, attached to refrigerator magnets. Great price, neat novelty to
have part of your collection on your refrigerator or any other metal
surface

you would choose. These also make great gifts. The new ones up just now
are all numbered and personally signed by me.

An assortment of other items are up for your pleasure.

On some of the big ticket items, I will entertain best offers on. For
list members only, over this weekend only, any order over with a total of
$50

or more and I will toss in a free Meteorite Hunters and Collectors

want the

magazine tossed in.

Check it all out here:

Also, not on Ebay yet, I have some full slices, up to 21 inches across,
of

an oriented Brenham pallasite. These are the most amazing slices I have
ever seen. I also have a new case where the slices can be placed between
two sheets of Lexan and suspended in oil. Tim Heitz bought one of these
from

me and he devised an awesome LED backlighting system for his frame, where
the frame can be hung on a wall and the whole apparatus lights up like a
cosmic stain glassed window. Maybe Tim can offer some photos if anyone
is

interested?

The Brenham slices can be sold with or without the frames, just ask for
details.

Lots of options. Enjoy.

Thanks.

OR, put the Admire masses through the Pat Mulvany process, which will
render them completely stable on par with Esquel or the world's most
stable pallasites.

Admire is a pretty meteorite, and once the rusting issue is taken care
of, it can stand on it's own against other pallasites.

No need to dissolve them in acid and try to sell the gemstones as jewelry.

Doubt Pat's process? That's fine - hang on to your rusters until they
fall apart.

Hello List,

Wow, what an outpouring of comments today.

Let me bring all of you up to speed on this.

Five years ago, I partnered with around 10 or so friends and they
combined
some money, and I offered up some time and we started hunting for
meteorites
together. We choose to go to a certain location in Kansas where
pallasites

had been found in the past.

We chose this location after I had my success locating some pallasite
meteorites at the Brenham strewnfield.
We got land leases to hunt, without any promise of any big money, no talk
of

Millions, or thousands or even hundreds of dollars to anyone. We just
started hunting and we started finding meteorites. Some of my friends,
at

least 8 of us in the group, were very connected meteorite dealers and we
decided to try to sell some of our finds, we tried and we tried and we
tried, and we sold one meteorite. We contacted virtually all the
institutions with notable meteorite collections and none of them wanted
to
either buy or to trade for any of our specimens. The one sale was made,
and

the land owner from where this meteorite came from got his contracted
percentage royalty, and he was VERY pleased. It was truly money from
heaven

for him.

The meteorites from this particular location have the reputation of being
the worst rusting meteorites known to man. Far worse than Campo, Nantan,
Brenham or any other ruster one can think of. So we could understand
why

no one wanted to buy any more of this meteorite. It was just too big of a
risk for people to take.

As we kept finding more and more meteorites, we were challenged with the
supply and demand issue. Much supply, virtually no demand. Not a good
outlook.

Then one of the dealers in the group reminded us of the high quality
gemstones that had been faceted from the peridot in this meteorite. So
we
took the specimen in the worst condition out of our inventory and
practiced
trying to free up some of the olivine that was in it, and sure enough,
there

were some amazing gemstones produced.

A year and a half ago, we went to all the land owners where we had found
meteorites and told them that if we would liquidate all the meteorites we
found, we probably would only get $0.10 or $0.15 per gram. But we felt
that as gemstones, we could make more money for everyone.

We decided to incorporate

Hi Meteorite Gang. Yesterday was my wife, Terri I had our 22nd wedding
anniversary. 22 years ago we got Married by a Judge in Modesto CA. Then we
headed over to Reno to watch a Sammy Davis Jr Show enjoying life.
22 years later we found ourselves out in AZ hunting Meteorites together on
our Valentines day wedding anniversary. Life this last week has been
really really hard on both of us as our loving Bird Chopper had just
passed away totally unexpectedly. It was a huge loss as Chop, a yellow
napped Mecca has been with us for 16 loving years. After burying him on a
Mt top in the Desert building a Rock monument for him. Then we tried to
move on with life.

So Yesterday we went Meteorite hunting on our 22nd anniversary together.
It was a sunny warm day it was real good to be out hunting together on
this special day.

I had hunted the day before up in the foothills washes with my metal
detector and when I was setting up my detector I threw down a nice sized H
meteorite to test out my X-Terra and be sure it was all working O.K.
Well it did, but like a dummy I left my meteorite on the ground forgot
all about it as I headed out detecting. That night when I returned back
to the motor home I realized I was missing my Meteorite throw down. Not
only did I not find any thing but I lost one so here I was at a -1 on my
finds for the day. I was a bit embarrassed so I did not tell my wife I
lost it till the next A.M.
The next morning I asked my wife if she would like to join me in
relocating my lost Meteorite. She gladly said Yes. I retraced my 4x4
tracks to the exact location about 4 miles out where I tuned my detector
at and found my lost meteorite throw down . I felt much better now so we
hunted this area for a bit before heading back for lunch.

After lunch Terri I headed out for an afternoon hunt. I was back to 0
finds but better then the -1 I was at this A.M. I pointed to a area not
far from our motor home that I wanted to hunt, it was ridges washes so
we went slow in our little 4x4 over a few ridges. Then we stopped hunted
in a probing circle. We traded off with the detector meteorite cane.
After a 1/2 hr in one area
we moved over a ridge was slowly driving our side by side 4x4 hunting as
we drove. Just as I said I see other quad tracks. My wife loudly said Oh
what a pretty orange rock, so I stopped. She jumped out before I was fully
stopped, so by the time I had set the parking brake shut it off got
out of the buggy she returned with it in here hands. 1st thing she said
was it sure is heavy and she handed it to me. I looked at it and my Jaw
flew open. I said Wow I think you have a big one. It was heavy , kind of
felt like 10 lbs or so. I said where was it and she pointed to the hole,
then she said there is a broken piece that is off of it to. She grabbed it
fit the puzzle pieces together. My Jaw was still gaped open I pulled out
my loop threw my cowboy hat onto the ground as it was shadowing the rock
from full sunlight. After looking at it I said yes its for sure a space
rock. This is when she really realized what she had found she stared to
smile. It was a huge giggly smile, The one I was waiting to see from her
when she found her 1st meteorite. We still never took time to put a magnet
to it , so we grabbed a magnet it had a real strong pull, then I grabbed
the detector it also said what we already knew that this was a S.R.. I
told Terri she needs to now do all of her own documentation pictures. We
put this large meteorite back into the hole it was found in and laid the
smaller broken off piece back where it came from also . Terri took some
pics in Situ then with GPS with rock in hole then out of hole. She also
did same with broken off smaller piece. After Terri finished up
documenting her find we took some fun pics of her holding it putting the
puzzle pieces together. Got great pics of her happy dance also. After
pics celebration I went to finding me a small piece of this guy . I
detected the empty hole and found one last little broken piece that
completed the main stone and the larger broken corner she had found. One
end of it looked like a loaf of bread then it tapered off 45 degrees to
the other end and it has some large thumb prints. The larger broken chunk
has nice thumb prints also. The only fusion crust that was still black was
only about 1 1/2 inches of the top. At one time the larger mass was buried
deeper in the soil. Then it was partly uncovered by floods over the years
leaving a rusty orange color visible below the black fusion crust. This
Orange color is what Terri 1st saw

 Hi Ed,

I've treated all my metallic meteorites with Rig. It is a rust
preventative used for guns. Of all the meteorites treated with Rig,
none have shown any evidence for rust. I've had them for about 4
yearsnot a speck of rust. I have one Campo that was pretreated by the
seller with some sort of dark colored supposed protectant, and it has
slowly started to rust away. I figure that Campo will be almost
completely rusted in another 5 years. I wish the seller had just left it
alone, and I would have treated it with Rig, and it would not have had
any rust on it.
One problem with Rig. I don't think it's manufactured anymore. Too
badthe stuff REALLY prevents rust, and you can't even tell it's on the
meteorite. You just apply a thin coat (it's a type of grease, but
disappears when applied). The meteorites are not oily at all after
treatment. Once I run out of the stuff, then I'm in the same boat as
everyone else.

[meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites

2010-10-25 Thread Tim Heitz

Hello List Members,

I was hoping someone could help me with this one.
I have 2 pallasites that are starting to show signs of rusting, an Admire
and Fukang.

Can someone please tell me what I can do to stop the rusting. Is there a way
to clean
them up and seal it against any further rusting. I willing to try anything
new that might work.

Any ideas?

I live in St.Louis, its very humid here, I know this might be hard to stop.

Funny I was going to ask the same exact question today.

I started collecting about 1 year ago and am starting to see rust on a
few different chondrites and on some irons including a Gibeon I bought
from Anne at the rock show in Feb. Anne thanks for the link to Bill
Mason's site. I will check that out.

I live in Maryland and it is moderate humidity here. Other than
sonny's recommendation for rust prevention aren't there other methods
/ products short of building a humidity controlled room. Maybe some
special salts, or a de-humidifier or something? One of the things I
read online was having bright/warm lights in the case where you keep
your meteorites.

Any other ideas out there?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Tim and List,

i only wonder about this photo.
Schlieren bands can be seen only after etching.
But the slice on your photo is not etched.
I think the slice is polished to a mirror and now the clouds in the sky
are reflected in it.

Thats are Schlieren bands in slices of Gebel Kamil:

Hello Tim, Mirko, and List,

As Mirko already pointed out, the schlieren banding will only be seen
after etching (at least slight etching or deep-etch if you prefer that).

Only then will you see these characteristic diffuse streaks (usually of
group
IVB ataxites - another reason why Gebel Kamil is classified as
ungrouped).

The image that Mirko provided and one of my slices (from Mirko) clearly
reveal those bands and patches dovetailed into each other and tapering out
irregularly.

Now, when you tilt such polished and etched slices against a light source,
you will notice that bright and matte parts shift alternatingly: the bands
that were bright from one perspective, now appear dull and vice versa.

This oriented sheen has to do with the alpha + gamma structure, cooling,
decomposition, (absence of) diffusion, crystallographic orientation, etc.
.. too complicated (for me :-) to explain.

Best Schlieren
wishes,

Bernd

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 6292 (BRA) IS paired to NWA 5400 !

2010-09-28 Thread Tim Heitz

Hi Count,

You said it! I couldn't agree more,
It is the research, and the science, and the rarity, that first drive the
desirabilitythen the other factors of collection enter the picture to
set the initial price.

Please, ladies and gentlemen, don't denigrate those of us who say we

science of our learned academics with our obsession to participate by
desiring to have and to hold what they have discovered.

Some people say they like a hammer because it hit something, other people
say the meteorite should have an old story.

If it's from the Moon or Mars or Earth, there will be many paired NWA's to
choose from. Three cheers for the NWA's, its a collectors dream come true.

Ensesheim meteorite is another LL6 chondrite stony meteorite. but if this is
what you like, then enjoy it.

Ah! Meine guten Freunde, Martin, Shawn und alle auf der Liste.

Martin said, And that is one point, which makes meteorite collecting so
fascinating, that

you can participate to a certain degree in the red-hot space research!

You have hit the nail on the head, Martin! I, for one, collect for the
thrill of having a specimen that advanced the knowledge of the cosmos and
our beginnings.

What would one prize more and pay more to have? A lunar brought back by an
astronaut from the moon, or the lunar found in the trackless deserts of
NWA and proven by all science available to be authentic...or a specimen
recovered from NWA that has a classification based on a PARTIAL analysis?
Of course!!! The one with the impeccable provenance of being found on the
moon!

What would command more of one's treasure. An Ensesheim with provenance,
or a stone of the same classification from NWA? How about the first
meteorite, with COMPLETE analysis, that is the first of it's kind found to
be tied to the earth's early formation? Say NWA 5400?

But, Shawn, Count, all..

with NWA you get material, which you couldn't afford, if you'd have to buy
it in form of historics,
material, where not sufficient quantities for all, collectorsscientists,
are available among the historics,
you get NEW material and sometimes material not to be found among
historics

and you get it at an all-time-in-history-rock-bottom-low-price.
(See my boringly lengthy posting from yesterday on the IMCA-list)

And I don't know, always this volatileness...

I mean for most collectors, meteorites are more than only an episode of
two

or three years,
NWA we have for only 10 years now,
all in all I don't have the impression that a price decline of NWAs
happened, to me it seems rather, that the recent years they're getting -
some slowly, some faster - more expensive.

And if you think on the somewhat longer run, mid-term,
I think, then it won't carry weight, whether today a NWA costs a couple of
dollars more or less.

Btw. meteorites are much more than curios or collectibles,
they are objects of current cutting-edge research.

Other than with fine art, antiques, coins, books, baseball cards ect. that
field isn't so concludingly closed in that respect.

And really..., it is certainly not the business of the research institutes
and universities,
to serve as certifiers and consultants for the valuation of meteorites as
commercial collectibles.
They do research and science.

And that is one point, which makes meteorite collecting so fascinating,
that

you can participate to a certain degree in the red-hot space research!

Best!
Martin

You told everyone on this list that Carancas was not a
crater, you have been proven wrong, I was proven right
with the papers in the news this week, I am merely
clarifying that, nothing more.
Now, what problem is it of mine that uneducated idiots
pissed in the crater? Does that ruin the event, make
it useless, wipe it from the history books? It was
handled fine on my end, things just got bad when
police tried to steal all of our money. What is your
advice, should I have gone to the president of Peru?
When you are in the crap, you make decisions on the
spot, it is not as easy as sitting at your desk and
typing emails. The locals were nice, just poor people
who had no idea what was going on, the government was
inept and corrupt, and the police took advantage of
the situation to try and rob us, then the proverbial
crap hit the fan from all sides. Oh well, the crater
was studied, a tiny amount of the meteorite was saved,
and the rest, as they say, it history.
Michael Farmer
--- Adam Hupe [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Mike and List,

I conceded the point long ago that the term crater
also applies to the Carancas event. I also stated
that there are different types of craters and this
one
falls into the impact pit category as was the case
with the Sikhote Alin event. Some of the craters
(impact pits) left by Sikhote Alin were also
explosive
embedding pieces of the meteorite in trees and yet
Ninninger, along with dozens of scientists referred
to
them as impact pits. I admit the definition is
somewhat hazy is why I qualified the term with To
me,

My only problem with the Carancas thing is that was
over-hyped from the beginning with much
misinformation
surrounding it. Then, no respect was given to the
occurrence and a circus soon followed. People will
treat you the way you allow them, the same applies
to
the Carancas event. Trash was thrown into the
impact
pit, people relieved themselves into it and greed
soon
became a problem. I think if the event was handled
in
a more professional matter, I would not have a
problem
with it. The way it stands, I have zero respect for
the way it was handled.

The last from me on this,

Hello all,

Funny enough, Wolfram von Eschenbach writes in his Parzival that the
grail is a stone!

Well, we'd say, if one wants to follow the conception of those grail
epics, the grail of the Martian meteorites should be either an
unobtainable

(especially deliberately unaccessible) or a true wonder.

For the first case, certainly ALH 84001 is the grail,
for the second, and finally for the collector's world not so depressing,
as it is accessible,
is our personal martian grail, the in all aspects fantastic main mass of
NWA 4766:

Due to its shape, like a solifidication from a painting from Picasso, we
call it

like to inform you that NWA 998 is described as containing ankeritic
carbonates. One other meteorite has been described in this manner -
ALH84001

ALH84001 is not available to private collectors but NWA 998 is:

Hi Steve,
This question can only be properly answered by addressing
It at several levels:
In theory, one that PROVES life on Mars does or did exist.
Of those known to exist, ALH84001 would, of course, be the Holy
Grail of the known Martians.
Of those that are (at least theoretically) available, Chassigny is,
By far, the rarest, making it the Holy Grail of available Martians.
Hope that clears it up, Steve.
Best wishes, Michael

I see some Meteorites for sale, especially the
Willamette Meteorite, listed as Meteorite Shale.
What exactly is Meteorite Shale?

It is a term used for a highly weathered (terrestrialized) meteorite.
The use of “shale”, I suspect, came from the tendency of some
highly weathered meteorites, specifically highly oxidized iron
meteorites to develope a layered structure as they weather and
break into subparallel / parallel layers like shale when broken.

The terms “shale balls” and “iron shale” is also used for
some highly weathered meteorites.

I want to thank all of you,

Bernd, Jörn,Ken, Herman,MexicoDoug and Anne for the information provided.

So far what I believe is there are 62 hexahedrites and not all are (IIAB)

The other few hexahedrites other than (IIAB) are the hardest to find

I have not seen an example of a (IIG) yet.

I have not found many pictures of hexahedrites that show the unique pattern
of the Neumann lines, if someone can point me to a link or

e-mail me a picture I would appreciate it.

I want to assemble a page on my web site devoted to the hexahedrites for
reference, little is known about the hexahedrites.

I'm having a difficult time putting this together, I would like to use any
pictures you may have, I will tell where the picture came from of course.

I can't seem to get an exact count

It seems most of the known Hexahedrites are owned by governments and museums
not in many private collections. I'm also looking for pictures of any
Hexahedrites

Best Regards,
Tim Heitz

Here is the official list of Lunar meteorites. Not sure where the 120 #
came from, there are only 38 official known lunar meteorites. We know of a
couple more that are being worked on, but this is it.

Dear List Members,

A month or two ago I posted to the list that I felt that Steve Arnold -
IMB and Phil Mani should be nominated for a Harvey Award for their Huge
Brenham Main Mass discovery and also Geoff Notkin for his tireless work on
behalf of the Hurricane Katrina Fund Raiser among other too-numerous to
list meteorite-related activities.

I know that Geoff and Steve originally set up the Harvey Awards where they
could not nominate themselves for an award. I would like all list members
to join me here on the list to nominate these fine gentleman for a Harvey
Award an encourage them to make a new category where they could receive an
award if enough of us voted YES to this. Maybe they could create a
People's Choice award or something along these lines.

Everyone in favor, send the list a resounding YES and lets acknowledge
their contributions and achievements in public.

Consider this my YES vote...

Re: Re-2: [meteorite-list] Why is this so clean?

2006-01-19 Thread Tim Heitz

Hello Gary,

The only way you could get that type of quality was to pay the Russians
$20,000 and somewhere in the pile these were being found there.

I believe it. Some of the collections I've seen belonging to listers are
just awesome.
My own fledgling collection is more like a pocketful of pebbles by
comparison. I do have
prices on them, but they are WAY high. I guess I just don't want to sell
any just yet.

top quality. No exaggeration, no kidding but the plain truth!
